Imagine him & Mitchell: Crystal Palace must now unleash "exceptional" ace

Heading into game week 25 of the Premier League campaign, Crystal Palace currently sit 12th in the table, just four points off of a top-half spot.

They have managed to drag themselves away from a relegation battle, now sitting 13 points ahead of 18th-place Leicester City.

The Eagles are averaging some of the worst attacking numbers in the league. But, on the flip side, their defensive shape and quality are their biggest asset right now under Oliver Glasner, conceding 30 goals in 24 games and averaging 13.1 shots against them per game (ranking 10th in the league for this metric).

Crystal Palace face Everton at Selhurst Park in their next Premier League fixture, who currently sit 15th in the league, but are coming off of a very strong string of results, beating Tottenham, Brighton and Leicester in the league and drawing 2-2 with Liverpool.

Crystal Palace team news

Glasner will remain without Joel Ward (calf injury), Chadi Riad (knee injury) and Cheick Doucoure (knee injury) heading into the Everton game this weekend. Doucoure will now need to undergo surgery on his knee, which means he will miss the entirety of this season.

The likes of Eberechi Eze, Eddie Nketiah and Ismaila Sarr are all being assessed ahead of the Toffees game, with the first two currently having knocks/slight injuries and the latter having missed the last match due to illness.

Luckily for the Eagles, Adam Wharton has made his return to action in recent weeks, just in time to take over in midfield from Doucoure, which will give Palace a strong boost.

But after making some new signings in January, and the few injuries they have picked up, Glasner could look to change things up against Everton, adding a new dynamic to his side.

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Crystal Palace's new dynamic against Everton

Crystal Palace could look to line up with both new signing Ben Chilwell and academy graduate, Tyrick Mitchell for the first time against Everton, finding a strong balance of attacking output and defensive stability on that left-hand side.

When you look at Chilwell’s underlying numbers from his last season under Thomas Tuchel in a back three system which allowed him to play as a wing-back, you can see the value he provides from that position, getting forward, getting shots off, attacking the box and being a threat on goal. In that sense, he could well be a better option for Glasner.

However, that doesn’t mean that Mitchell should miss out. Instead, it means the current incumbent of the left-back role could operate in a slightly unfamiliar left centre-back role in a back five/back three.

This would allow him to still defend in similar left-sided wide areas and add some protection behind the likes of Chilwell and Eze on that side, if/when their talisman is available.

Ex-Chelsea boss, Mauricio Pochettino praised Chilwell as “one of the best” left-backs in the world at his best, while Brendan Rodgers labelled him as “exceptional”, and if Glasner can get that level out of him, it would play a huge part in Palace’s bid for a second top-half finish in a row.

Drew's career-best hundred makes leaders WA toil

The opener finished unbeaten on 160 while Marcus Stoinis made a return to first-class cricket

AAP10-Feb-2023A career-best innings from Daniel Drew lifted Sheffield Shield outsiders South Australia to a strong position against runaway leaders Western Australia after the opening day at Adelaide Oval.Drew remained unbeaten on 160, having posted a second first-class century in eight outings and eclipsing his previous best of 130 in the process.Entering the fray in the 10th over following Jake Carder’s dismissal for 6, Drew looked comfortable throughout, finding the boundary on 18 occasions during a 272-ball knock. In concert with opener Henry Hunt, Drew featured in the best partnership of the day, leaving the Redbacks sitting pretty at 1 for 171 during the middle session.WA medium-fast bowler Charlie Stobo led the way on a tough day in the field for the visitors, returning 2 for 40 from 20 overs.Jake Lehmann contributed a typically breezy 26 before being caught down the leg side, while Thomas Kelly added 39 before he was dismissed late in the day.Western Australia went into the match with two high-profile inclusions in the form of Marcus Stoinis – playing his first red-ball state match for nearly three years – as well as veteran batter Shaun Marsh for the first time this season.South Australia, in contrast, were without their Test stars Travis Head and Alex Carey, while paceman David Grant (stress fracture) and long-term opener Jake Weatherald (personal) were also absent.Holders WA boast four wins from six starts while SA only broke through for their first victory of the season in the final match prior to the mid-summer break.

Worth even more than Piroe: Leeds must regret selling "sensational" star

With just 11 games to go in the Championship campaign this season, Leeds United currently sit three points clear of Sheffield United in their hunt to secure promotion – but doing so whilst winning the title.

