The former England internationals spend plenty of time together, as they keep audiences entertained with their Rest Is Football podcast. They are also regulars on the Premier League highlights show that is hosted by ex-Three Lions striker Lineker.

He was in the chair again for the first round of fixtures in 2024-25, with Shearer by his side, but there was no sign of Richards, with another former Manchester City star, Joe Hart, filling in. Richards, who is also a pundit for Sky Sports, has claimed that he cannot work two days in a row – but he was spotted filming a penalty shootout for ‘A League of Their Own’ during Everton’s clash with Brighton.

WHAT LINEKER SAID

That led Lineker to say on : “Alan, we were together all day yesterday (Saturday). Hang on a minute though Micah, you were telling us you can't work two days running…" Shearer interjected by saying: "Yeah what about that sh*t?! We saw you working!”

Richards defended himself when saying: “No, no, no. For those of you that don't know, Match of the Day runs from 12.30 noon to 12 at night, I can't do a Match of the Day and do Super Sunday for another eight hours the next day. It's one week BBC and one week Sky.”

Lineker jokingly quipped back with: “It's not going down a mine though is it?," before Shearer added: “You just took the words out of my mouth. F*cking hell. Honestly, the working man will be looking at you in disgust at your attitude.”

Lineker and Shearer continued to poke fun at Richards when claiming that one-time England international goalkeeper Hart offers greater insight to Match of the Day viewers, with Shearer saying: “Gaz, how good was it to have someone on the Match of the Day set who was good at their analysis? Joe Hart was very good wasn't he?” Lineker replied with: “Having watched your goalkeeping performance at half-time, Joe Hart probably edges it there as well!”

Sky Sports: European giant eyeing “key” £5,000-a-week Leeds United player

Leeds United are braced for interest in one of their stars this summer after it emerged that one European giant is keeping a close eye on his performances in the Championship.

Leeds stuttering in Championship race

Recent results have seen Daniel Farke's side chances of promotion to the Premier League this season take a massive hit.

Leeds have managed just one win in their last five outings, having previously been unbeaten in 2024. It means that with just three games left of the season, they sit third in England's second tier, two points behind league leaders Ipswich Town and a point behind Leicester City, though the Foxes have a game in hand on both of their rivals.

The Whites are planning for a future without the player.

ByDan Emery Apr 17, 2024

Perhaps more concerning for the three league leaders is the form of Southampton, who now sit just three points behind Leeds with a game in hand, albeit with a worse goal difference.

Despite the dip in form, it is still likely to be a record-breaking season for one team, but possibly for all the wrong reasons. This comes in the form of the current record for most points failing to secure automatic promotion, which currently stands at 90 (Sunderland, 1998). With the fourth-placed side in the Championship just six points off that tally with four games left to play, it could be broken this campaign despite recent wobbles at the top.

Should Leeds be the team that misses out, there could be some squad changes come the summer.

Archie Gray in Bayern's sights

Now, it has emerged that German giants Bayern Munich are one of the sides tracking young sensation Archie Gray. The teenager has been a key part of Leeds' side this season, racking up 41 Championship appearances, and has drawn admiring glances from Premier League sides.

Farke has also made no secret of his love for the midfielder this season. Back in October, he was quizzed about the teenage talent and was quick to endorse his ability.

"First of all, we are not here just to make sure we develop Archie in a perfect position. Although we love Archie and want to develop him and I have a reputation perhaps to bring some young players through and bring them on to another level, our main target is that we as Leeds United want to be successful."

The midfielder could soon receive another new contract at Elland Road, one that will likely see a significant hike on his £5,000 per week wages.

Archie Gray

But that could change, with Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg revealing that Bayern are 'monitoring' Gray, a 'ky player' for the Whites, ahead of a possible move and know 'about his quality'. However, it is added that at present it is 'not a hot topic' and that there is 'no contact between Bayern and the player's management', news which will be a relief to the Leeds faithful at this moment in time.

Despite this good news, that could all change in the months to come should Leeds not secure promotion, and bigger fish begin to circle.

