  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reyna has struggled for minutes throughout the season with Dortmund in 2024-25, and has become more of a role player in late minutes off the bench across all competitions. He's made two starts in seven appearances in the UCL, playing 224 minutes in European action.

Dortmund, meanwhile, are looking to make their way to the competition's finale for the second-straight season. In the 2023-24 version of the competition, they were runners-up, falling short to Real Madrid in the championship game.

'Might be chasing 180 instead of 270' – Bangladesh upset with umpiring decisions in Durban Test

“I have seen such inconsistency in umpiring after a long time,” team director Khaled Mahmud says

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Apr-2022Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud called the umpiring in the Durban Test “inconsistent”, adding that Bangladesh could have been “chasing 180 instead of 270” had the decisions gone their way.Following Shakib Al Hasan’s tweet, which called for the ICC to reinstate neutral umpires – home-side umpires have been officiating since the Covid-19 pandemic began – Bangladesh selector Habibul Bashar also joined the criticism chorus, pointing out that many umpiring decisions over the course of the game had not gone in their favour.Related

Bangladesh lose three in quick time in 274-run chase

Bangladesh made lbw appeals on multiple occasions during South Africa’s second innings, especially in the first two sessions. They opted for a review when Dean Elgar was given not out on the field by umpire Marais Erasmus in the fifth over after being hit on his back leg. But he survived on umpire’s call as ball-tracking showed that the ball was only clipping off stump. Then, in the 19th over of the innings, Bangladesh successfully overturned Adrian Holdstock’s not-out decision for an lbw against Sarel Erwee. According to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentary, it “looked so out to the naked eye and it was a surprise that the on-field call was not given despite a screeching appeal”.In the 26th over, Khaled Ahmed was denied an lbw decision against Keegan Petersen. Bangladesh didn’t take that review but replays showed that it would have hit the stumps and would have been out had the review been taken.”There was no hiding from the [poor] umpiring in today’s play,” Mahmud said. “A number of decisions went against us. We also missed out on a wicket when the boys seemed scared of taking a review. If we got those decisions, we might be chasing 180 instead of 270. To be really honest, I have seen such inconsistency in umpiring after a long time. But the umpires are the best judge on the field. We have to accept the decisions.”Shakib, currently not with the team because of personal reasons, had tweeted during the match saying that ICC should bring back neutral umpires since the Covid-19 situation had improved in many cricket-playing countries.

“I totally agree with Shakib,” Bashar said. “Since Covid protocols are all but over, we should go back to neutral umpires. Umpires make mistakes but definitely neutral umpires ensure everyone gets the advantage. We have seen that on and off in this series. The DRS is certainly helpful but the umpire’s call isn’t really going in our favour.”When you have a neutral umpire in the middle, even if he makes a mistake, you don’t think it is deliberate. We have seen many decisions in this series which could have gone our way, but didn’t.”

DOMÍNIO DO LEÃO E POUCAS CHANCES…

William Oliveira cabeceou. Jaderson ficou com a sobra e arriscou. No entanto, errou a meta.

A equipe pernambucana continuava a assustar.

Maílson, porém, fez a defesa. No final, Ceballos aproveitou falta cobrada por Lucas Lima e mandou por cima do gol.

REAÇÃO DO TRICOLOR

O gol, enfim, saiu no final do jogo.

