Tom Banton, Joe Clarke, Liam Dawson and Laurie Evans are among the English players set to be available in the Hundred draft on March 30 after failing to agree retentions with their respective teams, ESPNcricinfo understands.Tim David, who was signed by Mumbai Indians for INR 8.25 crore (£810,000 approx.) at last weekend’s IPL auction, has been retained for just £50,000 by Southern Brave, while Andre Russell and Kagiso Rabada are among the biggest overseas names set to be available in the draft.Men’s teams have been negotiating with players and their representatives since December 1 and had the option to retain up to 10 players who held contracts at any stage for the inaugural season in 2021. The retention window closes on Wednesday and signings will be confirmed officially by the ECB next week.Men’s wages have increased by 25% across each salary band, but coaches and general managers struggled to fit every player they wanted to retain into their draft grid, which sees a maximum of two players paid the same wage in any given squad.Related

Many of the players who have been released were offered contracts by teams but turned them down. Some are looking for a new team after a lack of opportunities last season, while others will hope to earn a higher salary, taking advantage of the uncertainty around overseas players’ availability and the resulting demand for domestic players. Each team will be allowed to use one right-to-match (RTM) card at the draft, which can be used to re-sign a player from their 2021 squad, so long as they can match the salary for which another team has tried to sign them. Picks will be made in reverse order of finishing position, with London Spirit picking first and Southern Brave last. The availability of overseas players has been a major stumbling block, with continued uncertainty over the Future Tours Programme. India’s tour to West Indies, Afghanistan’s to Ireland, Pakistan’s to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh’s to Zimbabwe are all due to overlap in part while South Africa’s Test series in England is due to start halfway through. The Hundred runs from August 3 to September 3 with the women’s competition starting on August 11.Australia are also due to play a limited-overs series against Zimbabwe at the end of August – though they may well field a weakened side – while the Caribbean Premier League and the Asia Cup could clash with the knockout stages. As a result, most teams have released several overseas players. Teams are allowed three overseas players in both their squad and their playing XI.Changes to England’s central contracts list have opened up free spots for some teams, with Mark Wood, Jonny Bairstow, Zak Crawley and Dawid Malan among the players who will be allocated centrally by the ECB rather than paid directly through the draft mechanism. The four players on white-ball-only contracts – Moeen Ali, Eoin Morgan, Adil Rashid and Jason Roy – will still be paid through the draft and have all been retained.Southern BraveThe defending champions have retained most of the squad that took them to the title last year. Tymal Mills, Jake Lintott, George Garton and Alex Davies have all earned pay rises while Chris Jordan rejected the promise of a lucrative offer in the draft from elsewhere in order to stay put.James Vince will continue as captain but Liam Dawson, Danny Briggs and Delray Rawlins have all been released. With Jofra Archer unlikely to play much Test cricket this summer as the ECB manage his return from a long-term elbow injury, he could be available for most of the season.David only played twice in 2021, scoring 15 off 6 balls and running Liam Livingstone out in the final, but has been retained on the cheap after his remarkable form around the world. Marcus Stoinis, who missed the inaugural season, has also been retained and while Quinton de Kock has been released, multiple sources suggested Brave, who have the last first-round pick, will use their RTM card if another team tries to sign him ahead of them in the first round of the draft.Tim David won the Hundred with Southern Brave•Getty Images

