Jaymeet, Panchal frustrate Kerala as Gujarat eye lead

Patel will look to build on his unbeaten 74 to help Gujarat pocket the 28 runs they need for the decisive first-innings lead

Eight games into his maiden season, 22-year old Jaymeet Patel has already made massive contributions as a batting allrounder. Like his quarter-final century against Saurashtra or his twin half-centuries in a must-win against Himachal to qualify for the knockouts. On Friday, he’ll have a chance to put impactful performances like those to shade, if he can build on his unbeaten 74 to help Gujarat pocket the 28 runs they need for the decisive first-innings lead against Kerala. The first innings hasn’t yet been decided in the game, but the scorecard hardly reveals how fascinating this slow burn of a contest has been – purely for the contrasting approach of both sides.Kerala went slow and steady for two full days and posted 457; Gujarat responded with slightly more urgency, led by the experienced Priyank Panchal who made 148 to lay the foundation of their heist. But when things started to happen early on day four, batters went into their shell as the pressure mounted, before Jaymeet absorbed all of it to grind his way to what could be a career-defining half-century yet.Related

Jalaj Saxena: 'My emotions, heart, everything is with first-class cricket'

Panchal leads strong Gujarat reply with unbeaten century

Gujarat’s hopes of a lead had all but vanished at 357 for 7. Jaymeet and Siddharth Desai, the left-arm spin allrounder, have since put on 72 in 36.4 overs, batting through the final session, to keep Gujarat’s hopes of making their first final since 2016-17 alive. When stumps were drawn, Kerala’s spinners two frontline spinners – Jalaj Saxena and Aditya Sarwate – had bowled a combined 97 out of the 154 overs. Jalaj, who bowled unchanged right through the morning session, bowled 61 of those himself, to have figures of 4 for 137 – a spell that could yet prove to be the turning point if Kerala go on to nip out the three remaining wickets early to take the first-innings honours.Resuming on 222 for 1, Kerala struck early when Manan Hingrajia was lbw to Saxena’s straighter one from around the stumps. The ball of the day, however, was the one Saxena bowled to dismiss the set Panchal, the ball ripping in from the rough to dip and beat Panchal’s inside edge to crash into the stumps. Then he had Urvil Patel stumped after beating him in flight and skid. At this point, Kerala were gung ho, as Gujarat slipped to 292 for 4.Hemang Patel, the bowling allrounder who came in as a concussion sub for Ravi Bishnoi, earned a promotion up the order and walloped a quick-fire 28. The decision to replace Bishnoi was made after he experienced delayed concussion this morning, for a fielding effort on Day 3 where the ball bounced onto his forehead as he tried to stop the ball at point.Hemang’s impetus for quick runs briefly put Kerala on the back foot, but an attempt too play one shot too many had him miscue a hoick that was brilliantly taken at square third man by substitute Shoun Roger. When Chintan Gaja was lbw, a decision that was upheld through DRS, Gujarat were right on the edge. Until they were brought back to life by Jaymeet, who stands in the way of Kerala and a maiden Ranji final.

Australia-England 150th anniversary Test in 2027 will be a pink-ball day-night match

Part of the reasoning was that it will help maximise crowd attendance to the match in Australia and boost global TV ratings

Alex Malcolm11-Mar-2025Cricket Australia have announced that the one-off Test to be played between Australia and England at the MCG in March 2027 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of men’s Test cricket will be a pink-ball day-night match. Two years out from the match, which is scheduled for March 11-15 to mark the 150th anniversary of the first Test match ever played at the venue between Australia and England in 1877, it was announced that the match would be a day-night fixture. It will mirror the recent women’s Ashes Test that was a day-night pink-ball match at the MCG in late-January-early-February, but it will differ from the first-ever men’s Test in 1877 and the Centenary Test in 1977, which marked the 100-year anniversary, as both those matches were played with the red ball during the day with identical results as Australia won both by 45 runs. It will also be the first day-night men’s Test to be played at the MCG.Related

