14 Players Who Have Played For Both Aston Villa And West Ham

Claret and blue is one of the most famous colour combinations in all of English football, and Aston Villa & West Ham United are perhaps the two clubs most synonymous with these colours.

Both sides have enjoyed huge successes over the years and a number of players have played for both Villa and the Irons.

Here is Football FanCast's list detailing some of the best players to play for both of these teams in the Premier League era.

John Carew (Aston Villa 2007-2011; West Ham United 2011-2012)

English football fans will remember John Carew best for his time with Aston Villa, but he did have a season at the Boleyn Ground as well.

Carew joined Aston Villa in January 2007 as part of a swap deal with French side Lyon, with Milan Baros being the man to go the other way.

The Norway international reached double figures for league goals on three occasions with Villa, his highest tally being 13 from 32 appearances in the 2007/08 season.

Carew may have failed to make a long-lasting impact on the West Ham faithful but he is certainly a hero of yesteryear at Villa Park.

Carlton Cole (Aston Villa 2004-2005; West Ham United 2006-2015)

If you want a striker that is loved by all West Ham fans, look no further than Carlton Cole.

Cole scored 40 times in the Premier League for the Hammers, on top of an additional 14 during their time in the Championship.

One of his most famous goals for West Ham came at Wembley Stadium, giving them the lead in the play-off final against Blackpool. A young Tom Ince struck back before Ricardo Vaz Te wrote himself into club folklore with the winner.

Prior to arriving in east London in 2006, Cole had a loan spell at Villa from Chelsea, where he made 27 league appearances, scoring three times.

Joe Cole (West Ham United 1998-2003, 2013-2014; Aston Villa 2014-2016)

Next up is Carlton’s namesake Joe Cole, another attacking player that the West Ham fans will have fond memories of.

Cole scored that superb goal against Sweden in an England shirt at the 2006 World Cup and also won three Premier League titles in Chelsea blue. Before that, though, he played for his beloved West Ham just like Frank Lampard did.

The 41-year-old was named Hammer of the Year in 2002/03, a campaign which saw him play all but two top-flight games, scoring four times. However, he was unable to help steer the Hammers clear of relegation. Cole also scored in a 3-2 FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest that season.

Joe Cole returned to Upton Park a decade after he first left, and after one season there, joined Villa in 2014 in what was a relatively unsuccessful spell for all concerned.

James Collins (West Ham United 2005-2009, 2012-2018; Aston Villa 2009-2012)

Welsh defender James Collins was with West Ham for a long while, though he spent three years at Aston Villa while the Hammers were relegated and promoted back to the Premier League.

He first broke through into professional football as a Cardiff City player, with his first transfer taking him to the English capital.

Collins wasn’t used as regularly as he may have liked, and so, with the 2009/10 season already underway, he jumped ship to the other team in claret and blue.

The centre-back made nearly double the number of appearances for West Ham as he did for Villa, and so is better known for playing for the former. His second spell with Villa isn't one many will recall due to the fact that he only signed a short contract and then got injured almost immediately.

Rachel Daly (West Ham United 2020; Aston Villa 2022-present)

Moving over to the Women’s Super League, where Aston Villa fans must have been on cloud nine watching Rachel Daly last season.

The striker arrived from NWSL side Houston Dash and picked up the Golden Boot having taken up a centre-forward slot for Carla Ward's side. Daly’s 22 goals were rivalled closely by Khadija Shaw of Manchester City, but it was the England star that prevailed.

Daly had been playing her club football in the US for the best part of a decade when she arrived on loan at West Ham in 2020, so fans this side of the pond weren’t used to watching her in action regularly.

Four goal contributions in less than 800 minutes represented a very solid stint in east London, but West Ham didn’t make the move permanent and it was in Birmingham where the European Championship winner truly came to the fore.

Stewart Downing (Aston Villa 2009-2011; West Ham United 2013-2015)

Stewart Downing played over 400 times for Middlesbrough and is a club legend there, as well as representing both halves of this claret and blue duo.

