A heavy defeat at Vicarage Road against relegation-threatened Watford proved to be the final straw for Solskjaer as Man Utd manager in November 2021.

The Hornets, who would pick jump just 23 points all season and finish 19th, ran out comfortable winners, with captain Harry Maguire being shown a red card to cap things off for the Red Devils. Solskjaer left the club the following day.

5 Brighton 4-0 Manchester United 2021/22

Ralf Rangnick took interim charge of Man Utd following Solskjaer’s Old Trafford departure, but he had seen enough by the time his side were hammered by Brighton in May 2022.

Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard were the goalscorers for the Seagulls on the day to end United’s slim chances of Champions League qualification.

With Erik ten Hag the new man in charge at Old Trafford, there was plenty of positivity in the summer of 2022.

Per Sky Sports News on X, Crystal Palace have made an approach to land Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji, who they believe could be an ideal replacement if Guehi were to move on this summer.

Defensive reinforcements will be paramount should that sequence of events occur, and the Switzerland international could be available for a cut-price fee due to his contract at the Etihad Stadium being set to expire in 2027.

Labelled “perfect” by Pep Guardiola, Akanji made 40 appearances last campaign for the Citizens, registering two assists, though he is yet to feature under the Catalan boss this term and has fallen down the pecking order.

The 30-year-old may now be set for a new challenge after three years in Manchester and Crystal Palace could be the ideal environment for regular minutes in the prime of his career, especially if Guehi is to depart by next Monday.

Florian Wirtz's situation at Liverpool has been likened to that of Darwin Nunez, with Peter Crouch confident that Reds supporters will take the German playmaker to their hearts.   There has been no doubting Wirtz’s effort since completing a big-money switch from Bayer Leverkusen, with the 22-year-old eager to impress, he has just been lacking in end product. The talented Germany international is still waiting on his first goal involvement as a Liverpool player after nine appearances in all competitions.

  He was briefly the most expensive player in British football when joining the reigning Premier League champions, before that place in the history books was filled by £125m ($168m) Anfield team-mate Alexander Isak. Such a hefty price tag was always going to bring added scrutiny and expectation.

• Wirtz's situation likened to that of Nunez

  Wirtz showed what he is capable of when registering 16 goals and 15 assists for Leverkusen from an attacking midfield berth last season. Arne Slot needs to find a way of unlocking that potential on Merseyside. Once he does so, then Wirtz should go on to become a fan favourite.

  Ex-Reds striker Crouch believes that a loyal fan base will give Wirtz time in which to find his feet, with 100 per cent effort all that they are demanding for now. They have overlooked supposed flaws in other enigmatic performers, with Uruguayan forward Nunez becoming something of a cult hero despite never being prolific in front of goal.

  Paddy Power’s Crouch, who was speaking at the launch of Paddy’s Sportsbook at The Hippodrome Casino, said: "I think Wirtz is in the best possible environment, I know it from when I was there. At Liverpool, if you attack one of their players, the fans bring you on the inside and you are one of them.   Did Liverpool get lucky during unbeaten start?

  Liverpool have been searching for a spark as a star-studded squad this season.
