PCB urged to make long-term plans to play in UAE

The Emirates Cricket Board chief has urged the PCB to make longer-term plans to host matches in the UAE

ESPNcricinfo staff29-May-2011The Emirates Cricket Board chief, Dilawar Mani, has urged the PCB to make longer-term plans to host matches in the UAE. On the Pakistan board’s request, the UAE board will send a business plan with regards to hosting Pakistan’s home series against Sri Lanka and England, which are to be played this season according to the Future Tours Programme. Mani, however, said planning the series so close to their commencement impacted the financial gains possible from it.”I can confirm that the PCB has once again contacted us for the business plan to host their series and we will reply in the next two weeks,” Mani told . “The PCB wants to deal with us on a series-by-series basis and, at times, last minute. This is not normal and leads to them making financial losses. You can’t come up with a good sponsor on a very short notice. I urge them to come up with the correct strategy and plan the series well in advance so that it helps them.”Mani’s comments come at a time when the PCB is caught between a variety of factors in making a decision on home series. Foremost is the government of Pakistan’s desire to see international cricket return to the country, a situation senior board officials will privately concede is impossible at present. The PCB had in fact asked Sri Lanka to consider playing the upcoming series in Pakistan but whatever little hope there was of that happening was destroyed by the recent attacks on a naval base in Karachi. The UAE is a home of sorts, though the PCB has not entered into a long-term agreement with authorities there. The costs of hosting a series in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are higher than would be the case elsewhere, but the benefits in terms of sponsorship could ultimately be greater. The third option is one that the PCB has also explored: hosting a ‘home’ series at the venue of the opponent, as they did with New Zealand in 2009-10 or in another venue, like England, where they played two Tests against Australia last year. Though England is unlikely to be a venue again for a while, following last year’s controversies, the board is also looking at hosting the ‘home’ series against Sri Lanka later this year in Sri Lanka itself. Even the series against England, which is to be played early next year according to the Future Tours Programme, could possibly be played in Sri Lanka, given that England are due to play Sri Lanka after the Pakistan series. Likely to be a factor here, however, is the relatively limited potential of earnings from sponsorship in Sri Lanka.Mani said Pakistan could benefit from playing in the UAE as they would draw crowds there. The UAE hosted a one-day and Test series between Pakistan and South Africa last year and while the limited-overs games saw decent crowds, a combination of the heat and flat pitches left the stadiums almost empty during the Tests.”Pakistan have good support here and we want them to make it worth their while to come and play here,” Mani said. “They could play in Sri Lanka as well but that’s up to them to decide. But here they will get immense support which works wonders for the team’s confidence.”The series against Sri Lanka and England are scheduled for October this year and January next year, and both will comprise three Tests, five one-day internationals and a one-off Twenty20 international.

