Ponting's time is running out as his team slips away

Ricky Ponting is losing control of everything he desires in cricket. His influence on the side is disappearing and his power over the selectors has waned.

Peter English at the WACA16-Dec-2010Ricky Ponting is losing control of everything he desires in cricket. His influence on the side is disappearing and his power over the selectors has waned. His batting is an imitation of the man who once swung at the same level as Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara. Ponting is physically at his fittest and looks in fabulous shape, but his mind, 36 years old on Sunday, is winding down. His team is in even greater decline. Valued players let him down often and the new faces are not yet helping. Ponting is in charge during Australia’s most damaging crisis since the mid-1980s and the situation becomes worse by the day. Everything is going wrong: the wrong XI chosen, the wrong attitude employed and the wrong shots displayed after the coin fell England’s way.Australia did recover from a horror first session to post 268, but it will take something extremely special over the next four days to stop England from taking the 2-0 lead that would ensure they retain the urn. Ponting is already facing the prospect of becoming only the second Australian to lose three Ashes series. If that happens his hold on the captaincy will be weak and he is not a man who will play without the leadership. In this form, with 80 runs in five bats in the series, Australia wouldn’t want him to.The time has come to speak in the past tense of Ponting as a great batsman. Sparks may remain but the periods of sustained excellence have gone. Ponting walks to the wicket on reputation and has been leaving without regular results. He has played 24 Tests since the start of last year and averaged 39.87, including series against West Indies and New Zealand, and two against Pakistan. A No.3 who previously created fear has become a shadow.Ponting is meant to be the one Australian batsman who can change the game or wrestle back the series. Picking four specialist fast bowlers, omitting the spinner Michael Beer and then losing the toss made his task even harder. He was called to the middle after two overs following Phillip Hughes’ early legside wobble, and was lucky to last more than three balls. If England had four slips instead of three, Ponting probably wouldn’t have scored. Briefly, his fortune had changed.Boundaries from a pull and a flick to midwicket raced him to 12 off nine deliveries. He was aggressive and seemed in, but he could not tone down the high-energy tempo, a trait his batting partners also struggled to conquer. Four wickets fell in an opening session that required graft not glamour.Ponting used to love the bounce of Perth, a ground which hasn’t always treated him well. He was lbw, hit high on the thigh, when 96 on debut back when he was already destined for greatness. Last year he was struck on the left elbow by Kemar Roach here, forcing him to retire hurt after a painful, jumpy display. There were more jerky movements today as he attempted to get on top of the ball but couldn’t.To his tenth delivery he leaned on his back foot to James Anderson and pushed unconvincingly at the ball, which found his edge and shot towards Paul Collingwood at third slip. Collingwood launched himself to his right and the ball buried in his outstretched hand. It was a catch Ponting would have claimed a couple of years ago, but one that would surely escape his reach now.Ponting’s lips pursed as he watched the brilliant interception and he then turned his head in anger, disbelief and resignation. He left slowly, watching the replay on the way back, and seeing the score. Yes, he was really out, the victim again. The team was 2 for 17 and heading to an even worse start than the destruction of Adelaide. It would soon be 4 for 36 and 5 for 69 before the rally from Michael Hussey, Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson.Michael Clarke, the leader in waiting, went with a tame waft outside off and Shane Watson was beaten by a searing yorker from Steven Finn. Smith, a batsman Ponting didn’t think was good enough for the top six five months ago, tried hard but went tamely after lunch. Haddin is too low at No.7.In the second session Ponting sat next to his mate Justin Langer, who doubles as the side’s batting coach. They have a lot to fix but no guaranteed way of achieving answers.Usually when Ponting talks publicly he is so reassuring about his team, remaining convincing even during extended losing streaks. On the eve of the match he made a rare slip. When asked if his captaincy could survive another Ashes loss he said the choice was out of his hands. “The powers that be will make those decisions I guess at the end of the series, or after this Test match,” he said.Ponting was the one who brought forward his potential judgment day. He doesn’t want to leave the scene, as he showed with his funereal shuffle off the ground after his dismissal, but he knows the price of continual individual and team failure.

One hundred and counting for Kumble

When Anil Kumble takes the field for the final Test at Ahmedabad, he will become the second spinner to have played 100 Tests

When Anil Kumble takes the field for the final Test against Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad, he will become the second spinner, after Shane Warne, to have played 100 Tests. Kumble is the second longest serving member of this Indian side after Sachin Tendulkar, and his contribution to Indian cricket has been simply immense. It takes a remarkable standard of fitness and resolve for a bowler to earn 100 caps and just six others, before Kumble, have passed this landmark. Only a handful of current bowlers have played more than 90 Tests and, with the exception of Shaun Pollock, all their stats in the last 25 matches are better than their overall career figures. Muttiah Muralitharan has a staggering 141 wickets from his last 20 games and Kumble is only four behind Warne’s tally of 118 scalps.

