Everton: Brown claims Ferguson was key to Calvert-Lewin transformation

Michael Brown has made a rather big claim that Duncan Ferguson has been key to the transformation of Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Everton.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Leeds midfielder talked about the positive impact that the former Toffees striker had on Calvert-Lewin when he was briefly in charge at Goodison Park before the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti, saying:

“I must say, when Duncan Ferguson was the boss he sort of stood up for him in times of difficulty, backed him and now that bit of confidence has certainly looked good.

“I think it was a big turning point. There was that uncertainty whether he played, whether he didn’t, what type of role – Duncan Ferguson just said this is where you are, you’re my man up front, give him that confidence by coming out and saying it.

“He’s not looked back, has he?”

Calvert-Lewin was not prolific before Ferguson

Prior to 2019/20 when Ferguson took charge midway through the campaign after the sacking of Marco Silva, Calvert-Lewin only managed to score 17 goals in 93 games in all competitions for the Merseyside club (Transfermarkt).

However, in Ferguson’s first match in charge of the Toffees against Chelsea last December, the future England international scored twice, suggesting that the 48-year-old had an immediate impact on Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin is now more prolific

Indeed, Calvert-Lewin has now showed himself to be a prolific striker since the appointments of Ferguson and now Carlo Ancelotti.

Under the Italian so far, the 23-year old has scored no fewer than 18 times in 28 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt), proving to be far more prolific than he had been before Ferguson took temporary charge towards the end of 2019.

Calvert-Lewin has now been capped by England

Indeed, Calvert-Lewin has also now been capped by the senior England national team, and if that was not already enough of an honour, he scored on his debut for Gareth Southgate’s side against Wales in a friendly for the Three Lions at Wembley this month.

Nonetheless, he has certainly had a transformation at Everton since playing under Ferguson, as Brown claims.

Southampton interest in Toby Savin could spell the end of Angus Gunn

Southampton are currently keeping their eye on Accrington Stanley shot-stopper Toby Savin as they head into the January window. According to Football Insider, the Saints are keen on the rising star and have already planned to line up an offer for his services.

The England youth international only recently penned a new three-year deal with the League One side, but there’s no doubt that he would be extremely tempted by Premier League football. Indeed, moving to the south coast would also do wonders for Savin’s growth, learning from first choice goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and veteran Fraser Forster.

With no Transfermarkt value yet, the Saints could strike a very cheap deal for the 20-year-old who could become one for the future at St Mary’s. However, it would likely spell the end of Angus Gunn’s time with the club.

Bad news for Gunn

The Norwich-born ‘keeper signed for Southampton two years ago for a fee of £13.5million, an amount the club will be wishing they hadn’t spent.

Gunn has had far from the dream start with the Saints, making just 22 Premier League appearances since 2018 and conceding a worrying 43 goals in those games (via Transfermarkt). It seems already as though he is not part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans moving forward, after he was shipped out on loan to Stoke City this summer.

He made his Potters debut on Tuesday against Swansea City and was hauled off the pitch at half-time after conceding their first goal of the day. His start to life in the Championship is also not exactly how he had planned.

Contrastingly, 20-year-old Savin has proven himself to be a strong character in between the sticks. The 6 ft 3 powerhouse has an average of 3.7 saves per match so far after his most recent display against Fleetwood Town saw him make an impressive six.

The youngster has also made four high claims in his last three appearances and has shown he is comfortable making important saves from inside the box (via Sofascore). Having already proved his ability to work under pressure, he could be a very fine signing for Hasenhuttl, who is looking to keep Southampton on their winning streak.

Adding a young goalkeeper to the ranks as someone to build and rely on in the future would be very smart January business for the Saints, but it would likely spell the end of the disappointing Gunn.

Tottenham Hotspur: Juan Foyth set to leave Spurs ‘imminently’ as Leeds United enter negotiations

Tottenham Hotspur defender Juan Foyth is set to leave north London ‘imminently’, according to reports from Italy.

Leeds United are interested in signing the 22-year-old defender, who was once considered a Mauricio Pochettino prodigy. Foyth has fallen out of favour with his successor as he has featured just twice for Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese took over from Pochettino in November.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, as relayed by Ricky Sacks, both clubs are hoping to reach an agreement of a fee somewhere in the region of £10m-£12m and are confident that they can agree terms for the Argentine in the coming days.

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa is keen to bolster his squad as he prepares for the club’s return to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years and it seems that he is one step closer to getting his wish as regards Foyth.

Bielsa feels that his fellow countryman can strengthen his newly-promoted squad and he is keen to sign the versatile player this summer as it is unlikely that the Lilywhites will stand in his way, so the defender could be set to leave north London.