Lungi Ngidi injury a blow to South Africa ahead of Tests against England

South Africa have suffered a blow ahead of their Test series against England with fast bowler Lungi Ngidi not expected to play the opening match starting on Boxing Day because of a hamstring injury that has also ruled him out of the Mzansi Super League final.Ngidi is in doubt for the four-Test series against England after he suffered a “significant Grade 1 hamstring muscle tear” while warming up for Tshwane Spartans before the MSL play-off against Nelson Mandela Bay Giants in Port Elizabeth on Friday, in which Spartans won a place in Monday’s decider against Paarl Rocks.Set to name their squad for the first two Tests on Monday, South Africa now face the prospect of being a bowler short when the series gets underway at Centurion on December 26, with Cricket South Africa chief medical officer Shuaib Manjra saying Ngidi’s rehabilitation program would be geared towards a return to action in January.”Lungi Ngidi sustained an acute hamstring muscle injury during the warm-up prior to the MSL T20 play-off on Friday,” Dr Manjra said. “Scans done on Saturday showed a significant Grade 1 tear of his hamstring muscle and therefore he has been ruled out of the MSL T20 final.”He will commence his rehab and return-to-play program with the aim of getting him fit to play for the Momentum Multiply Titans in January 2020 and based on his progress, a decision will be made regarding his availability for selection for the Proteas team.”Ngidi had begun the MSL season with the aim of remaining fit throughout his home summer after a run of injuries over the past two years. He suffered a hamstring strain during South Africa’s defeat to Bangladesh at the World Cup and missed the next three games, although he recovered in time to play two more matches at the tournament. Ngidi’s most recent Test appearance was during South Africa’s tour of India in October, where he played only the last of the three matches. The Spartans are surprise MSL finalists after half of their pool matches were washed out. They edged into the final three and then denied the favourites, the Giants, the chance to challenge for the trophy with a 22-run victory in the play-off. Initially, Ngidi missing last Friday’s match was seen as a precautionary measure ahead of a busy international summer before scans revealed the extent of the damage.

£15m Spurs hero would be worth more than Maddison if he was sold in 2024

Are Tottenham Hotspur where Ange Postecoglou wants them to be? Perhaps, actually. The Australian was appointed last summer to rebuild an outfit in ruin, and the framework placed in the months since looks steady and ready for further improvements.

Tottenham are fifth in the Premier League heading into the final stretch of the season but sit just three points behind Aston Villa – who have played an extra fixture – in the top four.

All associated with the London club will hope that silverware, last added to the Tottenham trophy cabinet in 2008, will be clinched under the 58-year-old's rule, but Ange just wants to see progress and development as a unit, even remarking recently that he wouldn't be dismayed if his outfit failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Still, it would be nice to return to Europe's elite club competition, making the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – it really needs a proper name, doesn't it – a more attractive destination and convincing the top dogs within the squad more likely to stay for the long run.

James Maddison is one such player, having proved himself a bona fide success after completing a £40m transfer from Leicester City last summer and being described as a "nightmare for defenders" by The Times' Henry Winter.

James Maddison's season in numbers

Maddison has been a prominent presence in the English top-flight for many campaigns now, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield with Leicester, but it feels like he's taken his game to the next level in the capital, thriving as the creative fulcrum on Postecoglou's system.

James Maddison for Tottenham.

As per Sofascore, the England international has scored four goals and supplied seven assists across 18 Premier League appearances this season, averaging 2.5 key passes, 1.3 tackles and 1.3 dribbles per game, completing 87% of his passes and winning 57% of his ground duels.

He brings a skill set unseen down N17 since the days of Christian Eriksen at his peak; ranking among the top 7% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 1% for shot-creating actions, the top 10% for passes attempted and the top 2% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, he's clearly one of Europe's elite No. 10s.

The 27-year-old's importance to the newly-formed Tottenham system was evidenced when the blitzing start to the season was sent into a spin against Chelsea in November, with an undefeated start ended after a spate of red cards and injuries to Maddison and fellow summer signing Micky van de Ven created a maelstrom of troubles that ended the constancy in results.

That erstwhile consistency is still being fought for now, with the 4-0 thrashing over Aston Villa over a week ago followed by a dismal 3-0 loss at Craven Cottage against Fulham last time out.

And while Maddison flattered to deceive in that one, hooked after 66 minutes, he's undoubtedly one of the Premier League's finest midfielders.

James Maddison warming up for Tottenham.

Maddison might be Spurs' joint-most valuable centre-midfielder at the present day (£43m), sharing that honour with exciting rising talent Pape Matar Sarr, according to CIES Football Observatory's valuation model, there's a former Lilywhite gem still plying his trade who would eclipse that value.

Indeed, for all of Maddison's ability, he offers but a fraction of the machine-like style of Luka Modric, who would be worth a pretty penny at Spurs, were his transfer to Real Madrid engineered in contemporary times.

What peak Luka Modric would be worth in 2024

Without a doubt, Modric is one of the finest players of his generation and he didn't need a Ballon d'Or accolade to rubber-stamp his lasting legacy (although sure, it's a nice bit of kit to adorn the walls).

Tottenham Luka Modric

A legend at Real Madrid, the Croatian player has completed 521 appearances for the La Liga side and won a horde of major trophies such as five Champions League trophies and three league titles – the latter soon to become four and the continental competition very much attainable for Carlo Ancelotti's outfit this season.