Aston Villa came first for Downing, making the move in 2009 from Boro following their relegation. He was always a player with a bright creative spark that could also find the back of the net himself, and that shone through during his time Villa Park.

Downing’s 11 goals and 13 assists for them is slightly better than his record of seven and 11 respectively for West Ham, with both of these returns coming in 79 outings, remarkably enough.

Marlon Harewood (West Ham United 2003-2007; Aston Villa 2007-2010)

Marlon Harewood played for a number of different clubs but only made more appearances than in his West Ham tenure with Nottingham Forest. The City Ground was his home as a youngster and made the move south to London in his mid-20s.

Alan Pardew was the man to sign Harewood for the Hammers, and he had an instant impact, scoring 17 and assisting 11 on the way to play-off promotion out of the Championship.

Harewood’s form continued up front in the top flight, including a hat-trick against who else but Aston Villa.

After four years with West Ham, the forward joined the West Midlanders but was unable to replicate his form in front of goal. Harewood scored five league goals in the 2007/08 season before spending the majority of 2009 on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United.

Thomas Hitzlsperger (Aston Villa 2001-2005; West Ham United 2010-2011)

After playing youth football in his home country of Germany, Thomas Hitzlsperger joined Aston Villa.

His professional debut came at Villa Park against Liverpool, and following a loan spell with Chesterfield, he was deemed ready to be a regular. Hitzlsperger made over 100 appearances in a Villa shirt, including 10 in the EFL Cup, scoring four goals in that tournament alone.

He left Villa for Stuttgart where he received a lot of praise from the powers that be in Germany in the form of 52 international caps.

The midfielder from Munich spent a single season at West Ham between 2010 and 2011 and was unable to make a notable impact, in truth.

Danny Ings (Aston Villa 2021-2023; West Ham United 2023-present)

Danny Ings is still a West Ham player currently and the jury is still out on him from the London Stadium faithful.

His injury issues have continued over from earlier in his career and the feisty striker has been unable to provide capable support to Michail Antonio, let alone challenge him for a starting spot under David Moyes.

Ings joined West Ham from Aston Villa, and it was definitely the latter club who got the better end of the deal.

He contributed to 22 goals in 52 Villa appearances and then the club from Birmingham secured an eight-figure fee for his services, recouping most of their outlay for him when signing from Southampton in 2021.

David James (Aston Villa 1999-2001; West Ham United 2001-2004)

At the other end of the field, David James also played for both of these clubs, with a mixture of fortunes.

Injuries and relegation struck during his time with West Ham, so Aston Villa perhaps chose the perfect time to sell once again.

James, who earned 53 caps for England, made a combined 186 appearances for these two teams, which is a decent tally no matter what.

Liverpool and Portsmouth were probably his more famous clubs, however, while it has to be said that he was prone to an error here and there.

Marcus Rashford's Man Utd team-mates felt 'let down' by tequila-fuelled Belfast trip with forward losing senior status in dressing room as a result

Marcus Rashford's decision to party in Belfast until the early hours of the morning reportedly "let down" several of his Manchester United team-mates.

  • Reports that Ten Hag relationship broken
  • Latest information suggests team-mates also "let down"
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The England international embarked on a tequila-fuelled session in a Belfast club back in January, missing United training and their FA Cup fourth round clash against Newport as a result. Despite immediately reinstating Rashford – to great effect against Wolves – previous reports have suggested that Erik ten Hag's relationship with the player has become irreconcilable. According to the , that sentiment has spread to the players.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The notes that certain members of the United dressing room feel "let down" by Rashford's actions. That's despite the 26-year-old releasing a 2,000-word statement last week underlining his commitment to the Red Devils. But according to the , Rashford's previous status as a senior member of the United dressing room has been hit, with his reputation tarnished as a result of that unceremonious trip to Belfast.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Rashford did his talking on the pitch in his first game back against Wolves but has put in several below-par performances since. The United forward has struggled in a more central role, in the absence of Rasmus Hojlund, but bounced back with a screamer in the Manchester derby. More of that and he will likely regain the support of his team-mates in no time.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

He may, however, struggle to properly rebuild his relationship with Ten Hag, with whom he is reportedly not even on speaking terms with at this stage. That said, Rashford may well outlive his manager given that recent results have piled the pressure even further on the Dutchman, with several names mooted to replace him.

