Jamieson says “everyone’s ready to go” and “push for a win”
Alan Gardner05-Jun-2021Tim Southee said New Zealand had not given up on the possibility of forcing victory at Lord’s, despite a day being lost to rain. The visiting side have made the running in the first Test, with Southee’s six-wicket haul helping them to a 103-run lead, but England were kept afloat by a battling hundred from Rory Burns.Southee picked up five of the eight England wickets to fall on the fourth day, claiming a spot on the Lord’s honours board for the second time in his career. However, Burns’ efforts in compiling 132 from 297 balls helped repel New Zealand after they reduced England to 140 for 6 – still more than 200 in arrears – during the morning session.New Zealand needed to force the pace, and were immediately up and running when Kyle Jamieson found the outside edge of England captain Joe Root with his opening delivery. Burns and Root had lifted England from trouble on day two, before rain further checked New Zealand’s advance on Friday but, following Jamieson’s breakthrough, an inspired spell from Southee saw three wickets fall without addition to the score.Related
Tim Southee, Rory Burns dominate hard-fought fourth day
Rory Burns earned this recall, and needed this innings
Burns then dug in to add a valuable 63-run stand with Ollie Robinson, and another 52 for the last wicket alongside James Anderson – although he could have been stumped on 77 and was dropped at slip on 88.”Yeah, with the wicket of Joe Root from the first ball of the day, we probably couldn’t ask for a better start,” Southee said. “It was a dream start to take those early wickets but we knew there was going to be a counterpunch from England at some stage, they’re too good a side just to roll over.”Their lower order, especially Robinson, played a nice hand there, and Jimmy hanging around with Burns at the end, putting on over 50, blunted our attack towards the end. But I think if we’d turned up at the start of the day and been told we’re gonna walk off in the position we’re in now we’d have been pretty happy.Tim Southee ended with 6 for 43 and bowled eight maidens•AFP via Getty Images
“Losing yesterday doesn’t help, but there’s 98 overs tomorrow and it’s always great to turn up on the last day with all results possible. Who knows what may happen but it’s great to be in a position where we can push on. You play to win Test matches for your country and a Test win at Lord’s would be pretty special, so I’d imagine we’ll chat overnight, get together as a side and come up with a plan for day five.”Jamieson, who bagged three wickets, wasn’t too harsh on his team-mates for giving Burns a couple of chances and concurred with Southee on going for the win.”Ideally you want to take those chances; games don’t always pan out perfectly the way you want them to,” Jamieson said after the day’s play. “I certainly don’t believe that there’s time taken from the game in terms of us not being able to push for a win. We’re still ahead in this game. I guess we have the ability to control how this game is set up in the first session tomorrow and probably having that rest on day three, everyone’s ready to go for tomorrow and we’ll certainly push for a win, that’s for sure.”It’s a couple of sessions and there’s a Test victory on the line, I have no doubt that all of us will be pushing as hard as we can and just see that we get through. There’s nothing guaranteed if you bring that attitude but without a doubt we’ll certainly be bringing that, that’s for sure.”New Zealand were missing Southee’s regular new-ball partner Trent Boult for this match, but have had more than enough firepower to keep England in check. Southee’s figures of 6 for 43 bettered the 6 for 50 he claimed at Lord’s in 2013, and he may yet have the chance to help his side push for a first win on the ground this century.”Any time you contribute to the side and do your job it’s very satisfying, and I guess it’s that little bit sweeter when you do it at such a special ground like Lord’s,” he said. “It was a nice day today, and looking forward to getting out there again tomorrow at some stage.”Playing his seventh Test and his first outside New Zealand, Jamieson said he had learnt a lot from Southee, who was playing his 78th, about specific skills and the workings of Test cricket at a broader level.”I think just around the ebbs and flows of Test cricket,” Jamieson said. “Like we’ve spoken a lot around skills like wrist position, moving the ball, when to come wide of the crease. We’re always having conversations around the tactical side of the game. But it’s just an understanding of how Test cricket works. When you’ve played 70-odd Tests, you learn how Test cricket tends to flow and when there’s times when things don’t happen as quickly and as good and about staying patient and on the opposite end of the spectrum when things are happening and you put the hammer down. So those intricacies around the flow of Test cricket is the biggest thing for me.”0410 GMT: The story was updated with Kyle Jamieson’s quotes after an embargo

WHAT HAPPENED?