Birmingham PhoenixPhoenix topped the group-stage table in 2021, thanks in no small part to their decision to pick Liam Livingstone in the first round of the inaugural draft in 2019. He has been retained for next season, along with the core of last season’s squad which included Moeen Ali, Will Smeed and Benny Howell.Shaheen Shah Afridi was unavailable in 2021 and may be again this season but could be retained if Phoenix look to secure him for future seasons, while Tom Helm, Adam Hose and Dillon Pennington have been released. Tom Abell’s future is unclear but he has attracted interest from other teams and was disappointed to be left out of the side for last season’s final.Trent RocketsLewis Gregory struggled with the bat and had his bowling contributions limited by a back injury last season but has been retained and is likely to continue as captain. The majority of Rockets’ Nottinghamshire core – including Alex Hales, Steven Mullaney, Tom Moores and Matthew Carter – have been retained, while Rashid Khan will be retained as an overseas player despite uncertainty over his availability.Luke Wood has been retained and Marchant de Lange will return as an overseas player, but Timm van der Gugten, Luke Wright, D’Arcy Short and Ben Cox are all expected to leave. Multiple sources suggested that Rockets will aim to sign Joe Clarke early on in the draft if he is available but he could be taken before their first pick.Oval InvinciblesThey missed out on the knockout stages by a single point last year and the feeling among players and staff was that they had underperformed given the strength of their squad. As a result, the majority have been retained and the main focus at the draft will be securing cheaper overseas players who are available for the full season. Sunil Narine could be released but would likely be bought back in the draft if he is.Will Jacks was initially expected to re-enter the draft but now looks set to be retained, while Laurie Evans – who was offered an improved deal after impressing in the Big Bash – is due to be released. Jordan Cox, a wildcard last season, has been retained after starring in the Blast for Kent while Tom Curran, Saqib Mahmood and Reece Topley are all staying put.Laurie Evans will be back in the draft•Getty Images

Northern SuperchargersJames Foster was appointed as coach only last week and has been at the PSL as Peshawar Zalmi’s head coach. As a result, general manager Andy Dawson and head of cricket Marcus North have been handling retentions over the winter and were involved in last-minute talks this week.Harry Brook, Adil Rashid, Matthew Potts and Callum Parkinson have all been retained but several others including Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Ben Raine and Matthew Fisher are likely to be available in the draft. Olly Stone, who missed last season with a stress fracture, is set to be released while Jordan Thompson, Adam Lyth and David Willey were still weighing up their options as the deadline approached.Hassan Cheema, who has joined as analyst, has built ultra-attacking batting line-ups at Islamabad United and Team Abu Dhabi and may look to replicate that formula at Superchargers. Faf du Plessis, who was ruled out of the first season due to concussion symptoms, could return as captain.Manchester OriginalsJoe Clarke is set to return to the draft and seems likely to earn a top-bracket deal with several teams interested in signing him. Phil Salt, their other explosive young top-order batter, is expected to stay put while Jos Buttler is likely to be available for the whole season, barring a Test recall.Jamie Overton and Wayne Madsen both missed last season through injury but have been retained. Matt Parkinson was surprisingly linked with a move away early in the retention window but has signed a new deal while Steven Finn and Sam Hain have both been released.Matt Parkinson is staying at Emirates Old Trafford•Getty Images

Welsh FireBen Duckett captained the side for most of last season after Jonny Bairstow’s Test recall and has been convinced to stay put, with Jake Ball, David Payne, Leus du Plooy, Ryan Higgins and Matt Critchley also set to be retained.Bairstow moves into the centrally-contracted category again, freeing up a top-bracket spot for the draft, while Tom Banton, Ian Cockbain, Luke Fletcher, Graeme White and Matt Milnes have been released. Fire are expected to start from scratch with their overseas signings and will have the second pick in the draft.London SpiritSpirit finished rock bottom in the first season and have unsurprisingly had a clear-out of their squad as a result. Eoin Morgan stays on as captain while Brad Wheal, Blake Cullen, Adam Rossington and Mason Crane are all retained but the majority of their team-mates – including Chris Wood, Luis Reece and Joe Denly – have been released.Shane Warne raised the possibility of recruiting both Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green while commentating for Fox during the Ashes but Andre Russell is likely to be their first pick of the draft if he puts his name forward.

The Jamaica international forward was involved in a horror road traffic accident on December 7. His Ferrari was written off after colliding with a tree, leaving Antonio having to be cut from wreckage before being airlifted to hospital.

The 34-year-old forward concedes that he is lucky to be alive. He has undergone surgery on a lower leg fracture and has been training again in Dubai as he looks to work his way back to full fitness. That process could take up to 12 months.