The Whites’ form has been superb for large parts of the campaign, losing just three games to date, whilst also remaining unbeaten since the beginning of December.

Daniel Farke deserves a huge amount of credit for keeping the side competitive after numerous key departures over the summer after the play-off final defeat at Wembley.

The German will be looking to make it three second-tier title wins in England in the coming months, adding to the two he claimed during his time in charge of Norwich City.

However, if he is to achieve such a feat, he will likely rely on one player who’s so often produced the goods in the final third over the last couple of months.

Joel Piroe’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25

The striker role at Elland Road has been one that has brought about conversation over recent years, with numerous players struggling to fill the void in Yorkshire.

However, over the last few months, Dutchman Joel Piroe has nailed down the starting role in Farke’s side, repaying the boss for the faith shown in him to lead the line.

The 25-year-old has already netted 16 times in his 35 appearances, already scoring outscoring his tally from his debut campaign at the club following his £10m move in 2023.

However, Piroe hasn’t had his success without his doubters, often coming under fire for his displays, but it’s safe to say the supporters are reaping the rewards with his recent form in the final third.

Despite his impressive run for the Whites in recent times, he’s still valued lower than one player who the club may regret offloading after his form away from the club.

The former Leeds star who’s worth more than Piroe

Before their recent success over the last couple of years, Leeds found themselves in a tricky financial situation, which saw them offloading numerous first-team players to balance the books.

Lewis Cook was just one example who departed his boyhood side for just £6m, now starring for Bournemouth in the Premier League and potentially featuring in Europe amid the Cherries’ recent form.

Former Leeds midfielder Lewis Cook

However, another player who previously plied their trade in Yorkshire but is now playing in the top flight is winger Jack Clarke, who made his breakthrough for the Whites back in the 2018/19 season.

The now 24-year-old departed in an £8.5m deal to join Tottenham Hotspur after his breakthrough campaign but failed to make a single Premier League appearance during his time in North London.

He’s since recaptured his form at Sunderland, registering 28 goals and 21 assists for the Black Cats, leading to Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley dubbing him “sensational” for his time at the Stadium of Light.

He’s since moved to Ipswich Town, once again joining a Premier League outfit, but has struggled to carry his excellent form to Portman Road, registering three goals and five assists to date – but has still seen an increase in his market value.

Clarke is now valued at £12.4m by Transfermarkt, a figure that is higher than that of Piroe, who’s only valued at £11.5m despite his excellent goalscoring record this campaign.

Given the increase and recent form in England’s second tier, Leeds must regret parting ways with Clarke, potentially having another dimension in attack had they kept hold of the youngster.

Undoubtedly, he left at a time when financial problems were present in Yorkshire, but his ability in the final third could’ve provided the added cutting edge in their quest for promotion in the coming months.

