Celtic: Fabrizio Romano shares Joe Hart update

Fabrizio Romano believes an ‘agreement now close’ for Celtic to sign Tottenham goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Romano was the first to share the Hoops’ interest in the 34-year-old goalkeeper.

He suggested that Celtic opened talks over a move for the 75-cap England international on Wednesday.

Journalist Ekrem Konur added that the Scottish giants don’t want to pay for the ‘keeper, presumably hoping Spurs will allow Hart to depart for nothing in order to clear his wages off the books.

The Latest: Romano’s post

Romano, who has tweeted several Celtic-related transfer posts during the current window, including on Carl Starfelt, shared an update on the situation with Hart on Thursday afternoon.

The transfer expert said that negotiations are ‘progressing’ before adding that ‘agreement now close’ – a significant three-word update.

Romano stated that Spurs are open to letting go of Hart after signing Pierluigi Gollini on loan.

The Verdict: Deal to be announced soon?

Romano’s two updates were just 30 hours apart, so it seems as if the Hoops have made pretty swift progress on a potential swoop for Hart.

Should that trend progress, a transfer may well go through relatively quickly. You’d expect any fee for Hart would be able to be agreed on as Spurs are open to getting his wages off the books in north London.

Hart may then move north and immediately take the number one spot, with Ange Postecoglou already using two goalkeepers in his two competitive games in charge at Celtic Park in Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain.

A gente vem trabalhando.

Spurs closing in on first summer signing

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be closing in on their first signing of the summer…

What’s the word?

The Premier League outfit have been pursuing a move for Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu for several weeks and now it seems as if a deal is nearly over the line.

That’s according to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who revealed on Twitch.tv that a move was “real close” after Spurs recently submitted a new proposal.

Last week, Football Insider claimed that personal terms had been agreed with the Japan international over a long-term contract, so it’s now on Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy to strike a fee with Bologna.

It’s also thought that the Lilywhites have previously offered €18m (€16m) but the Serie A outfit his holding out for something in the region of €20m (£18m) to €25m (£21.5m), though the right-back is keen to join the club.

Start of a new era

This move will be the first from Spurs this summer, if successful, and will kickstart an exciting new time in North London. It’s not only Nuno Santo’s first signing but Paratici’s too.

The Italian’s reign in N17 will be determined by his activity in the transfer market and in Tomiyasu, Spurs are getting a very impressive talent and one that will bolster the playing squad instantly.

Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old is versatile enough to play through the middle and out on the right, so he could help be the solution to two of their long-standing problems.

Last season, individual errors and a lack of cohesion saw Spurs record the worst defensive record of any of the traditional ‘big six’ teams. One of Jose Mourinho’s most utilised partnerships (he did use over 16 in total) was scorned by ex-midfielder Jamie O’Hara back in February.

“I don’t know why Jose keeps playing [Davinson] Sanchez and [Eric] Dier because it’s probably one of the worst partnerships in the Premier League,” he told talkSPORT.

Similarly, Serge Aurier reverted back to his calamitous ways, leading to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher deeming him “one of the biggest liabilities in Premier League football.”

As the 6 foot 2 Bologna star can play in both positions, Nuno has a pretty solid asset at his disposal.

After all, Tomiyasu’s current teammate and fellow full-back Mitchell Dijks dubbed him a “true Japanese warrior” to reporters, via Tuttosport, back in 2019.

The young defender rated out as Bologna’s third-best player (6.77), as per WhoScored ratings, and despite being an imposing physical presence, winning 2.9 aerial battles per game, he was equally adept with the ball at his feet, recording a seasonal passing success rate of 82.1%.

Furthermore, he displayed his intelligence and impressive ability to read the game by recording an average of 1.7 interceptions and 1.5 tackles per league outing, too.

That’s more aerial duels won than every defender bar Dier, more interceptions than even Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and a better accuracy than Giovani Lo Celso, via WhoScored.

Paratici, Nuno, Levy and the Hotspur faithful should be absolutely buzzing as they close in on the 23-time Japan international. It’ll be quite the coup, indeed.

