Clayton Lambert – 'USA should be hosting the World Cup'

I haven’t seen much top-level cricket lately, not even the current West Indies tour, because where I live in Atlanta, there aren’t many satellite dishes available. I’ve been living in USA permanently since 1999, when I retired from international cricket after the South Africa tour.I’m looking forward to the Champions Trophy, but I guess I don’t have as much of a buzz as the other guys, because I’ve done it all before with West Indies. Still, there’s no doubt that representative cricket lifts the spirits, and it’s sure to be one of my biggest challenges. I’m looking forward to giving something back to a game that’s been very good to me.Cricket in the USA is mostly played at league level, and occasionally there’s the chance to play regional cricket, which is the highest form of the game over here. So all in all, it’s a bit less of a challenge, and it’s nice to get out and do some serious stuff from time to time.During my international career, I earned a reputation as a hard hitter of a cricket ball, although I was also capable of nice long innings as well. Admittedly, in our three-day Intercontinental Cup games, I’ve fared pretty badly, although that’s largely been down to the indifferent wickets – they haven’t been up to the standard that I’m used to.The bowlers have dominated in the Intercontinental Cup, but in the one-day game I’ve done better. American audiences are used to more hustle and bustle in their sports – if a fan wants to see a baseball game, he’ll give over one afternoon to do so – but three-day cricket is too time-consuming for this audience.I was a bit stunned that USA missed out on hosting any matches in the World Cup – if cricket hopes to make inroads over here, it has to stick its neck out and have a feel of the market. There’s not even any real need for the game to compete with the established sports, such as baseball and football, because there’s a place for everything in America. There are a lot of dollars over here.Besides, cricket is a very Commonwealth-orientated sport, so there is a huge immigrant population in the USA who are all yearning for the sport. League cricket is really exploding at the moment – last year in Atlanta, seven or eight new teams were formed, and you’d be astonished just how popular the game is in New York at present. All the more reason why the World Cup should be coming here. There was a good atmosphere down in Florida for our Intercontinental Cup match against Canada last month, although sadly the pitch left a bit to be desired, and it wasn’t a fair assessment of our skills. The Champions Trophy next month will a more relevant assessment of where we have reached as a team.Basically, we are just a bunch of league players – amateurs taking on professionals – so we are going to be up against it in the competition. But we are sure to learn a hell of a lot while we are here. And next year, we’ll be competing in a World-Cup qualifying tournament in Ireland, where the conditions are likely to be similar. So for us it is a win-win situation.

Tanvir and Watson combine to knock Islamabad down

Quetta Gladiators were able to make short work of a total that seemed challenging thanks to their top order’s fire power

Danyal Rasool17-Feb-2019

Shane Watson holds his shape after punching the ball•PSL

How the game played outCareer-best PSL figures from Sohail Tanvir coupled with the type of destructive innings Shane Watson has played so often in the PSL allowed Quetta Gladiators to maintain their unbeaten record as they trounced defending champions Islamabad United by seven wickets.Quetta had begun dominantly, with Tanvir’s double-wicket maiden. Before long, Islamabad found themselves wobbling at 8 for 3, and it took spirited rearguards from Asif Ali, Hussain Talat, and most impressively Wayne Parnell – who smashed 41 off 20 – to dig them out of that hole. Despite the best efforts of Fawad Ahmed, the other star bowler alongside Tanvir, Islamabad demonstrated their batting depth, posting a very respectable 157.Given the low-scoring games in Dubai on Saturday, it appeared a good total, but the brilliance of Umar Akmal turned it into something of a stroll. After Ahmed Shehzad and Rilee Rossouw perished early, he took charge with Watson happy to play second fiddle. The struggling Shadab Khan came in for the greatest punishment, several boundaries and one 98 metre six bringing the asking ate sharply down. When an excellent catch from Cameron Delport finally dismissed Umar, the required rate was down to 7. Watson hadn’t yet entered top gear, and when he did, Islamabad found themselves about 25 runs short, his 55-ball 81 taking Quetta home with 10 balls to spare.Turning pointWith Quetta having so dominated the start and finish, it’s hard to pinpoint a moment upon which the match turned. But Islamabad’s fate was sealed when Parnell bowled his first over to Umar. With Quetta at 33 for 2 and scoring at just 6.6, a win was by no means assured, but Umar smashing two fours and a six off that over set the template for how the chase would go. With Watson joining in, Islamabad simply didn’t bowl well enough to make this interesting.Mohammad Sami bowled Watson on 29 only to realise he had done so off a no-ball, while Rumman Raees dropped the Australian off his own bowling when he was on 18. With the margins so fine, there was no way Islamabad could afford to make those mistakes.Star of the dayUmar and Fawad played their parts, but it was Watson and Tanvir, with their combined age of 71, that put their side in pole position. Tanvir’s double-wicket maiden at the top was only the start of a near-perfect day from the left-armer, one where he took four wickets and claimed an incredible diving catch. Watson’s consistency with Quetta over the years has been brilliant, and it appears age hasn’t blunted his T20 abilities at all.The big missShadab knows he’s not doing well. He’d acknowledged it during an interview recently. But it took until now for Islamabad to find out how bad the problem is. The 20-year old legspinner was not as consistent in hitting his spots. The googly was often ill-judged and the quicker ones, as is often the case on slow UAE pitches, merely helped the batsmen’s cause. In low-scoring games like this one, Islamabad needed wickets from Pakistan’s star spin bowler. Instead, Shadab went at nine and a half without taking a wicket.Where the teams standQuetta becomes the first team to keep a 100% winning record over multiple games. They top the table with two wins out of two, while Islamabad are second bottom, having won one of three.