Kirby shows teeth but Lancashire regroup

For the second day running, Lancashire recovered from a difficult first session to take the upper hand, this time repelling Steve Kirby’s efforts to remind them forcibly of his local roots to establish a useful lead, much to the pleasure of another sizeable crowd, who turned out not just to enjoy the sunshine but to show their appreciation for Liverpool’s temporary status as the county’s headquarters.Around 1,300 spectators have turned out on each of the first two days, their presence lending an old-fashioned festive atmosphere to this pleasant tree-lined ground with its splendid Victorian pavilion. The club is equally renowned for producing a good cricket wicket and Kirby, born in Bury and a young player for Heywood, near Rochdale, clearly felt at home, his figures of 5 for 79 not really doing justice to how well he bowled, particularly in the morning and early afternoon, when he found the right length to allow the ball to swing away late and threatened to demolish Lancashire on his own, exacting revenge, perhaps, for being overlooked by them in his youth. It was down to him, certainly, that Lancashire lost their way a little after Paul Horton and Stephen Moore had put on 93 for the first wicket, making it appear that Somerset’s 268 might have been a good score after all. After Kirby had taken his first four wickets, Lancashire had a good deal of repair work to do at 169 for 5.But as Kirby tired and no one stepped up in an effective supporting role, a stand of 113 between Gareth Cross and Tom Smith for the sixth wicket swung the day back in Lancashire’s favour, with the Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof — inspired by the opportunity to take on his compatriot, Ajantha Mendis — chipping in with an unbeaten 49 on debut to stretch the home side’s lead to 93 at the close.Smith has needed to be versatile in recent seasons, when he has alternated between his present middle-order slot and opening. He made his career-best 128 against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl last July as Horton’s partner at the top of the order but looks more suited to coming in lower down, although the experience he had gained against the new ball probably helped him summon the patience required to dig Lancashire out of their hole.Solid and organised, he would have been aware that he would need to be the steadying influence in the rebuilding work, first with Gareth Cross, older but less experienced, and then with Maharoof, who arrived in the middle announcing — in Smith’s words — that he was going to “smoke Mendis”.Just as well, then, that Smith had set his focus on being a slow burner, batting for four and a quarter hours without offering a whiff of a chance until Marcus Trescothick, who had used five bowlers in support of Kirby with only limited success, decided to try Arul Suppiah’s left-arm spin.Smith had reached 89, his best score since that century last July, and clearly felt a fourth first-class hundred could be his when he found himself stretching to reach for a ball from Suppiah and edged to Trescothick at slip. After Horton, much earlier, had edged Charl Willoughby to first slip, the morning belonged to Kirby, bowling with brimming intent and as impressive as Saj Mahmood had been on day one.The 33-year-old, who has been on the fringes of the England team without really coming close to selection, is with his fourth county, having started his professional career with Leicestershire. His biggest success, winning a Championship medal with Yorkshire, is a decade ago now but he has moved from Gloucestershire to Somerset over the winter in the belief that he might enjoy a reprise. He looked like a match-winner yesterday, striking first to have Moore edging to gully to be out for 73, his best Championship score for Lancashire. It was the first of three wickets in 10 balls, followed up when Karl Brown edged to point and Steven Croft was caught behind. Figures of 6-1-19-3 reflected an impressive opening spell.Early in the afternoon, he made Mark Chilton his fourth victim, snaffled by Trescothick at second slip, and gave a leap and a punch of delight when he broke the Smith-Cross partnership in similar fashion, having the latter caught, again by Trescothick at second slip, just after the wicketkeeper had completed a bright half-century.But there was an element of frustration behind the celebration, too, with Lancashire already back on top.

Former Derbyshire captain Ian Buxton dies

Ian Buxton, the former Derbyshire captain, has died aged 72 at his home in the Derbyshire town of Matlock. In 15 season at Derbyshire he played 350 first-class matches making 11,803 runs at 23.94 as a middle-order batsman. He also captured 483 first-class wickets at 26.38, including 12 five-wicket hauls, with his medium-pace bowling. One of the highlights of his career was when he took 11 wickets in a day to inflict a defeat on Worcestershire in 1968. He was county captain between 1970 and 1972.Buxton was one of the last of those who was able to play professional football as well as cricket, enjoying spells with Derby County, Luton Town and Notts County before joining Port Vale in 1969 and was a regular throughout the rest of the club’s 1969-70 Fourth Division promotion-winning campaign. The club paid the £500 registration fee to sign him permanently, in the knowledge that his cricket commitments meant he would miss the last four games anyway.

Liverpool in talks for Gavi transfer

Liverpool are interested in a deal to bring Gavi to Anfield in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Catalan media outlet El Nacional, who claim that, with the 17-year-old demanding a significant pay rise in his contract negotiations with Barcelona – something that the LaLiga side cannot afford – Liverpool have already contacted the midfielder’s entourage informing them the Reds are willing to pay his €50m (£42m) release clause.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

A further report by the same publication revealed that the Premier League side would be willing to offer the Spain international a salary of around €4m-per-year (£3.4m-per-year), which works out at around £65k-per-week – a figure that is much greater than Barcelona could offer the teenager.

It could be bye-bye Salah

With Mohamed Salah’s own contract situation at Liverpool still appearing rather unclear at present – the 29-year-old is yet to put pen to paper on an extension at Anfield, with his current deal set to expire next summer – should Liverpool indeed go on to make a move for Gavi this summer, it could well be a clear indication that the Egypt international will be on the move.

However, while Salah’s departure would undoubtedly come as a huge blow to everyone involved with Liverpool, considering the sheer amount of potential the young Spaniard quite clearly possesses, there would not seem many better signings Jurgen Klopp’s side could make in order to replace their £90m-rated talisman.

Indeed, despite Gavi’s primary position being that of a central midfielder, the £54m-rated sensation has demonstrated over his 11 of his outings having already come on either the left or right flank.

Furthermore, it is clear from the £2.2k-per-week teenager’s heatmap over his 26 LaLiga outings this season that he had a tendency to drift out wide – something that would suggest the Spaniard’s long-term future could well be as a winger.