Mourinho wants to replace Foyth with Freiburg’s Robin Koch and the Argentina international is considered surplus to requirements as a result.

Bielsa wants to recruit his compatriot as he believes he can get the best out of him, which is something Mourinho has failed to do so far. The maverick Leeds manager has earned a reputation for turning young talent into top-class players and Daniel Levy may decide to insert either a buy-back or sell-on clause into Foyht’s contract.

The Spurs chairman should sell the Argentine to raise funds for other summer signings after he failed to register a goal or assist in the Premier League last term.

Newcastle fans fuming after Amanda Staveley update

Just when reports had suggested that Newcastle’s proposed takeover was finally heading to a promising conclusion, another spanner has been thrown into the works.

According to The Daily Mirror, Amanda Staveley will be involved in a High Court case with Barclays, as she sues them for a reported £1.6bn after accusing them of “deceit after the bank unfairly favoured Qatari investors over PCP as the bank looked to avoid a government bail-out and raise £7.3 billion in cash during the 2008 banking crisis”.

Can you name every one of the Magpies’ top goalscorers from the past 15 seasons? It’s a tricky one…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report claims that Staveley was hoping Newcastle’s takeover would have gone through well before the start of the legal case, and that this is the kind of “adverse publicity” that they could do without at the moment.

And after hearing about the report, fans of the Tyneside club flooded to Twitter to share their reactions to the news.

A couple of Newcastle fans admitted that they have run out of patience, and are just “fed up” with the takeover dragging out and turning into a saga.

A few fans appeared to have completely lost confidence in the takeover even happening, with one supporter declaring it as “dead” and that it is time to move on.

It says it all about how long this takeover process has been, that The Daily Mirror claim that Staveley expected it all to go through long before the start of her High Court case.

But with the Premier League trying to take their time over doing their due diligence, the Magpies face the prospect of heading into the top-flight’s restart this month, with all this uncertainty hovering above them.

It’s hardly the ideal scenario for Steve Bruce and the players, and one that has understandably left many Newcastle fans frustrated.

Crystal Palace: Fans discuss whether club let Stan Collymore go too early

A lot of Crystal Palace fans are discussing Stan Collymore after a fan made a point about the player after seeing his highlightsÂin a victory when he played for Nottingham Forest.

FYPFanzine commented on the player, saying: “Watching this does make you wonder how Palace had let Collymore go just three years previously.”

After nearly two years of learning his trade as an understudy to the prolific Crystal Palace partnership of Mark Bright and Ian Wright, Collymore dropped down a division in the autumn of 1992 to sign for Southend United and there scored 18 goals in 33 games to help keep the club in Division One.

He would later move to Nottingham Forest and then in 1995 score a great goal in a 2-1 victory against his old club Crystal Palace.

His career continued to be successful as he moved to Liverpool, scoring 35 goals in 81 games, via LFChistory.net, but failed to pick up any silverware. The attacker is now a pundit, both online and on the radio.

It would have been interesting whether the forward would have had a similar rise in his career had he stayed at Selhurst Park.

Here is what fans had to say about the player:

Alasdair Gold reveals why Troy Parrott could play a lot more

According to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold, Tottenham starlet Troy Parrott could see a lot more first-team action due to a proposed change to the Premier League’s rules.

What did he say?

With English football gearing up for a restart next month, one of the potential talking points has surrounded whether the Premier League will allow for an increase to the usual three substitutions that you can make during a match, as a result of maintaining player fitness.

And now, Gold has suggested that if the rule does get tweaked, then Parrott could indeed be one of the main beneficiaries, so as long as he impresses Jose Mourinho during these upcoming weeks.

Is it Mido or Pedro Mendes? This Spurs quiz will separate the loyal from the fake…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “You’d hope so. Much depends on how much he impresses Mourinho during these weeks before the season resumes, if it does.

“The Spurs boss likes to make a point and if he still feels the young Irishman isn’t ready then he won’t hesitate to show that and Parrott has to get on the bench in the first place with a fully fit set of attacking options.”

Opportunity

If clubs are allowed to make five substitutes, then Parrott will surely have no better chance to showcase his potential to Mourinho than now.

The Spurs boss will have greater scope to be more flexible with the way he uses his players off the bench, and that should allow Parrott the opportunity to get on to the pitch more often.

Of course, the latest injury news on the striker suggests that he will miss the start of the Premier League’s restart, but the north Londoners have confirmed that he will be returning to training later in June.

Once he gets back to full fitness, it will be up to Parrott to show why Mourinho deserves to trust him more.