Australia-England Test to mark 150 years of Tests scheduled for March 11 in 2027

Part of the reasoning was that it would help maximise crowd attendance to the match in Australia as it will be played during the school and work year, as opposed to the Boxing Day Test which is always played in a holiday period. It will also help boost television ratings globally as an Australian day-night Test is far more friendly to UK viewers with the third session of play under lights can be viewed after 7.30am in the UK.New CA chief executive Todd Greenberg was grateful to the Victorian state government and the Melbourne Cricket Club for supporting the initiative to play it under lights.”The 150th Anniversary Test at the MCG will be one of the great cricket events and playing under lights will be a fantastic way to celebrate both our game’s rich heritage and Test cricket’s modern evolution,” he said. “It will also help ensure more people are able to attend and watch what will be a fantastic occasion.”The Centenary Test created many iconic performances including David Hookes’ five consecutive boundaries off Tony Greig, Rick McCosker batting with a broken jaw and Derek Randall’s defiant century, and I’m sure the 150th Test will create its own lifelong memories.”This season’s Ashes Series will whet the appetite for this clash in exactly two years, and we look forward to celebrating this historic occasion further as it draws nearer.”The match forms part of an incredibly busy calendar year for Australia men in 2027. They will play four Tests against New Zealand at home in December and January of 2026-27 before flying to India for a five-Test tour in January and February. They will return to play the one-off Test against England which will clash with the start of the IPL, that is due to begin March 14, 2027.The one-off Test will not be part of the World Test Championship but should Australia qualify for the 2027 final, as they have done for the 2023 and 2025 editions, they will then play a June WTC final before a five-match away Ashes – just as they did in 2023. The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled for October and November.

Detailed look at Newcastle's 10 most expensive signings… 10 Harvey Barnes £38m from Leicester City

Winger Harvey Barnes was a long-term target for the Magpies, who eventually signed him from Leicester City for £38m after the Foxes were relegated from the Premier League in 2023.

Barnes had a brilliant individual campaign but couldn’t keep the club in the top-flight, instead signing a five-year St James’ Park deal. The Englishman arrived at the club with plenty of Premier League experience during his time with Leicester and has gone on to star in black and white.

9 Bruno Guimaraes £40m from Lyon

What a signing. Sky Sports has Bruno Guimaraes’ fee at £40m in January 2022, and he was so good in his initial six month-spell that Newcastle could have sold him for double that last summer, with reports suggesting champions Manchester City could have been plotting a player-plus-cash deal to bring the midfielder to the Etihad Stadium.

Instead, they held onto the Brazilian, and that was certainly the right move. Bruno looks like one of the best midfielders in the Premier League right now and Newcastle will do well to find a better signing anytime soon.

8 Joelinton £40m from Hoffenheim

Joelinton arrived for a club-record fee from Hoffenheim as the answer to Newcastle’s goalscoring woes in the summer of 2019. The £40m they paid, per The Guardian, always looked strange as the Brazilian had only scored seven times the previous season, while the most he’d ever managed was eight.

Thus, many joked about Joelinton during his early days on Tyneside, and it appeared Newcastle had made the wrong transfer as he finished his first campaign with two goals. However, it turned out they were just using him in the wrong position. After switching to a midfield role, the player looked transformed and now that £40m fee looks like a very good deal.

7 Jacob Ramsey £43m from Aston Villa

Jacob Ramsey

6 Anthony Gordon £45m from Everton

Sky Sports say Newcastle paid £45m for Anthony Gordon, which sounded like a lot at the time. However, the winger has now justified that fee and is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

In fact, Gordon’s displays during his first full season with the Magpies resulted in him being linked with a move away from the club. Instead of leaving, though, the Englishman signed a fresh long-term Newcastle deal towards the end of 2024.