Haseeb Hameed does his best to impress as Notts make Middlesex toil

Eoin Morgan’s position as the most powerful man in English cricket was further reinforced on Thursday with confirmation that Rob Key’s has decided to appoint Brendon McCullum as the new coach of the men’s Test team.McCullum was the inspiration for England’s white-ball revolution, master of ceremonies at Morgan’s wedding and his coach when he captained KKR to the IPL final last year; they share passions for red wine, horse racing and gambling and while Morgan is not directly involved in the Test side, the influence he has had on English cricket will be clear throughout the Ben Stokes-McCullum era.So it was fitting that on the day McCullum’s appointment was ratified and confirmed publicly, Morgan was back at Lord’s – supposedly for a gym session, though he was seen in conversation with Stuart Broad pre-match and later on the Middlesex balcony catching up with team-mates with the start of the T20 Blast two weeks away.Morgan’s presence meant this was a chance for Nottinghamshire’s batters to make an impression. When Haseeb Hameed threw his head back and raised his bat after clipping Tim Murtagh’s first ball after tea off his pads for four to reach a first hundred of the season, he could feel confident that he had done so.Hameed’s first seven innings of the season had brought a solitary half-century, with several starts but an average of 26.83. His first-innings dismissal against Glamorgan last month appeared to confirm that luck had deserted him: he was run out at the non-striker’s end when James Weighell deflected Ben Slater’s straight drive into the stumps via his boot, sticking out a hopeful left leg as he slid over in his follow-through. This, then, was a welcome return to form at a ground where he made the final hundred of his Lancashire career three years ago.It was not a faultless innings: he played uncharacteristically aggressively early on – perhaps subconsciously changing his method after reading reports of McCullum’s impending appointment – and survived some awkward flirts in the off-stump channel. But his 112 set the game up for Notts against the early pace-setters in Division Two after they had been asked to bat first, reinforcing their well-founded belief that they are the best side outside of the top flight this year. He was well supported by Steven Mullaney, the club captain and one of the more reliable middle-order batters on the circuit, who targeted the short boundary towards the Grand Stand to good effect in his 91 not out.Hameed told ESPNcricinfo in a pre-season interview that he thinks finding a way to “get back up from rock bottom” has been a strength throughout his young career and after a gruelling Ashes tour he needed to do so once again.Eoin Morgan watches on from the Middlesex balcony•Alex Davidson/Getty Images

“It was just a case of trying to keep things simple,” Hameed said of his innings. “I felt like if I continued playing the way I was there would be a big score around the corner. I just had to keep that belief and thankfully I was able to get a decent one on the board today.”The pitch was a little on the slow side but there were a number of play-and-misses throughout the day and a lot of the dismissals were genuine nick-offs, even with an older ball at times like mine. I feel like there’s enough in there for us to take 20 wickets.”Hameed is, at best, an outside bet to play in the first Test of McCullum era, against New Zealand at this ground in three weeks’ time, and was keen to avoid the question of a recall. “I saw there was a decent chance he’d be made coach,” he said. “I know Broady was pretty excited about that appointment but honestly, there hasn’t been too much chat about it. I’m not even looking that far: for me, it’s always been important to keep things very short-term and very simple. That hasn’t changed.”Perhaps the day’s most intriguing innings came from Ben Duckett, who edged Ethan Bamber behind shortly after lunch for 42. He was handed an early life on 4 when Peter Handscomb put down a straightforward chance at first slip off Murtagh, but played brightly, driving confidently through extra cover and working through midwicket off his pads.Duckett is among a number of batters who could fill England’s vacancy at No. 3 and his unshackled approach in first-class cricket – his strike rate this season, 65.42, reflects a calculation that attack is the best option on seam-friendly Trent Bridge pitches – is in sync with McCullum’s preference for positivity. If he misses out on a Test recall, Morgan may well take a look at him in June’s ODI series in the Netherlands.Middlesex were unable to call on their star overseas signing Shaheen Shah Afridi, who has returned home to Pakistan to “rest and spend time with family and friends” before an ODI series against West Indies in a month’s time. He is due to return for the back end of the Blast’s group stages and Middlesex have plenty of fast-bowling depth but his absence is clearly a blow – as it would be to any team in the world. With the notable exception of Toby Roland-Jones, their seamers struggled to keep the scoring rate in check though Bamber, Murtagh and Martin Andersson all threatened at times. But it has been their batting that has been the major point of improvement this season: an attack of Broad, Luke Fletcher and a well-rested James Pattinson will offer a test of their progress at some stage on Friday.

