Spurs make contact to sign Radu Dragusin 2.0 in "brilliant" titan

Tottenham Hotspur entered the January transfer window with the knowledge that failing to effectively bolster the squad with several high-impact additions could be detrimental ahead of the business end of the campaign.

Fifth-placed in the Premier League after 21 matches – level with Arsenal (fourth) who, albeit, have a game in hand – Ange Postecoglou deserves all the plaudits for the job that he has done in north London since arriving in the summer.

And with Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin boosting the depth in the frontline and central defence respectively, there is optimism that a sustained run of form can be achieved, ensuring that Spurs claim a spot in the top four and wade deep into the FA Cup, having defeated Burnley earlier this month to advance to the fourth round.

With Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma both absent for the next month or so on international duty at the African Cup of Nations, efforts have been made to identify a new midfielder this month, and while this search goes on, Postecoglou appears to be readying a bid for another centre-back.

Spurs January targets – defenders

At the start of the month, Tottenham were reportedly prioritising a deal for OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo but that soon fell apart with negotiations ahead looking protracted, and the focus shifted to Dragusin.

With a deal swiftly agreed, Spurs announced the signing of the Romanian ace, aged 21, for around £27m last week, and despite Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero both returning to fitness last time out, another player has been lined up for transfer.

Indeed, according to Italian outlet Il Resto Del Carlino – via Sport Witness – Tottenham have made contact with Bologna concerning defender Riccardo Calafiori, who only signed for his Serie A side from FC Basel for €4m (£3m) in the summer, with Juventus, AC Milan, and Napoli also named as suitors.

A deal would not be easy and a summer transfer might be more likely if a breakthrough cannot be found shortly, but there is genuine interest there from the Lilywhites.

Riccardo Calafiori profiled

Italian Calfiori, aged 21, was a member of AS Roma's youth ranks but failed to make his mark, playing 18 times before being sold to Switzerland to hone his skills with Basel.

After just one full campaign with the club, Calafiori returned to his homeland last year and has gone on to cement himself as a crucial member of Thiago Motta's squad, starting the past 15 Serie A matches in succession.

As per Sofascore, he has showcased his impressive skill set across said fixtures, completing 90% of his passes, making 1.9 interceptions, 1.5 tackles and a whopping 6.9 ball recoveries per game, also winning 71% of his aerial duels, the 6 foot titan has returned with a vengeance after failing to secure a spot in his boyhood club.

Described as a "brilliant little player" by journalist and U23 scout Antonio Mango, Calafiori might be in the fledgeling phase of his senior career but he is already demonstrating his ability to battle adversity, overcome setbacks and perform at a level that attracts some of Europe's standout outfits.

And there's a reason for this; away from his inner belief, Calafiori has the trappings of a complete, modern centre-back in the future, ranking among the top 4% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 16% for pass completion, the top 15% for progressive carries and the top 3% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

Such metrics bespeak the array of tools in his professional armoury and it's clear that Postecoglou is targeting defenders of such a style, hence the swift conclusion of the Dragusin saga.

Why Tottenham should sign Calafiori

Hailed for his "complete & dominant" style by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Dragusin brings both aggression and adroitness to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Having chalked up 62 appearances for Genoa since leaving Juventus with just four senior showings to his name, the 13-cap Romania international has undergone a similar trend to Calafiori thus far in his career, assuming the Lilywhites do secure the latter's signature this year.

Both failing to secure prominent roles in their prestigious Italian outfits after rising from the youth ranks, Postecoglou's talent radar is highlighted for its astuteness and accuracy once again.

Dragusin, across 19 Serie A appearances this term, only completed 83% of his passes but did win 67% of his total duels, showcasing his robustness and confidence defensively both aerially and on the ground.

He also ranks among the top 10% of positional peers for goals scored and the top 9% for shots taken per 90, highlighting an attacking ability that will add a dimension to the Tottenham team.

Calafiori would bring this too, but in a very different way, with his creativity and invention from the defensive third enhancing the fluency at the north London club, capable of digging in to rebuff danger or surge forward to influence attacking sequences at his manager's behest.

With Eric Dier signing for Bayern Munich this month too, augmenting the rearguard with one more acquisition seems far more clear, and at a youthful age, Calafiori would be content with playing a peripheral role and working his way toward the forefront.

Dragusin might have only just arrived in Tottenham white but there's no doubt he's a high-class talent, brought in to provide Postecoglou's backline with the depth it needs to flourish.

Making a move for Calafiori makes sense, completing the defence and continuing the trend of plucking players from Serie A, and in recent memory, few have gone on to flop down the N17.