Spurs: Tottenham ahead of Chelsea for £52m forward, he dreams of a move

Tottenham Hotspur have a distinct advantage over London rivals Chelsea in the race to sign a £52 million forward, according to reports this week.

Who could Spurs sign in January?

The north Londoners made seven major signings over the summer transfer window, with the likes of Micky van de Ven and James Maddison in particular going on to dazzle under new manager Ange Postecoglou. The duo are now mainstays of Tottenham's table-topping eleven. Van de Ven has formed an excellent partnership with Cristian Romero in central defence, while Maddison has scored two goals and assisted five others in the league alone.

Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle has raved over Maddison's form this season, telling Premier League productions that the Englishman could be about to hit his peak in these next few years.

“I always rated him,” said Hoddle. “I felt Tottenham three years should have gone and got him with Harry (Kane) in the team. I always felt that he was ahead of players who were getting ahead of him in the England squad when he was at Leicester. With better players around him, and certainly in that England team, I think you would see the best and that’s coming out of him now. He has matured."

However, reports in the last few weeks have claimed that Spurs have a few positions they wish to strengthen in the January window. Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson, Juventus star Gleison Bremer, Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba are all reported defensive targets as Postecoglou eyes solid back up for van de Ven and Romero. Tottenham only have Eric Dier to fall back on, something which could cause trouble if either of the pair were to be sidelined.

Meanwhile, a possible exit for midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, as has been reported, could mean that Spurs move to sign a replacement with one of the candidates being Chelsea star Conor Gallagher.

Tottenham transfer news – Marcus Edwards

Another player who's been linked with a move to north London is an ex-Spurs prodigy, with a report from Portugal providing the latest update on Marcus Edwards. Record, as translated and shared by Sport Witness, state both Tottenham and Chelsea are targeting the player who has a £52 million release clause, though his club, Sporting Lisbon, plan to raise it around £69m with a new contract.

The winger seems fairly keen on it, but he also has a "dream" of returning to England and playing his football in the Premier League. Both Spurs and Chelsea are possible landing spots, though Postecoglou's side have a distinct advantage in that they are due 25% of any future transfer for Edwards – who Owen Hargreaves called "fantastic". This is due to a sell-on clause in the Englishman's contract, meaning they'd pay far less than Chelsea would for his signing.

Speaking to the media back in 2016, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, now in charge of Chelsea, revealed his admiration for Edwards, saying:

"He is a very good prospect and, potentially, he can be a top player but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player, but now it’s how he builds his future – that’s very important."

Blow for Kompany: "Fantastic" Burnley player injured

Burnley look set to be without a “fantastic” player for their trip to Newcastle United on Saturday, with Vincent Kompany’s injury issues going from bad to worse.

What’s the latest Burnley injury news?

The Clarets are yet to pick up a Premier League victory so far this season and sit in the bottom three as a result. The club have had a tough run of opening fixtures, though, losing to Manchester City, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United and picking up a point at Nottingham Forest.

It doesn’t get any easier for Burnley, though, with a trip to St James’ Park to take on Eddie Howe’s side tomorrow afternoon. A number of players have been sidelined in recent weeks at Turf Moor and will not feature, including Hjalmar Ekdal, Darko Churlinov, Nathan Redmond and Michael Obafemi, whereas Lyle Foster has been suspended.

Manuel Benson looks set to join them on the treatment table after being subbed off early on in the midweek EFL Cup win at Salford City due to an ankle problem. Speaking ahead of the game this weekend, relayed by The Burnley Express, Kompany said Benson is set to miss out this weekend but is hopeful his issue will “heal fairly quickly”.

“It’s not bad, bad news but in the short term it has an impact on the squad for the weekend. It was a serious knock, so it’s a bit of both. But it’s nothing dramatic, so hopefully he will heal fairly quickly. With the international break, that probably comes at a good time actually.”

