Newcastle fans reflect on "embarrassing" Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer incident

Thursday marked 15 years since the infamous fight between Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer, and loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to George Caulkin’s post about the incident.

“The day the fists flew, the day it all fell apart for Newcastle United,” Caulkin described in a piece for The Athletic, detailing perhaps one of the craziest matches in Premier League history.

After all, who needs the Magpies’ epic 4-4 comeback against Arsenal or Manchester City’s 6-1 demolition of Manchester United when you can witness three of the most bizarre red cards of all time.

Indeed, then-manager Graeme Souness could only watch on as his side fell to pieces in a 3-0 loss to Aston Villa. Steven Taylor was the first man sent off for a goal-saving handball, after which he tried to con the referee in hilarious fashion.

An argument over Dyer not passing the ball to Bowyer then escalated, with the latter approaching Dyer in what the Charlton manager later described as a “moment of madness”.

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer jumps to the defence of Naby Sarr

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has jumped to the defence of Naby Sarr, who has been widely criticised for his performance against Millwall, as reported by London News Online.

What did he say?

Sarr had a bit of a shocker against Millwall, as the Lions’ goals in their 2-1 win came from the 26-year-old being easily beaten in the air from set-piece deliveries.

Fans were far from impressed with him on social media following the game, feeling that he cost them the points on the day.

However, Sarr, who recently got his first call-up to the Senegal national team, has received the public support of Bowyer: “We have to remember how far he has come, when I first took over 18 months ago he was in a bad place.

“Yeah, it was a shame he was at fault [against Millwall] but he has played a lot of games for us.

“So you can’t just get caught up in that game. All players make mistakes at one time or another.

“Once you come away from it and have had a couple of days to calm down you have to look at the bigger picture, that’s all I’d say. And that is how far he has come in the time that I’ve been in charge.”

Unacceptable form

Regardless of whether or not Sarr has improved, Charlton can’t afford for the centre-back to carry on putting in performances like the one against Millwall.

He did provide the assist for Jonathan Leko’s goal, but his defensive showing was very suspect during the game, as shown below:

It should also be noted that the 26-year-old was hooked off at half time in the previous match against Preston North End, having failed to make a tackle, interception or clearance.

The defender has shown that he can give solid performances in the Championship, as in October he was given a WhoScored rating of 8.4 in Charlton’s 3-0 win over Derby County.

This came from a performance in which he made 6 clearances, 1 tackle, 3 clearances and scored a goal.

He needs to get back to defensively solid performances like this to prevent further questions being asked about his place in the team.

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez should not be in the England squad

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Clearly, the tensions are running high between Liverpool and Manchester City players following the Reds’ 3-1 victory over the Citizens.

In the England camp, there was an incident involving Joe Gomez and Raheem Sterling. The latter had a bee in his bonnet with the Anfield outfit’s defender following their clash on Sunday, and asked him if he thought he was “the big man”.

He is also said to have attempted to get him in a headlock. As such, he will play no part for the Three Lions against Montenegro on Thursday.

A lot of the discourse since has been aimed at Sterling’s side of the situation. It seems, though, that few have questioned why Gomez is even in the squad from a footballing point of view.

The 22-year-old may be a popular player for Southgate – he has seven caps under the current boss – but it is hard to justify his inclusion. So far this campaign, he has made just seven starts in all competitions. In those matches, Jurgen Klopp’s side have conceded 13.

England may not be blessed with centre-backs, but there are surely some who are more worthy at this current time.

The one that stands out the most is Chris Smalling, who is excelling at AS Roma on loan from Manchester United. He has an average WhoScored rating of 7.26 in Serie A, having played ten matches in all competitions already. James Tarkowski, who has helped Burnley keep four clean sheets in the first 12 matches of the campaign, is another name to consider.

Southgate has previously mentioned he is unhappy with the number of English players starting regularly, yet he has ignored those who are in favour of one who has spent most of the campaign on the bench.

He has the potential to become a star player, but right now, £31.5m-valued Gomez does not deserve a place in the squad.

Spurs fans desperate for club to sign Alex Grimaldo

Tottenham Hotspur fans are desperate for the club to sign Alex Grimaldo from Benfica.

Calciomercato, via A Bola, claim that Spurs are among a number of clubs chasing the left-back, with Arsenal and Napoli also interested.

And fans have been left rather excited by the news of their club’s interest.

A Spain U21 international, Grimaldo has made 131 appearances for Benfica, scoring 11 goals and registering 26 assists.

This season already, the former Barcelona B man has one goal and four assists to his name in 14 outings.

Indeed, Spurs have struggled at the start of the 2019/20 campaign and Danny Rose has looked out of his depth at times at left-back, picking up five yellow cards in just nine games and averaging 1.6 fouls per game from just 1.8 tackles, per WhoScored.

A number of supporters believe Grimaldo, who is reportedly valued at €40m (£34.4m) is exactly what Tottenham need as they approach the transfer window.

Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino in Catch-22 situation as he looks to improve form

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It is clear that things aren’t going well for Tottenham at the moment, and to make matters worse there is no clear solution to their problems.

Mauricio Pochettino has been unable to control matters on and off the pitch in recent weeks as player discontent seems rife, and that has led to some shocking results.

Several key players are allegedly unhappy, leading some to make movements to leave, and such ill-feeling is having an adverse effect on performances, with one win in five games.