But after leaving his homeland club Dinamo Zagreb, he cut his teeth in the Premier League with Tottenham, transferring for £15m back in 2008 as a 22-year-old and playing 160 matches before crossing the channel to Spanish shores in a £30m package. Fine business from a Spurs perspective indeed.

This was a relatively sizeable sum back in the day but what if, theoretically, these past movements occurred at the present – is it safe to assume that the Croatia international would eclipse the value of any current Tottenham star?

Thankfully, Totally Money has got it all covered, concluding within its algorithm that Modric would have cost Real a whopping £84m if the transfer happened under Postecoglou's watch in 2024.

Were Modric some 16 years younger, he might not have left Tottenham for a figure eclipsing the £85m Los Blancos paid for Gareth Bale back in 2013 – a world record at the time – but he would have come pretty close.

The transfer market has bloated considerably over the past few decades and it's no wonder that teams are starting to get caught up with financial fair play regulations – it's like a washing machine of obstacles and stipulations that ostensibly favour certain clubs over others.

Still, back to the point. There's no doubt that the 5 foot 8 Modric would be one of the most expensive central midfielders in the world if the events of way back when played out today.

Raphinha on the move? The transfer fee that would convince Barcelona to sell Brazilian winger revealed

Barcelona are reportedly considering selling winger Raphinha – but prospetive suitors will have to pay a huge fee to secure his services.

Raphinha repeatedly linked with Barca exitPreviously rejected large bid for wingerBrazilian's minimum price tag revealedWHAT HAPPENED?

According to , Barcelona and new boss Hansi Flick rate the 27-year-old very highly but due to the club's financial issues, they may consider selling him. The report adds he won't be sold for anything less than €90 million (£76m/$98m), with the Catalan outfit previously rejecting an offer worth €80m.

Ever since Raphinha joined Barcelona from Leeds in 2022, it seems the winger has been linked with a transfer exit in virtually every transfer window since then. Perhaps, the Brazilian international is somewhat under-rated at the La Liga team.

DID YOU KNOW?

Raphinha, whose contract at Barca runs until the summer of 2027, has scored 20 goals and bagged 25 assists in 87 games for the Spanish outfit so far. He joined from Leeds for £55m ($65m) just under two years ago.

This Spurs flop was worse than Hojbjerg & rinsed Levy for £48m

Tottenham Hotspur have improved since Ange Postecoglou's appointment last summer. However, there is still work to be done to bring the club to the desired standard, competing at the forefront against Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Moreover, last term's troubles severed hopes of playing in Europe this term, and club record scorer Harry Kane opted to leave the Premier League for Bayern Munich, illuminating the need for sweeping change.

Harry Kane for Tottenham.

While the season has been characterised by an ebb and flow in performance, Tottenham are building and have welcomed a score of fresh faces.

There is still flotsam to be shifted through, with centre-midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg the highest-profile squad member who could leave sooner rather than later.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's Spurs future

Hojbjerg arrived from Southampton and Tottenham knew they'd secured a bargain. Joining for just £15m after handing in a transfer request, the Dane's industriousness and command in the engine room was perfect for then-manager Jose Mourinho's ideology.

But the wind has changed down N17 and Spurs, led by enterprising Postecoglou, no longer hold Hojbjerg at the centre of their plans, the player having started just six Premier League matches this season, usually due to a lack of usual options.

He is certainly not a bad player, ranking among the top 20% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues and European competitions over the past year for pass completion and the top 11% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, but he is not mobile or creative enough in possession to suit the play Spurs now play.

Pierre Hojbjerg.

As such, rumours of his sale have been rife over the past eight months or so, with Manchester United curious last summer and, more recently, heavily linked with a move away in January, though no move materialised, with the 28-year-old actually rejecting concrete bids from Lyon.

Combative and composed, Hojbjerg appears destined for departure but he's certainly not the worst midfielder in Tottenham's recent history to have played for a number of years, with Moussa Sissoko not likely to be remembered all that fondly despite making 202 appearances for the Lilywhites.

Spurs' signing of Moussa Sissoko

Tottenham signed the 6 foot 1 Sissoko from Newcastle United on a five-year deal for £30m back in 2016, with the versatile Frenchman having impressed at St. James' Park despite the club's relegation, prompting him to push for a transfer.

The player admitted that his first year at Spurs was "the worst season of my career" and he managed just eight starts in the Premier League, failing to score and supplying just three assists.

Pundit Chris Sutton even slammed Sissoko for being a "bad buy" sooner after his acquisition, lamenting the "disappointment" and questioning whether funding could have been better placed towards a different profile of player.

His strength and athleticism were always a staple of his performance, however, and he did manage to rectify his time at the club and become an important player under Mauricio Pochettino and then Mourinho.

