Liverpool linked with move for Noa Lang

With 22 goals scored in their opening eight Premier League games of the season, it’s safe to say Liverpool have not been shy in an attacking sense so far in their latest campaign, with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah contributing 16 of those 22 goals between them.

Despite this impressive start to their season in front of goal, it seems as though the Merseyside club have their eye on potentially adding a new attacking star to their squad.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Italian media outlet Calciomercato (via Sport Witness) that Liverpool are in the lead to sign Club Brugge winger Noa Lang.

The Belgian club originally signed Lang, who has been described as “pure class” by analyst Filip Joos, on a loan deal from Ajax in October 2020 before securing him on a permanent deal in the recent summer transfer window.

Overall, the 22-year-old, who is currently valued at £22.5m according to Transfermarkt, has made 51 appearances for the club across all competitions in which he’s managed to score 21 goals and provide 16 assists in the process, which could be why the Reds are apparently interested in signing him.

Potential Mane heir?

In terms of a potential move to Liverpool, either in the upcoming January transfer window or the next summer window, we feel that he could well be a good signing for the Merseyside club and act as a potential long-term heir for current Reds winger Sadio Mane.

With the 29-year-old’s current contract at Anfield set to expire in the summer of 2023, we feel that if he were to leave Liverpool at that point, this could potentially see Lang take a prominent place in Klopp’s side.

With Lang having made more key passes per game (1.9) and dribbles per game (2.5) than Mane has managed in the Premier League so far this season, with 1.1 key passes and one dribble per game, this shows the similar qualities the two players have and why Lang could be a good option for the club in the future depending on what Mane does.

In our view, if Liverpool are interested in signing Lang for a suitable price, they should definitely explore the possibility to bring him in as a squad player with the potential to then become a regular first-team player given his young age.

The confounding Mr Gul

Umar Gul became the first bowler to claim five-wickets in a 20-over international and, according to Daniel Vettori, the first to achieve reverse swing.Vettori’s stunned expression at the post-match press conference at The Oval spoke volumes for Gul’s bewitching influence over his side. The sixth bowler used by Younis Khan, Gul’s entry in the 13th over of the innings paid immediate dividends, with Scott Styris and Peter McGlashan falling to his third and fourth deliveries. Gul sent Nathan McCullum’s leg-stump cartwheeling in his next over, then closed with the dismissals of James Franklin and Kyle Mills – again in consecutive balls.Gul finished with the astonishing figures of 5-6 from three overs, and the satisfaction of having entranced a New Zealand side four days removed from pushing South Africa, the tournament favourites, to the wire at Lord’s.”I’ve never, ever seen someone reverse the ball after 12 overs,” said Vettori, a 13-year international veteran. “He managed to do that and that made a real difference.”He obviously bowled really well. He got the ball to reverse, and I don’t think in the history of Twenty20 cricket anyone’s got the ball to reverse. That made a massive difference today, and with his pace and his accuracy as well as the ball reversing he was a difficult proposition.”I really don’t know (how). It’s the first time I’ve ever seen it happen.”Younis said the explanation lay in the bowler’s action and the nature of Twenty20 cricket where the ball is hit hard and often. “Gul is effective during the middle overs. He has the pace, the reverse swing, a good action for it. Actually he has a very good action for reverse swing.”This is not the first time he has done it for us – the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup also he was leading wicket-taker. The good thing about his bowling is that he bowls in the middle and there is a lot of hits on the ball and the ball all the time goes in crowd and hits the wall and these kind of things and sometimes that is a factor for us.”Gul, meanwhile, credited his devastating form to the influence of two of Pakistan’s finest exponents of reverse-swing bowling. “I have really developed my yorker by watching videos of Waqar and Wasim,” he said. “They have really helped me.”In Twenty20, you have to be able to bowl the yorker, bouncer and the slower ball. Now I want to be the highest wicket-taker in the tournament. My captain just told me to go and get wickets and that’s what I did.”

