Torino reject massive West Ham bid for Belotti

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Torino have rejected a €60m (£54m) bid from West Ham United for Andrea Belotti, per Tuttosport.

What’s the word?

The Hammers are thin in the striking department after selling Marko Arnautovic to Shanghai SIPG and also allowing Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez to leave the club.

They currently have Javier Hernandez and Jordan Hugill as their forward options.

And the report claims that Belotti was the subject of a big bid as the club looked to solve their forward crisis.

The offer was swiftly rejected, however, with Torino keen to keep a player who has scored 70 goals in 148 games for the club.

Cheaper option found

A deal for Belotti already appears to be dead in the water after West Ham reached an agreement to sign Sebastian Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Bundesliga club confirmed on Tuesday that he is set to undergo a medical with the Irons before a move that Football FanCast sources understand could cost as much as £50m.

Belotti, of course, would have been an intriguing option for Pellegrini’s men, and he has a solid record of goalscoring.

The Torino star scored 17 goals in all competitions last season; he netted 13 in 35 as he battled injury woes in 2017/18 and in 2016/17, when he played the majority of games throughout the season, he netted 28 in 38.

But a move for Haller is now in the advanced stages and one cannot imagine the club signing both – it would come to an outlay of over £100m.

The Frenchman is 25 and has been a consistent forward at both Frankfurt – where he has scored 33 goals in 77 games while providing 19 assists – and FC Utrecht, where he netted 51 goals in 98 outings.

Haller is a different type of forward to Belotti; the latter usually plays up top on his own, while the former partnered Luka Jovic in the Bundesliga last season.

Neither have played in the Premier League, though, and it appears that the Irons have done a deal for the cheaper option, in the hope that he will prove value for money.

Belotti may actually be a more proven option – he has won 22 caps for Italy and has played over 170 games in Serie A while Haller has yet to be capped by France and has 60 Bundesliga outings under his belt.

Pellegrini, though, will be praying that he has made the right choice as the Hammers look to improve on last season’s 10th-placed finish.

Transfer Focus: Gerrard’s targeting of another young, hungry player bodes well for Rangers’ future

[ad_pod ]

Rangers are set to return with a third bid for Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

The paper reckon that bids of £400,000 and £500,000 lodged by the Ibrox outfit have been rejected over the last week, but the Gers are determined to get their man and will return with an improved offer.

The report states the English League Two outfit are eager to spark a bidding war for the centre-back, with clubs such as Wigan, Stoke and Derby all said to be interested.

Rangers are confident of completing a deal, but Edmundson’s side are holding out for a fee of around £1m according to the paper, meaning the recruitment team at Ibrox may have to double their best offer so far.

Gerrard wants players with something to prove

Edmundson is clearly a player that manager Steven Gerrard is a fan of or the Gers wouldn’t be so persistent trying to bring him to Glasgow.

Still just 21 years of age, if he does arrive at Ibrox it would mean that two of the three centre-backs at Rangers are of a young age, with Nikola Katic still only 22 himself.

The Oldham man reportedly handed in a transfer request to escape League Two so clearly has big ambitions to play at a higher level and having that kind of desire is something Gerrard will need if his team are to push for major honours.

Young and hungry is the way to go

Other young players like Jake Hastie and Glen Kamara have also committed their futures to the club recently and although Gerrard has peppered experience throughout the team with players such as Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis, it’s clear he wants to build and develop his own players as a priority.

That will only benefit Rangers further down the line – first by creating a team that has grown and improved together, but also by ensuring the club can cash in on talents at their peak value.

It’s a strategy that has paid off massively for Celtic in recent years and by emulating it the Gers can start to close the gap on their Glasgow rivals.

Benteke will have his head in his hands as Palace linked with assist-shy Josh Murphy

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace and their Premier League rivals Burnley have both set their sights on signing Cardiff City winger Josh Murphy this summer if the Bluebirds go down, and Eagles striker Christian Benteke will surely have his head in his hands at the report.

What’s the word, then?

Well, apparently the south London outfit have been impressed with what they have seen from the 24-year-old this term, despite the Welsh side’s struggles at the foot of the division and the fact he hasn’t been a regular in the starting XI under Neil Warnock.