Manuel Benson

How good is Manuel Benson?

Benson starred during his first season in England last year, playing a key role in the Championship-winning campaign with 15 goal contributions.

He was hailed as “fantastic” by Kompany as a result, who said after he scored last season: “He’s got to score five in a row. It’s not a coincidence; it’s a skill he’s got.

“It’s the same as a striker being able to peel off to the back post and head it in. I can’t be handing solutions of how to deal with him, but it’s just the things he’s been doing since he was a kid. “I’m still pushing him for tap ins- I want tap ins.

“In the end it’s something he’s comfortable doing and he will get goals that way. What he’s done for us is fantastic and from our side, that’s all we want. He’s doing well and we’re pushing him to keep doing well and I'm very happy to have him with us.”

However, in 2023/24, it has so far been a struggle for Benson, who was making just his second start of the season in the week.

The winger has played just over 90 minutes of football in all competitions and could now be missing for a short period of time. If he doesn’t return until after the international break, something Kompany has hinted, then Benson would also miss games against Luton Town and Chelsea, where hopefully, the Clarets will pick up their first league victory of the campaign.

Miles Hammond (51) and Gareth Roderick (67) were the other main contributors.Chris Rushworth and Ben Stokes each claimed three of the wickets, Stokes beginning with a seven-over spell that brought him 2 for 10. He ended the day with three for 40 from an impressive 18.4 overs, while Rushworth had three for 82 off 20.

Reece Topley ruled out for season with recurrence of stress fracture

New blow ends realistic hopes of World Cup recall, and raises questions about fast bowler’s future

Reece Topley’s Lions form is promising for Hampshire•Getty Images

Reece Topley has been ruled out of the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a recurrence of a stress fracture in the lower back.Only days after it emerged he had come close to a recall to the England limited-overs squad – the selectors considered him (and Yorkshire’s Matt Fisher) as a replacement for the injured Tom Curran in the T20I squad facing India – the 24-year-old Topley experienced pain in his back while bowling for England Lions on Monday and was sent for a scan. The results show the fracture that he suffered last year has returned. He will see surgeons next week and is expected to undergo an operation shortly afterwards where a titanium pin will be inserted to strengthen the spine. From a personal perspective, the news is catastrophic for Topley. Aged 24, his highly promising career has been plagued by back injuries. Having worked long and hard to come back from the last setback, this new blow not only ends any realistic hopes of earning a recall to the England squad ahead of the World Cup campaign, but raises questions about his future in the game.It is his fifth stress fracture – all in L3 and L4 lumbar vertebra – in six seasons as a professional cricketer. Out of contract at Hampshire at the end of the season, clubs are likely to prove highly cautious over future contract offers.Topley is the third bowler on the fringes of the England squads – Toby Roland-Jones and Mason Crane are the others – to have suffered a recurrence of a stress fracture this season. That’s a situation which is bound to prompt some reflection on the treatment of such injuries at the ECB. Both Roland-Jones and Topley also spent time on the ECB’s recently discontinued pace programme. The news realistically ends a relationship between Hampshire and Topley that never really took off as expected. Signed amid great hope and competition, he managed only three Championship matches in three years and was disappointed to be left out of the side playing in the Royal London Final at Lord’s on Saturday. He impressed the England management as recently as last week, however, in bowling with pace and skill in a Lions match at Northampton – he claimed 4 for 16 – and revived hopes he could add to his tally of 10 ODI and six T20I caps.

Everton flop sold in 2023 is now outscoring Beto & Ndiaye combined

David Moyes has enjoyed a sensational return to life at Goodison Park since he agreed to join Everton for a second spell to replace Sean Dyche in January.

The Scottish manager, who was let go by West Ham United at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, has won four, drawn one, and lost one, of his opening six matches in charge of the Toffees so far.

James Tarkowski’s last-gasp screamer in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park earlier this month has, arguably, been the highlight of Moyes’ second tenure to date, and it will be hard to beat.

