West Ham target AC Milan player Suso in bid to add creativity to squad

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Daily Mail, West Ham United are interested in AC Milan’s Suso as Manuel Pellegrini looks to make further additions to his attacking options.

What’s the story?

The Hammers added Pablo Fornals over the summer but are apparently still keen on adding further creativity to the side, which is understandable given a return of just 11 goals in nine league games.

As a result, they have reportedly pinpointed Suso as a player who could solve their problems, and the fact he could be available after a disappointing start to the season may be what has sparked the interest.

Suso has a foreign club release clause of £36m which may make such a move difficult, but the fact he is reportedly keen on a move means it is a deal which could happen.

Although West Ham have a number of attacking midfielders in Manuel Lanzini, Felipe Anderson and Pablo Fornals, each has failed to support Sebastien Haller sufficiently this season.

They have just six assists between them and as a result the Hammers have often seemed to lack ideas in attack, struggling to break down organised sides like Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

That is where Suso could be key.

He is a great crosser of the ball and his vision could be vital to Pellegrini, with 1.6 successful crosses and 2.8 key passes per game last term. He may have struggled this season with zero goals and one assist in eight games, with fan opinion seeming to turn against him, but he has proved previosuly that he has the quality to improve West Ham.

AC Milan fan reaction wanting him to leave is evidence of that:

In 2018/19 he scored seven goals and assisted 10, and judging by his start this season Anderson is unlikely to reach those figures. The Brazilian is beginning to disappoint fans and therefore a change could be needed – with Susi providing Pellegrini with an opportunity to breathe fresh life into the West Ham final third.

He is still only 25, too, and therefore a boost in confidence and a change in scenery could allow him to return to his best form, particularly as Pellegrini is a manager who bases his philosophy on players playing with belief and freedom.

Anderson’s form is a worry, with only 77% pass accuracy in the Premier League as well as a reduction in his average key passes, from 1.8 in 2018/19 to 1.5 this term.

That underlines the improvement Suso would likely bring to the squad, and in turn it could lead to West Ham, and Haller, scoring more.

West Ham should give Felipe Anderson a free role to get the best out of him

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Despite West Ham starting the season positively Felipe Anderson has come under fire from some fans recently, but there could be a solution available to bring the best out of him.

On the chalkboard

The Brazilian was described by Jamie Carragher as the Hammers’ best player on Sky Sports’ coverage of West Ham vs Crystal Palace, and if Manuel Pellegrini can get him playing at his best on a consistent basis – such as when he scored four Premier League goals in December 2018 – then his side could challenge in the upper echelons of the league.

In the current set-up he often fails to support Sebastien Haller because he plays wide and is burdened with defensive responsibility, but if the Chilean can find a way to free him up then his best performances should begin to show.

So far this season he is yet to get on the scoresheet and has instead been part of a midfield that has been accused of not providing service to Haller, which is a reason why the Hammers have scored only 11 goals in eight league games.

However, since Pellegrini is a manager who hasn’t mixed up his preferred formation since arriving in east London, it is instead personnel that will need altering, and that means players such as Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals could drop out, but with a combined total of three goals and assists between them, that may be another positive.

Free role

With that under consideration, Pellegrini should revert back to a successful system he sometimes utilised during his spell as manager of Manchester City, playing two deep centre midfielders with two wide players in front of them, and two strikers looking to feed off them.

West Ham have the personnel to succeed with that style and once Michail Antonio returns the Irons boss should look to implement it.

With him and Andriy Yarmolenko on either wing the Hammers would have a goalscoring threat from out wide, but perhaps more importantly, it would allow Anderson to float in the position in and around Haller, linking up with the striker and roaming out wide when necessary.

His dribbling success of 2.3 per game shows he has an ability to receive the ball and play on the turn, allowing him to run at the opposition, and if he takes up various positions around the pitch and becomes difficult to track, then he should have joy in the opposition’s final third.

If he can improve his shooting he could provide a threat from distance and add an unpredictable nature to his game, as his average of 1.7 key passes per game shows he can create chances for Haller too.

Everton crumbling, but loanee Fraser Hornby continues to flourish in Belgium

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

Everton endured their fifth defeat of this Premier League season over the weekend, losing 1-0 to Burnley. This embarrassing defeat has now sent Marco Silva’s squad into the relegation zone after just eight games.

The Toffees have endured poor performances across the field for most of this season, with the club now conceding 12 goals in these eight fixtures and scoring just six – the third-lowest in the league. Right now, it is just not happening for Everton’s forward men, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, and Bernard the only players to hit the back of the net in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, the likes of Moise Kean, Cenk Tosun, and Theo Walcott have not even looked like scoring, with Kean averaging just 1.1 shots per game in the league since joining from Juventus.

However, one man with ties to the club has been comfortable in front of goal this season – loanee Fraser Hornby. The 20-year-old joined KV Kortrijk at the start of the season and has so far scored three times in four appearances for the Belgian top-flight side.

The striker has also impressed with Scotland over the years, scoring six times in 10 outings for the U21s. The 6 foot 3 forward can play a variety of roles, similar to that of Richarlison. As demonstrated by Transfermarkt, Hornby has played in every role across the forward line, whilst also providing the capabilities to play as an attacking midfielder and a central midfielder.

