Wolves journalist thinks Conor Coady could be in trouble

Conor Coady is one Wolves player who could lose out following Bruno Lage’s appointment, journalist Luke Hatfield has told Football FanCast.

Lage was appointed as Wolves boss last month and is a manager known for playing 4-4-2.

In contrast, his predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo preferred using a 3-4-3 or something close to that formation during his time at Molineux, meaning a central defender like Coady had more support and cover around him.

With that not being there in a back four, which Lage could potentially use in the upcoming season, Hatfield fears for the England international’s future.

“In terms of winners and losers, I think there’s a real question mark now over a key player really in Conor Coady,” the Express & Star journalist said.

“He is vitally important to them in terms of leadership. The question has always been can he do it in a four? Nuno obviously kind of shifted him as a defensive midfielder into a three and it worked incredibly well in that central role.

“But when Wolves have played a four, he’s been a little bit isolated at times and there are question marks over that. So I think there are serious question marks over him.”

Indeed, there is a bit of uncertainty surrounding Coady following Lage’s arrival. As well as the doubts about whether he can play in a back four, the 28-year-old is also being linked with a move to Everton.

According to Football Insider, new Everton manager Rafael Benitez has given his club the green light to move for the Wolves man.

Qual o balanço do time?

The myth of Lee's 100 mph delivery

Having looked after the “bowling speeds” list on CricInfo for the past couple of years, I must say that the events of the last few weeks have been rather bewildering. We have seen Shoaib Akhtar unveil his new found genuine extra yard of pace in Pakistan, we’ve seen the 100 mph mark broken on a single horizontal velocity radar device, and the most puzzling and quite humorous “revelation” of all, was the fact that Brett Lee had registered 161.8 kph on the IDS Sports radar guns in Australia in the 2000/1 season.Over the past 16 months or so I must have received 60 emails regarding that particular ball. In hindsight the correct thing to do would have been to add a little note to the bowling speeds list to let the public why that measurement was not listed. I did not do that. Instead, I chose to answer each and every one of those e-mails with a standard reply which I will now pass on.The ball in question was recorded by the IDS Sports company After many years in the field they have the business of recording bowling speeds down to a fine art and very few erroneous speeds actually get to the T.V monitors. The 161.8 kph from Lee to Walsh in Brisbane was one such ball. however.Three IDS radar instruments are trained at the ball, and are triggered just prior to the time of a ball’s release by the bowler. The three radar guns in question usually display the same result, give or take a kph or so. A slight difference occurs when one radar actually records the ball at the exact point of release and thus will record a slightly higher reading than the other two which capture it a split second later. The speed at the point of release is what is displayed on the T.V monitors and at the ground. If, say, the one particular gun records a speed of 160 kph and the other two record 142kph and 141kph, then it is assumed that the 160 kph speed is incorrect. A certain message will then usually appear on the gun in question to inform the gun’s handler that a microwave emitting device has interfered with the frequency of that particular gun and the highest speed recorded is dismissed as a error. In the case of the ball in question, this is exactly what took place, except for the fact that this particular ball escaped the net so to speak. The speed of 161.8 kph did appear on the public’s television screens and many people may have seen it. What makes this particular situation a little humorous and more than a little disturbing is the fact that 16 months after the event, the ball is making headlines all around the world.I use the word humorous because that very day and later in the telecast, the ball in question was referred to by Richie Benaud. Now I personally didn’t bother to keep the tape for reference, but in general terms Mr Benaud said that the ball from Brett Lee to conclude the West Indian innings showed up as above 160kph, but the actual ball speed was 142kph as recorded by the back up radars. Obviously the anonymous person who managed to help this video into the hands of Brett Lee’s manager must have missed the afternoon’s telecast, or simply chose to ignore those words by one of cricket’s very best and experienced commentators. This matter was resolved a mere hour or so after the event, but 16 months later it raises its head in what must at least be deemed as highly unusual circumstances.Just for the record. Brett Lee’s fastest ball of the 2000/1 season in Australia was recorded at 150 kph in the Perth test. Following ankle injuries, Brett Lee’s speed had not yet returned to that of the 1999/00 season in which he was consistently around and beyond the 150kph mark. From memory, the bowling spell in question was constantly around the 144kph mark and definitely no single ball of that spell exceeded 150kph. Brett Lee’s fastest recorded delivery is 157.4 kph and he has not broken the 100mph mark, as yet.

David Norris drools over Leeds summer target Rodrigo De Paul

Former Leeds United star David Norris believes that striking a deal to sign Rodrigo De Paul this summer would be a huge statement from the club.

The Udinese playmaker has been heavily linked with a potential move to Elland Road, since last summer.

Leeds are said to have made a bid last year, only to see it rejected by the Serie A club.

Reports suggest the Italian side are demanding £40m to allow him to leave after a season in which he scored nine league goals.

Leeds enjoyed a fabulous season under Marcelo Bielsa this term, ultimately finishing in the top-half of the Premier League table.

And Norris thinks that signing the 27-year-old would send a real message of intent to the rest of the top-flight this summer, as he believes De Paul is a “serious player”.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Norris said: “I think so. I think that could be the one signing where people do that, because he is a serious player, he’s got great ability and he could make them a better team.

“Because of the reputation he’s got now, and the stature he’ll come with, it’ll make people think ‘Leeds are going to have a go again’.

“Especially after that first season, where they’ve survived really well, competed really well, it’s going to be a little bit harder for them now. Teams will know a little bit about them, found out their style of play, how to stop them a bit more. It’s not just that they’re going to hope to hang on and repeat it.

