Liverpool Join Race To Sign £25k-p/w Midfielder For Klopp

Liverpool have joined the race to bring Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia to Anfield this summer, according to reports.

What's the latest on Lavia's future?

The Reds have Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all out of contract at the end of the season, and with it having been revealed that Arthur Melo will be returning to Juventus, Jurgen Klopp will need to enter the market to secure at least a couple of new central signings ahead of the 2023/24 term.

The Merseyside outfit have already been linked with several potential candidates to add to their midfield including Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham and Chelsea's Mason Mount, but the latest name to have entered the fold is that of the 19-year-old from Southampton.

The Belgium international only made the move to the St Mary's Stadium in July from Premier League rivals Manchester City and his contract isn't set to expire until 2027, but Ruben Selles' best-performing midfielder aside from James Ward-Prowse after just 25 appearances (as per WhoScored), he has been identified as a possible alternative to the more high-profile targets mentioned above.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool have "entered the race" to sign Lavia and are "keen" to bring him to Anfield during the upcoming transfer window as they look to complete an "overhaul" of their midfield.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and City are also reported to be working on a deal, with the latter having included a £40m buy-back clause in the terms of his contract when selling their starlet to the Saints, but as a result of that not becoming active until next year, the door has been opened for other potential suitors to make their move beforehand.

Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

Would Lavia be a good signing for Liverpool?

Lavia might not be as much of a household name as a lot of Liverpool's other targets, but he's been dubbed a midfield "monster" by Southampton reporter Benjy Nurick and could be a much cheaper quality option to pursue.

The Adidas-sponsored star is naturally a defensive midfielder and loves to get stuck in, as shown in him currently averaging two tackles per top-flight game (only two Southampton players can boast more), whilst ranking in the 89th percentile for most blocks.

Elsewhere, the £25k-p/w talent has the ability to operate slightly higher up in central midfield alongside sitting just in front of the back four, which will surely tick another box for Klopp or any other interested party.

Whether Liverpool's struggles this term will affect their chances of landing Lavia remains to be seen, but given they already seem to have a fight on their hands, you could argue that the odds are not in the Reds' favour.

Chelsea Willing To Let "Outstanding" £50k-p/w Star Leave

Chelsea will look to sell midfielder Conor Gallagher in the summer transfer window, in order to comply with Financial Fair Play guidelines, according to a recent report from The Daily Mail.

Which Chelsea players are leaving?

The future of Mason Mount has been in doubt for quite some time, amid interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool, however journalist Simon Phillips has claimed Chelsea now feel "more optimistic" about the central midfielder penning a new deal.

N'Golo Kante's contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and while talks were said to be entering their final stages a few weeks ago, the Frenchman is yet to put pen to paper on what is expected to be a new two-year deal.

One player the Blues are determined to get rid of is striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with reports from Spain detailing they want him out at all costs, amid interest from the likes of Inter Milan and Barcelona.

It is likely to have been a far more difficult decision to let Gallagher go, however The Daily Mail now report the midfielder will be sold at the end of the season, in order to balance the books at Stamford Bridge. Todd Boehly spending over £600m since his arrival means that departures will be needed in the summer, and the Cobham academy graduate appears likely to leave.

Borussia Dortmund headline the interest from abroad, while there is also the possibility the 23-year-old remains in the Premier League, amid interest from Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Should Chelsea let Gallagher leave?

It is always disappointing when players from the academy don't quite make the grade, but it is probably a wise decision to allow the Englishman to leave this summer, as he has not developed in the way Chelsea would have liked this season.

In 28 Premier League games, the £50k-per-week midfielder has recorded just two goals and registered one assist, failing to reach the heights he did on loan at Crystal Palace, where he scored eight goals in the 2021-22 season.

The Blues strengthened considerably in central midfield back in January, signing Enzo Fernandez for a British-record £106.8m fee, and with Mount now looking more likely to stay, there is set to be stiff competition for a starting spot next season.

Chelsea should look to cash-in on Gallagher at the end of the season, and use the money to sign a new striker, as their attacking output has been a major problem this season.

Daniel Levy Slammed As 48 y/o Struggles At Spurs

Talksport pundit Jamie O'Hara has slammed Daniel Levy for handing Cristian Stellini the Tottenham Hotspur interim manager role for the rest of the season.