Can Sunrisers Hyderabad sort out their middle-order issues?

Both teams are coming off losses in their most recent match, and both have six points from five games so far

The Preview by Varun Shetty07-Apr-20196:47

Can hosts Kings XI tame Sunrisers?

Big pictureSunrisers Hyderabad have the reputation of being a model franchise. They also possess a middle order that has long had the reputation of being their weakest link. Heading into their next fixture against Kings XI Punjab at Mohali, these two dimensions will be in focus: will the franchise’s ethos, built on balance and positivity, help them come back from a humiliating 40-run defeat chasing 137, like it has in the past? Or will we see a more deadpan reaction, a reshuffle and fortification of the batting beyond their blockbuster opening pair? They’re close to the halfway point of seven matches in the season, the fixtures around which the tone for the final stages is set – that frenzied, volatile period during which certain teams specialise in sneaking in and rattling the favourites.Kings XI have often been that team in the IPL, but have begun this season looking much better than a late-doors spoilsport. They have six points from five games, but have only really been below-par on one occasion, when they doled out schoolboy errors to lose by 28 runs to Kolkata Knight Riders.Form guide

Kings XI: Lost to Super Kings by 22 runs, beat Capitals by 14 runs, beat Mumbai by eight wickets
Sunrisers: Lost to Mumbai by 40 runs, beat Capitals by five wickets, beat Royal Challengers by 118 runs

Both teams have the same number of points in the same number of games, and are both coming in after losses. Are Kings XI overachieving? Are Sunrisers underachieving? That assessment will have to wait till after this game, which will divide the table into an eight-point chunk and a six-point chunk.Siddarth Kaul looks on in awe as Rashid Khan spins a different kind of ball•BCCIPrevious meetingWhen they last met, Sunrisers’ top order failed and a Manish Pandey fifty took them to 132 for 6. This is unlikely to change despite David Warner’s excellent record in Powerplays against spin – only one dismissal since 2016. However, if he’s paired with Sam Curran with the new ball, they could cause trouble to both openers. Warner averages 30 – his lowest – and has been out five times to left-arm seamers in the phase, while Bairstow has only 39 runs off 36 balls against spin. Manish Pandey is among the highest-paid players at Sunrisers and has been given a long rope by the management, as one of their elite domestic players. But his form has been on the decline since the start of 2018 and they could be well-served by giving him some time off. Rashid Khan has taken four wickets in five games, a below-par strike-rate for him. Sunrisers could get more wickets from him by leaving some of his overs for the slog overs where batsmen don’t have the luxury of playing him out. All his wickets this season have come in the 16-20 overs phase.Stats that matter Chris Gayle has fallen four times in eight innings to Sandeep Sharma and has only managed a strike rate of 107.4 against the swing bowler. Sunrisers’ middle order (4-6) has contributed less than half the runs as the top order (1-3) since the start of IPL 2018; that’s 26.4% in comparison to 60.52%. Kings XI have been the quickest-scoring team in the middle overs this season – they strike at 9.1 per over between overs 7 and 15, whereas Sunrisers score at 8.2. Both of them have scored at 9.4 in the slog overs, but Sunrisers have been far ahead of Kings XI’s 7.4 in the Powerplay with 9.4. For batsmen facing at least 250 balls, Manish Pandey has the worst average – 22.78 – and boundary rate – 10.3 balls per boundary – since IPL 2018.

£100,000-per-week ace offered to Tottenham, Sherwood is a real fan

Tottenham Hotspur have been offered a chance to sign one club's "big name" player for manager Ange Postecoglou, with the Lilywhites giving a response.

Spurs moving to make early January signings

Postecoglou has long made public his desire for the north Londoners to make early January signings, with the Lilywhites already agreeing personal terms with defender Radu Dragusin of Genoa.

Tottenham are believed to be in talks to sign Dragusin and are attempting to reach an agreement. Meanwhile, a surprise development occurred today when Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg broke news of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner being on the verge of joining Spurs.

The German is apparently ready to make the move as Postecoglou's side move quickly in attempts to bolster both their attacking and defensive options.

Sky says Tottenham are weighing up offer for "role model" Dragusin alternative

Negotiations appear to be dragging on.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 6, 2024

Other reports suggest that Spurs are keen to make three January signings in the form of a defender, midfielder and forward, so if moves for both Dragusin and Werner come to fruition, Tottenham will have ticked both off their to-do list just days after the window's opening.

According to journalist Dean Jones, writing for GiveMeSport this week, Spurs have also been handed an opportunity to sign a "big name" player in the form of Raphinha.