Football Insider report that Palace are ready to pounce for the attacker who cost £11m from Norwich City last summer, and with Cardiff effectively needing to take six points from their remaining two fixtures relegation is looking almost nailed on.

Roy Hodgson and his men can actually stick the final nail in the coffin when they travel to the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, which would in turn boost their chances of getting Murphy.

Bad news for Benteke

While the wide man seems like a typical Palace signing on paper, Christian Benteke will be tearing his hair out.

Should Crystal Palace keep hold of Max Meyer this summer? Harvey Jones discusses in the video below…

The low on confidence centre-forward, who has been a regular starter in recent weeks and did shine in the win at Arsenal, is in desperate need of a winger who can put chances on a plate to help him get on the goal trail.

Murphy’s stats this season hardly suggest that he is the man to do that, given he has one assist in 27 top-flight outings.

At 24 years of age he still has time on his side to become the finished article at this level, but he is far from at that point as things stand.

With little over a year left on his contract at Selhurst Park and with potential suitors likely being difficult to find this summer, Benteke could easily be with Palace next term.

It is clear to see that he needs consistent wingers to bring the best out of him, and Murphy simply doesn’t fit the bill.

Arsenal: If that was to be Aaron Ramsey’s last games, it was the perfect result to go out on

On a night where Arsenal pulled off one of their greatest European results in recent memory, there was one stain on what was a memorable game.

33 minutes in Aaron Ramsey pulled up on the pitch feeling his thigh, and the Welshman was instantly replaced by Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Unai Emery later confirmed after the match that the midfielder had suffered a muscular injury and that the Juventus-bound fan-favourite will be out for a few weeks.

With hamstring injuries taking roughly four to six weeks to fully recover from, last night could have been the last time Arsenal fans have seen the 28-year-old in red and white colours.

No Arsenal fan or football supporter, in general, wanted to see the former Cardiff City man’s last game for the club be one where he is forced off injured, cutting his seasons short but had it not been for the result the occasion would not have been more damming.

This was a game where Arsenal did what many thought was unthinkable, go to Napoli and control the game on their terms. The Gunners were the better team from the first whistle to the last, and in doing so have made themselves the favourite for the Europa League.

With a semi-final series against Valencia just two weeks away, Arsenal can’t mourn the loss of Ramsey, they must regroup and continue to grind out the results they need that can get them back into the Champions League as well as achieve European silverware.

Ramsey’s injury and likely abrupt end to the season is the last thing Arsenal fans wanted to see, but if there was any game, performance or result it was to occur on, last night’s win over Napoli was just the occasion to do it.

Arsenal fans, will Ramsey return in time before the end of the season? Let us know!

Crystal Palace eyeing £15m move for Stoke stopper Jack Butland

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace are eyeing a £15m move to sign Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland, amid doubts over the future of Spanish keeper Vicente Guaita as reported by The Sun.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Guaita only arrived at the club in the summer after initially signing a pre-contract agreement back in January of last year, but the Eagles have some doubts over his long-term commitment to the club which could see him heading back to Spain.

Butland stayed loyal to the Potters despite their relegation to the Championship, but may not want to spend a second consecutive season outside of the top-flight with Stoke extremely unlikely to win promotion this season.

As a result, Palace, who have been keeping tabs on the situation, could swoop in to sign the England international who would be required to take a pay cut if he were to spend another season in the second tier.

A waste of money for Palace?

It has been reported as recently as January that the south London-based club have limited funds, and could only afford to bring Michy Batshuayi in on a loan deal whilst also signing little-known Brazilian keeper Lucas Perri on a temporary deal with an option to buy.

Along with Perri, who is yet to make an appearance but can be signed for what one would assume will be a minimal fee, Palace have Wales international Wayne Hennessey on their books, along with veteran glovesman Julian Speroni.

Hennessey started against Burnley last time out, and had been Roy Hodgson’s number one last season until Guaita’s arrival, so he is clearly trusted.

The fact that Palace have Hennessey, and will potentially have Perri makes any deal for 25-year-old Butland seem like a strange one, especially at such a huge cost. When you consider the problem up top, which is currently being covered up temporarily by Batshuayi’s brilliance, any decision to spend such a sum on a goalkeeper would be a baffling one.