While he did not suffer the unrelenting misery of, say, Tanguy Ndombele, he cost a pretty penny indeed and earned a healthy salary of £80k-per-week across his five campaigns in north London, meaning that he totalled an outlay of £50.8m including the initial transfer.

This hardly represented the best value for money as chairman Daniel Levy sought to cement Tottenham at the forefront of European football, as he never emerged as one of the better players in the Premier League in his position throughout his time at the club.

Given that he was sold to Watford for just £2.5m in 2021 – taking the money spent on him to £48.3m net – after falling out of favour under Nuno Espirito Santo, Spurs slumping to sixth and seventh across his final two years at the club, he can hardly go down as one of the finest purchases under Levy's command.

Hojbjerg, by comparison, has maintained a decent level of performance throughout, whereas Sissoko failed to hit an average over 1.0 across any defensive metric during his final season in Tottenham colours.

Moreover, he was ineffectual in attack, posting just three goals and two assists across his final two terms at the outfit.

Of course, Hojbjerg is not defined by his goals and assists and neither, really, is Sissoko, but Hojbjerg's nearing exit falls more down to the fact that he is unsuited to the system, whereas Sissoko was unable to string together any real consistency, falling by the wayside after building himself from that poor start to life in London.

The Denmark international has completed 89% of his passes in the Premier League this season while averaging 3.5 ball recoveries and 1.0 tackles per match, but a game average of 0.2 key passes really doesn't speak of energy and invention that Postecoglou would be endeared by.

Former Tottenham player Moussa Sissoko.

Perhaps this all falls into the same ballpark: neither player has managed to sustain stellar showings with the regularity needed to secure success at Tottenham.

Sissoko's work rate would have made him, at his peak, an attractive option for Postecoglou, but ultimately he was part of a disappointing decline after the halcyon days of Pochettino's reign, and supporters will now hope for a sustained change of track that could finally bring some silverware to a club desperate for such success.

Some might put forth the argument that he enjoyed some success at Tottenham, salvaging a prominent position after the early issues, but it's not enough to justify the big price tag and wages that drained the outfit.

Given that Chelsea signed N'Golo Kante for £32m and Liverpool purchased Sadio Mane for £36m that same window, it's fair to say that investment could have been placed elsewhere for far greater results.

Now, Tottenham will hope to have learned from their chequered past in the market, but only time will tell if Postecoglou's blossoming project will wither or finally achieve silver-laden results.

FIFA hit with legal action as players' union takes a stand to block revamped Club World Cup and take control of congested fixture schedule

FIFA has been sued by FIFPRO’S European member unions as they aim to block the revamped Club World Cup in 2025.

FIFA face legal actionFIFPRO's European unions take them to Brussels courtHit out against CWC 2025 and congested match calendarWHAT HAPPENED?

The expanded men’s Club World Cup, set to feature 32 teams, is at the centre of the controversy as players' unions challenge FIFA's crowning club tournament. FIFPRO, the International Federation of Professional Footballers, represents players worldwide and has long been an advocate for their rights. The union’s European member branches, particularly the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) in England and the Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels (UNFP) in France, spearheaded the legal claim submitted to the Brussels Court of Commerce. The claim underscores the unions’ dissatisfaction with FIFA’s unilateral scheduling decisions, which they argue compromise players' rights and well-being.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The dispute stems from FIFA's decision to host the expanded Club World Cup in the United States from June 15 to July 13, 2025. This decision, announced in May, was met with an immediate backlash from both FIFPRO and the World Leagues Association (WLA), who threatened legal action if FIFA did not reconsider rescheduling the tournament. Despite these warnings, FIFA has remained firm on its stance which has forced the body to pursue legal action.

WHAT FIFPRO SAID

FIFPRO's central argument is that the new tournament schedule imposes excessive demands on players, leaving them with little to no rest between seasons. According to Maheta Molango, PFA's chief executive, “The fixture calendar is broken to the point that it has now become unworkable."

Whereas, David Terrier, President of FIFPRO Europe, said: "Since all attempts at dialogue have failed, it is now up to us to ensure that the fundamental rights of players are fully respected by taking the matter to the European courts and thus to the ECJ. It's not a question of stigmatising a particular competition, but of denouncing both the underlying problem and the straw that broke the camel's back."

DID YOU KNOW?

The 2024-25 season is expected to merge almost seamlessly into the 2025-26 season, exacerbating the situation. The Premier League is set to conclude on May 25, 2025, followed by the Champions League final on May 31. An international window is then slated for June 2-10, with the Club World Cup commencing just four days later, on June 14. This intense scheduling leaves players with minimal recovery time before the Premier League kicks off again in mid-August. Such a tight turnaround is not unprecedented; similar scheduling pressures were observed this summer – with Euro 2024, Copa America 2024, and the Olympics scheduled – illustrating the persistent problem.
