Rangers missed out on "world class" star in 2023, now he’s worth £38m

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement may have made a host of signings during the transfer window, but it is clear he missed out on several big targets too.

Albion Rrahmani was the notable name to slip through Clement’s grasp, as the striker looked like he could have made the move to Ibrox, but instead, it was Sparta Prague who were the beneficiaries.

The Belgian isn’t the only manager to see key targets failing to make the move to Scotland, moving elsewhere instead.

Phillipe Clement

Steven Gerrard had several players in his sights during his spell, while Michael Beale eyed a couple of players who would have immediately improved the first-team squad.

One such player has just sealed a move to Paris Saint-Germain, signifying that the club clearly messed up majorly with regard to missing out on him.

Rangers wanted Willian Pacho in 2023

Back in January 2023, during the early stages of Beale’s reign at Ibrox, it was clear he was aiming to bolster his squad in order to catch Celtic in the title race.

According to reports in Belgium at the time (via the Daily Record), the Gers had sent scouts to monitor Royal Antwerp defender Willian Pacho, who had shone on the continent following his move from Ecuador just a year previously.

It wasn’t just Rangers who were keen, with AS Monaco showing plenty of interest in the youngster, but nothing materialised, and he joined Eintracht Frankfurt that summer, sealing a move to the Bundesliga.

Willian Pacho for Frankfurt.

Following a wonderful season in Germany, PSG came in for the centre-back, managing to bring him to France, and it was certainly a what-could-have-been moment for the Light Blues.

How Willian Pacho has performed since joining PSG

The French giants shelled out a staggering €45m (£38m) to sign the defender, who became the first-ever Ecuadorian in the club’s history in the process.

Dubbed as “absolutely world-class” by his manager at Frankfurt, Dino Toppmoller, Pacho clearly has all the required attributes to perform at the highest level.

In the German top flight last term, Pacho ranked in the top 12% for ball recoveries per 90, while ranking in the top 13% for successful take-on percentage per 90, showcasing his abilities to win back the ball and take on opposition players regularly.

The centre-back has already begun to shine for PSG in Ligue 1, averaging a 95% pass success rate per game, while also winning 61% of his total duels and losing possession just 5.7 times per game.

These statistics are evidence of him settling into the French side with ease, and he could become one of their most important players this term.

Rangers clearly made a mistake by not bringing him to Ibrox when they had the chance back at the start of 2023, especially as he could have been available for a realistic transfer fee.

Now, Pacho is starring in one of the biggest teams in Europe with the chance to win the Champions League.

TalkSPORT pundit says Arteta now risks losing £265k-per-week Arsenal star

TalkSPORT pundit Dean Saunders has claimed that Mikel Arteta risks losing a big-name member of his Arsenal squad if one thing doesn’t change.

Arsenal preparing for north London derby without key players

The Gunners are preparing to face-off against Tottenham on Sunday, with Arteta looking to get back to winning ways on the biggest stage after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at home to Brighton a fortnight ago.

Arteta confirms "great news" for Arsenal ahead of Spurs with injury update

A key player looks ready to feature against Tottenham.

Arsenal travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium unbeaten from their opening three Premier League games, but their 100 per cent record ended at the hands of Brighton at the Emirates, with fierce title rivals Man City yet to drop points.

Arteta will be desperate to come away from N17 with all three points after signing a brand-new three-year contract and committing his future to Arsenal, but it won’t be an easy task for the Spaniard, who has a few tactical conundrums staring him in the face.

Summer signing Mikel Merino is ruled out through injury, having fractured his shoulder in training at London Colney, while Declan Rice will also be a sore miss after he picked up two yellow cards and was sent off in their last game.

The good news for Arsenal is that club captain Martin Odegaard could actually play against Tottenham, despite initial fears that the Norway international would be out for weeks after twisting his ankle on international duty.

Gabriel Jesus and Riccardo Calafiori are in the same boat, with Arteta stating in his pre-match Arsenal press conference on Friday that both men are contending to be fit for the derby, though it’s also no guarantee they’ll play.

“Gabi was out there,” said Arteta on Jesus’ fitness. “He’s got another session tomorrow and if everything goes well he’ll be ready to be selected in the squad which is great news for us. He’s [Calafiori] another one where we’ll have to wait another day or so.”

It is still touch-and-go whether Jesus, Calafiori and Odegaard will be able to start, but at least there is still a chance – going by Arteta’s update.

