Manchester City are now reportedly leading the race for Aston Villa star Jack Grealish ahead of the summer and should he join Pep Guardiola’s side, it could well be bad news for Raheem Sterling.

According to the Daily Mail, City are now favourites to sign the impressive 25-year-old this summer, despite Manchester United having been very keen on the Villa star last year.

The £54 million-rated Grealish has been the driving force behind Villa’s impressive season in the Premier League this season, with the England international contributing six goals and 10 assists in just 22 top-flight appearances, resulting in a superb 7.73 rating.

Although he signed a new five-year contract with the Villans last summer, his incredible performances this season, which have resulted in his call-up to the England side, make it seem likely that he could depart for a top-four club during the upcoming transfer window, with the Daily Mail suggesting that he is excited by the possibility of becoming part of City’s squad.

Considering the sort of fee that City would have to spend to bring him to the Etihad this summer, you would expect Grealish to be a regular in Guardiola’s side next season, which could have a serious impact on Sterling’s playing time under the Spanish manager.

The former Liverpool man, who reportedly earns £300k per week at City, has been out of favour for recent fixtures and has regularly found himself on the bench, before making a rare start in the 2-0 win against Everton at the weekend.

Although the 26-year-old has enjoyed another impressive season, contributing nine goals and five assists in 25 Premier League appearances, resulting in a 7.29 average rating, he has come under scrutiny for his finishing, most notably after the 2-0 defeat against Manchester United, where he missed a host of chances at the Etihad.

There is no doubting that when on form, Sterling is one of the very best in the Premier League but you can also argue that Grealish has significantly outperformed him this season despite playing in a poorer side, and therefore, he could become City’s first-choice winger should he join in the summer, which could cause problems for the “extraordinary” Sterling.

تحدث عماد النحاس المدير الفني لفريق الكرة الأول بنادي المقاولون العرب عن مواجهة الزمالك، موجهًا التهنئة للفارس الأبيض بعد تحقيقه الفوز.

وكان استاد المقاولون العرب قد استضاف مباراة المقاولون والزمالك في سابع جولات بطولة الدوري المصري الممتاز، والتي انتهت بفوز الأبيض بهدفين مقابل هدف.

وقال النحاس في تصريحات بالمؤتمر الصحفي عقب اللقاء: “مبروك للزمالك، واجهنا بطل الدوري والمباراة انتهت بتفاصيل معينة”.

وأضاف: “وقعنا في أخطاء كثيرة وعدنا للمباراة في وقت متأخر مما زاد الأمر صعوبة علينا”.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho will have some interesting decisions to make over his current squad in the next month, and certainly heading into the summer.

Bye-bye Winks?

A lot has been made about the future of academy graduate and first-team midfielder Harry Winks in north London in recent weeks.

Eurosport’s Dean Jones believes Spurs will listen to suitable offers for him if any were to come in during the January transfer window, whilst he has also claimed that a reunion with Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain is possible.

Back in November, the 24-year-old described his situation as “difficult” ahead of the European Championships at the end of the season, a competition in which the eight-time England international will want to be featuring in.

La Liga outfit Valencia and Premier League rivals Everton are another two teams that have been linked with moves for Winks.

And here’s why Mourinho can afford to let the £36m-rated (€40m) maestro go…

Skipp successor?

Those two words are exactly why Spurs can say goodbye to Winks anytime in the near future.

The fellow homegrown midfielder has come on leaps and bounds during his first loan spell away from N17 this season, so surely it is only a matter of time before he breaks into the senior set-up under Mourinho.

At Championship outfit Norwich City, Skipp has recorded a total of 47 tackles at an average of two per game, whilst also managing to hit an 88.5% passing success rate from an average of 57 passes per outing, via WhoScored.

The 20-year-old is simply dominating matches at that level, as seen in his average of 69 touches per match, having helped the Canaries to top spot in the division.

His impact has been so good that his loan boss Daniel Farke has been left blown away, he said to reporters:

“To prove this for such a young lad in really his first full season, where he plays every three days, in the toughest league in the world is outstanding,” before adding: “With his character and how he behaves within the group it underlines why Jose said he could be a future Tottenham captain. He has this pedigree.”