5 Yoane Wissa £55m from Brentford

On what was a dramatic deadline day in the summer of 2025, Yoane Wissa signed for Newcastle with 30 seconds to spare before the window slammed shut.

A long-term Newcastle target, Wissa pushed for a move to the Magpies from Brentford, costing £55m and taking the number 9 shirt at St James’ Park.

4 Anthony Elanga £55m from Nottingham Forest

Newcastle’s early summer signing in 2025 was Anthony Elanga, who cost £55m after an impressive few years at Nottingham Forest.

The pacey right-winger contributed to four goals in five games against the Magpies for Nottingham Forest, which may have caught PIF’s eye.

3 Sandro Tonali £55m from AC Milan

Sandro Tonali celebrates for Newcastle

Sandro Tonali arrived in a high-profile transfer from AC Milan in 2023, however, months after Newcastle splashed the cash, the Italy international was suspended for ten months following illegal betting charges.

The midfielder returned in 2024, and since then, Magpies supporters have seen why the club were willing to spend £55m on his signature, with Tonali a regular in the starting lineup.

2 Alexander Isak £60m from Real Soceidad

The arrival of Alexander Isak was a coup for Newcastle and a true statement that they wanted to sit at the top table. The Swedish striker was one of the top young strikers on the planet and few questioned the £60m fee in 2022, as reported by the BBC.

However, the summer of 2025 changed everything between Isak and Newcastle, with the forward going on strike, looking to sign for Liverpool. He got his wish, with the Magpies recieveing a British record £125m fee for Isak from Liverpool.

1 Nick Woltemade £69m from Stuttgart

Prior to Isak’s departure, Newcastle broke their transfer record by signing young German forward Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart.

After starring at the U21 European Championships, Woltemade was linked with the likes of Bayern Munich but instead moved to St James’ Park in a deal worth £69m.

Bumrah joins Mumbai Indians squad ahead of home game against RCB

In a major boost for the struggling Mumbai Indians (MI), Jasprit Bumrah has linked up with the squad ahead of their IPL 2025 game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at home on Monday. It is understood that Bumrah joined MI on Saturday, after getting clearance from the BCCI’s medical staff at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he had been doing his rehab since January following a stress-related discomfort in his lower back. He will now coordinate with the MI support staff, led by Mahela Jayawardene, to work out his comeback schedule.A critical part of the plan for Bumrah’s return originally included him playing a practice match or two to test his fitness. It could not be confirmed whether he managed to do it at the Centre of Excellence or will do it with MI.

The last update about Bumrah was on April 4, when it was reported that he would miss the game against RCB at the very least before returning to action.Bumrah had been building his bowling workload in recent weeks at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and, as of April 4, was understood to be close to taking the final round of fitness tests.Bumrah has been cautious about his recovery, and wants to ensure he is totally fit before returning to action. This is keeping in mind India’s five-Test series in England, starting on June 28.MI have so far played four games in IPL 2025, winning one and losing three, and have handed debuts to Satyanarayana Raju, Vignesh Puthur and Ashwani Kumar in Bumrah’s absence, with Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar leading the attack and captain Hardik Pandya the other seam-bowling option in the line-up.Bumrah has played all his IPL cricket for MI, starting in 2013 and picking up 165 wickets in 133 matches over the years. The only IPL season he missed since he started playing was in 2023, when he had a back injury. He suffered the latest injury during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on January 4. Bumrah was subsequently ruled out of the Champions Trophy, which India won last month. This is the first time Bumrah has gone down with a back injury since his surgery in March 2023.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi takes charge as ACC president

Naqvi who has been PCB chair since February 2024 said that he was “deeply honoured” by the appointment