Dean Saunders says Gabriel Jesus could decide to leave Arsenal

If Jesus is ready, Arteta will have a dilemma on his hands. Reports suggest that Raheem Sterling could be played as a false-nine against Tottenham, with Kai Havertz relinquishing his favoured position so he can drop into midfield.

This would mean the £265,000-per-week Brazilian is benched for Spurs, as he has often been in the last 12 months. Ten of Jesus’ 27 league appearances came off the bench last season, and the former Man City star has played just five Premier League minutes so far this term.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus

Speaking to TalkSPORT, via The Boot Room, pundit Saunders believes that Jesus could decide to leave Arsenal if he doesn’t start getting more game time.

The 27-year-old joined from Man City in 2022 for around £45 million, and has gone to rack up 19 goals and 15 assists in 70 appearances across all competitions.

Virat Kohli: 'Win or lose this game, cricket does not stop for us'

India captain says WTC final is part of India’s “quest for excellence”

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jun-20213:13

‘WTC a step in the right direction for Test cricket’ – Virat Kohli

The ICC is promoting the inaugural World Test Championship final as the ‘Ultimate Test’, but India captain Virat Kohli has said that the result of the one-off match against New Zealand cannot decide which is the “best” team in the format. Kohli said that his team would instead treat the final as part of India’s “quest for excellence”.”If you are talking about Test cricket and deciding who is the best Test team in the world on one game over a period of five days, that’s not the reality of the truth,” Kohli said on Thursday during the pre-match media briefing. “It is not going to reflect anything for people who really understand the game and know exactly what has gone on in the last four to five years and how the teams have fared. You can very well look back at history and focus on things that didn’t go your way. At the end of the day you realise you play sport and you are going to be beaten and you are going to win on a particular day.”Watch cricket on ESPN+

The WTC final is available in the US on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match.

The last ICC tournament India won was the 2013 Champions Trophy, when MS Dhoni was the captain. In the 2016 T20 World Cup, India lost in the semi-final. A year later they would lose to Pakistan in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy. In the 2019 World Cup, Kane Williamson’s New Zealand pipped Kohli’s India in the semi-final. However, Kohli remained unfazed about being on the cusp of possibly lifting his first ICC Trophy.

“For us as a team we have been on a quest for excellence for a while now. And we are going to continue to be on that path regardless of what happens in this game.”Virat Kohli

“If you win this game, cricket does not stop for us. If you lose this game, cricket does not stop for us. Our processes, our mindset is what matters to us the most and we are striving for excellence every day. And we step on to the field every Test match or every game that we play wanting to win. That’s the most you can ask of your players – to stand up in tough situations and keep proving that you belong here and you take a lot of pride in playing for India.”We have not come here to just play one-off Test. We have come here to play six Tests in the English summer. Our players understand well their strengths and they understand how to utilise those strengths and they will do that during these six Tests.”India’s ‘quest for excellence’
While India head coach Ravi Shastri had said the WTC final would be the “biggest” match for India, Kohli downplayed the superlatives. Asked whether winning the WTC final would be on par with winning the 2011 World Cup, Kohli said he wanted India to treat it like another Test match without getting carried away. “For me this is another Test match that has to be played. These things are very exciting from the outside where there is so much importance and so much other extra stuff that’s attached to one game and it sort of becomes do-and-die.Related

“For us as a team we have been on a quest for excellence for a while now,” Kohli said. “And we are going to continue to be on that path regardless of what happens in this game. We have no doubts whatsoever in our abilities and what we can do as a side.”As an individual player, look, we won the 2011 World Cup which was a great moment for all of us. But cricket goes on. Just the way life goes on. And you have to treat failure and success the same way, and you have to treat the so-called outstandingly big moments pretty similar to the other moments as well.”So, yes, it is an occasion that has to be enjoyed from our point of view, but it is not different for us or no more important for us than the first Test match that we played together as a young group of players back in the day when we were trying to come up the ranks. So, yes, the mindset remains the same.”

