Five uncapped players in England T20 squad

Sam Billings, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey and Mark Wood are the uncapped players England have picked for the only T20 international against New Zealand

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jun-2015Sam Billings, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey and Mark Wood are the uncapped players England have picked for the only T20 international against New Zealand at Old Trafford on June 23. The 13-man squad did not include Stuart Broad, who was removed as T20 captain after Andrew Strauss took over as England’s director of cricket.Only Topley and Vince are not involved in the current ODI series against New Zealand. “This match against New Zealand allows us another opportunity to look at players relatively new to international cricket as we look to build a squad for the World T20 in India this winter,” national selector James Whitaker said. “The squad is made up of players who have demonstrated their ability in domestic cricket and fully deserve a chance to continue their progress against a very good New Zealand side.”We have already seen our limited-overs cricket begin to move in the right direction which is exciting but we are all aware that we have plenty more to do if we are going to challenge the very best sides in the world on a regular basis.”It has been a good few weeks for putative England left-arm quicks. David Willey was called up for the ODI squad against New Zealand, Mark Footitt for the pre-Ashes camp and now Reece Topley, barely back from another injury, for T20. England are anxious for a solution to a long-standing weakness. He told BBC Essex: “It’s probably the biggest jump I’ve ever had in the standard of cricket, but I feel like I can contribute at that level. “I’m very excited about seeing how I do and it’s a good time to assess where I am and what I need to improve on.”Squad Eoin Morgan (capt), Sam Billings, Jos Buttler (wk), Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey, Mark Wood

Deserving Sarkar grabs spotlight with World Cup inclusion

Among the nine first-timers in Bangladesh’s 2015 World Cup squad, the inclusion of Soumya Sarkar has drawn the most attention

Soumya Sarkar: ‘I had the hunger within myself that if I play well, I will get a chance’•BCB

‘My target is to make it to the playing XI’

Six of Bangladesh’s nine World Cup first-timers react to being picked in the squad.
Nasir Hossain: I tried to stay normal during the time I was out of the team [last August] but it wasn’t easy. I spoke to coaches and former cricketers, spent time in the nets and I think it all helped me. I tried to enjoy my batting, which brought me back to form. I scored in a number of matches, I believed that if I scored runs, I can return to the team.
Taskin Ahmed: My target is to make it to the playing XI. If I get the chance, I will give my best and prove myself. I played in the World T20 all of a sudden. I want to perform at such a level that the world knows who I am.
Taijul Islam: I have been selected for doing well in two series and in domestic cricket, so that is quite pleasing. I am following the India-Australia series and the Big Bash matches, and trying to figure out what the spinners are doing. The rest I will understand when I am there.
Al-Amin Hossain: I was a little confused whether I will be in the team or not. I had a good 2014 except for the Zimbabwe series, but I think I have returned to bowling in good rhythm in the last few Premier League matches. Maybe that’s why I am in the squad.
Arafat Sunny: I am very happy, excited. I am at a loss of words. I will try to do what the team needs. I have to start improving from January 12 when the camp starts. The most important thing will be to remain fit and healthy.
Sabbir Rahman: It is true that we [Nasir Hossain and him] play for the same position [in the middle order], but Nasir and I don’t really think of it as a competition and we have never talked about it.

Among the nine first-timers in Bangladesh’s 2015 World Cup squad, the inclusion of Soumya Sarkar has drawn the most attention. He is the least experienced member of the squad and is being asked to fill two critical roles: back-up opener and third seamer.Despite what the next couple of months hold for Sarkar, the day when the BCB made the announcement turned out to be a great one for the young allrounder. The media had been gathering all morning as the Dhaka Premier Division Super League match between Sarkar’s Prime Bank Cricket Club and Abahani went on.First he took two wickets with his medium pace to help skittle out Abahani for 161 and then struck 97 to complete the victory and ensure a first Premier League title for his club. The match ended two hours before play, and the Prime Bank players celebrated on. A couple of hours later, BCB president Nazmul Hassan read out his name among the World Cup fifteen. Sarkar was playing football with his team-mates when the media came out of the delayed press conference and looked for him. Life could not be better for the man who will only turn 22 during the World Cup.”I always had the confidence that if I play well this season, there will be an outcome,” Sarkar said. “I had the hunger within myself that if I play well, I will get a chance. The selectors must have thought about me before they picked me. I was thinking of today’s match, since it is an important one. It does feel great that we became champions and I got a chance to play in the World Cup for the first time. It is a big deal for me.”Sarkar is the youngest of three brothers who grew up in the southwestern district of Satkhira. His Pushpen Sarkar played club cricket for a number of years, and is now a businessman. He has been Sarkar’s guardian in Dhaka, and also during his years in the BKSP where he was admitted in 2006, in seventh grade. When he got into the cricket team of the sports institute, the talent came through. In an interschool one-day match, Sarkar struck 250-odd. He played for BKSP’s Premier League side for a few seasons before joining Victoria Sporting Club and later Prime Bank. A couple of years ago he struck a double-hundred in an Under-19 game against Qatar.Though his lack of big domestic runs has been talked about, Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha took an interest in Sarkarand he eventually made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe, where he struggled against moderate pace in a short innings. He might still be some way away from being the third seamer in a two-man pace attack, but for now he can rest assured that he deserves a place among the fifteen. His primary role of third opener/top-order option is due to his runs in the Dhaka Premier League this season. He ended up as the fourth highest scorer, but more importantly he has provided Prime Bank with good starts regularly. The season has started positively for him, and he would hope that the rest of it, particularly the World Cup, goes off as smoothly.