Danyal Rasool03-Apr-2025Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi is now president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), having formally assumed charge from Sri Lanka’s Shammi Silva. Naqvi, who was elected PCB chairman in February 2024, said he was “deeply honoured” by the appointment.”Asia remains the heartbeat of world cricket, and I am committed to working with all member boards to accelerate the game’s growth and global influence,” Naqvi said in a statement. “Together, we will unlock new opportunities, foster greater collaboration, and take Asian cricket to unprecedented heights. I also extend my sincere thanks to the outgoing ACC President for his leadership and contributions to the ACC during his tenure.”Silva assumed charge only three months ago in December 2024, taking over the role when Jay Shah quit the presidency to take up his position as ICC chair. “It has been a privilege to serve as President of the Asian Cricket Council,” Silva said. “The steadfast commitment of our member boards working together has been pivotal in elevating ACC’s stature across the region.” Silva further thanked Shah and expressed confidence in Naqvi’s “capable leadership”.Related

For Naqvi, it adds another position to an already crowded list of responsibilities. Aside from being PCB chairman, he also serves as Pakistan’s interior minister. He was at the helm when Pakistan took a more forceful position in an attempt to assert the PCB’s right to host the entirety of the 2025 Champions Trophy, awarded to Pakistan, within the country.Ultimately, when the BCCI did not send its team to Pakistan, the PCB and the BCCI worked out a deal which would see all matches involving India in an event hosted in Pakistan being played at a neutral venue, and in return, all matches involving Pakistan in an event hosted by India played at a neutral venue. The most pressing issue for Naqvi in his capacity as ACC president will involve the venue of the T20 Asia Cup later this year. India are the official hosts, but the PCB is expected to demand another venue for Pakistan’s matches. There is precedent for that at the ACC level. When, under Shah’s presidency, Pakistan hosted the tournament in 2023, Sri Lanka was added as the secondary venue for the latter part of the tournament owing to India’s refusal to visit Pakistan.

Man Utd’s most embarrassing defeats since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford

Manchester United have suffered one of their most humiliating losses in the club’s history after being knocked out of the League Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town.

Ruben Amorim’s team were playing in the second round of the competition for the first time in 11 years but just about took the Mariners to penalties after recovering from 2-0 down in the first half.

However, £65m summer signing Bryan Mbeumo missed from the spot and goalkeeper Andre Onana struggled in goal as Grimsby ran out 12-11 winners on penalties.

Following Sir Alex Ferguson’s Old Trafford departure in 2013, the defeat to Grimsby has to be the most embarrassing for Man Utd. But this isn’t a one off, with the Red Devils suffering some heavy and humiliating losses since 2013 under numerous managers.

Man Utd’s most embarrassing defeats since Sir Alex Ferguson left 11 Man City 4-1 Man Utd 2013/14

David Moyes was the man to replace Ferguson, and in October 2013, led his Man Utd side in the first Manchester derby at the Etihad.

However, the Red Devils, who were the defending champions, found themselves 4-0 down in 50 minutes and began the shift in power in Manchester.

10 MK Dons 4-0 Manchester United 2014/15

MK Dons hadn’t been founded the last time United played in the second round of the League Cup in 2014, but the League One side hammered Louis van Gaal’s side 4-0.

Two goals from Will Grigg put the third-tier side on their way, before Arsenal loanee Benik Afobe rounded things off late on with a brace of his own.

9 Everton 4-0 Manchester United 2018/19

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United were looking to finish in the top four when they travelled to Goodison Park to take on Everton in April in 2019.

However, the Red Devils failed to turn up, registering just one shot on target as they were outclassed by the Toffees, who went 4-0 up just after the hour mark. United would fail to qualify for the Champions League that season.

8 Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham 2020/21

Luckily for Man Utd and Solskjaer, the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham in October 2020 was played behind closed doors.

It was Jose Mourinho who came back to haunt the Red Devils, who conceded six at Old Trafford for just the second time in the Premier League. Spurs were 4-1 up at half time after Bruno Fernandes put United in front, and Tottenham coasted to victory as Mourinho got his revenge on United.