Man Utd leading race for Joshua Zirkzee but Bayern Munich have final say

Manchester United are believed to be the front-runners to sign an "extraordinary" attacking player, according to a transfer fresh update.

Man Utd eyeing new striker

Erik ten Hag's side may have secured a massive 3-2 victory at home to Aston Villa on Boxing Day, but there are still clearly issues within the squad that need to be addressed. While Rasmus Hojlund ended his long Premier League drought with the winning goal against Villa, attacking reinforcements are arguably still needed, in order to provide more firepower in the final third.

The fact that Scott McTominay is United's top scorer in the league this season with just five goals speaks volumes about their struggles, with Hojlund, Antony and Marcus Rashford netting just three times between them.

VfB Stuttgart star Serhou Guirassy is one player who has been linked with a January move to Old Trafford, with the Guinean only behind Harry Kane in the Bundesliga scoring charts currently. Meanwhile, Viktor Gyokeres is also seen as a potential target for the Red Devils, with the former Coventry City striker shining at new club Sporting CP.

Man Utd front-runners to sign Joshua Zirkzee

According to a new update from Il Resto del Carlino [via Sport Witness], Manchester United have set their sights on signing Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

A number of top clubs "won't leave" the 22-year-old alone, seeing him as a big player for the future, and the Red Devils appear to be at the front of the queue to snap him up, with the report describing them as "above all".

Bayern Munich do have an option to buy him back, however, having sold him to Bologna, although it remains to be seen if they will trigger that clause. His current club are not keen on entertaining the idea of a January exit, however, so unless United can sway their thinking with a big offer, they may potentially have to wait until next summer.

Zirkzee could be a brilliant addition for Ten Hag if the club can strike a deal for his signature, whether that be next month or at the end of the season, with the youngster a player of enormous potential. He has scored seven goals and registered two assists in 16 Serie A starts this season, while Bologna boss Thiago Motta has heaped praise on him in the past, saying:

"It was an excellent goal from a player with extraordinary qualities. He scored a similar goal in training. Joshua is very talented, but I want to emphasize that he also works very hard for it."

Hojlund isn't yet the finished article, so it is unfair to be expecting him to perform week in, week out, and Zirkzee could be an ideal figure to come in and provide stiff competition for him, paving the way for Anthony Martial to leave next summer in the process.

Man Utd eye swoop for £87m Hojlund rival who could be Zlatan 2.0

Erik ten Hag is keen on reinforcing his striker options this winter.

The Dutchman may only get better as the years pass as well, and having both him and Hojlund in the squad could be a mouthwatering prospect for years to come.

Jonny Bairstow leads England to four-wicket win after bowlers restrict West Indies

Nicholas Pooran’s eye-catching fifty a highlight for home side but England take a 1-0 lead in the series