A video shared by the BBC showed a suspect being arrested in the wake of the attack, where two people were killed including a child and 15 others seriously injured when a car ploughed into crowds at the Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg. More than 50 other people sustained less serious injuries.
Bayern Munich star Kane reacted to the shocking event, posting on Instagram that on nights like this, "football isn't what's most important" after his side beat RB Leipzig 5-1 on the same evening.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Reports suggest that the suspect, believed to be acting alone, is a 50-year-old Saudi citizen who had worked as a doctor and had been in Germany since 2006. Further details about this horrific attack are yet to be revealed, but alongside sportspeople like Kane, various other notable figures in Germany have already spoken out publicly, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz saying: "We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours."

WHAT NEXT FOR KANE?
An emphatic 5-1 home victory against RB Leipzig last night left Bayern Munich top of the Bundesliga, leading by seven points going into the German winter break after an impressive first half of the season. Bayer Leverkusen could close the gap to four points with a win against Freiburg on Saturday, but Kane's side will still hold the title race advantage whatever happens.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have managed to keep their key assets at the club so far, but with less than a month left of the summer transfer window, might Gary O’Neil be forced to cash in on one?
Pedro Neto is attracting plenty of attention of late, with Wolves reportedly looking to accept bids of around £60m for one of their star players.
Tottenham Hotspur appear to be keen on luring the winger to London, according to Fabrizio Romano, via GIVEMESPORT.
If he moves, O’Neil will need to bring in a replacement. Could he already be closing in on one?
Wolves looking to sign Croatian winger
According to reports in Croatia, via 24Sata, Wolves have made an offer of around €8m (£7m) to secure the signing of Marco Pasalic from Rijeka this summer.
With interest in Neto soaring as the window edges closer to its final weeks, there is no doubt the Old Gold will need to bring in another wide option, and it looks as though Pascalic is high on the list.
Pedro Neto and Joao Gomes
For just £7m, O’Neil is certainly not trying to break the bank, which means he could have funds to improve other areas of his team.
Marco Pasalic’s 2023/24 season in numbers
The 23-year-old shone for Rijeka last term. Across 41 games in all competitions, the Croatian gem scored nine goals while grabbing five assists. A solid return for his club.
Among his teammates, Pasalic ranked fourth for goals and assists (eight) in the Croatian top flight, along with ranking second for shots on target per game (0.8), fourth for big chances created (three) and first for successful dribbles per game (1.6), showcasing his talents across a range of attacking metrics.

In comparison, Neto posted 11 goal contributions in the Premier League, while averaging 0.6 shots on target, registering seven big chances and succeeding with 1.9 dribbles per game.
These statistics show that the pair are fairly similar when it comes to attacking output, which means Pasalic could be a perfect replacement for Neto next season.
O’Neil clearly won't want to lose a talent like the Portuguese gem, but for £60m, it would provide a vital cash injection into the club which could allow the manager to bolster several other areas of his first-team squad.
Pasalic has still to enter his peak years but, having made appearances for Borussia Dortmund during the 2022/23 campaign, he clearly has the required ability to shine in a top-five European league.
He could certainly be a surprise addition to the Old Gold this summer, but the Croatian gem has proven he knows where the back of the net is, while also being able to generate chances for others in the final third.
If O’Neil can keep the likes of Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-Chan at the club, then Wolves will most likely finish higher than 14th place next term, no doubt about that.