What's the latest on Cristian Stellini and Spurs?

Three months before his contract came to an end, former boss Antonio Conte agreed with Spurs it was best he left by mutual consent.

In his absence, his 48-year-old assistant manager Stellini was asked to take charge of the club until the summer, with Ryan Mason stepping up as assistant head coach.

Since then, the club haven't exactly picked up much of a new manager bounce. Indeed, the new boss has one once, drawn once, and lost once in the three Premier League games since taking over.

That loss came at home against Bournemouth on the weekend, as Tottenham shipped a late goal to lose 3-2 – which could have catastrophic consequences in their pursuit of a top-four finish.

While speaking about Stellini on Talksport, O'Hara claimed he is no different than Conte, and doesn't have a clue.

However, he laid the blame on Daniel Levy for handing the reins to the Italian, saying (0:19): “Stellini, I don't know what this guy's doing. I don't know what he keeps seeing and what he's coming out and saying, he hasn't got a clue.

"All he is is Antonio Conte’s right-hand man. He's doing exactly what Antonio Conte did, the same players, the same tactics, the same old rubbish.

“I don't know what we were thinking, thinking this was going to be a good idea until the end of the season.

"And it just sums it up. Daniel Levy, again, lets the fans down. There's an opportunity to get top four, and we've thrown it away. Absolutely thrown it away.

"Because, you know, we're just Mickey Mouse when it comes to making the right decisions.”

Why haven't Spurs hired a new manager?

After that loss on Saturday, Spurs now sit fifth in the league, three points behind Newcastle United with just seven games to go.

Worryingly, seventh-placed Brighton have two games in hand on Tottenham and are just four points behind the north London outfit.

At the time, there was some surprise in the media that Stellini had remained why Conte had left. Indeed, journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke said: “Well, it's very unusual, isn't it? Off the top of my head. I can't think of any other examples of a manager leaving and his two assistants stay in place."

antonio-conte-tottenham-hotspur

Levy, however, evidently didn't feel as though there was a better immediate option from outside the club to either come in as interim or full-time manager.

The chairman clearly wants to take his time before appointing Conte's replacement but if Spurs drop out of the top four, his plan could backfire.

Rangers Could Sign £4.5m Star To Form Scary Duo

Glasgow Rangers look like they are already preparing for life without Ryan Kent as they have recently scouted winger Luis Palma.

Kent’s contract expires at the end of the season and with nothing confirmed regarding an extension, the Englishman could well leave the Ibrox side for free, which would represent a major blow for Michael Beale.

It was revealed last week that the Light Blues were keen on Palma, and they had sent scouts to oversee his performance for Aris against Olympiacos and the club have monitored him all season.

According to the Daily Record, he could cost £4.5m and the Glasgow side are facing competition from Anderlecht for his signature in what could be an interesting few weeks ahead.

Beale will need to strengthen his attacking options, and although he will surely be backed in the transfer window, the 42-year-old won’t have vast sums to work with and therefore will have to be smart with his decisions.

Could Rangers sign Luis Palma?

With regular European football and a chance to win trophies on a regular basis, the Gers have everything in place to entice the winger to Scotland, and he is within their budget.

The Honduran has been in wonderful form this term for Aris, scoring ten goals and registering six assists, while his positional versatility could also give him an advantage, being able to operate across the front three if required.

The winger could create a rater menacing attacking duo with striker Antonio Colak, who could thrive with Palma setting him up on a regular basis.

The Croatian hitman has settled fairly well at Rangers, scoring 17 goals, yet he has often looked like an isolated figure, leading the line on his own.

Under Beale, this has become less and less of a problem, however with Kent not exactly enjoying his best season – scoring just three times – and seven-goal Fashion Sakala either hit or miss, a player in the mould of Palma could work wonders for him.

Palma delivers 0.9 crosses per game along with averaging 1.3 key passes and Colak could be on the receiving end of these, waiting in the penalty box and utilising his excellent finishing skills.

Antonio Colak for Rangers

The 23-year-old does play slightly deeper according to his heatmap from this season via Sofascore, looking to play passes inside which could suggest that dribbling is not his strong suit, which is evidenced by completing just 43% of his attempted take-ons this term.