The Report by Valkerie Baynes05-Mar-2019England 161 for 6 (Bairstow 68, Cottrell 3-29) beat West Indies 160 for 8 (Pooran 58, Curran 4-36) by four wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball commentaryA quick-fire half-century by Jonny Bairstow led England to a comfortable four-wicket victory against West Indies in the opening game of their three-match T20I series in St Lucia. After Nicholas Pooran’s impressive fifty anchored West Indies’ innings in the face of a strong all-round England bowling performance, led by Tom Curran’s 4 for 36, Bairstow charged towards the target of 161 from the outset.West Indies were not helped by some loose bowling and even more costly fielding. They got wickets, too, as Bairstow lost batting partners Alex Hales, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan as well as being dropped twice but he did not even flinch, racing to his fifty off 27 balls and reaching 68 off 40 before lofting Ashley Nurse to Carlos Brathwaite on the midwicket boundary. While the danger wasn’t completely removed for England, Bairstow had set them off to such a strong start that nothing short of a serious collapse would see them beaten.Kent team-mates Joe Denly and Sam Billings all but completed the job with a 50-run partnership for the fifth wicket so that when Jason Holder had Denly caught by Pooran for 30 off 29 balls, England needed just eight runs to win. But there were nervous moments to come when Billings was dropped on Holder’s next ball by Oshane Thomas, whose one-handed attempt at fine leg was a mess. Then Sheldon Cottrell added his third wicket with his first ball back into the attack, bowling Billings for 18.England still only needed seven runs but four byes off Cottrell eased the tension and they reached the target with seven balls to spare.West Indies kept the squad which drew the ODI series 2-2 with England but made two key tweaks to the side that won in St Lucia on Saturday, bringing in Pooran and Fabian Allen for John Campbell and Devendra Bishoo.Shai Hope opened in Campbell’s place alongside Chris Gayle and immediately received a second chance when Adil Rashid dropped a sitter at third man off David Willey in the first over.Fortunately for England, however, Root held on to a leading edge at midwicket off Curran in the next over and Hope was sent packing with West Indies 7 for 1.Surprisingly, with Gayle at the other end, it was Shimron Hetmyer who hit the first six three balls later. But, sure enough, Gayle chimed in with two of his own in the following over and it looked like the slog-fest promised by his 39 sixes in the one-day series would continue in the shorter format. It was not to be, however, and when Gayle fell just a short time later, caught by Rashid at gully off Chris Jordan for just 15 off 12 balls, Pooran’s inclusion became key. After a stuttering start to his international career because of an 18-month layoff after injuring both his legs in a horror car accident in 2015, the 23-year-old Pooran made his ODI debut in the first fixture of the series against England in Barbados last month, scoring a duck, dropping a catch and holding another. But, playing his ninth T20I, he stepped into the void left by Gayle’s dismissal, bringing up his 50 off just 32 deliveries then slapping the next ball for a mammoth 111m six off Curran, which cleared the roof of the stands.Pooran was out three balls later, however, bowled by Curran with a clever delivery that took the top of middle stump for 58 off 37 balls, his highest T20I score.Pooran shared a 64-run partnership with Darren Bravo, who was out to a spectacular piece of fielding by Jordan off his own bowling. Jordan’s slower ball enticed a leading edge from Bravo and the bowler had to change direction on his follow-through to take a diving catch in his outstretched right hand.Jordan was impressive, bowling just three overs to claim 2 for 16, while Rashid was also excellent with 1 for 15 off his four. Denly claimed the handy wicket of Allen off his three overs but the pick of England’s bowlers was Curran with all of his wickets being dangerous batsmen in Hope, Hetmyer, Pooran and Jason Holder.

Leeds United’s “lively” player also ruled out, team news vs Middlesbrough

Leeds United have been dealt a blow after learning that one of their top young players is also ruled out of this afternoon’s Championship game vs Middlesbrough alongside Junior Firpo.

Leeds injury news

The Whites currently have Stuart Dallas out on the sidelines with his own respective long-term problem as it stands, so the rest of the squad will have to try and pick up positive results throughout the rest of the season without the services of their veteran.

Daniel Farke’s side host Michael Carrick’s visitors later today, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm UK time, but following a fresh update, the manager is set to be missing another one of his stars having suffered a fresh blow.

Predicted Leeds lineup to face Middlesbrough including Spence and no "crucial" titan

The possible line up that Daniel Farke could select to line up at Elland Road this weekend.

Dec 1, 2023

Elland Road striker Joe Gelhardt has recently been absent from the action having sustained a hand fracture, and despite having since returned to training, he’s now expected to be facing another spell in the treatment room.

England’s former youth international spent the second half of last season out on loan at Sunderland, and whilst the 21-year-old has stayed to try and fight for his place at the club rather than taking the opportunity to leave over the summer, he’ll have to wait to make his next appearance.

Joe Gelhardt set to miss Middlesbrough

Taking to X, The Athletic’s Phil Hay shared an update from Farke’s pre-match press conference on Friday where the boss confirmed that Gelhardt is ruled out of today’s encounter vs Middlesbrough.