In adding such versatility to the Toffees’ academy sides, he has netted an impressive 16 goals in 20 appearances for the U18s, and then added a further eight to his resume in 33 outings for the U23s.

The times right now are worrying for the Merseyside club, with the forward man lacking goals at an alarming rate. But not just this, Kortrijk also have an option to buy Hornby at the end of the season, meaning Everton could lose a potential future attacking threat.

The English-born has proved his goalscoring ability along with his incredible versatility over the years, and attributes as such should never be overlooked. Throw into the mix that he is just 20, and perhaps the club have a future superstar on their hands.

Should Hornby return, he may not become a Goodison Park hero immediately. However, it almost goes without saying that whoever is in charge at Everton simply cannot let him leave in the club’s current circumstances.

Liverpool fans take a dig at Bobby Duncan amid exit claims

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken a dig at 18-year-old Bobby Duncan amid claims that he wants to leave the club.

The Daily Mail suggests that he is frustrated by his lack of opportunities within the senior team and could move on as a result.

The same report claims Fiorentina are interested in taking him on loan.

Duncan appeared in pre-season for the Reds but hasn’t featured in competitive action yet.

The fact he reportedly wants to move on, however, hasn’t been taken too kindly by some supporters. One called him a narcissist whilst another said his head was too big for his own good.

It didn’t appear as though too many supporters were reluctant to see him depart. One simply told the teenager to get out of the club as a further fan said to let him go.

Duncan has an impressive record at youth level for the Reds, scoring 23 goals in 26 matches for Liverpool’s U18 side.

Unfortunately for him though he is quite far down the pecking order. As well as trying to get ahead of Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah, he also needs to beat Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster to a place.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

So after an entire summer of trying to get their man, Harry Maguire’s first few weeks at Manchester United have been a resounding success.

The England international enjoyed an impressive Premier League debut for his new side, helping the team clinch a clean sheet in a 4-0 thrashing of rivals Chelsea.

Whilst the 26-year-old’s impact is already being felt on the football pitch, reports are indicating that the centre-back is having an equally influential effect off it too.

According to The Sun, Maguire is “already emerging” as United’s leader and a club source has revealed how the former Leicester star has given the back-four “renewed confidence”.

After hearing about Maguire’s reported impact on the team, United fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the club’s summer signing.

Arsenal fans react to update on former target Malcom

[ad_pod ]

Having relied on just Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi to provide the side with width last season, it has been no surprise to see Unai Emery look to sign a new winger this summer.

Reports had suggested the Gunners were very much interested in making a move for Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser, whilst it was also claimed recently that the north London side had tabled a £40m bid for Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.

One man who was seemingly on Arsenal’s radar before, Malcom, is now another name being linked with a move to the Emirates this summer.

Indeed, an update from Football.London claims that the Gunners would have to commit to a mandatory purchase option to sign him on loan and that Barcelona would be looking to recoup the full £36.5m they originally paid Bordeaux for the 22 year-old.

After hearing the news, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the demands being placed on potentially signing Malcom.

Some Gunners supporters hearkened back to their pursuit of Denis Suarez and how a loan deal for the Spaniard became increasingly protracted before they got their man.

Indeed, a few fans lamented the fact that despite being offered a “good deal”, their financial restrictions could potentially see them missing out on their target.

Winks & Davies sign new deals at Tottenham

Harry Winks and Ben Davies have signed new contracts at Tottenham Hotspur, the club have confirmed.

What’s the word?

The midfielder and the defender have both committed their futures to the club until 2024.

Winks has become a first-team star under Mauricio Pochettino, making a total of 102 appearances for the club, while Davies has enjoyed steady progress since joining from Swansea City in 2014.

The Wales international has made 168 appearances for the club in total and played 40 times in all competitions last season.

Winks, an England international who has won three caps, struggled with injury in 2018/19 but made 41 appearances; he also played 66 minutes in the Champions League final against Liverpool.

A solid double deal

Winks’ future is secure at the club and that feels like a major statement.

The Englishman has emerged as one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most trusted lieutenants on the pitch and he is still only 23.

The best, then, is yet to come, and it speaks to him retaining a high-profile role next season after the signing of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon.

Davies, meanwhile, is a solid full-back who does his job with a minimum of fuss.

He may not be as spectacular as Danny Rose, who is a more forward-thinking left-back, but he also offers the versatility to drop into central defence as and when Spurs require him to do so.

He is nothing short of a solid hand, and this deal rewards his loyalty if nothing else.

Spurs fans, then, can rest assured that two of their most useful squad players will be remaining in north London.

Everton fans react as Kieran Phillips signs first professional deal

[ad_pod ]

Everton announced on Friday that teenage forward Kieran Phillips has signed his first professional contract with the Merseyside giants.

Phillips, who has penned a one-year deal until the end of the 2019-20 campaign, scored 12 times in 11 appearances in the Under-18 Premier League (North) last term.

In an interview, the 19-year-old revealed that he would be targeting a spot in the club’s double-winning Under-23 side in the new season.

It remains to be seen whether Phillips can become a future first-team star at Goodison Park.

However, the fact that the attacker struck 12 times in just 11 games in the Under-18 Premier League (North) last term shows that he certainly has talent at his disposal, and he’s a player you’d expect Marco Silva to keep a close eye on.