This may not be a bad thing, with Colak performing best when able to link up well with someone, and even he could drop deeper to take the ball and try and make things happen, making him less isolated in the process.

Signing Palma may cost Rangers a significant amount, yet it could be a fantastic investment for the future.

Boehly Could Restore Chelsea With ‘Genius’ Appointment

It seems clear that whoever takes over at Chelsea in the summer has a huge job on their hands if they are going to transform the Blues back into challengers at the top of the Premier League.

The decision to appoint Frank Lampard as an interim manager has certainly not paid off after four defeats from four, which has left the west London outfit languishing in 11th position in the top flight, with no trophies to compete for.

The millions spent by Todd Boehly has not produced the expected results, while his gamble on Graham Potter did not pay off, which has left the American with a significant decision to make in the summer if he wants to restore Chelsea to their former glory.

If he wants to build for the long term, then former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann could be the ideal man to take over from Potter at Stamford Bridge.

What's the latest on Chelsea's interest in Nagelsmann?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, journalist Dean Jones provided his thoughts on the potential appointment of Nagelsmann at Stamford Bridge.

He wrote: "Sources have explained how Nagelsmann is seen as an improved version of Graham Potter and that Chelsea believe his style of coaching could mean that groundwork already put in over past months is less likely to be abandoned under his leadership.

"They have put in work too to understand exactly why his Bayern Munich reign did not work out and learnings at this moment suggest they do not feel the reasons would impact on them if he took charge of Chelsea.

"Managing so many personalities and egos is a potential problem in this situation and as part of the process Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley have been undertaking key conversations around recruiting a manager that can handle this.

Would Nagelsmann get Chelsea back to their best?

Nagelsmann would certainly arrive at Chelsea with a big reputation, having first taken Hoffenheim to the Champions League before the age of 30, which saw him described as a "genius" by the Athletic's Raphael Honigstein.

The 35-year-old averaged 1.53 points per game in his time at Hoffenheim, before steering RB Leipzig to a hugely impressive 1.94 points per game in his time with the Bundesliga outfit.

That remarkably saw the club leapfrog perennial runners-up, Borussia Dortmund, into second place in the German top flight, suggesting he knows how to get the best from his players.

Julian Nagelsmann managing Bayern Munich

This earned him a move to Bayern and despite him averaging a phenomenal 2.31 points per game there, he was sacked earlier this year.

Nagelsmann had achieved great things again in Munich, leading the German powerhouse to the top of the league and a Champions League quarter-final.

Given Potter mustered just 1.42 points per game at Chelsea, it definitely seems fair to suggest that Nagelsmann would be an improved version of the Englishman, with his attacking style and youth policy – something seen at Leipzig – also making him an ideal target for Boehly who has invested so heavily in the stars of tomorrow.

Thus, if the German is given time to adjust to Premier League football and is able to trim the squad accordingly, then he could be the ideal man to get the best out of the incredible players Chelsea have at their disposal.

He has already proven in Germany he can do exactly that; it's now time to transfer and hone those skills in English football.

Daniel Levy No Longer Keen On "Excellent" Manager For Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is "not as hot" on appointing Mauricio Pochettino as he once was, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Will Mauricio Pochettino return to Tottenham?

There are conflicting reports regarding whether Pochettino is willing to return to Tottenham, with TyC Sports reporting he rejected the opportunity to return to the club, in favour of holding out for the Real Madrid job, should Carlo Ancelotti leave at the end of the season.

However, pundit Tam McManus thinks it is "only a matter of time" before the Argentine makes his return to N17, claiming that he is bound to be "very tempted" by the vacancy, in light of his previous history with the club.

Spurs are not the only Premier League side that have been linked with a move for the 51-year-old, as Chelsea's co-sporting director, Laurence Stewart, has given him a glowing recommendation to the board.

It remains to be seen whether the Blues are interested in the former Lilywhites boss, but it appears as though Tottenham's interest is fading, with Levy no longer as keen on appointing him as he initially was.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Jones said: “I wouldn't say Pochettino is more likely to go to Real Madrid, but I would just say he's open-minded about how this could play out.

“I know people like to think that Pochettino is turning down Tottenham because he wants Real Madrid, but that's not strictly true.