As well as Solomon: 122-touch Leeds star was Farke’s unsung hero

Leeds United bounced back to winning ways in the Championship on Saturday with a thumping 4-0 victory over Oxford United at Elland Road.

Goals from Dan James, Jayden Bogle, Manor Solomon, and Brenden Aaronson secured all three points for the Whites, after they had failed to beat Preston North End at Deepdale last weekend.

Daniel Farke’s side needed a stoppage-time own goal to seal a point in Lancashire, but they showcased their true quality at the top end of the pitch with a ruthless display in West Yorkshire this time out.

One of the stars of the show for Leeds in the comprehensive victory at Elland Road was Tottenham Hotspur loanee Solomon, who scored his third of the season.

Manor Solomon's performance against Oxford

The forward set up the opening goal by bursting into the box down the left flank before sliding a perfect ball across for James to fire into the back of the net from close range.

Solomon recorded his second assist of the afternoon for the third goal of the game, playing a brilliant pass into the path of Aaronson – who brilliantly controlled and produced a composed finish past Jamie Cumming.

The Israel international then got his name on the scoresheet with a rasping near-post shot that was too powerful for the Oxford goalkeeper, who appeared to let it go through him.

Solomon, who also completed three of his five attempted dribbles, was directly involved in three of the four goals and deserves plenty of praise for his exceptional display on the left flank.

Amid all the praise that will likely come the way of the attacking players who scored or assisted the goals, an unsung hero from the game could be central midfielder Ao Tanaka.

Why Ao Tanaka was the unsung hero

The Japan international was not directly involved in any of the four goals but his outstanding performance in the middle of the park paved the foundations for Farke’s team to dominate and win.

His metronomic presence in possession and tenacious play off the ball helped to facilitate a terrific all-round team display from the Whites against Oxford.

He made one tackle and two interceptions without being dribbled past a single time, which shows that the opposition players struggled to get the better of him in transition moments when the away side did win the ball back.

As you can see in the table above, Tanaka was almost perfect in possession for the Whites, completing a staggering 100 passes – 28 more than central midfield partner Joe Rothwell (72).

Only Ethan Ampadu at centre-back (104) completed more passes than Tanaka and this speaks to how involved the former Fortuna Dusseldorf star was for Leeds, as he was central to the way they built the play and carved open the Oxford defence.

Therefore, the Japanese maestro was the unsung hero of the game for Farke because his sensational display was up there with Solomon’s contributions, despite not registering a goal or an assist.

Arteta earmarks £83m forward as a main candidate to join Arsenal in January

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has personally compiled a list of top contenders to reinforce the club’s forward ranks in January, with the Gunners widely tipped to move for new attacking options once we reach 2025.

Arsenal prepare for Ipswich Town after 5-1 win over Crystal Palace

Arsenal’s convincing 5-1 win at Crystal Palace was unfortunately overshadowed by star winger Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury, and news then emerged that alternative option Raheem Sterling sustained a knee problem, which will also keep him out for weeks.

Arsenal in "positive" talks with £46m Barcelona forward's reps ahead of January

The Gunners are in dire need of a new attacking option.

As a result, Arteta is now facing a real selection headache as he prepares to host struggling Ipswich Town in the Premier League tomorrow.

Gabriel Jesus, who’s recently returned to form with five goals in his last two games, is able to play out wide in place of Saka, as is Kai Havertz, while exciting youngster Ethan Nwaneri could even be deployed in that position.

There are a few options at Arteta’s disposal, but Saka will be an extremely sore miss for the north Londoners given just how imperative he is.

The England international, who was also sidelined for a short period earlier in the campaign, boasts an incredible 13 assists in all competitions already with nine goals to boot – and that will be near-impossible to replace.

It will be very intriguing to see how Arteta decides to field his Arsenal team against Ipswich in the 24-year-old’s absence, and the Spaniard has indirectly challenged his squad to step up while their key star is sidelined.