AND in other news, Paratici could finally replace Dembele with Spurs swoop for “complete” £26m “machine”…

I would love to lead Pakistan again, says Wasim

Waqar Younis, the Pakistan captain, is likely to lose not only the leadership of his country’s team in the forthcoming World Cup in South Africa next February, but also his place in the side

Qamar Ahmed19-Dec-2002Waqar Younis, the Pakistan captain, is likely to lose not only the leadership of his country’s team in the forthcoming World Cup in South Africa next February, but also his place in the side.Waqar for his lack of form and support within the team on the South African leg of the tour could be replaced by his old foe and new-ball partner Wasim Akram to take over the reins of captaincy for the important event. The enigmatic Pakistan cricket outfit is already in motion to implement the change. The only hiccup of course is the recommendation and the ban slapped on Wasim by Justice Mohammad Qayyum in his report on match-fixing and bribery stating that Wasim should not be given the captaincy of Pakistan in future. The recommendation of course will have no feet to stand on if challenged in a court of law because no substantial evidence of Wasim’s involvement in match-fixing has ever been presented nor allegations against him ever proved, and since he has been playing for his country ever since that report, that in itself qualifies him to lead his country as well.Wasim, a veteran of 104 Tests and 350 one-dayers, is hoping that the restrictions recommended in the report for him not being appointed captain of Pakistan could be lifted as soon as he arrives back in Pakistan after the culmination of the five-match one-day series in South Africa which Pakistan has already lost.”I hear from various quarters that the PCB is considering a change in captaincy and that I could be asked to lead the side. I shall of course consider it and love to lead Pakistan again. I also know about Justice Qayyum’s recommendations about me. But nothing has ever been proven and I think it is unfair that I can play for Pakistan but can’t lead it,” the former captain said.”I will however feel sorry for Waqar if he loses his place in the team,” he sympathised.Wasim, who was picked to play in both one-day and Test for this leg of the tour, however says that there was a misunderstanding about his availability for the Test.”I had it made very clear that I will play in only one-day matches, the reason being that I shall be going back to Pakistan after the end of the fifth one-day game in Cape Town. There is no confusion about it,” he said.Wasim is likely to leave for Pakistan along with Shoaib Akhtar who has also declared his unavailability for the two Tests against South Africa citing niggling pain in his right knee. Rashid Latif and Misbah-ul-Haq will accompany them also.Only last September both the coach of the team Mudassar Nazar and the manager Yawar Saeed were unceremoniously replaced by Richard Pybus and Brig Khawaja Mohammad Nasir.

SOMERSET05-Oct-2002Somerset chief executive Peter Anderson was in reflective mood at the County Ground as he sat reading through some of the replies to the letter that he sent out to all members of the club following the disappointments of the 2002 season. In all the Somerset boss has so far received 58 letters the vast majority of which thank him for going to the trouble of writing the letter.A small minority of the letters express concerns about the effect on the morale of the players. Many correspondents put forward their own views but by and large most were very understanding of the reasons why a losing team in a downward spiral would find it hard to stop their poor performances.Mr Anderson told me: "I am always appreciative of members writing to me whether I agree with their points of view or not, because it is important that the club knows the views of members."The Somerset boss continued: "We will shortly be starting our rounds of area meetings, and I hope members will take advantage of the opportunity of the chance to come along and air their points of view."Each of the area meetings will be attended by either Mr Anderson, or the Club Chairman Richard Parsons. The full list of meetings is as follows:Bath and Wiltshire Area, October 15th at Bath CC at 7.45pm attended by Richard Parsons.Mid Somerset Area, October 15th at Glastonbury at 7.30pm attended by Peter Anderson.South Somerset and Dorset Area, October 17th at Yeovil Town FC at 8pm attended by Richard Parsons.Taunton Area, October 22nd at The County Ground at 7.30 attended by Peter Anderson.Devon and Cornwall Area, October 23rd at the Coaver Club in Exeter at 8pm attended by Peter Anderson.Weston super Mare Area, October 24th at Weston super Mare Cricket Club at 7.30pm attended by Richard Parsons.North Somerset Area, October 28th at the Angel Inn, Long Ashton at 8pm attended by Richard Parsons.Bridgwater and Coastal Area, October 29th at the County Ground at 7.30pm attended by Peter Anderson.’If any members have any queries or want further details regarding their area meeting they should contact membership secretary Jo Arnold on 01823 272946.

West Ham: Lingard chances decreasing

West Ham’s chances of signing Jesse Lingard on a permanent basis appear to be decreasing by the week…

What’s the word?

The ever-reliable ExWHUemployee revealed a gutting update over the situation during the latest episode of ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast, where he said:

“I think I would maybe say, [a] 30% [chance] he will come to West Ham. It is my opinion and I’m not ruling anything out.

“I would have said a lot higher a couple of weeks ago, 85/90%.