Gavi quite clearly possesses all of the attributes to be an extremely successful wide forward in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side, with FBref ranking the 17-year-old in the top 7% of all wingers in Europe’s big five leagues for pressures per 90, as well as the top 1% for pass completion, the top 25% for tackles, the top 15% for interceptions and the top 5% for blocks.

However, it is far from just an impressive work rate in the Masia graduate’s wheelhouse, as the player who Pedri recently dubbed an “absolutely crazy” talent also possesses an extremely creative eye – having scored two goals, registered five assists and created six big chances for his teammates in LaLiga this season.

As such, considering his undoubted ability, extremely impressive positional versatility and affordable buy-out clause, should Salah indeed move onto pastures new this summer, Gavi would very much appear to be a near-perfect replacement for the 29-year-old.

WBA predicted XI vs Millwall

After succumbing to a disheartening 2-0 defeat against Preston North End in their latest Championship clash, West Brom are back in action again this afternoon with an away game against Millwall, who are currently ten places and 12 points below the Baggies in the league table.

With Valerien Ismael revealing that Sam Johnstone will not be in the squad this afternoon but that Andy Carroll should be available, here’s how we feel West Brom will line up for today’s clash against Millwall with the likes of Kean Bryan, Dara O’Shea and Daryl Dike out injured and Semi Ajayi still away on international duty.

In goal, with Johnstone still not involved, it seems likely that David Button will keep his place in the team to try and keep a clean sheet for the Baggies.

In a back three, we think Ismael will keep Kyle Bartley and Cedric Kipre in the side but put Conor Townsend in the left wing-back position with Adam Reach, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £23k-per-week according to Salary Sport, dropping out and Matt Clarke coming back in.

For the right wing-back position, we can see Darnell Furlong keeping his place in the team to see if he can have any attacking impact on the team after providing an assist in their recent 3-0 win over Peterborough United.

In the two central-midfield positions, we predict Ismael will stick with the duo of club captain Jake Livermore and Alex Mowatt.

Then for the front three, we could see the duo of Karlan Grant and Grady Diangana keeping their places in the team on the wings but see Matt Phillips drop out in place of Callum Robinson, with Carroll on the bench to come on as a substitute to make his debut if needed.

Whether Ismael goes with this exact starting XI that we have suggested or not, this is still an important game for the Baggies to secure all three points, climb a step closer to promotion and put their spotty run of form in recent weeks behind them.

Also, with West Brom unable to make even one shot on target in their defeat against Preston, they will certainly need to show a bit more attacking intent this time around if they want to have any chance of securing a win.

In other news: Ismael must unleash £18k-p/w WBA gem who “gives his all”, his job could depend on it – opinion

Celtic: Kieran Devlin drops Reo Hatate claim

Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin dropped some inside information on January signing Reo Hatate following his starring display in the Glasgow Derby on Wednesday.

The Lowdown: Hatate at the double

Hatate, who cost the Hoops just £1.38m last month, netted twice and provided an assist for Liel Abada as Ange Postecoglou’s side blew Rangers away in the opening 45 minutes.

The 24-year-old also contributed defensively in a three-man midfield, winning four duels and making two tackles during his 73-minute display, ending with a SofaScore match rating of 8.8/10.

Hatate, who can also play on the left, now has four goal contributions in as many games in green and white, and Devlin shared some information from the Hoops dressing room regarding the Japanese star.

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin shared a story on The Athletic the morning after the Glasgow Derby win and touched on Hatate.

He relayed comments from Postecoglou, who believes ‘he will improve’, with Devlin adding:

“Despite his late arrival, sources close to the first team say his transition has been smooth and his understanding of what Postecoglou wants from his No 8s is “scarily” instinctive.”

The Verdict: Scary indeed

Hatate has taken to Postecoglou’s system with ease and along with another winter addition, Matt O’Riley, have been the club’s best performers, as per WhoScored.

The crazy part is Hatate isn’t thought to be up to speed in terms of completing 90 minutes, which explains why he has been replaced in three of his four Celtic appearances.

When he is at full fitness, we could see even more from the versatile star, which explains Devlin’s ‘scary’ claim.

Liverpool fans fume at David Lynch claim

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after journalist David Lynch claimed that the Reds won’t sign anyone in the January transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp’s side drew 2-2 away to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon as a memorable Premier League encounter played out at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool blew a two-goal lead in west London, and while the result was still far from terrible, more valuable ground was lost to Manchester City in the title race.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita will now all depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, potentially heightening the need for new signings to be made.

That doesn’t appear to be the case, however, with Lynch telling Anfield Watch [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] that the Reds are ‘pretty adamant’  that signings won’t be made this month.