Romario Shepherd fireworks, Alzarri Joseph five-for seal series for West Indies

Romario Shepherd’s unbeaten 44 off 22 balls, and his ninth-wicket partnership of 59 off 26 balls with Alzarri Joseph, who went on to take his first T20I five-for, secured a series win for West Indies to end an entertaining series.Shepherd and Joseph gave West Indies the third-highest score at the Wanderers and the highest total without an individual fifty since Australia’s 221 for 5 against England in 2007. They were able to defend it in challenging conditions, with plenty of dew greasing up the ball, and against a determined South African line-up.Reeza Hendricks notched up a career-best 83 and put on 80 with Rilee Rossouw for the second wicket but the required run-rate ballooned on South Africa and their batting line-up appeared a little light. The result means West Indies have now won a second successive T20I series win in South Africa, eight years after taking the trophy in 2015. Sheldon Cottrell and Jason Holder are the only members of the current squad who played in that series.Ngidi’s nightmare start After last playing a T20I when South Africa lost to Netherlands at the World Cup in November, Ngidi may have thought things could only get better but they didn’t for him. He bowled a decent delivery first up but then erred down the leg-side to the powerful Brandon King who helped the ball on its way over long leg. Ngidi adjusted to outside off stump with his next ball but King launched it onto the roof over deep mid-wicket and forced Ngidi to think of something else. He tried pace off with this fourth ball but King spotted it and sent it over mid-wicket for four. In frustration, Ngidi overstepped for his next ball and had to bowl it again. His extra delivery was a low full-toss that Kyle Mayers hit over extra cover for four to complete a 22-run over. But the rest of the bowlers do the early work Kagiso Rabada was given the ball immediately after Ngidi and made amends. He bowled Mayers with a full, fast delivery that knocked the West Indian opener off his feet as it found the stumps and then brought the centurion from SuperSport Park, Johnson Charles, down to earth with a first-ball duck. Charles didn’t move his feet to a ball that nipped back into him and inside-edged onto his stumps as South Africa roared back. Anrich Nortje returned in the ninth over and saw Mayers walk across his stumps so pitched it on leg stump and took it out. Aiden Markram joined in the fun when Rovman Powell opened his stance and missed a slog and he became the fourth West Indian to be bowled. West Indies were 108 for 4 at the halfway stage, after which Ngidi redeemed himself when he had Nicholas Pooran caught behind. Shepherding the tailWest Indies needed a strong finish after they lost 3 for 21 between the 13th and 16th over with not much batting to come. Shepherd and Joseph put on the highest ninth-wicket partnership at the Wanderers, and took 52 runs off the last three overs to ensure West Indies topped 200. Shepherd survived two chances in that time – he edged Wayne Parnell but Quinton de Kock could not hold on and then he skied a chance off Rabada but Heinrich Klaasen lost it in the lights at fine leg. Shepherd finished the innings with a massive six over long on, a pull through mid-wicket for four and an aerial drive over Rabada’s head in an over that cost 26 runs. Shepherd finished unbeaten on 44 off 22 balls. All square in the Powerplay South Africa started in fairly circumspect style, with only seven runs off the first two overs of their reply, before Quinton de Kock picked up the pace. He steered Cottrell past third man to open his boundary count and then took three fours off Roston Chase’s second over to signal South Africa’s intent. De Kock was profiting off the slower bowling but misread when Joseph put the brakes on and cut to Chase at third. As he left the field, de Kock told Rossouw the ball was sticking in the pitch a bit but that seemed to mean nothing to the No.3. He hit the first ball he faced over extra cover for four, and then sent Joseph over point for six and through the covers for another four. Rossouw scored 19 runs off the first six balls he faced and South Africa finished the Powerplay on exactly the same score as West Indies: 61, but had lost one fewer wicket.Six of the best Unlike de Kock or Rossouw, Hendricks finds his runs with finesse over fury, and he has found a lot of them that way. He brought up his sixth T20I half century in his last eight innings with a six. Hendricks pulled a Shepherd slower ball over deep mid-wicket, showing off his strong use of the wrists and the power he finds through placement, and then decided it was time to show off his big-hitting. He threw his bat at the next ball and sent it swirling to deep extra cover, where it slipped through Brandon King’s hands. South Africa needed 92 off 46 balls at that stage. Hendricks’ lifeline emboldened him and he went aerial in the next over too, but the ball fell short of mid-wicket and Hendricks survived again. He went on to a career best 83 and was at the crease until the penultimate over. South Africa needed 35 runs off 12 balls and Hendricks tried to muscle them there by going over long-on but hit Joseph to Powell on the fence.Joseph gets another five-forHe removed de Kock in his first over, and Miller in his third but Joseph’s biggest task came in his final six balls, with South Africa’s big-hitters at the ready to get big runs. Hendricks was out off his first ball and then Klaasen walked across his stumps and hit him for six. Joseph could have been overawed but he wasn’t. He pulled back the pace and presented Klaasen with a full slower ball that he sliced skyward. Cottrell took a good running catch to send South Africa’s last recognised batter back. Then Joseph got the gas back and sent a full, fast ball to Wayne Parnell, who swung and missed, to record his first T20I five-for.

Tottenham approve exit for "excellent" attacker as Levy awaits bidding war

Tottenham Hotspur have decided to sanction an exit this summer, with chairman Daniel Levy and co anticipating a bidding war for the player’s services.

Tottenham are also open to selling Richarlison this summer, following a season ravaged by injury, with the Brazilian failing to make his mark under Postecoglou as a result. Everton are also rumoured to be weighing up a swoop for their former striker this summer, and Levy is prepared to sell Richarlison for around £40 million (GiveMeSport).

Even Spurs captain Son Heung-min has been linked with an exit at the end of this season, despite the club recently electing to extend the winger’s deal by an additional 12 months, so Postecoglou’s side could look very different by the start of 2025/2026.

Amid his excellent loan spell at Leeds United, questions will be asked about the future of winger Manor Solomon.