“Daniel Levy is not as hot as he was on Pochettino. It's as simple as that.”

Should Tottenham appoint Mauricio Pochettino?

The Murphy-born manager will always have a special place in Tottenham fans' hearts, having led them to the final of the 2018-19 Champions League, and the supporters were heard singing his name during Saturday's 2-1 win against Brighton.

Pressure is mounting on owners ENIC, with protests about the board being staged earlier this season, and appointing Pochettino could be a good way to get the fans back on side.

Mauricio Pochettino.

That said, Tottenham have already sacked the manager on one occasion, and it would be unusual to go back in for him so soon, considering he hasn't really developed his reputation since leaving the first time.

As Paris Saint-Germain manager, the former Spurs boss won Ligue 1, however that is to be expected, and his side crashed out of the Champions League at the round of 16 stage.

Rather than looking backwards, Tottenham should continue with their pursuit of top target Julian Nagelsmann, as the German is a "progressive" manager, who could bring an exciting brand of football back to the club.

Arsenal’s £115k-p/w Dud Was Their ‘Weak’ Link vs Liverpool

Arsenal let slip their two-goal lead yesterday, but still walked away from Anfield with a more than respectable 2-2 draw against a struggling Liverpool side.

Although Jurgen Klopp’s men might not have been in the most glittering of form, having won just two of their last eight games in all competitions, at their infamous home stadium they remain a tough task for any side.

Especially for the Gunners, who historically have struggled to topple the Reds in Merseyside; their last win in the league came in 2012.

There were plenty of impressive performers on the day, who stood up to arguably one of their toughest tests as they enter the run-in. However, such was the bear pit environment crafted by the hosts, some also wilted.

Surprisingly, one such figure who disappointed was Martin Odegaard.

Their Norwegian captain has been ever-dependable all campaign, boasting ten goals and eight assists on the way to leading the pack in the Premier League.

However, it was a day to forget for the 24-year-old, who underwhelmed before his eventual substitution.

How did Martin Odegaard play vs Liverpool?

Whilst Rob Holding might steal the headlines for true poor performers, having been handed the worst Sofascore rating of any of Arsenal’s starting side and giving away a penalty, he does not demand the same lofty standards as his midfield teammate.

The English defender is merely standing in for the injured William Saliba, and everyone clearly knows that; likely even the 27-year-old himself.

Therefore, the occasional poor display against a tough side like Liverpool can be somewhat excused, almost expected.

Odegaard, however, has commanded such a spectacle surrounding each display, that when he underperforms it becomes a far greater story.

martin-odegaard-arsenal-liverpool-performance

From his 80 minutes on the field, the maestro could only muster 40 touches, completing 24 passes. He would subsequently lose possession ten times, and the only cross attempted would miss the mark, compounding an abysmal creative performance (via Sofascore).

Odegaard did play a role in advancing the ball forward for Gabriel Martinelli's opener, but that was as good as it got for the Norwegian, with journalist Sergio Santana even taking to Twitter to outline the “weak performance” posted by the 5 foot 10 wizard.

Often the former Real Madrid prodigy would make up for any attacking shortcomings with an unparalleled work rate. That also seemed missing in yesterday’s clash, as the £115k-per-week magician would record just one tackle as his sole defensive interaction. He would lose the other four duels competed in as per Sofascore.

Offensively inept and defensively work-shy, it was certainly an afternoon to forget for the usually reliable midfielder.

Odegaard has been instrumental in the current success of his outfit, but he will quickly want to dispel yesterday’s showing in order to return to the form that has led to such widespread praise.

Tottenham Could Recapture Identity With Magic 4-4-2 Manager

Tottenham Hotspur need to get their next appointment right. For too long a club of their size has languished far away from the major honours, leading to widespread ridicule from rival fans. They should be fighting for silverware every season, yet far too often they find their campaign ended in January as they exit both cups.

However, one pitfall they cannot afford to fall into again is to hire someone to fulfil that sole purpose. Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho were born winners and had done so at every club before joining the Lilywhites. It just feels like the foundations are not in place for such a consistent assault for trophies quite yet.

Therefore, Daniel Levy could perhaps divert his attention away from these ageing mercenaries whose best days are behind them, and instead opt for someone who can lead them into the future.