Dawid Malan fills his boots, wellies and slippers with 199 as Yorkshire take command

To understand why most of the spectators at Headingley enjoyed today’s cricket in all its gourmet and gourmandising glory you probably need to have paid close attention to Yorkshire’s batting performances this season. They have often been bloody awful. Before this match Steve Patterson’s side had been bowled out for 230 or fewer in five of their seven first innings and the skipper acknowledged that last week’s defeat had been on its way for a while. The fact that it was inflicted by Lancashire merely gave the gladius an extra twist. A side rarely prospers if the average score at which its third wicket falls is 85. Watching roobish like that on the live stream may have prompted a few domestic traumas. Now it is three o’clock on this warm Saturday in early June. It is an afternoon out of J L Carr, an afternoon of long moments and great stillness, an afternoon for which to be newly grateful. And Yorkshire are 465 for 6. This is abundance without recent precedent. Having taken nine batting bonus points from their previous seven games – the lowest in the land – the home side have collected a maximum five from this innings. Their effort has been held together by Dawid Malan, who has filled his boots, wellies and slippers with runs. Ten of his 22 fours have been cut or worked backward of square on the off side. Not since Harry Lime had his clogs popped by Holly Martins in a Vienna sewer has the absence of a third man been so noticeable. The only severe disappointment of the day was suffered ten minutes ago: Malan was bowled by Jack Carson for 199 when his attempted angled deflection merely allowed a fine ball, bowled from over the wicket, to turn past the blade and hit the left-hander’s off stump. He needed that single to become the first batsman to score double hundreds in consecutive innings for Yorkshire.Malan’s innings was a triumph of technique, a near-perfect example of a batsman with discriminating knowledge of his particular game and in perfect command of its wristy cuts and gentle glides. Few people this dream-laden hour will recall that he was dropped on only 27 yesterday afternoon when Travis Head spilled a slip catch off Henry Crocombe.

Dawid Malan – In his own words

  • On being more fearless in first-class cricket since his last Test in 2018:

  • “In international stuff, it was slightly different when you’re playing against good bowlers and your place is under threat all of the time. But I’ve tried to learn from my failures at Test cricket and put that into practice in four-day cricket. Since 2019, I think my record speaks for itself just having that fearless approach in four-day cricket and backing my technique and way of playing.

  • On a possible Test return:

  • “I wouldn’t be here playing four-day cricket if I didn’t want to play Test cricket again. I still feel like I’ve got a hell of a lot to give. Whether I’m good enough, that’s not my decision. I just have to keep scoring runs. Hopefully, if I keep getting big scores like this, I can put pressure on the people who make decisions.”

  • On previous Ashes (2017-18):

  • “I think I played well in that Ashes series. I now know my game better. Being back in the T20s and the odd ODI, I’ve learnt what I need to do to perform at that level. But Test cricket is a different mentality and there’s more scrutiny. In my last five Tests, I probably didn’t handle that as well as I could have. Hopefully I’d be in a better position now.”

Carson deserved his wicket, though. Four overs before his dismissal, Malan had produced his most atypical shot against the spinner, a gorgeous extra-cover drive for six, but the Ulsterman was the pick of Ben Brown’s attack throughout the innings. Very few young spinners have his ability to adjust their length when they see a batsman advancing down the pitch and there have been times in this innings when Carson has been the only bowler Brown could trust to throttle the run rate. His extra bounce accounted for Gary Ballance, who was caught behind for 77 in the fourth over of the day. Malan received a standing ovation, of course. It was the loudest applause heard here since 12.08, when news reached Leeds, probably at lightning speed, that Lancashire had lost at Cardiff. That was more like it.For yes, there is certainly evidence that folk in these parts are getting worried. At the junction of North Lane and Bennett Road, just a couple of good hits from the cricket ground, the simple graffito “Gooch!” is daubed on a white wall. It is not known whether the exclamation mark was added after Yorkshire’s defeat in last week’s Roses Match; whether, in other words, a polite suggestion had turned into a frantic demand that Martyn Moxon signs a 67-year-old former England opener who last played a County Championship match in 1997. But then losing to that lot across the way can do alarming things to people round this way; they fear a run on their building societies.Malan calmed such worries and Harry Duke’s accomplished fifty reinforced his reputation as a fine player. Yorkshire were bowled out for 558 seven overs after tea; it is their highest score since 2016. Having had Harry Brook strangled for 49 in the morning, Jamie Atkins picked up three quick wickets and finished with 5 for 98, the first five-wicket haul of his three-match career. They are nice figures if you can get ’em. Carson caught and bowled Patterson, who was probably disoriented by having to bat when the scoreboard didn’t read something like130 for 7.Related