Kumble’s strike rate, at 53.69, in his most recent games, is far better than his career equivalent of 65.1. His average is also a couple of notches lower at 26.53 and with eight five-wicket hauls in the last 19 matches, Kumble is enjoying one of the most productive phases of his career.

In games that India have won, Kumble takes wickets at a mere 18.47 apiece. On the other hand, Kumble has taken only four of his 30 five-wicket hauls in matches that India have lost and his average skyrockets to 42.34 in these games.

After the tour of West Indies in 2001-02, Kumble had 109 overseas wickets from 34 games at an average of 40.40 and a strike rate of a wicket every 16 overs. But since then, he has improved significantly. In 13 Tests, beginning with the England tour in 2002, Kumble has taken 67 wickets at a respectable strike rate of 55.85.

A spinner should, in theory at least, have better figures as the match progresses and Kumble most certainly confirms to it. In the second innings, he averages 24.85 compared to 30.56 in the first. And if he’s bowling in the last innings of a match, that figure drops to 20.32.

Ben Stokes: Headingley win is 'just the start' for England

Captain hails performance of his England side in “another down-to-the-wire” Ashes Test in Leeds

Matt Roller09-Jul-2023Ben Stokes hailed the performance of his England side in “another down-to-the-wire” Ashes Test at Headingley, but insisted that their dramatic three-wicket victory is “just the start” of their bid to come back from two-nil down and win the series.Unlike four years ago, Stokes was not the protagonist of an England run chase at Headingley, scoring only 13 before being strangled down the leg side by Mitchell Starc. But contributions from Harry Brook – who top-scored with 75 – as well as Zak Crawley, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood were enough for them to hunt down a target of 254 inside 50 overs.”It’s obviously really big in the context of the series,” Stokes said. “We knew we needed to win this one to keep alive our hopes of winning the Ashes, so it’s a good win. If you look at the first two games in terms of how tight they were, getting over the line in another tight game can mentally help, knowing that it’s another close game but we’ve got over the line in this one.”The first two didn’t go our way. If you sort of flip it round and we didn’t win this one and it’s tight again, you would think, ‘It’s just not meant to be’. We’re obviously over the moon that we won this one but it’s just the start of what we know we need to do.”Related

England made three changes to their side ahead of the Headingley Test, in part due to Stokes’ own fitness issues. All three of the men who came into the side – Woakes, Wood and Moeen Ali – played important roles, taking 15 wickets between them and producing cameos with the bat.”Woakesy, being out of the team for such a long period of time, and to come back in and perform the way that he did both with ball and with bat… seeing Woody running in like he does, big smile on his face and enjoying every moment out there was great,” Stokes said.”[And] I said before the series started that we decided to go with Mo back into the squad because of the impact he can have on games. I’ve played a lot of games with him and I know the impact he can have on his best days.”You look at that little spell yesterday with 15 minutes when he took the wickets of Marnus [Labuschagne] and Steve [Smith] and that was a huge point in the game. That’s Mo as a cricketer. You bring him into the team and you want him to be impactful with the ball and the bat and he certainly was with the ball this game.”Pat Cummins and Ben Stokes at the presentation ceremony•Getty Images

Stokes also praised Brook’s innings on the final day. “The way Brooky controlled the game from ball one with the bat was amazing,” he said. “He went out there and put the pressure straight back on to them.”The way he played with Woakesy in that partnership was high-class; for such a young lad in a high-pressure situation in the Ashes, it was incredible. We’ve all seen what he can do with the bat. He’s an incredibly gifted player, and I think he’s only going to get better and better, the more pressure situations he’s put in.”Stokes was pleased with England’s approach across the four days at Headingley, but insisted: “I still think we can be better.” He added: “The thing about cricket is no-one has the perfect answer to everything. Everything will be assessed on the outcome. That will always be the case. No-one ever has the perfect answer for how it should be played.”We can be better in certain areas, and that’s all we can do, keep trying to be better and better and as clear as we possibly can as a team. People always seem to have an answer after the fact. I don’t think anyone will ever crack it; that’s why it’s such a great game.”There is a nine-day break in the series, which resumes at Old Trafford on July 19 – one which Stokes said “will do quite a few bodies the world of good” after three exhilarating, exhausting Tests to start the series. It remains to be seen whether Ollie Robinson, who suffered a back spasm on the first day, will be fit to play in Manchester.”We’ve kept the series alive and we just have to park everything from this week, but continue the way we play,” Stokes added. “I said last week we find ourselves in the perfect position with the way we play cricket.”It doesn’t change. After the Lord’s game and before this game, before the game in Manchester, we just have to do exactly the same thing: play cricket that gets a result, our way.”