Late wickets spoil Pakistan's day

Having decided to bowl first under overcast skies, Sri Lanka were indebtedto Thilan Thushara for two breakthroughs in a morning session otherwisedominated by Pakistan

How they were out
Mohammad Yousuf played a composed innings but fell 10 runs short of his century•Associated PressFor vast swathes of the 86 overs bowled in the day, Pakistan’s batsmenheld sway, blunting a modest attack on a pitch that lost most of itsmoisture and bite after the opening session. But with stumps beckoning, the second new ball vindicated Kumar Sangakkara’s decision to bowl first, with three wickets in the space of eight balls reducing Pakistan to 289for 7.Pakistan’s total total owed much to Khurram Manzoor and Mohammad Yousuf, who added 167for the third wicket after Thilan Thushara had taken two wickets in anover to stymie a promising start. Both Manzoor and Yousuf were dismissedin the 90s, and it was left to Shoaib Malik and Misbah-ul-Haq to shepherdthe side through to the close. They nearly managed to, until the new ballturned out to be the big bad wolf.Malik, short of runs and form in the series, had struck some pleasingstrokes on his way to 45, and the partnership with Misbah was worth 75when Thushara arced one into his pads from outside off stump. Malikmissed, and that was that. Three balls later, Misbah lunged to drive NuwanKulasekara, and the thin inside edge was neatly taken by TillakaratneDilshan behind the stumps. When Umar Gul then chopped one back on to hisstumps, the reversal of fortune was complete. It may have been the last bow for Chaminda Vaas, a veteran of 111 Testswith 354 wickets to his name, but apart from that Thushara over inmid-morning, there was little for Sri Lanka to celebrate after they sentPakistan in to bat under overcast Colombo skies. Fawad Alam, with acentury on debut last week, had just struck his first four of the innings, when he edged one behind to Dilshan, and if Thushara was delighted withthat, he was positively delirious three balls later. Younis Khan cut oneback on to his stumps, and 34 for 0 had become 36 for 2.As Yousuf walked out, wagers were probably placed on how quickly RanganaHerath would be brought on. As it was, Sangakkara waited till the17th over before throwing the ball to Sri Lanka’s surprise spin weapon ofthe series, but the impact wasn’t what was desired. The first-sessiondamage would have been greater than 103 runs but for a sluggish outfieldthat didn’t give the batsmen full value for their strokes.Once the nerves had settled, Yousuf lofted Herath over long-off for six,and with Thushara then conceding 11 in an over, the runs started toaccumulate at a fair clip. Yousuf cut Herath for four, before drivingAngelo Mathews beautifully behind square, and it was Pakistan that wentinto the lunch break with faith restored. After the slump that cost themthe series, though, complacency certainly wasn’t on the menu.A superb cut and a back-foot punch through cover took Manzoor to hishalf-century from 85 balls, while Yousuf required 15 balls fewer for his.The 100-run partnership arrived in 24.3 overs, and soon after, Manzoorthumped Herath over his head for four, a stroke that he was to repeatlater in the session.Sri Lanka’s bowlers created few wicket-taking chances and struggled forconsistency, though Vaas did staunch the run flow in the second hour afterlunch. With Kulasekara short on pace, another edge fell short of slip andwent for four. And the hosts’ woes were compounded when Vaas missed arun-out chance with Manzoor on 65.Manzoor was content to leave a lot of deliveries and the bowlers obligedby bowling poor lines. By the tea interval, Sri Lanka had endured the firstbarren session of the series. When Sangakkara gave the ball to MahelaJayawardene after tea, it appeared to illustrate Sri Lankan despair, butonce Vaas returned, the game changed.A clearly nervous Manzoor poked at one that left him, and Yousuf was thenrun out off an overthrow after taking the single that had seen himcomplete 7000 runs. His 90 had spanned just 146 balls, and it was left tothe aggressive Malik and the more sedate Misbah to repair the damage. Onceagain, though, wickets falling in a heap undid much of the day’s good work.

Key update on big-money West Ham target

West Ham could have to pay more than £22million to sign Club Brugge youngster Charles De Ketelaere, according to journalist Mo Messoudi.

The Lowdown: West Ham linked with De Ketelaere move

The Hammers are reportedly interested in signing the 20-year-old, according to a story earlier this week, with Everton also linked with a move.

De Ketelaere is one of Belgium’s most exciting emerging talents, already scoring four times in the Jupiler Pro League this season, as well as registering two assists.

The Latest: Journalist makes big claim

If West Ham are genuinely keen on making a bid for the Belgian, however, they are expected to have to break the bank to acquire his services.

That’s according to Messoudi, who told Gazet van Antwerpen [via West Ham Zone] that they would have to pay more than the £22million Rennes spent on Jeremy Doku, which is the current outgoing transfer record in Belgium:

“Club Brugge used him smartly last season, and he did not burn out. They allowed him to rest at the right time and put him on the bench. Now, De Ketelaere is reaping the benefits.

“As an attacking all-rounder, he’s even (Club Brugge’s) top scorer.