Whilst Mauricio Pochettino had done so in his early stint in north London, leading them up the Premier League table and into a Champions League final, his potential return would mark a similar blunder as their recent hires.

The Argentine has only struggled since his sacking, ultimately being given the boot by PSG too, and many could argue he too fits into that category of coaches whose best days are behind them.

Therefore, of the manager list that is ever-changing, Vincent Kompany should be the outstanding candidate for where they seek to go in the future.

How is Vincent Kompany's managerial philosophy?

Having already secured promotion with his Burnley side, the rapidity with which he turned the relegated Clarets around was astounding. Joining from Anderlecht, few knew how the Belgian would manage as the squad was purged upon their exit from the top division.

Chairman Alan Pace had admitted that there was a three-year plan in place for their promotion back, but the "magic" that his appointment has worked shocked even him.

Another issue that plagued him was the play style, which many thought they knew well: they will lump it long, feed off the second balls and look to dominate in the air.

mauricio-pochettino-tottenham-hotspur-hugo-lloris

Kompany wasted no time in rewriting this script. Maintaining a 4-4-2 shape, much of the 37-year-old's philosophy was born through Pep Guardiola's tutelage. As what is essentially the antithesis to that aforementioned Burnley stereotype, suddenly short and sharp passes were exchanged to progress them up the Turf Moor field.

Patience is key for the former Manchester City defender, but a high press is even more imperative in maintaining a stranglehold on every game his teams partake in.

This enthralling style has seen them hit 91 points already in the Championship, having scored 78 times in 41 games and conceding just 30. They are both the top scorers and have conceded the least in the division.

With an identity crisis of sorts going on at Spurs, as the turgid and pragmatic football that promised trophies continues to falter, perhaps a return to the form of those early days under Pochettino could help them recapture what made the club so special.

However, they must do so without relying on relics of the past, and instead betting on the future to lead them to glory.

Chelsea: "Crazy" Manager Enters Pole Position For Job

TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has shared an update on Chelsea's pursuit of free agent manager Julian Nagelsmann.

Who could Chelsea appoint as manager?

Reports have suggested that co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have certainly started their search for a new permanent manager after Graham Potter's departure earlier this month.

Many credible candidates have been linked with taking the job, perhaps most notably Nagelsmann, former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique and ex-Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The west Londoners have appointed Frank Lampard on an interim basis until the end of this Premier League season, and it could not be going any worse for the club legend – who is still yet to record his first win since taking charge.

Chelsea are also out of the Champions League and officially will not bring home a piece of silverware this summer, making their search for a new boss all the more important for next campaign.

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann celebrates after the match vs Spurs

Nagelsmann, who was surprisingly sacked by Bayern Munich this season despite them fighting on all fronts at the time, is being billed as a major contender to succeed Potter.

Now, sharing news from 'sources' close to Enrique, Crook claims to talkSPORT that those around the Spaniard believe Nagelsmann has entered pole position for the job as he 'emerges as frontrunner'.

The 35-year-old has apparently already held talks with the Chelsea hierarchy about replacing Potter, but they will still need to negotiate a settlement with Bayern if they do opt to appoint Nagelsmann.

Indeed, despite being relieved of his duties, Nagelsmann is still 'under contract' with the Bavarian giants.

Is Nagelsmann perfect for Chelsea?

The former RB Leipzig boss has been revered for his excellent approach to games tactically with BBC Sport writer Raj Chohan calling him 'outstanding' in that regard.

The same reporter has also called Nagelsmann 'crazy' for some of his unique in-game tactics and formations – potentially making him an exciting option for Chelsea.

Nagelsmann's teams adopt an intense, high-pressing style where his players push on the front foot with Man City boss Pep Guardiola tipping him to be a success as far back as his Hoffenheim days.

Speaking before City's Champions League group stage clashes with the German side in 2018, Guardiola explained:

“I’m really, really impressed [with Nagelsmann]. Taking over Hoffenheim in such a bad situation so young. He will have a lot of success in his career.

"He’s already at a good team in a top competition. It’s the first time we meet, but hopefully it won’t be the last."

Chelsea could bank, arguably, the most exciting young manager in Europe if they do make him a formal offer.