7 Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool 2021/22

A year on from a heavy defeat to Tottenham, Old Trafford was packed as Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool humiliated Solskjaer and Man Utd.

Mohamed Salah was the star of the show with a hat-trick for the visitors, with Naby Keita and Diogo Jota also getting on the scoresheet. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, though, things would only get worse against Liverpool.

6 Watford 4-1 Manchester United 2021/22

A heavy defeat at Vicarage Road against relegation-threatened Watford proved to be the final straw for Solskjaer as Man Utd manager in November 2021.

The Hornets, who would pick jump just 23 points all season and finish 19th, ran out comfortable winners, with captain Harry Maguire being shown a red card to cap things off for the Red Devils. Solskjaer left the club the following day.

5 Brighton 4-0 Manchester United 2021/22

Ralf Rangnick took interim charge of Man Utd following Solskjaer’s Old Trafford departure, but he had seen enough by the time his side were hammered by Brighton in May 2022.

Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard were the goalscorers for the Seagulls on the day to end United’s slim chances of Champions League qualification.

4 Brentford 4-0 Manchester United 2022/23

With Erik ten Hag the new man in charge at Old Trafford, there was plenty of positivity in the summer of 2022.

However, that quickly evaporated as Brentford stunned the Red Devils by scoring four goals in the first half, even with Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting line-up.

It was also United’s seventh loss in a row away from home, their worst run since 1936, although that wasn’t Ten Hag’s fault.

3 Sevilla 3-0 Manchester United 2022/23

Heading into the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals level at 2-2, United failed to show up in Spain as Sevilla ran riot with a 3-0 win after two goals from Youssef En-Nesyri and one from defender Loic Bade.

Errors at the back from Maguire and David de Gea, with nothing going forward, Ten Hag’s side exited Europe with a whimper.

2 Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United 2022/23

Man Utd’s worst ever result in the Premier League came at Anfield in March 2023, with Liverpool recording the biggest win in the history of the fixture between the two rivals.

Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock just before half time and Klopp’s side ran riot in the second half, scoring six times with braces from Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Salah and one from Roberto Firmino.

It was the first time in over 90 years that Man Utd had conceded seven goals in a single match, with Ten Hag the manager in charge.

Crystal Palace make approach for multiple Premier League winner with Man City

Crystal Palace are making progress in the transfer market and have now put forward an approach to a two-time Premier League winner in the final days of the window, according to reports.

Crystal Palace look to retain Marc Guehi amid potential incomings

Marc Guehi is the man in focus at Selhurst Park after Eberechi Eze’s exit, and it remains to be seen if the England international will stay or join his compatriot by completing a move away before the window closes.

With his contract expiring next year, Liverpool are in the frame to land Guehi and Manchester City are also reportedly eyeing a late swoop to tempt the former Chelsea man north amid a backdrop of uncertainty surrounding his future.

Marc Guehi for Crystal Palace

Nevertheless, there is some positive news for Crystal Palace fans to sink their teeth into, courtesy of Fabrizio Romano, who confirmed on X that the Eagles are closing in on Villarreal star Yeremy Pino for a club record fee.

He stated on X: “Crystal Palace are in advanced talks to sign Yeremy Pino from Villarreal, exclusive story from last week confirmed. Negotiations underway between clubs to get the deal done asap, #CPFC pushing. Fee could be close to €50m.”

Leicester City playmaker Bilal El Khannouss has been a long-term Eagles target, but it remains to be seen if Oliver Glasner decides to bite before the close of play in the market, where more players will begin to become available over the coming days.

Crystal Palace want to complete £40m double deal to replace Eberechi Eze

Either way, there is an inevitability that supporters will see incomings at Selhurst Park, and recent developments indicate that Crystal Palace have got the ball rolling over a late swoop for a defender who has led a distinguished career path.

Crystal Palace make approach for Manchester City's Manuel Akanji

Per Sky Sports News on X, Crystal Palace have made an approach to land Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji, who they believe could be an ideal replacement if Guehi were to move on this summer.