“For me, De Ketelaere is the most valuable player in Belgium at the moment. I am sure he will break the outgoing transfer record set by Jeremy Doku.”

The Verdict: Worth the money?

De Ketelaere is clearly a special young talent, so West Ham could be wise to take a gamble on him and pay a huge amount of money.

He has already made 85 appearances for Brugge, despite his tender years, with 11 goals and 13 assists in that time proof that his game also contains substance.

De Ketelaere has scored once in two caps for Belgium, too, suggesting a bright international career awaits him, further highlighting why West Ham would be wise to make a move.

Pundit bemoans Luke Ayling injury update

Luke Ayling’s injury layoff is “absolutely gutting” for Leeds United, according to former West Ham and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie.

The Lowdown: Ayling sidelined with injury

Ayling has been a fantastic servant for the Whites, making 198 appearances to date and proving to be a key player throughout Marcelo Bielsa’s reign.

Unfortunately, the 30-year-old is currently out with a knee injury and hasn’t featured for Leeds since the 1-1 draw at Newcastle United last month.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375277″]

The Latest: Pundit bemoans absence

Injury expert Ben Dinnery has claimed that Ayling may not return until after next month’s international break, which would be an undoubted blow for Leeds.

Speaking to Football Insider after that update emerged, McAvennie rued the news, given his importance to the team:

“Losing a stalwart like that is gutting, absolutely gutting. It upsets the rhythm of the team. He was never not there last season and we saw how good they were.

“Obviously, he scored a huge goal on the first day, we know how good he can be. Leeds have a few issues at the back and this is one they are going to have to fix. His absence is a massive blow.

“The mental side of it is a big one. Those players in the middle, like Phillips, won’t be as confident without Ayling behind them.

“They have a few big games to play, they need to get away from that bottom three as well. You need your best players for that so Ayling being ruled out, as I say, I’m gutted for him.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-20/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Time for Shackleton to shine

There is no denying that Ayling is a big miss for the Whites, not only possessing great character on the pitch but also providing constant energy and quality down the right flank.

If he is going to be absent for an extended period of time, Jamie Shackleton may be tasked with filling the void, instead of Stuart Dallas playing an auxiliary role.

The 22-year-old has managed two league starts already this season and did well in the 1-0 win over Watford last time around and it will be interesting to see how he fares at Southampton on Saturday, assuming he starts.

Pogba was the real star against Newcastle

Manchester United extended their unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.

Summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return to the club with a well-taken brace, predictably stealing the headlines on his first Old Trafford outing since leaving 12 years ago.

However, it was arguably another one of United’s household names that was the real star of the show for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges.

World Cup-winning midfielder Paul Pogba put in another fabulous performance on Saturday, controlling the centre of pitch with his incredible passing range and dictating the tempo of the game.

The 28-year-old also provided two assists for his teammates, taking his tally up to seven for the season after just four top-flight appearances.

And his underlying numbers were perhaps even more impressive. As per SofaScore, Pogba made three key passes during the 90 minutes, created one big chance and had a whopping 129 touches.

He also achieved a passing accuracy of 92%, won eight duels and pulled off two successful dribbles, leading to a match rating of 8.1 out of 10, the second-highest amongst any player on the pitch.

Doubt still remains over the Frenchman’s future in Manchester as he has now entered the final year of his current contract at the club, and after his blistering start to 2021/22, Solskjaer will surely be desperate for Pogba to put pen to paper on fresh terms as quickly as possible.

United’s Champions League campaign gets underway in midweek, and Pogba will be hoping to take his domestic form onto the European stage when the 20-time English champions take on Young Boys.

Ponting seeks happy end to tough year

Ricky Ponting is hoping for a better end to a 2008 that has brought some disappointments © Getty Images