“I cannot be too specific because I don’t know, but it will be many weeks,” said Arteta on Saka’s lay-off.

“Obviously he’s a big player for us. You just have to see the impact that he has on the team, but it’s going to be a really good exercise for all of us to think about ways to overcome another challenge, because we’ve already had a lot in the season.

“We have to look internally at what we have and be creative, do a very good exercise again. How can we mould the squad? How can we adapt to the circumstances and be different? We cannot pretend to be the same. We’re going to have to be different and try to find the best way to do it and be very competitive and win a lot of games.”

While Arsenal reportedly contemplate signing a Saka alternative in January, reports suggest that a new striker is also firmly on the club’s to-do list ahead of the winter transfer window.

Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram a "main candidate" to join Arsenal in January

Indeed, a report from Spain has claimed that Arteta has personally compiled a list of “main candidates” to join Arsenal in January – and one of them is Inter Milan star Marcus Thuram.

The Frenchman boasts 13 goals and six assists in 21 appearances across all competitions so far this season, which has apparently garnered interest from Arteta, who’s earmarked Thuram as one of his top three striker targets alongside Bundesliga duo Benjamin Sesko and Victor Boniface.

The 27-year-old won’t come cheap, though, as it is estimated he’ll cost around £83 million to prise away from the San Siro.

It is very debatable whether Arsenal will part with that sort of money mid-season, regardless of Arteta’s fondness for Thuram, with both Sesko and Boniface also commanding lower price tags.

King unbeaten 91 and Hosein's four-for seal series for West Indies

Visitors overcome top-order wobble to beat Netherlands 2-0 in three-match series

Ashish Pant02-Jun-2022West Indies 217 for 5 (King 91*, Carty 43*, de Leede 2-46) beat Netherlands 214 (Edwards 68, O’Dowd 51, Hosein 4-39) by five wicketsBrandon King and Keacy Carty’s career-best efforts of 91 not out and 43 not out, respectively, in an unbeaten 118-run stand for the sixth wicket, rescued West Indies from 99 for 5 and led them to a series win against Netherlands in Amstelveen. King backed up his unbeaten 51-ball 58* from the first ODI with another half-century, and found excellent company in Carty as the duo chased down a target of 215 with five wickets in hand.West Indies would have hoped for a much easier chase after Akeal Hosein’s career-best 4 for 39 helped bring about a Netherlands collapse of 10 for 113. However, fast bowlers Logan van Beek and Bas de Leede fashioned a collapse of their own to threaten an upset in the second ODI.King and Carty, though, resurrected the chase well. While King was more adventurous in his shot-making, Carty, playing just his second ODI, took his time to settle in before opening up his shoulders as the visitors eventually cruised home with 27 balls to spare.Earlier, opting to bat first, Netherlands openers Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd laid a solid platform in a 101-run opening stand. Both batters went toe-to-toe with each other in their run-making. Vikramjit got the boundary counter running for the hosts as he ramped Alzarri Joseph over the slip cordon in the fourth over before driving the same bowler through mid-off. O’Dowd, initially sedate, picked Kyle Mayers through the backward square leg region for a four and then drove him down the ground in his next over. It didn’t help that West Indies dropped both openers thrice inside the first 15 overs as Netherlands kept a steady run-rate going.Netherlands brought up their 100 in the 21st over, but it all went downhill for them thereon. As was the case in the first ODI, the spinners, Hayden Walsh and Hosein, brought about their downfall. Vikramjit was the first to depart when he pushed an innocuous, tossed-up ball straight back at Hosein for 46. While O’Dowd reached his fourth ODI half-century, he was soon undone by a short-of-a-length Hosein delivery that crept very low to bowl him. With both set batters dismissed, Netherlands lost their way. Hosein sent back de Leede for 0 before Nkrumah Bonner claimed Musa Ahmed for 7. Hosein then claimed his fourth wicket, getting rid of Teja Nidamanuru for 4, with Netherlands suddenly finding themselves 159 for 5.Scott Edwards, batting at No. 3, did his best to take his side to a respectable total but did not get much support. He struck 68 off 89 balls and was the last wicket to fall as the hosts failed to bat out their 50 overs. For West Indies, Hosein was the pick of the bowlers, while Joseph picked up two wickets at the end.West Indies’ chase got off on the wrong foot with Shamarh Brooks and Shai Hope falling inside the first ten overs. While van Beek had Brooks caught at first slip for 6, de Leede left Hope’s stumps in a mess with a stunning in-dipper for 18. de Leede then struck again, trapping Bonner for 15, while Nicholas Pooran dragged Aryan Dutt back onto his stumps, having hit him for a six a few deliveries earlier.King and Mayers forged a bit of a fightback for the visitors, but once the latter fell on 22, with the team score on 99, Netherlands would have a sniffed an upset. King, though, made sure he did not lose focus. At no stage did he let the Netherlands bowlers bowl too many dot balls, and even when Carty failed to rotate the strike, King kept the boundaries flowing. Netherlands fluffed a couple of run-out attempts, but apart from that, there was little the two West Indies batters offered in terms of chances.King, who smashed nine fours and three sixes during his knock, was named Player of the Match for his effort.