Indeed, the ‘Special One’ has stumbled across his next gem, dubbing him a “future captain” – something first noted by Pochettino, who claimed Skipp was a “top player” all the way back in 2018.

Winks’ exit could fund other areas in the squad all whilst knowing that Mourinho has his perfect successor ready in waiting right under his nose.

Everton slipped up in the previous transfer window by allowing Theo Walcott to join Southampton on loan until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old returned to his boyhood side late in the summer market after the Toffees failed to secure a permanent deal, having shopped Walcott around as part of a vast clear out at Goodison Park to recoup some cash from their spending spree.

Walcott had only moved to Merseyside two-and-a-half years prior in a deal worth in excess of £20m, but had been deemed surplus to requirements by Carlo Ancelotti as he entered the final year of his £100,000-per-week contract.

Everton’s inability to find suitors willing to purchase the £9m-rated winger ultimately opened the door for his homecoming at St. Mary’s, where Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are only on the hook for half of Walcott’s wages.

Trevor Sinclair has recently revealed he was surprised by Everton’s decision to allow Walcott to join Southampton until the end of the season, at which point he will be a free agent, as the former Arsenal forward had become a real attacking threat again.

“I think they [Southampton] have strengthened as well bringing in Theo,” Sinclair told talkSPORT. “He was a breath of fresh air.

“For me, I was surprised that Everton let him go because I have been to Everton and Goodison a few times where Theo has looked really on it and looks like he is happy and enjoying his football.

“Definitely over any kind of injuries, so yes he was a real threat.”

Walcott has scored two goals and provided two assists in 13 Premier League games for Southampton this season, while starting all of his appearances and only sitting out the Saints’ 2-0 win over Everton last October.

His presence has not entirely been missed at Goodison Park with Alex Iwobi stepping up to the challenge of deputising for James Rodriguez whilst the Colombian was out injured, with the Nigerian delivering some of his best Everton performances to date.

But it can now be considered a blunder by Everton’s Director of Football Marcel Brands to allow Walcott to join Southampton until his contract expires in the summer, as the former England international’s form will no doubt have attracted suitors this year.

Everton are now simply paying Walcott to put his services in the shop window ahead of becoming a free agent, which may not last for long with Hasenhuttl already confirming that he sees no reason why Southampton should not strive to finalise a long-term contract.

“I am very happy that he is comfortable here now and that he is happy to play for us and there is no reason why we should not think about keeping him longer here,” he said, via quotes by the Daily Mail, last month.

The Saints would certainly be wise to lock up a player that has become such a key weapon in Hasenhuttl’s armoury, with Danny Ings (2.1) and Che Adams (1.7) the only Southampton players offering more shots per Premier League game than the Everton-owned forward (1.6), per WhoScored.

Only James Ward-Prowse (1.6) and Adams (1.1) are providing more key passes than Walcott (0.9), too, while the 31-year-old – who ranks first at St. Mary’s for attempted dribbles (2.9) – further delivers 1.8 crosses a game, as the Saints march on in hopes of qualifying for Europe.

Everton, for whom Walcott would rank fourth for shots and fifth for key balls, may now be regretting their decision to allow the forward’s loan deal to go through and wave goodbye to any hopes of recouping anything of the fee paid to Arsenal at the start of 2018.

Everton must avoid a dire swoop for Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira in the January window, with Carlo Ancelotti reportedly considering the has-been German for an important role at Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

According to Calciomercato.it, Khedira is preparing to leave Serie A heavyweight Juventus in the upcoming winter market, having failed to play a single minute under Andrea Pirlo this term.

Khedira has now come to terms with the Italy icon wanting to persist without his services in any competition, leading the 32-year-old to switch his focus to securing a mid-season move amid interest from the Premier League.

Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are both said to be open to a move for Khedira, with Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho holding high-regards of the midfielder they each managed at Real Madrid.