As Ricky Ponting’s toughest year in charge of the Australian team draws to a close he is facing one of the Test matches that could define his captaincy. A loss to South Africa in Melbourne would concede the series and cap off a disappointing year that began with a narrow but controversial series win against India at home and continued with a 2-0 loss in India.”Yeah probably,” Ponting said when asked if 2008 had been his hardest year. “Whenever the team doesn’t have the success that we all want to have then as a captain your responsibility is to cop whatever criticism comes your way.”The buck stops with me as far as our performance is concerned. I think we’ve all been a little bit disappointed with the way some of the results have gone. I think we all knew at the start of this year that we had some very tough cricket ahead of us.”Ponting is leading the side through a period of uncertainty the likes of which the country has rarely seen since Allan Border’s reign. Ponting was the first Australian leader to give up the Ashes since Border’s men regained the prize in 1989; he is desperate to avoid being the captain to lose Australia’s first series at home since Border’s side went down to West Indies in 1992-93.After South Africa’s brilliant win in Perth, Australia were left in the unfamiliar situation of being 1-0 in a three-Test series. It is a position they have never recovered from for a series win in their 120 years of Test cricket. For such a comeback to occur this time, Ponting needs his senior men to lead the way.Matthew Hayden and Brett Lee have come under fire during the week as both men have struggled to find their trademark spark and Ponting is desperate for the pair to lift themselves on the biggest stage. He also needs stronger contributions from the rest of the batting line-up. Much was made of the failure of Australia’s bowlers, Mitchell Johnson aside, in Perth but it was the inability of the batsmen to build an impregnable lead that frustrated Ponting as much as anything. In the first innings they wobbled to 3 for 15; in the second they teetered to 7 for 162. On a pitch where South Africa chased down 414 with six wickets in hand it was not a good enough effort. Ponting was at least happy that the batting problems did not seem to stem from technical failures or lack of ability.”The top-order batting in both innings left a little bit to be desired so that’s one area that we all want to tighten up,” Ponting said. “For us as a batting group there’s some positives that we can take out of that, knowing that we all did get off to some good starts and probably mentally more than anything is where we let ourselves down. That’s to be changed this week.”The experienced batting line-up is even more important in a side whose attack is relatively young. Peter Siddle has kept his place and will play his first Test at his home ground the MCG, despite taking only one wicket in Perth, while Nathan Hauritz has been added for his second Test of the summer. The inexperienced men will be under intense pressure at the MCG, where the crowds are massive and vocal. The significance of the Test was not lost on Ponting; the next five days could either end Australia’s dominance at home or prove their fighting qualities have not deserted them.”There’s no doubt that this is a big one and generally the Australian team under adversity or when a big moment comes up or a big game comes up, we generally bring out our best performance,” Ponting said. “You can argue last week that it probably wasn’t our best performance in a big game and maybe it wasn’t … now it’s about making sure that everything does work out for us this week.”

Selection-meeting leaks 'disgusting' – Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has described as “disgusting and disrespectful” the fact that matters discussed in selection meetings are leaked and reported in the media. India’s selectors chose Irfan Pathan over RP Singh for the next two ODIs against England, and reports of a serious disagreement over the choice cast a cloud over India’s preparations for the fourth ODI against England in Bangalore.”I don’t know where the report came from. What happens inside a meeting where the selectors, the captain and the coaches are there, when it comes out it is disgusting and disrespectful,” Dhoni said, after India’s training session at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. “Things like this should not be happening. I’m not saying something happened at the meeting, but over the years we have seen things being leaked from meetings.”The Kolkata-based Anandabazar Patrika reported on Saturday that Dhoni favoured the inclusion of RP in the squad for the next two ODIs, and offered to step down when the selectors insisted on replacing him with Pathan. The report said Shashank Manohar, the board president, had been informed of the argument.BCCI officials, however, have denied the report. “I don’t talk about selection meetings. In any case it is all rubbish,” N Srinivisan, the board secretary, told Cricinfo.”This is the pinnacle of the sport. We are selecting 15 guys for the Indian team,” said Dhoni. “There will be debates inside, and that information should not be put out in the media. If it is meant to come out, then I can say we might as well have the whole meeting telecast live on television. Nobody knows what was discussed except the eight guys in the meeting. And only they know whether it’s the truth or not.”Dhoni said he did not speak to the BCCI because he felt it was not important. In his view, matters of selection should be made public only by the BCCI, the chairman of selectors, or one of the individuals on the selection panel. “We have an important match coming up, and we chose instead to focus on that match,” he said. “This is a selection thing and personally I don’t discuss anything outside. To some extent it does distract us. The good part is that we trust each other – every player in the team trusts the other.”Dhoni pledged his support to both RP and Pathan, who he said had faith in his abilities. “There might be a scenario where all of a sudden we might want to get in touch with RP Singh and Irfan Pathan. And you don’t want RP to feel that I will go out of the way and stand and defend him and Irfan should not feel I don’t want him in the team. I will stand and defend both these players and both of them trust me. My talks with them went off well.””We do not have players in this team with outstanding talent, which can win every game. But as a team we are outstanding. So for us the mantra is being a team, and these things will not break the trust we have in each other. It’s important for us to be a team.”