The Israeli international joined Tottenham on a free transfer in 2023, but his debut campaign at N17 was overshadowed by long-term injuries. Levy gave the green-light for Solomon to join Leeds on a temporary deal, and he hasn’t looked back since.

The 25-year-old has scored seven goals and assisted eight more in 30 total appearances under Daniel Farke, prompting reports that they could look to extend his stay at Elland Road.

Tottenham set to green-light Manor Solomon transfer as bidding war looms

As per GiveMeSport, Leeds won’t be the only contenders for his services. Indeed, it is claimed Everton and Southampton are also expressing an interest in the winger, with Levy anticipating a bidding war for Solomon’s signature at Tottenham. His price tag is currently set at £15 million, but Spurs are confident they could demand even more, especially considering the growing clamour for Solomon’s services this summer.

Tottenham are prepared to sanction the ex-Fulham star’s exit as a result, with the north Londoners set to make a pure profit off his potential sale as well.

“I know Manor Solomon from the Premier League. From Fulham, Tottenham, and now he has moved to Leeds,” said Man City superstar Kevin De Bruyne. “He has the qualities to play at this level. He is an excellent player.”

Meanwhile, ex-Leeds boss Neil Redfearn is convinced he’s far beyond English second tier level: “He’s got a quality that is better than this level, you can obviously see that.”

As good as Salah: 8/10 Liverpool star may have just won Slot the title

Liverpool took a huge step towards claiming the Premier League title this afternoon, beating defending champions Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai secured all three points for Arne Slot’s side, claiming their first victory against the Citizens on their home turf in a decade.

The victory moves the Reds 11 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, with just 11 games remaining, looking in a superb place to secure a first title in five years.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on the touchline against Lille

It would be a phenomenal achievement by the Dutchman after taking the reins in the summer, providing the perfect transition after Jürgen Klopp stepped away from the role.

Numerous players impressed in Manchester during the victory, playing a pivotal role in moving the side one step closer to bringing the title back to Anfield.

Liverpool’s star performers against Man City

Egyptian winger Salah provided the goods for Liverpool once again this afternoon, getting himself on the scoresheet for the 25th time in just 27 matches.

The 32-year-old also registered an assist for their second goal, making it the 11th game in the league throughout 2024/25 in which he had achieved such a feat.

In a game where Slot’s men only had 34% of the ball, it was pivotal that the backline resisted the pressure from the hosts, something which played perfectly into the hands of Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman made nine clearances, eight of which were with his head, winning 75% of the ground duels he entered – maintaining a clean sheet for the 11th time this campaign.

However, despite the performances of the aforementioned duo, one other first-team star produced a magnificent display in the North West, massively boosting their title credentials.

Performance in Numbers

The Liverpool player who may have just won them the title

For the clash against Pep Guardiola’s side, Slot produced a tactical masterclass that saw the Reds switch to a 4-2-4 system, operating without a recognised striker despite having Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo on the bench.

It allowed for two false nines to drop into a deeper role along with the two central midfielders, creating a four-man box system in the middle – subsequently outnumbering the hosts in the centre of the park.

Curtis Jones was one of the players who operated in the aforementioned role, along with Szoboszlai – with the latter producing a performance to remember at the Etihad.

Despite the slightly unfamiliar role, the Hungarian international starred throughout, registering a goal and an assist during the victory, linking up excellently with Salah in the final third.

However, his underlying stats were just as impressive, with his numbers undoubtedly edging the side ever closer to ending their five-season wait for a Premier League title.

The 24-year-old, whose display was dubbed “sensational” by journalist Lewis Steele, registered 37 touches during the victory, four of which came in the opposition box, including his strike to double the lead.

However, despite his impressive attacking display, he also produced some phenomenal defensive numbers, winning 100% of the tackles he entered, making three recoveries and excelling in the false nine role.

As a result of his showing, Szoboszlai was handed an 8/10 match rating by The Express’ Archie Griggs, further highlighting his impressive showing against the defending champions.

It was a phenomenal showing from the Reds, one that could well prove to be the clincher in their title ambitions come the end of the season.

Salah and Szoboszlai were undoubtedly the two stars at the Etihad, inflicting yet more pain on Guardiola, whilst further showcasing what a superb side Slot has built in a short period of time.

Tottenham’s current Premier League position does little to reflect the level of success they’ve had in Europe this season. Sitting 17th in the table with just one game remaining, this is Spurs’ worst domestic campaign since their relegation in 1977. Reports have suggested that even a Europa League triumph might not guarantee his stay at the club, but the manager himself appears unbothered by the speculation.