Kings XI, Super Kings resume batting rivalry

Two batting line-ups with impressive firepower take aim at each other in the Champions League semi-final, but Kings XI lead Super Kings 3-0 in 2014

Agarkar: Bravo will be vital

Match factsThursday, October 1, 2014
Start time 2000 local (1430 GMT)Big pictureChennai Super Kings were the original run-mongers of the IPL. The depth of their line-up and the quality of their finishers bolstered a strategy of keeping wickets in hand and going berserk at the death. Kings XI Punjab have seen that and raised them with an even simpler method – pack your best hitters into the top order and let them wreak havoc. That is how they coasted into the knockout stages of the IPL, and that is why they are unbeaten in the Champions League. And that is how they have beaten Super Kings in three out of three meetings in 2014.Super Kings also caught on to front-loading. Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith and Suresh Raina make an explosive top-three in T20s. They had begun the IPL by posting their best powerplay score in seven seasons, only to watch Glenn Maxwell pummel a 200-plus total to pulp. In the Eliminator, a Virender Sehwag century knocked the breath out of Super Kings’ bowling, but a brutal counter from Suresh Raina kept the chase well under control. The back-and-forth resumes with Kings XI making the knockouts of a tournament for the third time, while Super Kings have three titles to their name. Both teams relocate to Hyderabad from a place of comfort. Kings XI Punjab leave Mohali, where they have won 13 out of 18 games chasing. Super Kings have played all but one of their CLT20 games in Bangalore, where they tonked 242 for 6 against Dolphins, the joint-highest score in the tournament.Neither side is as capable on the bowling front. Dwayne Bravo’s versatility has been handy in the death for Super Kings. But the other seamers haven’t been as reliable. Anureet Singh has been impressive in his first tournament for Kings XI, and Akshar Patel’s darts have kept batsmen quiet. However, both teams seemingly function on curtailing runs rather than getting wickets.Form guideKings XI Punjab WWWWL (completed matches only, most recent first)
Chennai Super Kings WWLLWWatch out for46 off 34, unbeaten. 40 off 18, unbeaten. Kings XI’s batting line-up is often never-ending and in David Miller, they have a player capable of drilling that into the opposition and deflating them. He tends to be relatively subdued when starting against spin, but has displayed signs of wanting to work past that period with singles.Super Kings and death bowling has often been a rocky relationship and Dwayne Bravo has been tasked with counseling duties. He has bowled seven of his ten overs in the last five and can flash a shiny economy rate of 7.20 in the CLT20. With his medley of slower balls and his utility with the bat, Bravo has been a highly bankable resource for Dhoni.Stats and trivia Super Kings and Kings XI have the two highest totals in the CLT20. They are responsible for the top five totals in the IPL as well Akshar Patel is the most economical bowler from either side. He has given away 5.81 runs per over from four matches

Naman Ojha called up after Saha injury

Naman Ojha, the wicketkeeper batsman, has been included in the India squad for the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford as replacement for an injured Wriddhiman Saha

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Jul-2014Naman Ojha, the wicketkeeper-batsman, has got his maiden Test call-up taking the place of the injured Wriddhiman Saha for the Old Trafford Test against England starting on August 7.”Wriddhiman Saha is injured and will soon return to India,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said. “Ojha will replace him as the back-up wicketkeeper.”Ojha, 31, has been in a rich vein of form with the India A side that toured Australia in July. He struck three centuries, including a maiden double-ton in two first-class matches. Ojha’s last stint with the national side was in June 2010 for a limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe, but is yet to make his Test debut. He has 6877 runs from 101 first-class matches, putting his average at 42.71. As wicketkeeper, he has 288 catches and 34 stumpings.Ojha’s return to the national set-up came on the back of a productive season for Madhya Pradesh in the last Ranji Trophy: 835 runs from seven matches, his best returns in over a decade of domestic cricket. He was able to capitalise on that form against Australia A striking an unbeaten 219 off 250 balls in his first hit and adding a further 101 not out in the second innings at Brisbane. He was dismissed only once during the entire tour, and that after scoring 110 in the next drawn first-class game.