Rather suddenly, though, there was fresh tension in our cricket as Tom Haines and Ali Orr began Sussex’s task of batting most of eight hours to secure the draw. Yet to the surprise of many at Headingley and to the disappointment of even more, the openers batted so coolly for 23 overs that a wicket did not look like falling. Patterson used his five main bowlers but Orr played as diligently as he had when facing the new ball on Thursday morning. This is his first-class debut and he looks a proper batsman.Haines, of course, is in the season of his life but only because he has grafted fresh responsibility onto the rich talent that gave him a century against Durham at Arundel just three summers and many years ago. Between them the openers seemed to tranquilise the home attack. And though there is still so much to do to deny Yorkshire the win they need, we should recall that seven of this Sussex team are 23 years old or under. They will be learning so much, even from four hard days such as these. This is a glad season for them, too. For us all, mayhap, for us all.

Wants the move: Leeds in advanced talks to sign £2m+ goalscoring midfielder

Leeds United are thought to be in advanced talks to sign a goalscoring midfielder for Daniel Farke, according to a new report.

Midfielder wanted at Leeds before deadline

Manor Solomon became the club’s sixth signing of the summer recently, joining Joe Rodon, Joe Rothwell, Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle and Largie Ramazani at Elland Road. The Israel international joined on a season-long loan from Tottenham and looks set to help fill the void left by Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter.

However, after losing a number of star players over the course of the window, including midfielders Archie Gray and Glen Kamara, another addition has been wanted for a number of weeks alongside Rothwell.

Farke said during Leeds' pre-season tour of Germany last month that a new signing in the middle of the pitch is wanted: “Overall we have lost two really good midfield options with Archie Gray and also Glen Kamara. We brought in Joe Rothwell, also a pretty experienced player and also good in possession, can chip in with goals and great set-pieces.

“So happy so far, but especially in the central position we won’t fall asleep until the window is really closed. And yes, definitely. In many positions we are already more or less done in our planning but it’s definitely one of the positions where we could do perhaps also with a new addition.”

Terms agreed: Report now claims £15m midfielder has said yes to Leeds move

A number of targets have been linked, including Koln’s Dejan Ljubicic and Sheffield United’s Gus Hamer. The 49ers Enterprises appear to have pulled out of the race to sign Ljubicic, whereas a £13m bid for Hamer was rejected by the Blades. That appears to have led Leeds back to a 2023 target.

Leeds in advanced talks to sign Ao Tanaka

According to Football Insider, Leeds are in advanced talks to sign Ao Tanaka from Fortuna Dusseldorf in the final days of the window. The report states that the 25-year-old is keen on a move and that he has a release clause in the region of £2.65m.

The Japan international is also out of contract in under 12 months time, so it looks as if a transfer to Elland Road could go through before the deadline.

Tanaka can play as a holding, central or attacking midfielder, as per Transfermarkt, so would offer plenty of versatility to Farke’s options alongside Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev and Rothwell.

West Ham consider move for free agent striker after Fullkrug injury blow

West Ham United and manager Julen Lopetegui are considering whether to move for a free agent striker after summer signing Niclas Fullkrug's injury blow.

Fullkrug suffers injury for Germany in worry for West Ham

Fullkrug, who signed for West Ham in a £27 million deal from Borussia Dortmund in early August, missed Germany's 2-2 draw with the Netherlands on Tuesday evening after sustaining an achilles tendon injury.

The 31-year-old has played 63 Premier League minutes under Lopetegui thus far, making three appearances off the substitute's bench, with Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann confirming he won't feature against Fulham this weekend.

"Unfortunately, the area is a bit problematic because it's the transition to the Achilles tendon at the bottom of the calf," said Nagelsmann on Fullkrug's injury.

"If something were to happen, it would be long-term. That's why we're not taking any risks. He will have to take a few days off. He will not be playing in the Premier League at the weekend."

Fullkrug has since returned to West Ham for a medical assessment, with Lopetegui set to find out the extent of his injury as the Hammers await a further medical diagnosis.

“West Ham have confirmed an injury to new forward signing and German international Fullkrug,” said insider ExWHUemployee.

“A top source confirmed that the player will be out for Germany’s game and is returning to West Ham for treatment. The injury is thought to be an Achilles heal tendon and calf injury and the club will monitor and scan the injury to get an official diagnosis of how serious the injury is.