Abhishek Sharma can be 'a real asset' for India, says Tom Moody

The SRH allrounder said he didn’t know whether his bowling would be needed against RR but he was prepared just in case

ESPNcricinfo staff24-May-2024Abhishek Sharma said he “didn’t know” whether he would have to bowl for Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals in Chennai but was ready in case the call came. And despite bowling just three overs previously in IPL 2024, Abhishek sent down a match-winning spell of 2 for 24 to put SRH in the IPL final.”To be honest, I didn’t know I will bowl this match but I was very much ready with my bowling because I’ve been working really hard on my bowling,” Abhishek said after the game. “The last two years it’s been really good with my batting so I wanted to work on my bowling with my dad. So special mention to my dad.”Abhishek’s had a blockbuster season with the bat, scoring 482 runs at a strike rate of 207.75 in 15 innings. His 42 sixes are the most this season, and the most for an Indian batter in any IPL season. On Friday night, however, it was his left-arm spin that came to the fore against RR’s middle order. He had Sanju Samson caught at wide long-on with his third ball and bowled Shimron Hetmyer with a carrom ball in his third over to leave RR six down. Abhishek did not concede a boundary in his first three overs. He was the sixth bowler used by SRH in their defence of 175 as the Chennai pitch began to offer lots of turn in the absence of dew. Though he hadn’t bowled much for SRH this season, Abhishek had bowled 20 overs in Punjab’s successful campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last season.Related

Shahbaz and Abhishek spin Sunrisers Hyderabad into IPL final

“When I saw the starting XI, I knew he’s [Abhishek] going to bowl today,” Varun Aaron said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “He’s a really good bowler. I’ve seen a lot of him in domestic cricket. He’s one of those bowlers who tosses it up a little bit, more than the others. He bowls that carrom ball which comes out from the front of the hand, that was a really good ball. That shows he has a lot of tricks up his sleeve and he’s a full-time bowler for Punjab. He’s one of those who likes to bowl and tells the captain, ‘I want to bowl in domestic games, it helps me be in the game more.’ He’s one of those allrounders who look forward to bowling. The other thing is he would have been wanting this chance to bowl for the longest time and he lapped it up really well.”Though he hasn’t bowled much this IPL season, Abhishek is one of only a few Indian batters who can bowl as well in limited-overs cricket, along with the likes of Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag and Nitish Kumar Reddy. That skill-set has been missing in the Indian team for a while – none of the specialist batters in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup can bowl.”He backs himself 100%,” Tom Moody said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “Yes, he doesn’t bowl as much as he needs to bowl in domestic cricket for whatever reasons but for the future of Indian cricket he needs to be bowling because he is a serious package to be reckoned with. [Bats] at the top of the order, someone who can bowl left-arm spin whatever the format, he’s going to be a real asset going forward.”The reason that makes him unique as a spinner is he tosses it up and what he tries to do is get overspin on the ball, so the ball comes down like that (with seam upright and facing the batter, not sideways), Nathan Lyon style, it dips. So he doesn’t bowl side spin, he bowls overspin and he’s got that clever carrom ball he’s been working on which is the one Hetmyer got and was an absolute peach.”

Chris Cooke century allows Glamorgan to pull in front in tight tussle with Derbyshire

Visitors face stiff final day of batting after being set a target in excess of 400