Tottenham offered Raphinha chance from Barcelona

Indeed, as per his information, Raphinha has been pushed towards Tottenham, but Jones says it is a player offer which Spurs haven't chosen to take.

This isn't surprising given the recent revelations surrounding Werner's imminent reported move to N17, but it's believed a "similar situation" could crop up in regard to Borussia Dortmund's Donyell Malen.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

For the sake of argument, if Raphinha is edged towards Spurs again in the summer, we believe he could still be a fairly interesting option given Werner's move is a six-month loan.

In the event Tottenham choose not to sign the former Chelsea star, Barca's £100,000-per-week alternative could be an excellent choice to take Werner's place given his proven Premier League experience.

The Brazilian was once a star for Leeds, with ex-Spurs boss Tim Sherwood calling him "phenomenal".

Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, speaking to Football Insider in 2021, also branded him a "relentless" player.

“He is a player now who continuously has an effect on a game, in a positive way. Even if he is not on the scoresheet, he will have played a hand in the goal. He is relentless," said Whelan.

“He gets on the ball, has great balance, is very dynamic and he takes the game to the opposition. What impresses me is that he is not afraid to do the horrible side. I get more and more impressed by his worth ethic.”

Arsenal can sign Rodri 2.0 in £100m ace who’s "better than Caicedo"

Arsenal are enjoying another thrilling season of football this year and with 17 games gone, they currently find themselves atop the Premier League table with just one game to go until Christmas – a first vs second clash at Anfield.

Mikel Arteta's men might not be quite as free-flowing as they were last year, but their seriously impressive defensive displays have put them in pole position to end their two-decade title drought if they can maintain their current trajectory.

The board looks set to do all they can to help with that, as the latest player touted for a move to the Emirates could become the Gunners' own Rodri, and he has been far more impressive than Chelsea's Moises Caicedo to boot – Douglas Luiz.

Arsenal can sign the next Saliba in "insane" star who could fetch £86m

The young Dutchman could become one of the best defenders in the world.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Dec 19, 2023 Arsenal transfer news – Douglas Luiz

According to ESPN, Arsenal are looking to shuffle their midfield setup in the January window and are seriously interested in adding Aston Villa's maestro to their ranks.

The Brazilian midfielder was the subject of two failed bids from the Gunners last summer but signed a new deal with the Villans in October 2022, which is set to run until 2026.

With three years to run on his current deal and his importance to the Claret and Blue, the transfer is likely going to be very costly, with former England international Joe Cole telling TNT Sports (via the Mirror) that he expects the 25-year-old to move for a fee comparable to Caicedo and Declan Rice, so in the £100m range.

Douglas Luiz celebrates for Aston Villa

The former Chelsea man seems to believe he is worth it, though, saying: "He has been performing in the same league as them, performing better than Caicedo, arguably."

And with how well he measures up to Manchester City's Rodri, it would be hard to disagree.

Douglas Luiz could be Arsenal's Rodri

Now, some might argue that the outstanding performances of summer signing Rice suggest there is no need for the club to go and break the bank for a player like Luiz. Still, his arrival would allow the Englishman to move into a left-eight role and have an even more significant impact on the game.

Furthermore, FBref has named Rodri the seventh most similar player to the former City midfielder across Europe's top five leagues, which is quite the compliment considering everything the Spaniard has achieved at the Etihad.

This similarity is evident when you compare the pair alongside Caicedo to test Cole's claim that the Villa star is outperforming the Ecuadorian.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion ace – who was linked with a move to the Emirates over the summer – comes last in every important comparative metric, while the other two trade blows and come out on top in various statistics.

Rather surprisingly, Luiz and Rodri produce the exact same non-penalty expected goals and assists figures, while the former is far more likely to cross the ball and the latter more likely to recover the ball.

Their defensive output isn't too far off either, with the "underrated" Luiz, as described by former Arsenal player Paul Merson, winning more of his tackles but Rodri making more tackles and interceptions overall.

Ultimately, if Arsenal can get this deal done, they absolutely should, as the opportunity to sign a Rodri-esque player doesn't come around often, and Rice would be given that bit more freedom to get involved in the attack as well.

Arteta must replace "anonymous" Arsenal flop who’s worse than Havertz

One normal weekend of Barclays, that’s all Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal team were left asking for on Saturday evening.

This season has seen an unparalleled amount of attention on the PGMOL and Howard Webb’s merry band of referees.

The standard of officiating in this country has seemingly plummeted to an all time low. Apologies have made, statements have been shared left, right and centre, and yet still decisions are being made incorrectly.

Arteta may well need to look closer to home for why they lost 1-0 to Newcastle at a raucous St James’ Park this weekend, but the officiating for both sides left a lot to be desired.