“The source finished with saying “he hates international breaks” and I think as fans we all agree. We will keep you updated.”

West Ham consider signing free agent striker after Fullkrug injury

The free agent market is still a solution for Tim Steidten and co in regards to bringing in more talent after the transfer window, and they can still choose to sign one until the Premier League squad submission deadline on Friday evening.

West Ham have been in talks with ex-Sheffield United stalwart John Egan, who played in a behind-closed-doors friendly for the Irons against Dagenham and Redbridge last week.

According to GiveMeSport, West Ham have considered signing a free agent striker after Fullkrug's injury – with the severity of his problem set to determine whether Lopetegui deems it a priority.

The east Londoners apparently refuse to rule out the possibility of bringing in a quick-fire replacement for Fullkrug and did ponder a swoop for ex-Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, before the Dutchman joined Corinthians.

If West Ham don't opt to make a Bosman attacking signing, out-of-favour striker Danny Ings is thought to be ready to seize an opportunity to impress under Lopetegui.

Man Utd’s exciting Carrington star must now start over Casemiro & Ugarte

There was a lot of excitement heading into this season for Manchester United fans, as while their Premier League form was dreadful last year, the club had a busy summer in the transfer market.

Unfortunately, Erik ten Hag’s side have already burst that bubble of hope. After winning their first game against Fulham last month, they proceeded to lose back-to-back games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool.

There were plenty of poor performers in both games, but Casemiro was notably off the pace, as he was last season, and while Manuel Ugarte should hopefully be his long-term replacement, the manager has claimed he won’t be match fit for some time.

However, there might just be a solution to this problem: one of the club’s own should come in to replace the Brazilian for the game away to Southampton.

Casemiro's recent form

Casemiro’s tenure at Manchester United has been a strange one, as when he arrived from Real Madrid for £70m in the summer of 2022, there were already some doubts about his age.

Casemiro

That said, over the course of that season, the Brazilian was fantastic and proved his doubters wrong. In fact, he was even named the signing of the season by Gary Neville.

However, for whatever reason, the legendary midfielder suddenly and dramatically regressed at the start of last year, and instead of being a monstrous defensive midfielder able to stop attacks before they began, he became a cumbersome liability who regularly got his side into trouble.

It got so bad towards the end of the campaign that former defender Jamie Carragher gave him the now-famous advice to “leave the football before the football leaves you.”

Unfortunately for the five-time Champions League winner, and United for that matter, his calamitous form has continued into this season, and so far he’s made two errors leading to a goal in just three games.

In all, it’s time the club moved on from the 32-year-old star, and while Ugarte will likely play in his place for most of the campaign, Ten Hag has a youngster in the squad ready to step up.

Why Toby Collyer should start vs Southampton

Yes, the youngster in question is 20-year-old Toby Collyer, who joined United from Brighton in March 2022.

By then, the then 18-year-old prospect had already captained England’s U16 and U17 sides and has since gone on to make 28 appearances for the Red Devils’ U21 side and three for their U18 side.

However, it was at the start of this month that the 5 foot 11 gem caught the attention of the wider footballing world as he made his Premier League debut, coming off the bench to replace Casemiro at half time against Liverpool.

It was a trial by fire for the inexperienced Worthing-born midfielder, and while he couldn’t help the team come out with any points, he did look more assured than the Brazilian veteran and was given a 6/10 by the Express’ Amos Murphy, while the 32-year-old got a brutal but fair 1/10.

Now, it’s hard to fully judge a young midfielder off of 45 minutes in a derby and half an hour in the Community Shield. Still, the early signs are encouraging, and those in the know are incredibly excited about his future prospects.

For example, in March 2022, former Brighton U18 coach Mark Beard described him as someone “who plays like two men” and said that managers would “want 11 of these type of players in the team.”

Lastly, while no game is easy in the Premier League, Southampton will probably be one of the weakest teams United play this season, so if Ten Hag wants to hand out more minutes to promising youngsters, then today is the day.

He's like De Jong: Man Utd have already sold their next Gomes for just £850k

The talented midfielder looks promising.

1 ByJack Salveson Holmes Sep 12, 2024

Ultimately, fans should not expect the world from Collyer just yet, but with Ugarte supposedly not fully fit and Casemiro all out at sea, the 20-year-old deserves to start today.