The chance to reunite with either Ancelotti or Mourinho and become an important asset of their midfields is understood to hand Everton and Tottenham a greater chance of striking a deal with the 2014 World Cup winner, who Juventus would like to sell in order to offload his mammoth £185,000-per-week contract.

Khedira recently spoke to Sky Germany on his appreciation of the Italian and Portuguese tacticians, noting how he would not rule out reuniting with either should the chance arise.

“I really enjoyed working with Jose Mourinho but there are many coaches who I would like to work with,” he said. “I would never say no again to Jose Mourinho, but it is not the only guy who I would say I would like to work with again.

“There are many coaches, even in the Premier League that I respect a lot. Ancelotti is doing a great job at the moment and is a great personality. He is one of the coaches who impressed me also.”

Walk away

Everton Director of Football Marcel Brands would be well advised to avoid stepping up the Goodison Park outfit’s interest in Khedira and reuniting Ancelotti with the German, as the Juventus outcast is far from the player he was when the pair lifted the 2013/14 Champions League trophy with Real Madrid.

As well as being shunned by Pirlo this term, Khedira started just nine of his 12 Serie A appearances under Maurizio Sarri last term before enduring lengthy spells on the sidelines after knee surgery and a tear in the abductor muscle.

Only twice in those nine starts did the Stuttgart-born midfielder feature for the full 90 minutes, as well, with Sarri substituting the German before the 70th-minute in seven of his outings.

Khedira’s decline from his golden age with Real Madrid stretches back even further, too, with Germany icon Oliver Kahn slamming the 32-year-old for his woeful efforts in their country’s tumultuous 2018 World Cup efforts that saw Joachim Low’s men finish bottom of Group F after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to South Korea.

“They deserved to go out. The players didn’t show enough commitment throughout the Group Stage,” he said, via quotes by talkSPORT. “They lacked togetherness, and their play was far too static. The main disappointments for me were Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil.

“They were bypassed during the first game against Mexico, and were left on the bench against Sweden. They got another chance on Wednesday, but neither of them could take it. They are two of our most experienced players, yet they failed in too many areas.”

Khedira, who Shaka Hislop said of last year his “legs are gone”, has done nothing in the two-years since to suggest his career has enjoyed a second wind, so it boggles the mind to suggest he would improve Everton’s midfield unit in January.

AND in other news, Everton are on course to repeat a Steve Walsh horror with swoop for a gem with “incredible speed”.

According to CalcioMercato, Glasgow Rangers are still interested in signing long-term target Lovro Majer from Dinamo Zagreb.

What’s the word?

Reports at the start of the year revealed that the Light Blues were tracking the Croatia U21 international back in January. But Steven Gerrard’s side ended up signing Ianis Hagi initially on loan instead, before he impressed in his short spell at Ibrox before the Scottish Premiership was suspended in March.

And Rangers signed the Romania international on a permanent deal from Genk in the summer as he was described by Gerrard as a “pleasure to coach.”

It’s claimed that the Gers remain in the race to sign Majer in the winter transfer window but will face stiff competition from some of Europe’s top clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Fiorentina, Sevilla and Valencia, whilst Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United are also closely monitoring the situation. But Ross Wilson must sanction a swoop for the £2m-rated ace, otherwise he may never get another opportunity.

Better than Kranjcar?

Croatia has become a scouting ground for the Gers in recent years, having signed both Borna Barisic and Nikola Katic since Steven Gerrard first took charge at the Ibrox outfit.

For every Nikica Jelavic or Dado Prso, there has been a Niko Kranjcar, so Ross Wilson may want to tread very carefully indeed.

This season, Majer has made one appearance in the Europa League, whilst he has averaged one shot, three key passes and three dribbles per game, via WhoScored. In comparison, Hagi has only managed one key pass per game, as per WhoScored.

The 22-year-old has scored three goals and supplied two assists in six games in the Croatian top flight, otherwise known as the 1.HNL, after bagging a brace against NK Lokomotiva at the start of the season, via Transfermarkt.

On the other hand, Kranjcar could only manage to score one goal and supply one assist in sixteen appearances in the Scottish Premiership, via Transfermarkt. The veteran was 31 at the time of his arrival and was plagued by constant injury setbacks over the course of his career, so he was undoubtedly past his peak, whereas Majer, who plays in a similar position, has stayed unscathed so far.