A ridiculous and untimely challenge from Kai Havertz in the first half could have warranted a red card on another day while Bruno Guimaraes could have been sent for an early bath too after deliberately using his forearm to hit Jorginho in the back of the head.

The biggest moment of controversy, however, came when Newcastle took the lead.

How Arsenal lost to Newcastle

Truth be told, the Gunners didn’t play too badly in the north east on Saturday night.

A rigid and organised defence that had kept a clean sheet against Manchester City was on display again while Declan Rice’s powerhouse nature ensured Arteta’s men won the midfield battle.

However, it was in attack where they were lacking. A 0-0 draw would have been a fair result until a moment of chaos ensued just after the hour mark.

A stray shot from Jacob Murphy almost went out for a goal kick down by the corner flag but Joe WIllock, once of Arsenal himself, didn’t give it up. On the angle we were given during the TV coverage, it looked as though the ball was out. Alas, that was one of three VAR decisions that was seen as fine after Anthony Gordon had scored from close range.

A flighted ball in was missed by David Raya and couldn’t be dealt with by Gabriel who was seemingly shoved to the ground by Joelinton. No foul was adjudged to have been made. The next decision was assessing whether Gordon was onside.

The VAR claimed he was, although Arteta wasn’t happy, launching an aggressive series of vocal attacks towards the officials in his post-match press conference.

Indeed, he could blame the officiating all he likes, but the fact of the matter is that a number of players in red and white let him down.

Arsenal’s worst player vs Newcastle

After a £65m move from Chelsea in the summer much has been expected of Havertz but it was his ludicrous tackle in the first half that nearly put Arsenal down a man.

It was a big evening for the German who was given more of a creative role with Martin Odegaard missing through injury. Create he did not. In fact, he only served to frustrate more as the Gunners failed to score.

A large part of their failings in offensive areas was also down to the average performance of Eddie Nketiah.

A week ago the club’s number 14 was in inspired from against Sheffield United, netting his first Premier League hat-trick.

It was a display that saw him become the club’s joint top goal scorer this season alongside Odegaard and Bukayo Saka. That fact doesn’t tell the full story though.

At home, Nketiah offers the ability to hold the ball up and run the channels. He doesn’t set the world alight but his performance levels are generally sufficient.

Away from home, however, the English striker has been the definition of mediocre. In 52 league outings on the road, he’s only found the net five times. For a team chasing a Premier League title that simply isn’t good enough.

It was feels harsh to criticise someone who’s scored three only a week ago but barring that, Arsenal need to see a lot more from Nketiah while Gabriel Jesus is out injured.

On Saturday, he struggled for any real service and was starved of the ball. That said, he very rarely made himself available.

As per FotMob, Nketiah only registered 33 touches of the ball, just one more than Raya and completed 16 passes, the worst of any starter for Arsenal, including the enigmatic Havertz. Even substitute Oleksandr Zinchenko made more with 30. Only two of those passes, meanwhile, were in the final third. Worrying for your focal point in attack.

To make matters worse, the forward managed one shot, which was off target, and failed to complete either of his two attempted dribbles.

On top of that, the 24-year-old won 33% of his ground duels and 40% of his aerial duels as the Newcastle defenders well and truly bullied him. It was hardly a surprise to see his display get labelled as "anonymous" by some, including Arseblog's Andrew Allen.

This was not a night to savour for Nketiah who offered very little in attack. With the academy graduate largely underwhelming and Jesus’ fitness record inconsistent, the purchase of a new striker could well be looming in January. Such an eventuality may well determine whether Arteta’s men have what it takes to win the title.

Crystal Palace have now made pre-January approach for "valuable" forward

Crystal Palace have reportedly made some pre-January moves for one club's "valuable" forward as manager Roy Hodgson targets new attacking options.

Palace slump to defeat at Luton

The Eagles have now lost four of their last five Premier League games and look like real contenders to fall into the relegation battle as things stand, especially with the injury crisis worsening.

Despite Michael Olise's curling screamer from outside the area, which comes as an arguable goal of the season contender, Palace suffered a 2-1 defeat away to newly-promoted Luton Town and really put into question their credentials of remaining a top flight side past this season.

“I congratulate them [Luton]. I thought they worked very hard for their victory," said Hodgson after Palace's loss to Luton (via cpfc.co.uk). “I think we can feel ourselves a little bit unlucky. We could have had some good moments in the game and certainly we asked some very tough questions of their goalkeeper [Thomas Kaminski], who had an outstanding game on the day.