Christian Eriksen, for example, has made no secret of his desire to depart for Real Madrid, and the Dane has subsequently returned just one goal and one assist in 11 appearances.

As a result, Pochettino could be tempted to grant young players more opportunities. He has done so in the recent past with Juan Foyth, Kyle Walker-Peters and Oliver Skipp examples of recent breakthroughs, but now he may feel he has to play them more often out of necessity.

Youngsters often have the hunger and desire to impress, showing effort and commitment in the process, and that could lead the Argentine to utilise them more often.

However, doing so risks Spurs’ chances of success this campaign, particularly their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League for a fifth consecutive season.

It is a lot to ask a young player to perform at a consistent level over the course of 30-40 games, particularly to the standards set by senior players over the past few years, and it would mark a change in Tottenham’s strategy to bed in youngsters gradually.

Pochettino has seemingly already lost a little faith in Walker-Peters, for example, who has vanished from the matchday squad on his return from injury having started the first three league games of the season.

Despite that, it is a course of action that would probably sit well with Tottenham fans, with some calling for Foyth and Walker-Peters to come into the side in the hope that getting rid of “uncommitted” players improves a defence which has conceded 11 goals in the previous three matches.

Pochettino must therefore decide the best course of action to take, and quickly, as the team’s current form means they would likely miss out on the Champions League qualification, and that could be critical to the club long-term.

Spurs spent big in the summer to keep up with their top-six rivals, but given they offloaded an estimated £1 billion on their new stadium they need all the income they can garner – and the Champions League is key to that.

Equally important is maintaining their appeal to players who may be more likely to overlook them in favour of a rival due to the comparative club sizes and the wages made available to them.

Sheffield Wednesday fans hail Massimo Luongo after goalscoring performance

Sheffield Wednesday got back on track with three points on Saturday afternoon following their first defeat of the season under new boss Garry Monk in midweek.

Massimo Luongo’s goal in his first start for the club was enough to separate the Owls from Wigan Athletic, meaning they move to within one point of a playoff spot.

The Australian’s strike came just before the hour mark when he slammed home from 15 yards out from Adam Reach’s cut-back pass.

Wigan could have equalised minutes later when Kieffer Moore’s header was directed onto the crossbar by Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

The home side also had a potential Steven Fletcher goal ruled out for offside.

Luongo has had to wait for his opportunity under Monk, making just five appearances from the bench this season, and Sam Hutchinson’s suspension brought that chance on Saturday.

Fans were clearly impressed with what they saw as they took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his performance.

One supporter claimed that Luongo showed why he should always be starting games while another said his finish was ‘pure class.’

The midfielder has been capped 43 times for Australia and made the move to Hillsborough in the summer, joining from Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee.

Other fans described him as ‘magic’ and ‘different class.’

Watford sack manager Javi Gracia and appoint Quique Sanchez Flores

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Watford have sacked manager Javi Gracia and reappointed Quique Sanchez Flores to replace him.

What’s the word?

The Hornets are currently rock-bottom of the Premier League, having drawn one and lost three of their opening four games; they drew 1-1 with Newcastle United last time out following successive losses to Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and West Ham United.

The Hornets board have subsequently taken action by sacking Gracia, who guided the club to an 11th-placed finish last season as well as to the FA Cup final, though they were beaten 6-0 by Manchester City.

Flores has been appointed as his successor; he managed the club in the 2015/16 campaign as they finished 13th.

A bizarre move

This is a bit of a weird one from Watford.

They have not taken a step forward with the reappointment of a manager who took the club to a worse finish than that achieved in 2018/19.

One feels that Gracia deserved some time, particularly after their excellent FA Cup run.

But the club have seen differently and, thus, there is pressure on the club to turn it around.

That is all well and good but their next two games come against Arsenal and City.

Good luck, Quique.

Southampton will be surprised by Alfie Jones’ versatility at Gillingham

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

Since joining Gillingham on loan back at the start of July, young Southampton prospect Alfie Jones has enjoyed a busy time at the Priestfield Stadium.

Naturally a centre-back, Jones has been deployed in numerous positions by Steve Jones, one of which may catch Ralph Hasenhuttl’s attention back at St Mary’s.

The 21-year-old has appeared at centre-back, defensive midfield and at centre midfield for the Gills, and seems to be doing so in impressive fashion.

Jones was named in the WhoScored League One Team of the Week for his efforts recently, standing proud as the fourth-highest rated player in the XI.

He is certainly doing very well in a Gillingham shirt across a number of positions, but it is his ability to play in a defensive midfield position that should catch Hasenhuttl’s eye.

Some Saints supporters on Twitter were certainly keen for a new DM at the club this summer after hearing news of Victor Wanyama’s availability, with one saying that he thinks a new midfielder is needed more than a new defender.

Another said that the back four ‘needs the extra protection’ that a DM would offer, and in Jones’ sudden emergence as a capable defensive midfielder, Hasenhuttl may now have an option on his hands in that position that he wouldn’t have expected.

The youngster has recorded some pretty impressive stats so far in League One this season, in areas that you would feel are pivotal for a deep-lying player to be excelling in.

Jones has won 3.3 aerial duels per game so far this season, whilst also winning 2.3 tackles.

His efforts in midfield and at centre-back for the Gills have seen him earn one Man of the Match award from his six League One appearances, and there is no doubting that he has presented his parent club with an interesting potential option.