The BBL opener was delayed by rain and lightning in Perth but eventually 11 overs a side were played

Babar Azam struggled to handle a bouncy Optus Stadium surface in a tough BBL initiation, before in-form Cooper Connolly stole the show to power Perth Scorchers to a five-wicket victory over rival Sydney Sixers. In a truncated tournament season-opener, reduced to 11 overs per side, Babar could not get going. He made just 2 off 5 balls in an anti-climactic BBL debut. Sixers did recover, with a stunning assault in the backend, to finish with 113 for 5.But it proved not enough in good batting conditions – despite the earlier inclement weather – as Connolly starred with 59 off 31 balls. The knock came on the back of his strong recent efforts for Australia and Australia A.Just two days before the IPL auction – where he is fancied to earn a maiden deal – Connolly did his chances no harm. Batting at No. 3, Connolly whacked five sixes in a reminder of his x-factor ability, which has seen him likened to Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head.He completely dominated a 48-run fourth-wicket partnership with skipper Ashton Turner, before holing out with nine runs needed off nine balls. His absence from the crease did not matter, as Scorchers hauled down the target with five balls to spare.Heavy rain and lightning caused the start of the match to be delayed by 80 minutes. The downpour meant the covers were used for the first time for a BBL game at Optus Stadium since the ground opened in 2018.Aaron Hardie took the first wicket of the new season•Paul Kane/Getty Images
Once the game got going, with the ground’s drainage having worked wonders, Babar entered the crease after Sixers were sent into bat. There was much anticipation for Babar’s BBL debut, who headlines a slew of Pakistan stars taking part in this season’s tournament. But Babar, sporting 056 on the back of his magenta jersey, struggled to handle the extra bounce and trudged off the ground before the end of the third over.Babar was lucky to survive two near chances on his third and fourth deliveries, but off the latter, he did score his first BBL runs, when he sliced just past two fielders in the cover region. His luck quickly ran out on the next ball when he hit a hard length delivery from quick Brody Couch straight to mid-on.Sixers were reeling at 15 for 2, with opener Daniel Hughes having already fallen for a duck in the first over. But they recovered strongly through muscular batting from Josh Philippe, Lachlan Shaw and Jack Edwards, who bludgeoned 46 off 21 balls to lift Sixers to respectability.A new-look Scorchers attack, boasting recruits Couch and Joel Paris, fell away after a bright start when they had Sixers in big trouble at 41-4.Even though Sixers’ total ballooned, Scorchers were confident given the hard surface and lightning outfield. The fans in the terraces, many of whom were garbed in orange, were giddy over the prospect of power-hitters Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen joining forces at the top of the order. But Marsh, who had played just one BBL game in the past three seasons, fell for a third ball duck when he edged seamer Charlie Stobo to a leaping Babar, who took a fine catch above his head at first slip.Allen had electrified the Scorchers faithful almost exactly 12 months ago with a first-ball six to launch his BBL career, but he was more circumspect to begin with, before launching Edwards for two huge sixes in the third over.Allen, though, could not kick on after holing out to offspinner Todd Murphy for 16. But the wickets proved to be just blips, as Connolly took over with a slew of audacious strokes in a whirlwind knock, which undoubtedly caught the attention of IPL power brokers.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Substitute Michael Obafemi's 82nd-minute goal ensured Plymouth took all three points against Portsmouth in a huge clash at the bottom of the table. Pompey thought they had scored in the first minute but saw Regan Poole's goal ruled out for offside. Plymouth then went on to clinch a crucial victory when Obafemi raced onto a long goal kick, outmuscled his defender and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid. The victory is the Pilgrims' first in five Championship games and also a first clean sheet in the league in 2024-25.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Plymouth's disappointing run of form had seen the pressure build on manager Rooney but he has seen his team move out of the relegation places and into 20th in the table with Tuesday's win. It's a different story entirely for Portsmouth who stay bottom and are five points from safety after 14 games played.
