Berta a huge fan of £84m "Iniesta-esque" Arsenal target who he knows well

Arsenal’s incoming sporting director, Andrea Berta, is a huge fan of a “magic” midfielder he knows very well who is on the Gunners’ transfer radar, according to a report.

Berta set to join the Gunners

Finding a replacement for Edu has proven to be a long process, but the Gunners appear to have finally got their man, with Berta expected to make a move to the Emirates Stadium, despite interest from elsewhere.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed AC Milan were very keen on hijacking the deal, holding three meetings to persuade the 53-year-old to move to the San Siro, but north London was always his favoured destination.

The Italian has plans to take Mikel Arteta’s project to the next level, and one of his first tasks in the summer transfer window will be to sign a new striker, with a number of targets being identified.

Arsenal ahead of Liverpool in race to sign £71m striker who Wenger loves

ByDominic Lund Mar 17, 2025

Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak is the dream signing for the north Londoners, with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko also near the top of the list, but striker is not the only position in which they are keen to strengthen.

Berta is also planning to overhaul Arsenal’s midfield, and a report from The Boot Room has revealed he is a big fan of Atletico Madrid’s Pablo Barrios, as a result of their time working together in La Liga.

tletico Madrid's PabloBarriosin action with Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe

A £84m release clause in Barrios’ contract means he will not come cheap, but the Gunners could be keen, especially given that Berta holds the midfielder in very high regard.

That said, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi remains the top target in midfield, with talks over a deal for the 26-year-old still ongoing, and there is a determination to sign him quickly amid interest from other top clubs.

"Magic" Barrios could be a solid Zubimendi alternative

It is unclear whether Arsenal will be able to spend big on two top midfielders this summer, but there are signs the Atletico Madrid star could be a solid alternative to Zubimendi, should the Spaniard choose to move elsewhere.

The Madrid-born midfielder has emerged as a key player for Atletico this season, making 31 appearances in all competitions, and he is particularly adept defensively, ranking in the 88th percentile for interceptions per 90 over the past year compared to his positional peers.

Not only that, but the starlet has previously been likened to one of Spain’s greatest-ever midfielders, Andrés Iniesta, by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

At 21 years old, Barrios is five years Zubimendi’s junior, which may also appeal to Arsenal, but the release clause could prove to be a major stumbling block, with the requisite £84m fee making him much more expensive than the Real Sociedad star, who is valued at £50m.

Son replacement: Tottenham now increasingly likely to move for £42m winger

Tottenham Hotspur have started identifying potential replacements for Son Heung-min, and the idea of moving for an “unbelievable” forward is now gaining traction among the club’s hierarchy, according to a report.

Question marks over Son's future at Tottenham

Tottenham chose to renew Son’s contract until the summer of 2026 back in January, exercising an option for a one-year extension, but there are still question marks over the South Korean’s long-term future in north London.

Spurs have started to identify potential replacements for the winger, who is set to turn 33 in the summer, amid a slight drop-off in performance levels this season, having only scored seven goals in the Premier League.

Mathys Tel, who can be bought permanently for £45m this summer, is seen as an option, however, the Bayern Munich loanee has hardly set the world alight since arriving in the January transfer window, having failed to score a Premier League goal.

As such, according to a report from Spain, Tottenham have now chosen a different player as Son’s successor, with AFC Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo believed to be of interest, having impressed in the Premier League this season.

It is becoming increasingly likely Spurs will choose Semenyo as the heir to Son, who could decide to move on in the near future, with the Bournemouth star’s name often finding itself on the list of potential targets.

AFC Bournemouth's AntoineSemenyolooks on

The idea of signing the Ghanaian is now gaining traction among the hierarchy, with his versatility making him an ideal option for Ange Postecoglou, and there is a feeling he could be available for an affordable fee, when compared to other forwards on the market.

Reports from elsewhere have revealed Bournemouth could hold out for a fee of around £34m – £42m this summer, amid interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.

"Unbelievable" Semenyo could be a fantastic signing

First and foremost, Tottenham need to make sure they secure Son’s long-term future, considering the 32-year-old has still been their best-performing player in the Premier League this season, having managed to pick up 10 assists.

That said, it is clear that Spurs could do with some additional depth, given that injuries have left Postecoglou with limited options at times this season, and Semenyo could still be a fantastic addition to the squad.