Celtic may wait until summer to land deal to sign "unbelievable" PL ace

As they look to maintain their place at the top of the Scottish Premiership beyond the current campaign, Celtic may now wait until the summer in an attempt to land a bargain deal for a midfielder from the English Premier League.

Celtic transfer news

When the Bhoys lost Matt O’Riley in the summer transfer window, there may have been some concern over their ability to fend off competition from Rangers whilst also attempting to cause a few upsets on the Champions League stage. A few months later, however, those doubts have been well and truly put to bed.

Celtic and Rodgers want to sign two attackers in January with cash to spend

There is money to spend midway through the season.

By
Henry Jackson

Nov 29, 2024

Rangers have been far from up to scratch and Celtic only look likely to extend their dominance. Meanwhile, they’ve already picked up a memorable victory over Bundesliga side RB Leipzig as well as earned a point against Club Brugge on the European stage, with eight points put towards a potential last-16 place.

Things could get even better when 2025 arrives, especially if the Bhoys manage to land a bargain deal. According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Celtic may now wait until the summer to attempt to sign Christian Eriksen when his contract comes to an end at Manchester United.

The Scottish giants are unlikely to land a January deal given the Dane’s hefty £150,000-a-week salary going alongside any potential transfer fee, acting as a major stumbling block in the transfer. However, if Eriksen is willing to take a pay cut in the summer, Celtic could yet land an undeniable bargain for a player still capable of playing among Europe’s best.

Replacing fellow Dane O’Riley, who swapped Celtic for Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer, Eriksen could take Scotland by storm if he accepted Celtic’s potential proposal.

"Unbelievable" Eriksen could follow O'Riley path

A player at the back end of his career rather than in his prime like O’Riley, Eriksen can still follow a similar path to his countryman by swapping English football for a place in Celtic’s midfield. And despite their age differences, not many would doubt Eriksen’s ability to replicate what O’Riley did for Brendan Rodgers’ side, especially in his final season.

Eriksen’s story is an undeniable fairytale. There were doubts that the Dane would even step foot on a football pitch again after his collapse at Euro 2020. Not only did he fight back, but he climbed his way back to the top by earning a move to Manchester United via Brentford.

Full of praise for Eriksen, Brentford boss Thomas Frank told reporters in 2022 (via The Standard): “Christian is a top player, an unbelievable character and he brings quality and calmness to the team. You can give it to Christian and he’ll always find a solution.”

Now, in one last big potential move, it could be Celtic who benefit from Eriksen’s experience and “unbelievable character” in the middle of the park.