Banter spurred Gohar to win it for Pakistan

In the 33rd over of Pakistan’s chase, immediately after Saifullah Khan became England’s sixth victim, the contest was spiced up by a verbal showdown between the England players and the two batsmen. England’s Matthew Fisher got in the act and the target was Zafar Gohar, who had just walked in. England’s players were at the receiving end of the invective against India a match ago but this time, chose not to play victim. The umpire then had a long chat with England captain Will Rhodes to defuse the situation.Gohar, whose day job is a left-arm spinner, showed he could bat too. With Amad Butt, Gohar gave Pakistan the belief that they could pull it off after 142 for 7. Their eighth-wicket stand of 63 guided Pakistan to the final, with a little help from England, according to Gohar. He politely referred to the showdown as “banter”, but the pictures suggested something more intense. Gohar, in the post-match press conference, said the incident had spurred them on to never give up on the target.”The banter gave me more energy and helped me focus better,” Gohar said. “Seeing them so aggressive, I did not want to lose the match, and wanted to give them the answer by winning the game.”Moments after Pakistan pulled off a tense chase in the final over, the players from both sides put the incident behind them as they embraced. Gohar said the same set of players were no strangers to each other, with the teams playing each other in tournaments leading to the World Cup. “We are good friends, so nothing serious about it,” Gohar assured.Gohar and Butt showed maturity in rotating the strike because the asking rate didn’t demand a boundary off each over. Between them, they hit five fours and a six but they also kept England on their toes by pushing singles. Gohar said the talk in the middle was to bat out 50 overs if needed.”Our coaching staff had told us to play out all the overs, and we had the ability to help the team win,” he said. “I was telling him to bat till the end and build a partnership. Once we started that the pressure was on them, and runs started coming automatically. We did that and we were successful.”That Pakistan made heavy weather of a modest target of 205 was due to the pressure inflicted on themselves due to poor shot selection that reduced them to 57 for 4. The captain Sami Aslam himself put his hand up for not setting a good example, falling lbw trying to sweep the offspinner Rob Sayer, after he had just scored two boundaries.Pakistan were rescued thanks to the stand between Saud Shakeel and Ameer Hamza and then the Gohar-Butt partnership.”I played a bad shot under the circumstances. Two to three players played poor shots, but Saud Shakeel covered up for us very well,” Aslam said. “Then Zafar Gohar and Amad Butt batted excellently. We were confident till the end and the plan was if we could bat long till the last over then we would win.”I got out at an important point, and hopefully I will not repeat the same mistake in the final, and help the team to win.”Aslam and Imam-ul-Haq have been Pakistan’s in-form pair in this World Cup and the batting has depended largely on the two openers. When asked if the middle order was a concern, Aslam said there was evidence to show that they were capable of filling in when needed. Gohar agreed, saying the team’s batting depth could not be underestimated.”The total of 205 was not big. The run-rate was only four and we knew we could achieve it,” Aslam said. “We had a plan in our mind to bat long and keep wickets in hand.”The conditions in the UAE were expected to be similar to that of the subcontinent where the spinners rule, but Aslam felt that on this occasion, teams with good fast-bowling stocks were most likely to succeed.”The way the wicket has behaved so far, it is supporting the seamers as well,” he said. “That is why, apart from us England, South Africa and Australia are playing in the semi-final.”

Kaushal Silva ton highlight of second day

ScorecardKaushal Silva’s fruitful year continued•WICB Media

Heavy skies interfered again in Pallekele, but there was enough time for Kaushal Silva to complete another first-class hundred in a fine year for the right-hand batsman where he also scored 1073 runs in 10 innings for Sinhalese Sports Club, and for New Zealand A to dismiss the remainder of Sri Lanka’s mediocre batting order. Just under 55 overs were bowled on the second day of the four-day match, and at its end, the visitors had hit 31 for no loss in response to Sri Lanka A’s 252.Silva had been the most successful batsman in Sri Lanka’s first-class season earlier in the year – the final of which he helped win thrillingly – and at 27, he is mounting a case for a Test recall. Three men who have played Tests for Sri Lanka this year gave him scant support, as he held out against a good pace attack, and formed the backbone of Sri Lanka’s modest first-innings score with 103. He had begun the day on 49.Doug Bracewell made the first breakthrough for New Zealand A, removing Ashan Priyanjan for 40 in the fifth over of the morning to end his 81-run stand with Silva, whom Bracewell would also dismiss. Ish Sodhi took three middle-order scalps to ensure no more lengthy partnerships would take root, and Corey Anderson added a wicket to the one he had taken on Tuesday. Tearaway Adam Milne dismissed the last man.Carl Cachopa and Anton Devcich began cautiously as the day wound down, finishing on 14 and 11 not out respectively. The weather is forecast to improve on Thursday and Friday, but the rain may not disappear entirely. Only 40 overs were bowled on day one.