In light of his impressive performances for Bournemouth this season, the 25-year-old has been lauded as “unbelievable” by members of the media, picking up seven goals and five assists in the Premier League.

It could be savvy business to sign a forward who is proven in the Premier League for as little as £34m, but extending Son’s contract should be viewed as a priority, given that his performances this season indicate he still has a lot left to give.

Worth even more than Piroe: Leeds must regret selling "sensational" star

With just 11 games to go in the Championship campaign this season, Leeds United currently sit three points clear of Sheffield United in their hunt to secure promotion – but doing so whilst winning the title.

The Whites’ form has been superb for large parts of the campaign, losing just three games to date, whilst also remaining unbeaten since the beginning of December.

Daniel Farke deserves a huge amount of credit for keeping the side competitive after numerous key departures over the summer after the play-off final defeat at Wembley.

The German will be looking to make it three second-tier title wins in England in the coming months, adding to the two he claimed during his time in charge of Norwich City.

However, if he is to achieve such a feat, he will likely rely on one player who’s so often produced the goods in the final third over the last couple of months.

Joel Piroe’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25

The striker role at Elland Road has been one that has brought about conversation over recent years, with numerous players struggling to fill the void in Yorkshire.

However, over the last few months, Dutchman Joel Piroe has nailed down the starting role in Farke’s side, repaying the boss for the faith shown in him to lead the line.

The 25-year-old has already netted 16 times in his 35 appearances, already scoring outscoring his tally from his debut campaign at the club following his £10m move in 2023.

However, Piroe hasn’t had his success without his doubters, often coming under fire for his displays, but it’s safe to say the supporters are reaping the rewards with his recent form in the final third.

Despite his impressive run for the Whites in recent times, he’s still valued lower than one player who the club may regret offloading after his form away from the club.

The former Leeds star who’s worth more than Piroe

Before their recent success over the last couple of years, Leeds found themselves in a tricky financial situation, which saw them offloading numerous first-team players to balance the books.

Lewis Cook was just one example who departed his boyhood side for just £6m, now starring for Bournemouth in the Premier League and potentially featuring in Europe amid the Cherries’ recent form.

Former Leeds midfielder Lewis Cook

However, another player who previously plied their trade in Yorkshire but is now playing in the top flight is winger Jack Clarke, who made his breakthrough for the Whites back in the 2018/19 season.

The now 24-year-old departed in an £8.5m deal to join Tottenham Hotspur after his breakthrough campaign but failed to make a single Premier League appearance during his time in North London.

He’s since recaptured his form at Sunderland, registering 28 goals and 21 assists for the Black Cats, leading to Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley dubbing him “sensational” for his time at the Stadium of Light.

He’s since moved to Ipswich Town, once again joining a Premier League outfit, but has struggled to carry his excellent form to Portman Road, registering three goals and five assists to date – but has still seen an increase in his market value.

Clarke is now valued at £12.4m by Transfermarkt, a figure that is higher than that of Piroe, who’s only valued at £11.5m despite his excellent goalscoring record this campaign.

Given the increase and recent form in England’s second tier, Leeds must regret parting ways with Clarke, potentially having another dimension in attack had they kept hold of the youngster.

Undoubtedly, he left at a time when financial problems were present in Yorkshire, but his ability in the final third could’ve provided the added cutting edge in their quest for promotion in the coming months.

Aston Villa plotting swoop to sign "revelation" they’ve already spoken to

Amid all of their success on the transfer front in the January window, Aston Villa did miss out on one particular midfield target who they’ve already reportedly set their sights on ahead of the summer.

Aston Villa transfer news

In pursuit of the Premier League’s top four, Aston Villa were in no mood to waste any time during the winter window. Showing the door to Diego Carlos and selling Jhon Duran for a much-needed hefty fee, the Midlands club instantly turned their attention towards welcoming Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Paris St Germain's MarcoAsensioduring the warm up before the match

Crucially, there is still plenty left to spend in the summer from that Duran deal which should ease Villa’s profit and sustainability concerns and allow them to reinforce Unai Emery’s squad on a permanent basis.

As for right now, Rashford, Disasi and Asensio don’t exactly represent poor business – particularly on loan. Rashford, especially, is one to watch.

After being cast aside by Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, the forward desperately needed a move and got just that in the dying embers. Now, it’s Villa who could benefit from getting him back to his best to hand themselves one of the most dangerous wingers in the Premier League.