WHAT JULEN LOPETEGUI SAID

Lopetegui was West Ham manager at the time of the incident and admits that those inside the club feared the worst after learning how severe the accident had been. The Spanish coach told : "We feared he was leaving us."

Antonio was one of several issues that ex-Real Madrid coach Lopetegui had to contend with during his short reign at the London Stadium. He also saw Brazilian playmaker Lucas Paqueta face accusations of breaching gambling regulations, but said of the South American: "He handled it very well; we were pleased with his commitment."

Imagine him & Van de Ven: Spurs could soon unleash their very own Gabriel

Over the last couple of months, Tottenham Hotspur’s academy has caught the eye, allowing multiple youngsters to make an impact on the club’s first team.

Mikey Moore is undoubtedly the biggest beneficiary, starting his first competitive match against Ferencvaros a couple of weeks ago, after a handful of cameos off the bench.

Despite being just 17, he’s given boss Ange Postecoglou a lot to think about regarding his role, potentially forcing himself into the Aussie’s plans after the ongoing international break.

Striker Will Lankshear also made his first senior start during the same outing as Moore, featuring for over an hour, demonstrating the success of the club’s academy in recent times.

However, the club have also recruited well, with one player transforming Spurs in the defensive department, making them a much harder outfit to break down since his arrival.

Micky Van de Ven’s stats for Spurs

Dutch centre-back Micky Van de Ven would’ve been an unknown quantity to many Spurs supporters before his move back in August 2023, but just over a year on, he’s cemented himself as one of the best in his position within the Premier League.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven

The former Wolfsburg ace has made 36 appearances since his £34.5m transfer, forming a solid partnership with Argentinian, Cristian Romero, at the back for Postecoglou’s side.

Van de Ven isn’t your average centre-back, often seen going on a mazy run or two, as demonstrated against Manchester United where he picked up a loose ball before driving from his own half to the byline before teeing up Brennan Johnson for a tap-in.

The 23-year-old currently holds the record for being the fastest player in Premier League history, clocking a speed of 37.38km/h last season.

Van de Ven has been part of a Spurs backline that has kept three clean sheets already this season, as he looks to boost the club’s chances of returning to Champions League football next campaign.

Micky van de Ven withdrawn due to injury

Should they qualify, he could be partnered by one talent who’s set to move to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium upon the completion of the 2024/25 season.

The man who could be Spurs’ own Gabriel

Every Spurs fan must be sick of the sight of Arsenal centre-back Gabriel, with the Brazilian scoring the winning goal against the Gunners in the North London derby earlier this season.

The 26-year-old has also scored against Manchester City, demonstrating a goalscoring threat despite his main responsibility being defensive work, having chalked up 17 goals in total during his time in English football.

Postecoglou’s side could be about to get their hands on their own version of the defender in the form of youngster Luka Vuskovic, who’s set to arrive in North London ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 17-year-old agreed a £12m deal with Spurs last summer to join the club when he turns 18, subsequently spending the current season on loan at Belgian outfit Westerlo.

It’s already been a successful move for the “scary” youngster, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, with the 6 foot 5 defender scoring four times in his first ten appearances in the Belgian Pro League, showcasing that Gabriel-like threat in the attacking penalty area.

Vuskovic has already won 47 duels this season, whilst also boasting an 83% aerial success rate, providing that aerial dominance that Postecoglou’s side have been craving at the back.

Given his tender age, he will need time to settle into life in England, but all the early signs are positive for the youngster, with the hope being that he can form a long-term partnership with left-footer, Van de Ven, in the near future.

He has the potential to develop into one of the very best centre-halves in the league, potentially having a huge impact on both boxes for Spurs over the years to come.

Arsenal willing to pay £50m to sign Bournemouth star who terrorised White

After watching him get the better of Ben White in their shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth, Arsenal are now reportedly willing to pay as much as £50m to sign one Premier League star.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners entered the Vitality Stadium fresh from the international break and seemingly ready to leapfrog both Manchester City and Liverpool before they play their respective games. But to say that things didn’t exactly go to plan would be an understatement.