Daniel Farke is here for his pre-Boro presser. Injury latest: Gelhardt out with a hip problem, Firpo out with a hamstring strain. Firpo likely to be out for three weeks. Those are the only new concerns after Wednesday's win over Swansea.”

Leeds United strikerJoe Gelhardt.

Leeds suffer setback over "lively" Gelhardt

Whilst Gelhardt has only made five appearances this season in the Championship, Leeds will know that he’s capable of performing at a high level, therefore, the fact that he won’t be available for this particular fixture at the very least will come as a blow to Farke.

The Liverpool-born talent has posted 46 contributions, 32 goals and 16 assists, in 125 outings since the start of his career, showing how prolific he can be in the final third when handed the opportunity to play on a regular basis (Transfermarkt – Gelhardt statistics).

The Whites’ left-footed ace also ranks in the 96th percentile for pass completion, so he has extremely strong link-up play with his fellow teammates in and around the opposition’s penalty area (FBRef – Gelhardt statistics).

Gelhardt, who has been hailed “lively” by journalist Josh Bunting, is even a versatile operator having been deployed in five different positions over the pitch following his arrival on the professional scene, including everywhere across the frontline and as an attacking midfielder, so the sooner he is able to return to the action, the better.

Sunderland could give Clarke new role by signing "magic" Dack replacement

Sunderland picked up a massive victory against Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Boxing Day to overtake the Tigers in the final playoff place, while putting the ghosts of last Saturday's humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Coventry City behind them from Michael Beale's debut in the dugout.

Ever the hero this season, Jack Clarke scored the only goal of the game to clinch all three points for his side, putting him on 11 goals in the Championship this term.

The Black Cats' goalscoring burden has been placed heavily on the 23-year-old's shoulders this season but Beale could alleviate this pressure on Clarke by signing one former player in January.

Sunderland transfer news – Amad Diallo

Over Christmas, Football Insider reported that Manchester United are willing to let Amad Diallo head back out on loan in January, having not played a single minute all season for the Red Devils. Reports have also claimed that Sunderland are keen to acquire the Ivorian attacker once more after such a successful spell in England's second tier last season.

Amad Diallo for Sunderland

Diallo has spent the majority of the campaign sidelined through a serious knee injury which he sustained on pre-season with the English giants. As a result, the youngster is yet to feature under head coach Erik ten Hag in a competitive game this term, although the £9m-rated forward has recently returned to training.

It was recently revealed that the Atalanta youth product was keen to stay at Old Trafford to fight for his place but now it seems as though the decision may be taken out of his hands and a return to the Stadium of Light could be just what the doctor ordered for all parties.

Amad Diallo's stats – 2022/23

Diallo joined Sunderland at the beginning of the previous campaign on a season-long loan spell and quickly became a hero on Wearside. The Ivory Coast international ended the season as Sunderland's top goalscorer in all competitions with 14 goals as Tony Mowbray's side made an unprecedented finish inside the playoff places, unfortunately losing to Luton Town in the semi-finals. Mowbray even described Diallo as "magic" as the loanee finished joint-eight in the league's scoring charts.

Nevertheless, the difference between Sunderland over the past two seasons is that the club are far more reliant on one player this term compared to the last campaign. The Black Cats have found the net 33 times this season in the Championship. However, this time around, only 11 teams have scored fewer goals. Additionally, Jack Clarke has bagged 33.3% of the side's league goals this season.

In the 2022/23 campaign, Sunderland had three players reach ten or more goals in all competitions: Diallo, Ross Stewart and Clarke, while Ellis Simms followed closely behind with seven. Now, the side's second-highest goalscorer spot is shared between Dan Neil and Jobe Bellingham on four apiece.

The main issue Beale has to fix is the team's lack of potency up top. Nazariy Rusyn, Hemir Semedo, Mason Burstow, Jewison Bennette, and Eliezer Mayenda have all rotated the number '9' position at different times in the season but none have managed to convert a single opportunity, leaving the manager to get creative up top.

On Boxing Day, Beale threw Bradley Dack up top but the ex-Blackburn Rovers star failed to have any impact at all, recording just one shot which registered a measly xG of 0.07 before he was replaced in the 44th minute with an injury. Chronicle Live handed the 29-year-old a 6/10 match rating for his display.

Nevertheless, with a potential arrival of Diallo, Beale could try Clarke up front given how potent he has been for Sunderland this term. The former Tottenham Hotspur man has only started four times up front and has a decent record when leading the line.