Aston Villa also face battle to keep hold of "terrific" talent with Watkins

Arsenal are involved again…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 7, 2025

Looking ahead to the summer, meanwhile, those in the Midlands could look to spend their Duran money. According to The Boot Room, Aston Villa are now plotting a summer move to sign Alex Baena from Villarreal, having already spoken to the midfielder in the January transfer window before failing to reach an agreement with his club.

The 23-year-old would undoubtedly provide Emery with the long-term solution that a loan move for Rashford won’t provide at this stage. Given that Villa have already spoken to the Spaniard once, they will hope that it’s second time the charm when the summer arrives.

"Revelation" Baena is better than ever

Aston Villa’s reported interest is certainly arriving at the perfect time for Baena, who has been in better form than ever in the current campaign. At just 23 years old, this may just be the start too, meaning that the Villans should act sooner rather than later to secure his signature and welcome a permanent solution on Emery’s left-hand side.

Dubbed a “revelation” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig in 2022, the Spaniard has only improved even further since then – scoring five goals and assisting another five in 20 La Liga games so far this season.

As Baena has thrived, Emery has experimented with a number of players on the left-hand side of his sytem with all failing to hit the same heights whether it’s been Jacob Ramsey or the likes of John McGinn. And although Rashford may momentarily solve that issue, Baena should be Villa’s long-term target.

Ange has hit gold on Spurs "monster" who will soon be worth more than Kane

Ever since Ange Postecoglou arrived in north London, it’s been clear that his emphasis lies on attacking football that easy on the eye and overwhelming.

Tottenham Hotspur are an enigma – at their best, they are capable of giving top teams a hiding, but at their worst, are susceptible to the most ignominious of results or stuck on the wrong side of a basketball scoreline.

In fairness, Spurs were drained of colour and inspiration as Liverpool picked them apart in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Thursday, but Arne Slot’s side are probably the best team in the world right now, steamrolling through the season.

Naturally, Tottenham didn’t reach the end of the match without another cruel injury blow.

Richarlison added to the injury list

Ever since Postecoglou arrived, Tottenham have wanted to attack. This has been both a blessing and a curse. Son Heung-min is one of the finest forwards of his generation, but aged 32, he has struggled to match the desired intensity this term and has floundered with the cogs crashing around him.

It doesn’t help that his teammates keep getting picked off, with Richarlison unable to complete the Merseyside clash after pulling up with an issue as he was withdrawn before the break.

Postecoglou resignedly said that it was “another one to add to the list” after the fixture, with Richarlison set to return to the medical room only a month after returning from a hamstring problem that had ruled him out for two months.

Mathys Tel arrived on loan last week to add relief, but Spurs need Dominic Solanke to return from the infirmary if their attacking fluency is to be restored.

Spurs have struck gold on Dominic Solanke

Last month, Tottenham’s injury crisis deepened when Solanke pulled up with a knee injury that will take six weeks to recover from. He’s unlikely to return before the end of February.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke

Solanke is Tottenham’s club-record signing, brought in from Bournemouth last summer in a deal rising to £65m. Richarlison was the previous number one.

The belated Harry Kane replacement, 27, has posted 11 goals and 6 assists across 29 matches in all competitions this season. This is a decent return, built on the excellent campaign that convinced Daniel Levy to pay the big bucks, with Solanke notching 19 top-flight goals for the Cherries last year.

Solanke isn’t the most relentless of goalscorers, only averaging 2.59 shots per Premier League match this season, as per FBref, which puts him in the bottom 45% of strikers in the division.

He suffered from similar defects in his early days at the Vitality Stadium, with former teammate Junior Stanislas highlighting the many other areas that make him a top forward: “His quality was evident in training. His hold-up play, skills and willingness to run in behind – he was someone you always wanted on your team. He brought so much more than goals.”

Tottenham's most expensive signings of all time

A detailed look at Spurs’ 10 most expensive signings of all time.

ByCharlie Smith Sep 5, 2025

Spurs held off from signing a direct Kane successor last season, but Solanke is now proven as a well-thought-out option, bringing his own take on the No 9 role and not expected to bring the obscene strike record of his predecessor.

Moreover, five of his seven Premier League goals this season have come against teams in the top half of the table, with the other two bagged against Brentford and Manchester United (he also put two past the Red Devils as Spurs advanced to the Carabao Cup semis).