“In that last 10 or 15 minutes, when we were pushing for an equaliser, I thought we were going to get that equaliser on at least three occasions, but it didn’t come, and I congratulate Luton for their valiant effort. They really did put an awful lot of work and effort into getting that victory, so we have to accept that we weren’t good enough to get the points we thought we could get from this game.”

Hodgson's men are also among the division's lowest scoring sides, which will come as an alarming statistic and one which highlights their need for reinforcements in the January transfer window. Palace are reportedly targeting striker Karim Konate of Red Bull Salzburg as one option, while reports suggest Hodgson could land Borussia Dortmund starlet Youssoufa Moukoko.

Palace make approach for Murphy

Now, another option to have found his way on to Palace's transfer radar is Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy. The 28-year-old has been praised by Eddie Howe as the "ultimate professional", who publicly endorsed his quality when speaking to the press earlier this year.

"He's someone who is the ultimate professional. He's reliable, plays multiple positions and has never let me down," said Howe.

"For me, it's all about consistency. What you're looking for from the players' perspective is that they turn up every day and give their best. It's great to see someone who puts that work in rewarded with an opportunity, and then it's all about taking that opportunity."

According to Football Insider, Palace have made an approach for Murphy in the form of an enquiry and are lining up a potential January move for him. The report describes him as a "valuable squad player" for Howe and Newcastle, which has apparently done enough to attract serious interest from Hodgson and Nottingham Forest.

Over his nine appearances this season, Murphy has actually scored once and racked up four assists – indicating that the Englishman can weigh in with crucial contributions on his day.

Spurs could unearth the next Gazza in academy star who "glides past people"

Tottenham Hotspur have a notable reputation for nurturing their academy prospects, turning their starlets into notable first-teamers who go on to have celebrated careers in the game.

The obvious example is of course Harry Kane, once just a youth player with humble beginnings before going on to surpass all expectations, becoming Tottenham's top scorer in their history with an astounding 278 goals in total which saw him go above the great Jimmy Greaves.

Glenn Hoddle, Ledley King and many more have all stepped up to the mark too when a first-team opportunity came calling after developing as a youth player with Spurs, King actually staying put at Spurs for the entirety of his playing career.

Tottenham will hope they can have their next superstar in the making with 16-year-old Mikey Moore, likened to Paul Gascoigne by ex-Spurs striker Jermain Defoe recently for his ability to "glide past people" with ease.

A closer look at Tottenham's academy sensation, Mikey Moore

Born in 2007 – the same year Harry Kane was still just a youngster at Spurs – Moore is being touted as the next best thing in Tottenham quarters.

The young forward even appeared on the Guardian's Next Gen List released at the start of the month, a list that picks the best of the best involving emerging youngsters in football.

Switching between playing at left wing position and an out-and-out centre forward, Moore has been a revelation at U18 level for Spurs the past couple of seasons.

His goalscoring prowess has come to the forefront particularly in the last few weeks, netting a remarkable seven goals from six starts including a further four assists – Moore singlehandedly able to win games for his side up top.

Last time out versus Norwich City, he scored a hat-trick and supplied two assists as the rampant U18 Spurs side won 7-2 with Moore virtually impossible for the opposition defenders to contain and thwart.

It's no surprise to see outlandish suggestions that Moore could well be the next Gazza for Spurs therefore, Defoe stating as such whilst appearing on the No Tippy Tappy Podcast when Moore was only 15.

Paul Gascogine plays for England vs Scotland in Euro 96.

He said: "It’s a big statement, but he reminds me of Gazza a little bit, the way he glides past people, it’s easy and he’s doing it at 15. Hopefully we see him in the Premier League soon."

Such praise has resulted in Spurs tieing down Moore to a new bumper contract, the five-time England U17 international signing on the dotted line to extend his time with Tottenham until 2026 to deter any potential suitors from attempting to buy the teenage starlet.

A bright future lies ahead for Tottenham's Mikey Moore…

It's too early to say whether or not the 16-year-old will go on to have an esteemed career with longetivity, Moore is still a teenager learning and developing in the youth ranks.

Ange Postecoglou also won't want to fast-track him into the senior fold in case it hampers his progression, with Moore perfectly comfortable playing regularly for the U18's at this moment in time.

Moore will just want to continue his dazzling current form, the youngster twisting and turning defenders for fun regularly whilst also remaining clinical in front of goal

Only time will tell if Moore can reach the heights of Gazza, with the former England hero – who won the FA Cup and scored 33 goals in 112 games for the club – having been an 'icon of his generation', as per Spurs' official website.

Trying to emulate the enigmatic and balletic playmaker is no small feat, but if Moore is this highly thought of at just 16 years of age, the heights he could possibly get to are frightening.