Arsenal now want to sign highly rated gem who's had Premier League trial

He’s one for the future…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 19, 2024

Starting with William Saliba’s red card, Arsenal’s fortunes only went down from there with Bournemouth going on to score the opening goal courtesy of Ryan Christie and then sealing the points courtesy of Justin Kluivert’s penalty from the bench.

Now left hoping for Liverpool and Manchester City to slip up, Arsenal have reportedly turned their attention back towards the transfer market in the meantime as they look to perfect Mikel Arteta’s side.

According to reports in Spain, Arsenal are now willing to pay £50m to sign Antoine Semenyo in 2025 after the winger terrorised White during Bournemouth’s surprise win over the Gunners.

Semenyo was at his electric best and completed two of his three dribbles and managed to get off six shots at David Raya’s goal. Up against one of the best right-backs that the Premier League has to offer in White, the Bournemouth star proved that he belongs among English football’s elite.

Those at the Emirates aren’t the only ones interested, however, with North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur as well as Newcastle United also willing to pay big money to sign the winger in a busy battle for his signature. When 2025 arrives, it may well be a case of can’t beat him, sign him for Arsenal.

"Intelligent" Semenyo soon ready for big move

Whilst it’s important that players do not rush into a big move, it’s becoming clear that Semenyo is on the verge of stepping up to the level required to complete such a switch. The Bournemouth star has been a clear standout on the South Coast, with three goals in seven Premier League games representing his recent rise at the Vitality.

Those around English football are beginning to take note of that form too. Analyst Ben Mattinson even described Semenyo as “very intelligent” earlier this year before he kicked on even further in the current campaign.

In regards to what Arsenal need, Semenyo may tick the box. When assessing Arteta’s side, Raheem Sterling on loan appears to be a stop-gap before they potentially sign permanent competition for Bukayo Saka in the form of a player who’s just got the better of White. As his form continues, Semenyo will remain one to watch ahead of 2025.

Zinchenko is expected to leave the Gunners this month and Dortmund have placed him at the top of their shortlist, the reports. The Bundesliga giants are keen to sign a left-back this month and had been interested in Chelsea's Renato Veiga, but he is instead set to move to Juventus on loan.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Zinchenko has fallen behind Myles Lewis-Skelly in the pecking order and has been limited to just two Premier League starts. Lewis-Skelly has sustained an injury, however, and Arsenal may wait to see the results of a scan before signing off on Zinchenko's exit.

DID YOU KNOW?

Lewis-Skelly's potential absence is softened by the fact that Arteta also has Riccardo Calafiori as an option, so Zinchenko is still expected to move this month. The Gunners paid £30 million ($37m) to sign him from Manchester City but are unlikely to receive a similar fee. The Ukraine star's contract expires in 2026.

But umpire Nigel Llong kept his finger down, much to the dismay of the fielders, who then saw the elegant right-hander crunch the ball to the boundary two deliveries later.Yorkshire finally got the vital breakthrough when Vince, who had played a relatively risk-free innings, changed tack when on 49 only for his attempt to lift a short ball from Fisher over the rope finding the hands of George Hill.Vince’s exit sparked a collapse of 6 for 37 as Tom Alsop, who soaked up 96 balls for 12 runs, saw his torturous vigil ended by a peach of a delivery from Bess that clipped his off-stump.The impressive Thompson picked up the wickets of Liam Dawson, Barker and Crane either side of tea with Bess grabbing his second victim when Lewis McManus was smartly caught off his boot by Harry Duke.Wheal and Kyle Abbott added some valuable runs in a last-wicket stand of 40 before Coad wrapped up the innings to finish with 3 for 29.

Southampton could now miss out on £17m due to late concerns over transfer

Despite reaching an agreement over the potential sale of one their most expensive players, Southampton now reportedly face a nervous wait for FIFA approval and the £17m involved in the deal.

The Saints endured a mixed summer transfer window. Whilst they welcomed added experience in the form of the returning Adam Lallana and gave Russell Martin the reunion he so desperately desired with Flynn Downes, their recent results suggest that they still needed further reinforcements.