He’s a big-game player and a facilitator for teammates such as Son to find more space in the danger areas and wreak the kind of havoc that Postecoglou’s system, at full throttle, provides.

Described as a “pressing monster”, the England international will be a major player over the coming years and will be one of the biggest driving forces as Spurs push to escape from the rut that they are currently bogged in.

Before long, Spurs’ new striker might be worth more than the legendary Kane, whose £54m release clause at Bayern Munich becomes active during the 2026 January transfer window.

Kane, who turns 32 this summer, has scored 72 goals from 73 matches since joining Bayern from Tottenham in 2023, adding 28 assists. The Three Lions captain’s teammate, Jamal Musiala, has described him as “an incredible player, one of the best in the world”.

Certain fans might be tempted to voice hopes of Kane re-joining next summer when his release clause becomes active, but in Solanke, Tottenham have a most industrious and energetic option.

Simply, £54m would be too heavy a price for a player whose 33rd year would be encroaching. Tottenham have endured plenty of misery in the transfer market over the past few years, but in Solanke, they have a striker capable of offering a multi-faceted approach over the coming years.

Re-signing Kane for such a sum would set Levy back, and the fact that Solanke will soon be worth more than his predecessor bears testament to his importance in Ange’s side

Crystal Palace now want to sign £100k-p/w Chelsea "artist" after Chalobah

Crystal Palace now want to beat a European giant to sign another Chelsea youngster for Oliver Glasner this month, according to a fresh report.

Crystal Palace want new signings

Oliver Glasner has already revealed that he expects his side to be busy this January as he looks to continue their upward Premier League trajectory in the second half of the season. Currently 15th, the Eagles have pulled well clear of the drop zone thanks to a strong run of results, and are now eyeing up the sides above them, with just three points separating them and 12th placed Tottenham Hotspur.

They face two relegation candidates and three of the four sides directly above them in their next five Premier League outings, which could see them end that run of games in a much better spot, or sucked back into a relegation battle.

But they are working behind the scenes to land new faces, having already had an offer to sign Liverpool youngster Ben Doak rejected this window.

Crystal Palace fast-tracking deal for "talented" ace; same agent as Guehi

The Eagles are eyeing a swift move…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 9, 2025

“We are working on two transfers, I don’t know how quick we will get them done. It looks okay and then I will talk about the names”, Glasner explained before his side’s FA Cup third round win over Stockport County when quizzed on potential transfers.

“If we can keep the squad together, we’re really pleased with how the players have developed over the last months and also how we created a team spirit again after not an easy start. No one told me he wants to leave. The players want to stay here.”

Now, they have been credited with an interest in another Chelsea player following the success of Trevoh Chalobah’s loan.

Crystal Palace take on Borussia Dortmund for Chelsea midfielder

That comes as a report in Spain [via Sport Witness] claims that Crystal Palace are one of the sides in the running to sign Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka this month.

The Blues midfielder is expected to leave Chelsea before the window shuts, having seen his opportunities this season severely limited. And Borussia Dortmund are one of the sides credited with a strong interest in the England U21 international.

Now, the Eagles are also reportedly keen to sign the out-of-favour midfielder, who was hailed as an “artist” by Chelsea icon Marcel Desailly.

Chelsea's Carney Chukwuemeka in action

“I like Carney Chukwuemeka because he is like an artist who comes onto the stage. He has got the ball. Now is my moment. Shine. You see the dribbling. He is sure about what he is going to do and he is clinical,” he explained.

Of course, Crystal Palace face a problem over any potential move in that it would have to be a permanent signing as things stand. The Premier League rules state that no club can have two loan players from the same side, while the Eagles have already taken Chalobah on loan.

Chelsea are demanding Chukwuemeka’s £40m release clause for him to leave on a permanent basis, which may prove a major obstacle to his arrival in south London, while his £100,000 a week wages are also likely to be a concern given that club captain Marc Guehi currently takes home just half of that.

That could change if Chelsea were to recall the English defender, a prospect which is yet to be ruled out and led to Chalobah being left out of the win over Stockport due to “contractual issues”, leaving him not cup-tied should the Blues opt to trigger his return. Should that happen, a loan move for Chukwuemeka could be feasible, but would leave a gaping hole in the Palace backline.