"My future is assured mate, don't… I wouldn't be the first person who changes jobs mate, we all change jobs, I'm sure you've had more than one job," Postecoglou continued. "My future's assured. I've got a beautiful family, I've got a great life, I'll keep on winning trophies until I finish, wherever that is. So, don't worry about my future mate. My future is not tied with anything, my future is assured. Provided, God willing, my health remains, my beautiful family is beside me, my friends, there's nothing wrong with my future mate."

BCB says TV umpire was correct following controversial ADRS decision

With the regular DRS unavailable, a pared-down system has been in use, triggering multiple flare-ups

Mohammad Isam15-Jan-2023The BCB has backed TV umpire Tanvir Ahmed after he was involved in a contentious lbw call during the BPL game between Comilla Victorians and Fortune Barishal on Saturday. After umpire Morshed Ali Khan had given Jaker Ali out lbw in the 14th over of the Comilla innings, the batter reviewed, only for Tanvir to uphold the on-field decision despite replays seeming to suggest the ball had pitched outside leg stump. The BCB has explained that part of the ball did pitch within the “pitching zone” that is in line with the stumps.BPL match officials use a technology called the Alternate Decision Review System (ADRS) instead of the standard DRS. On the eve of the tournament, BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said the board had not been able to secure the personnel from Hawkeye to run the DRS, even though the BCB has the technology available at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. To make decisions via the ADRS, the TV umpires have to go by a blue line for a pitching zone to depict the line of the stumps to make lbw decisions. They have also used zoomed-in camera angles to judge edges or whether the ball has hit bat or bad first. For picking up noise, they use stump mic audio provided by the broadcasters. It is far from a foolproof system, considered inferior to the DRS, and many players and coaches have already questioned its use during the BPL.The decision on Saturday left Jaker looking shocked while the TV commentator said at the time that he was “lost for words”. Comilla coach Mohammad Salahuddin expressed his frustration with the call during the post-match press conference, after which the BCB released its statement.”The point of pitching [pitching zone] of the ball is indicated with the help of a stump to stump pitch mat in the Alternative Decision Review System [ADRS] being used in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League T20. In Appendix D1 of the tournament’s Match Playing Conditions, it is stated that a ball will be considered to have pitched ‘In-Line’ in the ADRS if ‘Any part of the ball was inside the Pitching Zone’.”In accordance with this interpretation of the related rule, the TV umpire upheld the LBW [image showing the point of pitching of the ball attached] decision by the on-field umpire against Comilla Victorians batsman Jaker Ali in Comilla’s match with Fortune Barishal at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdury Stadium in Chattogram today.”With regular DRS unavailable, third umpires have used the Alternative Decision Review System [ADRS] during BPL 2023•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Salahuddin said the tournament may be better off without the ADRS, *which earned him a fine of 50% of his match fees and three demerit points.”I think it is better not to have ADRS,” he said. “It is better to give what the [on-field] umpire gives. The ball pitched totally outside the leg stump… I think a couple of [questionable] decisions… one decision was bad in the first match, and today too.”Salahuddin said he didn’t want to make a stronger comment as he could be punished by the BCB. “I don’t know… their rules might include something new,” he said. “Perhaps there was a shadow [of the ball in line with the stumps]. I would have been happy if the [on-field] umpire had given the [final] decision.”At the moment I can’t really say anything. There is a lot of debate about it. I said at the beginning that one or two decisions will decide the game. What we see with the naked eye is not out, but the third umpire gives it out. Then we have nothing to do.”Do you want us to shout on the field? That will only lead to suspension. There is no use in protesting. There is no point in writing or protesting. Our hands and feet are tied, there is really nothing to do.”There have been couple of flashpoints during this season’s BPL with the use of the ADRS. First, Soumya Sarkar argued with the umpires after both the on-field and TV umpire on January 7. A second review by the umpires suggested that the lbw decision against him didn’t stand as the ball had hit his gloves. It was the same replay when the TV umpire had adjudged him out a few minutes earlier.Three days later, Anamul Haque argued with the umpires but to no avail when he didn’t agree with an lbw decision in a match against Rangpur Riders. He was given out lbw by the TV umpire but Anamul didn’t want to leave the field, and was later fined for the offence. The BCB has said that the regular DRS will only be available during the knockout phase of this season’s BPL.