“It’s just based upon a conversation I had the other day with someone that would know him well and it indicated to me that he was more keen to get back to Manchester United and establish himself there than to move and be good at West Ham. But I guess time will tell.”

Chances decreasing

This is just another setback in the Irons’ bid to bring the 28-year-old back to the London Stadium this summer following a very successful half-season loan spell.

Indeed, the Manchester United outcast emerged as a star man under David Moyes, scoring nine goals and providing five assists. His form saw him graded as West Ham’s second-best player (7.22), as per WhoScored ratings, whilst no player averaged more shots per game (2.6) and he wasn’t far behind for dribbles (1.1) and key passes (1.1) per match either.

The Scotsman reiterated his desire to keep hold of Lingard following their final-day win over Southampton, three points which sealed their place in the Europa League next term.

“I hope Jesse’s here, we’d like to keep him, he’s done an exceptional job for us but there’s no guarantees, he’s not our player,” Moyes told reporters, via the Evening Standard. “But I hope Jesse realises we’ve been good for him as well, and that he joined a club on the up.”

Lingard has struggled for regular game time in recent seasons, something that the Hammers have been able to give him, almost leading to a spot in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad, so it seems baffling to stay at Old Trafford to sit behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek.

This latest claim will also be devastating for much of the East London faithful, many of whom appear to have been just as eager to see the £20m-rated dynamo back at the club.

Lingard’s reported desire to stay at United will certainly not go down well at West Ham.

AND in other news, Moyes risks West Ham disaster over shocking Lingard alternative who was a “liability” in 2020/21…

Another sad and rainy day in Buenos Aires

Torrential rain wreaked havoc with the 2nd Americas Cricket Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the second consecutive day

Grant Dugmore11-Mar-2002Torrential rain wreaked havoc with the 2nd Americas Cricket Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the second consecutive day.It all added up to another sad and rainy day, as in two days, five out of six games have been abandoned without a ball being bowled, while the Argentina v USA clash at Hurlingham somehow managed to find enough respite between the storms to fit in some 35 overs of play, but not enough to somehow manafacture a result one way or another. On top of all the disappointment, a further setback for local organisers is the temporary loss of San Albano as a venue when the area was hit by a freak storm, uprooting trees and unleashing savage winds and heavy rain on the ground and the immediate vicinity. This after the Argentine Cricket Association and dedicated members of the local St.Albans club had succeeded against all odds in a race against time in order to complete the construction of a brand new turf wicket facility, so that this important event could be played only on turf wickets. For the next few days at least, some fixtures will have to be completed on artificial wickets at reserve venues. The unseasonal and severe weather has forced organisers to restructure the entire tournament, which will now consist only of a round-robin group without a final between the top two teams to establish the champion. Instead, the winner of the mini-league, after five consecutive days of matches from Tuesday 12th to Saturday 16th, will be declared Americas Champion. No games will be played on Monday 11th, allowing locals to put various logistical changes into place, as well as to allow the grounds some recovery time from the violent climatic onslaught over the weekend. The fixture schedule sees some changes – matches previously scheduled for Saturday 9th will now be contested on the final day, Saturday 16th, while matches that we due to be completed today, Sunday 10th, will be completed on Thursday 14th. The original fixture schedule for Tuesday 12th, Wednesday 13th and Friday 15th, will remain as previously scheduled, apart from the venues to be confirmed for matches previously scheduled for San Albano. In the only cricket action witnessed thus far, hosts Argentina may take a great deal of confidence into their next game, after reducing the United States to 97 for 5 after 28,2 overs before the first storm intervened. Hero for the home side was medium-pacer Christian Tuon, who completed his 10 overs, taking a fine 4 for 43. Still, even though the Argentines will feel satisfied with that solid effort, of that 97 total, 33 of those runs were gifted by wides and no balls. After heroic efforts by local officials and assistants, the game eventually got underway again at 4.40 pm, with Argentina needing 117 to win in 25 overs after the Duckworth-Lewis adjustment. They looked to be heading towards an historic victory, when (no prizes for guessing) another storm promptly ended the days play with their score poised at 33 for 1 after 7 overs, and a no result conclusion.Summarised scores:
UNITED STATES 97 for 5 (28,2 overs) A.Afzaluddin 23, S.Pathak 16 not out, C.Tuon 4 – 43, L.Paterlini 1 – 17
ARGENTINA 33 for 1 (7 overs) M.Paterlini 16 not out, L.Paterlini 14, D.Blake 1 – 20 ; No Result.