WHAT ROONEY SAID
He told : "It was a really important game tonight. it wasn't the best game from our point of view but I stressed to the players before it's important we come away with three points. A clean sheet obviously helps that. It's important we dig in and find a way to win and we did that tonight so I'm really pleased. Chattogram clear at the top while Barishal, Rajshahi battle for playoff spot

Parvez Hossain Emon is all smiles•BCB
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFortune Barishal aced a tall chase of 221 against Minister Rajshahi, a game that lit up the Bangabandhu T20 Cup. Rajshahi would be wondering what they would have to do to turn their fortunes around after suffering their fourth straight defeat, despite their captain Najmul Hossain Shanto hitting 109. But it was Parvez Hossain Emon, the Under-19 World Cup-winner, who struck the winning runs with a cover-driven boundary, that took him to his maiden century and Barishal home with 11 balls to spare.Having arrived at the crease in the fifth over, Emon had a rampant Tamim Iqbal at the other end, who had already added 44 runs in 4.3 overs with Saif Hassan, the latter blasting 27 off 15 balls. Emon struck nine fours and seven sixes in his 42-ball hurricane that contained plenty of power-hitting down the ground, as well as well-timed cross-bat shots. He didn’t let up on picking up the ones and twos.Tamim later said that when Emon struck Farhad Reza for three sixes and a four in the 13th over, reducing the runs required to win to 62 from 86, he brisk hitting got Barishal back in the game. Emon’s batting was particularly impressive after Tamim’s dismissal, when Barishal still needed 60 runs in 6.4 overs.Tamim, who had struck five fours and a six in his 37-ball 53, while adding 117 runs for the second with Emon, fell in the 14th over. It was followed by Emon and Afif Hossain adding 60 runs for the unbroken third-wicket stand, with the latter contributing an unbeaten 26 off 16 balls.Rajshahi had posted the formidable 220 for 7 in 20 overs following a 131-run opening stand. Shanto equalled Tamim’s record of 11 sixes in a Bangabandhu T20 Cup match, most by a Bangladeshi batsman, during his 55-ball 109. His opening partner Anisul Islam Emon made 69 off 39 balls with seven fours and three sixes, before Kamrul Islam Rabbi took his first T20 hat-trick in the last over.Barishal and Rajshahi are now level on points with one playoff place still undecided.Shamsur Rahman threads one through the off side•SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images
Gazi Group Chattogram 162 for 7 (Shamsur 45*, Joy 24, Shakib 2-30) beat Gemcon Khulna 157 for 9 (Shuvagata 32*, Jahurul 26, Shoriful 3-34) by three wickets Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShamsur Rahman was cool and calculated in taking Gazi Group Chattogram to a three-wicket win against Gemcon Khulna. Their grab of the scrappy contest was their fifth win in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, putting them clear on top of the points table with two matches left to play.Khulna, who remain in second place with eight points, let the game slip in the last three overs in which they had to defend 37 runs.Shamsur, who saw Chattogram lose four wickets for 49 runs in seven overs in the middle of their innings, struck two beautiful fours at the end of the 18th over, before Nahidul Islam struck Shuvagata Hom for two crucial sixes in the penultimate over. Although he got out off the last ball, he left Chattogram to take nine runs off the last over.Mustafizur Rahman swung at his second delivery to get a boundary in the last over, before they exchanged three singles, much to the dismay of Chattogram coach Mohammad Salahuddin who signalled that Shamsur could have hit the ball harder off the fourth ball. With two required off the last ball, Shamsur swung Al-Amin Hossain over the square-leg boundary for a six. When Khulna batted first, their innings was meandering to nowhere when Shuvagata Hom, usually a middle-order batsman but sent down to No. 9 in this game, got hold of it in the 17th over. He struck six fours and a flat pulled six in his 14-ball unbeaten 32, as Khulna added 38 valuable runs in the last three overs. Until that point, Chattogram had kept the Khulna batsmen in check.Left-arm quick Shoriful Islam mixed his lengths very well, removing Zakir Hasan and Jahurul Islam with bouncers while Mahmudullah was suckered out of the crease before missing the pinpoint yorker. Apart from Shoriful’s three wickets, Mustafizur Rahman took two wickets while Mosaddek Hossain and Ziaur Rahman took one each.
Rangers have held "discussions" with an exciting young attacking player over a summer move to Ibrox, according to a fresh transfer update.
Rangers transfer news
Philippe Clement will know the importance of a productive summer transfer window, with fine margins ultimately the difference between his side and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race last season. The Hoops arguably had a little more squad depth and experience when the crunch period arrived, and the hope is that the Gers learn from that heartbreak.
It has already been a strong period since the campaign reached its conclusion, with several quick signings made by Rangers, including Oscar Cortes, Jefte and Connor Barron. It has immediately strengthened the depth and ability at Clement's disposal, but further additions are being mooted, too.