Tim Southee: New Zealand haven't given up on chance of forcing victory against England

Jamieson says “everyone’s ready to go” and “push for a win”

Alan Gardner05-Jun-2021Tim Southee said New Zealand had not given up on the possibility of forcing victory at Lord’s, despite a day being lost to rain. The visiting side have made the running in the first Test, with Southee’s six-wicket haul helping them to a 103-run lead, but England were kept afloat by a battling hundred from Rory Burns.Southee picked up five of the eight England wickets to fall on the fourth day, claiming a spot on the Lord’s honours board for the second time in his career. However, Burns’ efforts in compiling 132 from 297 balls helped repel New Zealand after they reduced England to 140 for 6 – still more than 200 in arrears – during the morning session.New Zealand needed to force the pace, and were immediately up and running when Kyle Jamieson found the outside edge of England captain Joe Root with his opening delivery. Burns and Root had lifted England from trouble on day two, before rain further checked New Zealand’s advance on Friday but, following Jamieson’s breakthrough, an inspired spell from Southee saw three wickets fall without addition to the score.Related

Tim Southee, Rory Burns dominate hard-fought fourth day

Rory Burns earned this recall, and needed this innings

Burns then dug in to add a valuable 63-run stand with Ollie Robinson, and another 52 for the last wicket alongside James Anderson – although he could have been stumped on 77 and was dropped at slip on 88.”Yeah, with the wicket of Joe Root from the first ball of the day, we probably couldn’t ask for a better start,” Southee said. “It was a dream start to take those early wickets but we knew there was going to be a counterpunch from England at some stage, they’re too good a side just to roll over.”Their lower order, especially Robinson, played a nice hand there, and Jimmy hanging around with Burns at the end, putting on over 50, blunted our attack towards the end. But I think if we’d turned up at the start of the day and been told we’re gonna walk off in the position we’re in now we’d have been pretty happy.Tim Southee ended with 6 for 43 and bowled eight maidens•AFP via Getty Images

“Losing yesterday doesn’t help, but there’s 98 overs tomorrow and it’s always great to turn up on the last day with all results possible. Who knows what may happen but it’s great to be in a position where we can push on. You play to win Test matches for your country and a Test win at Lord’s would be pretty special, so I’d imagine we’ll chat overnight, get together as a side and come up with a plan for day five.”Jamieson, who bagged three wickets, wasn’t too harsh on his team-mates for giving Burns a couple of chances and concurred with Southee on going for the win.”Ideally you want to take those chances; games don’t always pan out perfectly the way you want them to,” Jamieson said after the day’s play. “I certainly don’t believe that there’s time taken from the game in terms of us not being able to push for a win. We’re still ahead in this game. I guess we have the ability to control how this game is set up in the first session tomorrow and probably having that rest on day three, everyone’s ready to go for tomorrow and we’ll certainly push for a win, that’s for sure.”It’s a couple of sessions and there’s a Test victory on the line, I have no doubt that all of us will be pushing as hard as we can and just see that we get through. There’s nothing guaranteed if you bring that attitude but without a doubt we’ll certainly be bringing that, that’s for sure.”New Zealand were missing Southee’s regular new-ball partner Trent Boult for this match, but have had more than enough firepower to keep England in check. Southee’s figures of 6 for 43 bettered the 6 for 50 he claimed at Lord’s in 2013, and he may yet have the chance to help his side push for a first win on the ground this century.”Any time you contribute to the side and do your job it’s very satisfying, and I guess it’s that little bit sweeter when you do it at such a special ground like Lord’s,” he said. “It was a nice day today, and looking forward to getting out there again tomorrow at some stage.”Playing his seventh Test and his first outside New Zealand, Jamieson said he had learnt a lot from Southee, who was playing his 78th, about specific skills and the workings of Test cricket at a broader level.”I think just around the ebbs and flows of Test cricket,” Jamieson said. “Like we’ve spoken a lot around skills like wrist position, moving the ball, when to come wide of the crease. We’re always having conversations around the tactical side of the game. But it’s just an understanding of how Test cricket works. When you’ve played 70-odd Tests, you learn how Test cricket tends to flow and when there’s times when things don’t happen as quickly and as good and about staying patient and on the opposite end of the spectrum when things are happening and you put the hammer down. So those intricacies around the flow of Test cricket is the biggest thing for me.”0410 GMT: The story was updated with Kyle Jamieson’s quotes after an embargo