The former Manchester United boss has racked up 13 points from his first six games and that is significantly better than what Dyche managed when he first arrived at Goodison.

As you can see in the results above, the former Burnley gaffer only racked up seven points in his first six games in charge of the Toffees, with three losses in those six games.

Another thing that Moyes already has over Dyche is that he has managed to get a tune out of Portuguese centre-forward Beto, who has been on fire in recent weeks.

Everton's top goalscorers this season

The former Udinese number nine had only scored one goal in 12 appearances in the Premier League under the former Everton manager in the first-half of the season, after a return of just three goals in 30 league outings in the 2023/24 campaign.

However, Beto has propelled himself to being the second-top scorer for Everton in the top-flight this season with an exceptional haul of four goals in his last three outings in the division.

The 27-year-old marksman struck twice in the 4-0 win over Leicester, opened the scoring against Liverpool in the derby, and netted the opener against Crystal Palace in a 2-1 win last time out.

As you can see in the table above, his recent burst of goals has taken him up to second in the standings and only behind Ndiaye, who has an impressive return of six goals from 4.22 xG.

Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin almost has as much xG as Ndiaye and Beto combined and, yet, has only scored three goals in the Premier League this season.

Everton's DominicCalvert-Lewincelebrates scoring their first goal

On the topic of strikers, though, there is a former Everton star – Moise Kean – who is now outscoring all three of the current Toffees forwards combined, almost two years on from when the club ruthlessly sold him.

Why Everton sold Moise Kean

The Italy international was initially snapped up by Everton from Juventus in the summer of 2019 for a reported fee of £29m, which could have soared to £37m with add-ons, under Marco Silva.

Unfortunately, the young marksman failed to hit the ground running at Goodison Park and only started six of his 29 Premier League appearances during the 2019/20 campaign, scoring two goals and providing two assists in that time.

He was then sent out on loan to Paris Saint-Germain for the 2020/21 and the Italian ace caught the eye with a return of 19 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions.

Kean returned to Everton and played twice under Rafa Benitez at the start of the 2021/22 campaign before being sent to Juventus on a two-season loan deal that summer, with an obligation to make the deal permanent.

His move to the Old Lady on a permanent basis was confirmed in March 2023 for a reported fee of £25m, after he had scored 11 Serie A goals and had been described as “useless” by journalist Tancredi Palmeri after the 2022 Supercoppa Italiana final against Inter.

Where Are They Now

The Italy international then endured a torrid 2023/24 season with the Serie A giants, as he failed to score in 19 appearances and eight starts, and joined Fiorentina in the summer of 2024.

Moise Kean's stunning form this season

The 24-year-old star has hit his stride in the Serie A since his move to Florence last year, as he has proven that he does have the ability to find the back of the net on a consistent basis in a major European league.

After a return of just 11 goals in three seasons with Juventus, after initially leaving Everton on loan in 2021, Kean has already scored 15 league goals for Fiorentina in the current campaign.

The right-footed sensation has outscored Calvert-Lewin, Beto, and Ndiaye combined (14) at league level this season with his 15 strikes, and has done so in an efficient manner.

Kean, who has struck 19 times in all competitions, has scored 15 times from 12.77 xG and only missed nine ‘big chances’ in the Serie A so far this term, which shows that he has been ruthless in front of goal for the Italian side.

As you can see in the table above, the former Everton flop ranks incredibly highly among forwards in the division in a host of key goalscoring metrics, which illustrates just how well he has performed this season.

The Toffees may, now, regret their decision to completely cut ties with the young centre-forward back in 2021, when they sent him out on loan with an obligation for Juventus to buy him, because he has gone on to develop into a fantastic striker and one who is significantly outperforming all of Moyes’ current options.

Everton could see some exciting academy talents come through with Moyes back in the dugout.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 19, 2025

Of course, that is with the benefit of hindsight and Kean did struggle at Juventus in the last three seasons before his move to Fiorentina, so there is no guarantee that he would have found his best form if he remained at Goodison Park.