Despite his young age, Majer has already been compared to Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric. Hagi has also been tipped for greatness, with his father Gheorghe Hagi recently insisting that his son has a similar playing style to current Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane. Even so, he has copped a fair amount of criticism so far, as well.

Whilst it’s too early to tell whether or not Majer will be better than Kranjcar, it’s fair to say that, unlike his countryman, the youngster remains a relatively risk-free signing. One thing’s for sure, he’s certainly on the right track if his record is anything to go by.

Gerrard has shown he can get the best out of young players, as he has worked wonders with both Hagi and Calvin Bassey. So, he could take his game to the next level if he moves to Ibrox, as he’d almost certainly be guaranteed games. Get it done, Gers, before it’s too late!

Deadline day may have come and gone last Monday, but we still have a few days of the domestic transfer window to go.

Leeds don’t seem all that likely to do any business, but if they are to get someone in, it looks as though it will be a midfielder.

Todd Cantwell remains the only real concrete link, while it’s clear that it’s a position that the club want to bolster after their failed pursuit of Michael Cuisance.

However, we can’t help but feel that Leeds are looking to strengthen the wrong area.

Yes, there is room for improvement in the midfield, but the depth there is fine, with Mateusz Klich, Adam Forshaw and Jamie Shackleton all having plenty of experience in playing that role under Bielsa.

However, when you look across to right-back, there is the potential for a dangerous situation.

Now, nobody can argue that Luke Ayling has done anything but a stellar job in that spot so far this season, because he’s been fantastic, earning an average WhoScored rating of 7.21, but if he gets injured or suspended, things start to look troublesome.

Leeds no longer have the safety net option of Gaetano Berardi who could slot in comfortably at right-back, so if Ayling was to go down with a problem, their options would be to play Shackleton out of position, in a role he’s only played 13 times at Championship level, or to call upon Cody Drameh, a man with no first-team experience.

If Leeds are looking to strengthen their squad before the domestic deadline, then the first port of call should be at right-back as there is seemingly a disaster waiting to happen in that spot if Ayling finds himself unavailable for selection.

Victor Orta needs to get into gear and find the club an adequate back-up in that position, even if it’s just on loan until January where he can start to look abroad again.

Speaking exclusively to the Evening Standard, ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards has claimed that summer signing Joe Hart is ‘exactly’ what Spurs need ahead of the upcoming Premier League season, going on to state that he is an ‘inspirational’ character who could motivate the dressing room. 

Hart has gone to enjoy an illustrious career with plenty of highs and lows since he signed for the Sky Blues from Shrewsbury Town back in 2006, winning five major trophies, including two Premier League titles, and making 348 appearances for the club before parting company in the summer of 2018 (Transfermarkt).

After being deemed surplus to requirements by manager Pep Guardiola upon his arrival in 2016, who was after a sweeper ‘keeper who could help implement his tiki-taka philosophy, Hart suffered through a less than impressive spell at Burnley before being allowed to leave the club as a free agent.

Pleading to new clubs in a BBC interview, Spurs opted to give Hart a chance, snapping him up on a free deal.

Richards, who helped City to their first Premier League triumph in 2012 along with Hart, has now stated that he is ‘exactly’ what the club need if Tottenham are going to cement a top four place and challenge for silverware.

“He won’t be going as a No3 [goalkeeper],” Richards explained to Standard Sport.

“He knows he’s going to be No2, that’s the reason he has gone there. Joe is an inspirational character. I couldn’t speak any higher [of him]. When he was England keeper he was always knocking on your door.

“When I was at City, there were big characters. For Spurs, that is exactly what they need. Every time they get to a big game they freeze a little bit.

“They have the quality but it is just the characters to get them over the line. Joe Hart, whether playing or in the dressing room, is a massive character.”

Whether or not the 75-cap international proves to be a coup remains to be seen, but signing an experienced motivator like Hart on a free transfer could be deemed a good bit of business from Levy.