“That would be a statement to go, no, we’re ready to go again, we want to gatecrash those European spots.”

Per FBref, De Paul ranks in the top 1% of attacking midfielders in Europe for his assists, as well as his dribbles completed, and in the top 2% for progressive carries and expected assists (xA). The second most comparable player to him, per the website, is Manchester City superstar Kevin De Bruyne.

Southampton interested in Benfica defender Nuno Tavares

Southampton are interested in signing Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares, according to O Jogo [via Sport Witness].

The Lowdown: Departures in Hampshire

Looking ahead to the new season, the Saints will undoubtedly be looking towards acquiring reinforcements after an underwhelming 15th-placed finish in the 2020/21 campaign, after which the club issued their retained players list, which heralded some notable absentees.

Squad members such as Jake Hesketh and Josh Sims are among those to move on, although long-serving left-back Ryan Bertrand is the most high-profile departure [Southampton FC]. Set to join Leicester City on a free transfer [Football Insider], he leaves a sizeable void in the left-back area.

Could Nuno Tavares be the man to succeed the England international at St Mary’s?

The Latest: Saints and Napoli interested

The Saints are currently said to be monitoring Tavares alongside Italian giants Napoli [O Jogo, via Sport Witness].

Seemingly, the 21-year-old could be open to a move to the south coast. Southampton are rumoured to have ‘requested information’ on the Portuguese native [O Jogo, via Sport Witness]. Spectacularly, the youngster has fuelled speculation over his future after a video emerged of him complaining over his lack of first-team opportunities ahead of his positional rival Alex Grimaldo [Prime Time Sports].

His next move ‘remains on the table’, signifying there could be some traction to these latest developments [O Jogo, via Sport Witness]

The Verdict: Tavares would be a good signing, if he amends his attitude

Showing competence in attack and defence, Tavares has helped his side to earn eight clean sheets in 2020/21, whilst also completing 1.8 dribbles per game on average [WhoScored].

In terms of playing ability, the 21-year-old would probably fit nicely into the St Mary’s fold this summer. Furthermore, the advantageous nature of his age would mean a near-certainty of high resale value further down the line – he is currently valued at just £6.3m by Transfermarkt.

However, in light of the video about Grimaldo, his attitude needs work, especially in as competitive an environment as the Premier League. If Tavares could prospectively keep a lid on his temper and not land himself in hot water needlessly, he could have a very big future in the game.

In other news, ex-Saints vice-chairman Les Reed lifts the lid on his relationship with the club owner.

Leeds ‘confident’ of signing De Paul

Leeds United are reportedly ‘confident’ of signing Rodrigo de Paul in the summer transfer window, in what could potentially be a club-record deal.

The Lowdown: Constant interest in De Paul

The Whites have been linked with a move for the Udinese midfielder endless times in the last year, with a deal almost coming to fruition back in October.

De Paul may have stayed put in Italy for the time being, but he continues to be tipped to head to Elland Road, with Liverpool also rumoured to be interested in signing him.

The Latest: Leeds ‘confident’ of deal happening

According to the Football Insider, there is growing belief from United sources that Leeds will get a deal for De Paul over the line, with Udinese demanding £37million for his services.

Should the Whites match that amount, it would make the Argentine the club’s most expensive signing in history, with Rodrigo (£27m) currently topping the pile.

The report does state that Udinese could be happy to let De Paul leave for £30million, however, acting as a boost for the Whites.

The Verdict: Ideal summer signing

Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t need to make major changes to his squad this summer, but a sprinkling of stardust is required to make Leeds even more formidable.

De Paul could be just that, enjoying 17 goal involvements in Serie A this season – eight goals and eight assists apiece – and playing an average of 2.4 key passes per game.

That’s more than any Leeds player in the Premier League in 2020/21, with Raphinha (2.1) having the most, highlighting the midfield creativity he could bring to the side.

Palace must regret failed Ilicic move

Back in June 2016, Crystal Palace were linked with a move for Slovenian international Josip Ilicic.

As reported by TuttoSport, as cited by Sport Witness at the time, the Eagles were rivalling the likes of Watford, West Bromwich Albion and even AC Milan for his signature.

Indeed, a move did not come to fruition, with Ilicic remaining with Fiorentina for a further year before making a move to Atalanta. Steve Parish will certainly regret not managing to secure the forward.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-crystal-palace-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more-oftus-cheek-andersen-sakho-vieira” title=”Latest Crystal Palace news, transfer rumours and more…”]

Since being linked with a move to Selhurst Park, the now 33-year-old has been one of the most consistent attackers in Europe.

He has scored a total of 62 goals in all competitions, his best season coming last term as he found the back of the net a total of 21 times in all competitions.

Meanwhile, the 70-cap international has managed to provide a further 43 assists having twice reached the UEFA Champions League with current employers Atalanta.

Ilicic, once rated at a peak of £19.8m, has certainly drawn praise for those performances with Gian Piero Gasperini hailing him as “incredible” after his four-goal haul in a 4-3 win against Valencia in 2020.

Palace could certainly have done with such displays in the time since they were linked with the Slovenian.

For comparison, even the mercurial Wilfried Zaha has not even got close to matching Ilicic’s output having managed just 39 goals and 33 assists in the time since he was linked with a move to Selhurst Park.

It goes without saying then that should Parish have secured his signature in 2016, the Eagles would certainly have improved on their four consecutive bottom-half Premier League finishes since they reportedly considered a swoop for Ilicic.

It is a decision that they will certainly regret to this day.

AND in more news, find out why Ainsley Maitland-Niles could be the perfect signing for the Eagles this summer…