Opening the campaign with three defeats from three and, as such, taking their place in the bottom three of the Premier League as the only newly promoted side without a point so far this season, not even fresh arrival Aaron Ramsdale could prevent his new side's most recent loss against a Brentford side in a clinical mood last time out.

Things may not get any better during the international break either, with those at St Mary's now facing a nervous wait over one particular sale. According to talkSPORT, Southampton are still awaiting FIFA's approval over their deal to loan Kamaldeen Sulemana to Ajax this season in a move that would include the option to buy at £17m.

The Dutch giants reportedly believe that they secured the deal before Monday's deadline in the Netherlands, but only time will tell whether FIFA deem that to be the case and the deal is ratified as a result.

Southampton forwardKamaldeen Sulemana.

Having signed Sulemana for a reported £22m back in 2023, it would represent quite the deal if Southampton managed to make back £17m next summer for a winger who has ultimately failed to make his mark at St Mary's.

Sulemana needs Ajax move

It would suit all parties if the deal went through and secured FIFA's approval. Ajax need a replacement for Steven Bergwijn, Sulemana needs a fresh start and Southampton would bite the Dutch giants' hands off to potentially receive £17m when all is said and done.

Things just never quite worked out for the 23-year-old at Southampton, even when the Saints dropped down the Championship just months after his arrival. For the £22m that they reportedly paid, the Saints would have been forgiven for expecting more when they dropped down to England's second tier, but Sulemana never found his feet under Martin.

The numbers paint a picture that the winger will want to forget as he sets his sights on a move to Ajax. It's there that he will hope to rediscover the form that once attracted Premier League attention whilst at Stade Rennais.

As things stand, however, all parties face a nervous wait for FIFA's approval. In Southampton and Sulemana's ideal world, of course, the Saints will bank £17m next summer and watch on as their once big-money signing becomes an Ajax player on a permanent basis.

Peter Siddle has returned to Australia for personal reasons, cutting short his spell in county cricket with Essex. The former Australia seamer, who was awarded his county cap last month, had been expected to play a full season at Chelmsford, after his 2020 deal was deferred by the Covid-19 pandemic. He will not be returning this summer but held out hopes of coming back in future.”I’m sad to be leaving Chelmsford early as I love playing for Essex,” he said. “I’ve got some great friends in the dressing room and they’re a great bunch to be around and play cricket with. I’ve built some really strong bonds with the guys, so it’s upsetting that I have to go home, but hopefully in the future I can come back and play some more cricket for this great club.”I know I’m getting to the back end of my career, but I’ve still got some playing time left. We’ll see what happens in the coming months and in the build-up to the 2022 season, but fingers crossed there’s still a little bit more cricket to be played for Essex.”Related

He’s a great figure in the dressing room and a leader on the field. He’s been amazing with the younger bowlers and has always offered support and advice, and when playing he’s contributed with some important wickets.”He’s a fierce competitor and always gives it his all, but we wish him nothing but the best and hopefully we see him back at Chelmsford soon.”

Lancashire openers Keaton Jennings and Alex Davies posted their fourth 50 partnership of the season as day one of their LV= County Championship clash with Northamptonshire was cut short by heavy rain.Just 70 minutes play was possible as Northamptonshire welcomed back crowds to Wantage Road to watch Lancashire advance to 59 without loss from 16.5 overs in the morning session.Northamptonshire captain Adam Rossington had won the toss and opted to give his seamers first use of a pitch in overcast conditions. Gareth Berg and Ben Sanderson beat the bat regularly and saw a number of edges fly just wide of the slip cordon. The Lancashire pair though looked to be positive, with Davies striking three fours and bringing up the 50 stand when he clipped Tom Taylor through midwicket. Jennings then found the boundary by going down one knee to stroke Wayne Parnell through the covers before surviving a big shout for leg before wicket against the same bowler on 20.The rain then forced the players from the field. A planned resumption after lunch had to be abandoned when the bad weather returned and play was eventually called off shortly after 4pm.