Oscar Cortes
Coventry City midfielder Callum O'Hare enjoyed an impressive 2023/24 season in the Championship, scoring six goals and registering three assists, and he has been linked with a switch to Ibrox this summer. Meanwhile, Flavius Daniliuc has also emerged as a potential addition for the Gers in the approaching weeks and months, with the 23-year-old Salernitana centre-back considered an improvement on Connor Goldson.
Long-term planning is important at Ibrox, too, and a new update suggests that the Scottish giants are eyeing up an exciting talent who could have a big future in the game.
Rangers hold talks with 16-goal ace
According to The Secret Scout on X, Rangers are among a host of clubs who want to sign Middlesbrough striker Ajay Matthews this summer:
"Middlesbrough 18-year-old striker Ajay Matthews set to leave this summer. Some of the clubs that have held discussions and hopeful of signing him include. Celtic, Rangers, Southampton, Brighton, Brentford, Newcastle."
Matthews may be something of an unknown to Rangers supporters, considering he is a young footballer making waves at youth team level, but that's not to say that he couldn't be an excellent signing for Clement.
At just 18, the Middlesbrough ace has outlined his potential with 16 goals in 17 starts for Boro's youth side in 2023/24, showing what a prolific attacking player he is. He has also made two appearances for the first team, going to show that he has been trusted at senior level, despite his tender years.
For now, Matthews would likely go straight into the youth setup at Rangers if he did make the move there, but there is no reason why he couldn't become a regular member of the senior squad if he showcased his quality from the off.
Scotland would still be at the Euros if 14-cap Rangers target started
Scotland suffered yet another case of glorious failure in a major international tournament.
ByRoss Kilvington Jun 24, 2024
If the Gers want to pip Celtic to league title glory next term, it is clear that experienced attacking players will need to be added – Abdallah Sima could possibly make his loan move from Brighton permanent, although that remains to be seen – but the importance of snapping up talented British youngsters should never be ignored.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to take drastic action to sign a star defender for Manchester United this summer.
Man Utd transfer for defender blocked
The Red Devils and INEOS are yet to make a marquee signing after deciding to keep Erik ten Hag as manager, although Ratcliffe has warned fans the club will need two or three summer windows to complete a rebuild of the playing squad.
"I don't think the solution is to buy an Mbappe. We are more grassroots than that. One player is not going to solve the problem at Manchester United. The first thing we need to do is build a balanced squad and ultimately maybe top it off with one or two players like Mbappe. It will take two or three summer windows to get to a better place.”
Man Utd advancing in talks to sign £30m forward instead of Zirkzee

One area where the club do want to bolster is at centre-back, with Raphael Varane officially leaving at the end of the month. One name that has been mentioned in recent months is Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, however, despite talks being at an advanced stage.
Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that a deal is off due to Nice and Man Utd having the same ownership and playing in the same European competition next season.
Ratcliffe hasn’t been left happy at not being able to sign Todibo for the Red Devils, saying: “UEFA said we can sell him to another PL club, but we can't sell to Man Utd. But that's not fair on the player, and I don’t see what that achieves.”
Ratcliffe now ready to take Nice action to sign Todibo
Now, according to a new update from Football Insider, Ratcliffe is ready to sell his stake in Nice in order to sign Todibo for Man Utd. They state that ‘Ratcliffe is now prepared to sell his controlling share in Nice in order to ease the restrictions around multi-club ownership’.
Nice centre-back Jean-Claire Todibo.
Ratcliffe and INEOS have been in control of Nice since 2019, and it remains to be seen if they will retain a minority stake in the Ligue 1 side, should they sell up.
It looks as if the new Man Utd co-owner is willing to go above and beyond for Todibo, valued at £35m, with the 24-year-old recently saying when asked about a move to Old Trafford: “It's nice to hear all the compliments. I'm trying to stay focused on my game and my team-mates – but for sure I am open to playing in the Premier League. 'I'm going to keep that for me! Nice try.”
The transfer saga for Todibo could drag on for months, especially if Ratcliffe needs to sell his majority stake in France, making this one to watch.