Defensive reinforcements will be paramount should that sequence of events occur, and the Switzerland international could be available for a cut-price fee due to his contract at the Etihad Stadium being set to expire in 2027.

Labelled “perfect” by Pep Guardiola, Akanji made 40 appearances last campaign for the Citizens, registering two assists, though he is yet to feature under the Catalan boss this term and has fallen down the pecking order.

The 30-year-old may now be set for a new challenge after three years in Manchester and Crystal Palace could be the ideal environment for regular minutes in the prime of his career, especially if Guehi is to depart by next Monday.

'You are one of them!' – Liverpool fans take Florian Wirtz on board as former player compares struggling £116m man to Darwin Nunez

Florian Wirtz's situation at Liverpool has been likened to that of Darwin Nunez, with Peter Crouch confident that Reds supporters will take the German playmaker to their hearts. Wirtz has endured a tough start to his spell in English football, on the back of a £116 million ($156m) transfer, but he will boast the full support of those in the stands if he continues to give his all to the collective cause.

Big-money signing waiting on first goal involvement

There has been no doubting Wirtz’s effort since completing a big-money switch from Bayer Leverkusen, with the 22-year-old eager to impress, he has just been lacking in end product. The talented Germany international is still waiting on his first goal involvement as a Liverpool player after nine appearances in all competitions.

He was briefly the most expensive player in British football when joining the reigning Premier League champions, before that place in the history books was filled by £125m ($168m) Anfield team-mate Alexander Isak. Such a hefty price tag was always going to bring added scrutiny and expectation.

Wirtz showed what he is capable of when registering 16 goals and 15 assists for Leverkusen from an attacking midfield berth last season. Arne Slot needs to find a way of unlocking that potential on Merseyside. Once he does so, then Wirtz should go on to become a fan favourite.

Ex-Reds striker Crouch believes that a loyal fan base will give Wirtz time in which to find his feet, with 100 per cent effort all that they are demanding for now. They have overlooked supposed flaws in other enigmatic performers, with Uruguayan forward Nunez becoming something of a cult hero despite never being prolific in front of goal.

Paddy Power’s Crouch, who was speaking at the launch of Paddy’s Sportsbook at The Hippodrome Casino, said: "I think Wirtz is in the best possible environment, I know it from when I was there. At Liverpool, if you attack one of their players, the fans bring you on the inside and you are one of them. Nunez also had a difficult time, but not once did Liverpool fans waiver in their support of him."

Did Liverpool get lucky during unbeaten start?

Liverpool have been searching for a spark as a star-studded squad this season. They find themselves back at the top of the Premier League table, but have been relying on late goals to get them there. A faultless start to the campaign papered over any cracks, with battling victories being secured in domestic and European competition.

Slot’s side have, however, come unstuck in their last two fixtures. Crystal Palace secured a dramatic 2-1 win over the Reds in Premier League action at Selhurst Park, before a penalty from Nigeria international Victor Osimhen condemned them to a 1-0 reversal away at Galatasaray in the Champions League. Questions have been asked of some big selection calls in those contests.

There is no cause for panic, with a minor bump in the road being hit, and Crouch is confident that a team of proven winners will come good again once any early-season issues have been ironed out. He added: "I don't think Liverpool have been lucky. Have they been dominant in every game? Absolutely not. They've looked open and fragile at times but they've scored goals and found a way to win. I think they proved last season how good they can be, they're a top side."

  • Liverpool fixtures: Next up for the Reds

Liverpool will be determined to bounce back in style when returning to competitive action, but are heading into a testing run of fixtures. They have one more game to take in before reaching the next international break, with that contest playing out at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as Slot takes his troops to Chelsea.

The Reds will then entertain old adversaries Manchester United – who have plenty of their own issues to address – on October 19 before heading out on the road again for a Champions League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany.