ECB Reporters Network14-Apr-2024Glamorgan pulled in front on day three of their Vitality County Championship match against Derbyshire after they posted 361 for seven declared to set a target of 401 for the visitors. The mainstay for Glamorgan was Chris Cooke who finished on 126 not out, by far the highest score of this match so far. He was well supported by 61 not out from James Harris and a well made 32 from Dan Douthwaite. In the 12 overs that were bowled before the close Derbyshire reached 40 for one with David Lloyd and Luis Reece undefeated. With Derbyshire still 361 runs away from their victory target a Glamorgan victory is the most likely outcome as the match heads into a final day with a mixed weather forecast.Mason Crane had come into bat as a nightwatchman late on day two and he did a good job of supporting Colin Ingram in a 45-run stand for the fifth wicket. Crane was trapped lbw by Thomson for 19 to bring the experienced pair of Ingram and Cooke together. For the first time in this match, batting started looking straightforward.Ingram was batting with great rhythm as he passed fifty from 76 balls. Shortly after reaching the milestone, he called Cooke through for a single and was sent back too late and was run out by a throw from Sam Conners. In the first two innings of the match, it was at this point that wickets had come in a hurry. Here Cooke and Douthwaite put together a partnership worth 109, the highest of the match up to that point. Cooke missed out on a chance to bat during the record-breaking efforts at Lord’s last week and he made the most of his chance in the middle in this game as he made the 13th hundred of his first-class career. After seeing the ball spin appreciably throughout the first two days, it was a lot easier going on day three, but Thomson continued to be a threat. He bowled the first 33 overs of the Glamorgan innings from the River Taff end and sent down 44 overs in total as he finished with career-best match figures of 12 for 201.Cooke was joined by Harris after Douthwaite was dismissed by Thomson to complete his second five-wicket haul of the match and Glamorgan continued to turn the screw with a second hundred-run stand in succession, eclipsing the stand by Cooke and Douthwaite as they made 116 undefeated for the eighth wicket. When the declaration came it set Derbyshire a target of 401.Harris was the man to make the one breakthrough on the third evening when he had Harry Came trapped lbw for three. As the clouds came over Sophia Gardens in the early evening it became too dark for play to continue and the players left the field with three overs unbowled. With the ball still turning on this pitch much will depend on how well Crane bowls on the final day with Glamorgan still needing nine wickets for victory.

Alec Stewart: England-Ireland ODI schedule was 'disrespectful' to county game

Situation in 2024 set to be even more problematic due to T20 World Cup at height of summer

Vithushan Ehantharajah28-Sep-2023Alec Stewart has accused the ECB of disrespecting the County Championship on the day Surrey secured the 2023 title.Stewart, who has been Surrey’s director of cricket since 2014, criticised the decision to schedule a one-day international series against Ireland that affected availability for the final two rounds of the Championship. He also complained about the mooted 2024 schedule, which will further marginalise the first-class game, urging the governing body to better support the counties. With England resting their World Cup squad for the Ireland series, Surrey were without Gus Atkinson and Sam Curran for the run-in, and then had to do without Will Jacks and Jamie Smith as both were included in a second-string squad for those matches. Jacks and Smith missed the penultimate fixture against Northamptonshire, with Surrey struggling in their absence, before joining the final match against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl on day two (Wednesday) after Ireland series ended in Bristol on Tuesday.”I have a bit of a moan here at the ECB,” Stewart said after Surrey had been confirmed as champions for the 21st time in their history. “They still need to respect the County Championship. We all like the Championship, have played in it, worked with it.”Take these Ireland games – England didn’t pick their first team, which was understandable because of the World Cup. But also to say that there was one game during round 13, then a game in between and then one game on the first day of this game. That to me is disrespectful to the county game.Related

“Could they have staged it better so that you only missed one game and had all three games during that penultimate game and perhaps on that first rest day so that everyone is then available?”With the 2024 T20 World Cup in June and July, domestic competitions will be squeezed further to the periphery next summer. The ECB has discussed billing the season’s climax as “Super September”, with the latter stages of the T20 Blast, finals of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup and Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy, along with the climax of the County Championship season. The men’s competitions will be shorn of personnel given the international fixtures running concurrently, with the third Test against Sri Lanka, and three T20Is and five ODIs against Australia crammed into 18 days from September 11. Stewart, who has seen the early plans, regards the situation as unworkable.”Even next year, what the probable schedule looks like next year, the ECB are going to try and call it Super September. It’s anything but. When the quarter-final of the T20 is on, there’s a Test match. When the finals of the T20 is on, England are playing Australia in T20s on the Friday and the Sunday. When the 50-over final is on, England are playing Australia.”You have to work with the national team, and I always want England to be the best. But also trying to find a way of being more respectful to the county game because that is where your players are made to go on to England. That’s what we’re up against.”Stewart also called for a return to an eight-team top division to ensure greater integrity in the competition. The ECB shifted to a 10-team Division One in 2021, along with a leaner fixture list with each team playing 14 matches. It meant not everyone in the top-flight plays each other twice, leading to Surrey facing second-place Essex just once this season, after only playing closest challengers Hampshire at the Kia Oval in their successful 2022 campaign.Stewart also regarded the experimental use of the Kookaburra ball for two rounds in June and July as another impediment to a balanced league structure.”If there is symmetry to it, it is so much better. We only played Essex once this year, and the fact that we brought the Kookaburra in for two games – why? We had two home games, others had two away games, others had one at home and one away. So, the integrity of the tournament, you still want to try and keep. We don’t want to be talking about [whether] it is right or fair that we’ve only played Essex once.”It is not easy – I do have sympathy with the people who have to put the schedule together – but my role is director of cricket at Surrey so I care about county cricket a lot. I just want to see that it’s not diluted or put on the backburner and everything is just looked at, internationally or franchise.”