In addition, the new manager could put Diallo out on the wing in Clarke's position to alleviate the loss of the Englishman on the flanks. While Sunderland may lose some aerial threat, the side will have a much better balance in the forward line and won't be as reliant on Clarke's goals with the addition of Diallo.

Wolves keen to sign "top defender" for O’Neil; club can meet his value

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made an impressive start to life under Gary O'Neil and could now enter the market in January for a high-profile defender.

Wolves 1-0 Burnley

On Tuesday evening, Wolves secured a vital 1-0 victory over Burnley at Molineux, with a solitary strike from Hwang Hee-chan proving to be the difference between the sides as the West Midlands-based outfit moved on to 18 points from their first 15 matches played in the Premier League this campaign. O'Neil hailed his side's "massive" victory over the Clarets in his post-match press conference, saying:

"It’s a massive win for us. I’ve watched a lot of Burnley, they’re very well organised and every team I’ve watched against them has struggled to progress up the pitch with the ball."

"Burnley are a good side. It’s maybe disrespectful to say ‘job done’, because they won the Championship by some way and were big spenders in the summer. They (Burnley) have every right to be competitive at this level and no Premier League game is easy, so I’m really pleased. It’s a big win."

Wolves could sign a "monster" £25m Dawson upgrade

This £25m “monster” could be the perfect replacement for Craig Dawson at Wolves.

ByAdam Scully Dec 3, 2023

Generating momentum will be key for Wolves if they have designs on breaking into the top half of the league standings over the coming weeks and they will hope to record successive home victories on Saturday when Steve Cooper's struggling Nottingham Forest side will make the trip to Molineux in an all-Midlands clash. Looking ahead to January, though, Wolves have now reportedly put their hat in the ring to sign a World Cup winner as O'Neil looks to bring in reinforcements.

Wolves eyeing Marcos Acuna move

According to reports in Spain, Wolves are interested in a swoop for Sevilla left-back Marcos Acuna, who is under contract at the La Liga outfit until the summer of 2025. The outlet claim that the Argentina international is valued at around €12 million by his current employers, which is a fee the Old Gold can pay for his services.

Despite this, the Zapala-born man is an important presence at Sevilla so it may not be easy for Wolves to prize him away from his present environment, making the situation one to watch out for further developments in over the next few months.

Sevilla defenderMarcos Acuna.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola labelled Acuna as a "top defender" earlier this year following the Citizens' UEFA Super Cup victory against Sevilla on penalties, which is praise that can be backed up by the fact the 32-year-old has won 1.5 successful challenges per match in La Liga this term (Acuna statistics – WhoScored).

With Jonny Otto's uncertain future at Molineux leaving Wolves light in the full-back areas, bringing Acuna to the West Midlands in January could be a shrewd bit of business from O'Neil as he looks to bolster his defensive ranks, making this one to keep an eye on.

USWNT legend Carli Lloyd announces first pregnancy aged 41 after 'indescribable roller coaster' with IVF

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Lloyd announced Wednesday that she and her husband Brian Hollins are expecting their first child after several rounds of IVF. Lloyd has explained that conceiving took nearly two years and she has posted a heartfelt Instagram message in which she has offered support to those who are still struggling to get pregnant.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lloyd is one of the most decorated female players of all time. A former USWNT international who also played for the likes of NJ/NY Gotham City, Manchester City, and Houston Dash, she won 316 caps for her country, winning the World Cup twice, as well as two Olympic gold medals.

    WHAT LLOYD SAID

Lloyd has written an essay for Women's Health Magazine detailing her struggle, saying: “I felt all the emotions during my career — stress, worry, fear, anxiety — but I’d never felt all the emotions that IVF brought on. I felt completely out of control. It’s an indescribable roller coaster unless you go through it."

She added: “When I look back at all the things I went through on the soccer field — whether it was a poor performance, getting benched, or missing a penalty kick in a World Cup final — there was always something I felt I could do to control the situation. I would go out and work 10 times harder. I was incredibly focused during my career. The majority of the time, the world saw me in competitor mode. A machine. I was often emotionless and numb because that’s the only way I felt I was able to survive and thrive.

“But this situation hit me so differently. I wasn’t emotionless or numb. Some nights I would lie in bed crying uncontrollably to Brian. I cried and worried a lot. I leaned on Brian more than I ever had, as well as on my family and friends. For the first time in my life, I needed their support to keep going.”

She continued: “I went from feeling embarrassed, ashamed, and afraid to tell people that I was going through IVF to now wanting to share my story to help others. In times of struggle, we see what we are made of. We grow. We learn. And most important, we have more appreciation for the things we do have in life.”
