'People have opinions on me, and I understand why' – Ben Duckett

A year on from an infamous incident in a bar in Perth, Duckett’s recall for the Lions tour is a sign of his second coming

Matt Roller07-Jan-2019Winter can be a strange time for county cricketers. Once a period of rest or temporary work, the off-season has turned into a six-month bonanza of opportunity for many: T20 franchises are desperate to spot hidden gems outside of the international set-up, representative sides tour ever more frequently, and there are chances to learn or to make a point at every turn. But for Ben Duckett, last winter could hardly have been worse. It included a fine and a suspension after pouring a drink over James Anderson during England’s ignominious Ashes tour; omission from the Lions squad to tour the West Indies in the spring, and surgery on his left hand which ruled him out of the North v South series. It was, he reflects, “the lowest point of my career”.Fast forward a year, and there is a chance for redemption. Named in the Lions squad to tour India despite an underwhelming season which he describes as “my worst so far on the pitch”, Duckett has the opportunity to pile on the runs, and make the case that his unquestionable talent rather than his unruly reputation should be what makes him stand out from the crowd.”People have opinions on me,” he admits, “and I completely understand why they do. Getting the call-up when I’ve not necessarily done that well over the last 12 months shows there’s backing from the selectors and the coaches – they want me in there, which is such a positive for me.”I’ve made mistakes in my past and I’d be the first to admit that. Every time I have, I’ve been furious with myself. The management have backed me and shown faith in me. That tells me that the past is in the past, and I’m not going to think about it too much – it’s done now, and there’s nothing I can do about it. But thankfully, I’ve been given a great opportunity to represent the Lions again, so now it’s just down to me to go and perform.”Duckett is in the squad for the duration of the tour, meaning he will have five 50-over games and two unofficial Tests in which to impress. The trip marks Duckett’s first return to the subcontinent since England’s 2016-17 winter tours, during which he won his four Test caps. Despite a fluent fifty in defeat at Mirpur, his method against offspin came under scrutiny in India after R Ashwin dismissed him three times in as many innings, and he was dropped two games into the series. That is not to say that Duckett is overly concerned about the challenge that spinning conditions will present. “I’ve spoken to a few people about it,” he says, “but the offspinner who I was struggling against was probably the best one in the world. Ashwin’s not just an offspinner, either – he’s got all these variations, and a lot of left-handers have struggled against him. I’m trying not to think too much about it. I know now why I struggled when I last went to India, so at least that’s a head start for me going out there this time.”Despite his disappointment at a county season which brought only one hundred across formats, compared to three in 2017 and seven the year before that, Duckett impressed with a match-winning 75 on debut in the Mzansi Super League, and played for a youthful Hobart Hurricanes side in the Abu Dhabi T20 immediately after the season’s end.”Playing in different teams and different conditions is great,” he says. “If I do play at that step above again, and I go and play abroad, then I can now say that I’ve played there and I’ll know the conditions well. You play with different players, different coaches, and feed off them – it’s a great experience.”2018 also saw a move to Nottinghamshire for Duckett, after 12 years at Northamptonshire. There was no shortage of suitors as he approached the end of his contract at Wantage Road – Yorkshire was mooted as another possible destination – but the decision ended up being an easy one.”As soon as Peter Moores came and spoke to me, it was easy. After I chatted to him I said to my agent ‘just get it done, that’s the place I want to be’. I’ve played against Notts a number of times in the past few years, and I get on with a lot of the guys there. I loved my time at Northants, but as soon as I knew Notts were keen and spoke to them, I was dead set.”Alongside the signings of Ben Slater, Zak Chappell, and Joe Clarke, Duckett’s move to Trent Bridge was highlighted by some as evidence of wealthy counties poaching talent from smaller rivals. But from the players’ point of view, the moves are evidence of a long-term vision for the club.”I think it’s great what Notts are doing,” Duckett says. “They’re finding young, English players who can form the core of a side over the next few years; who can step up and be at Notts for the rest of their careers.”I completely understand people having opinions, but we’re just trying to get the most dangerous squad we possibly can. There’s a great balance between the experienced players and the younger guys, and looking forward, we should be contenders for every trophy this year.”For years Duckett has been mentioned as a future England star, although his professionalism has been called into question since he was a teenager. It is clear to him as much as anyone that reputations are hard to shed, and it would surely benefit all parties – Duckett, Notts, and England – if his batting was the only thing to make the headlines in 2019.Yet it is easily forgotten that Duckett is still only 24; easier still to forget that beneath the reputation lies a man with immense talent, who could well become an all-format regular at international level.Of course, Duckett knows that competition for England places is fierce, and has few illusions about the length and quality of the queues he is trying to reach the front of. “In all formats, it’s so tough to break into the set-up at the minute: I’m not going to put any pressure on myself, and I’m not the type of person who thinks too far ahead.”For this year, the main thing is playing for Notts, trying to win games and a couple of trophies. If one day I do get the recall then I’d be chuffed. Whatever the format, if I do play for England again, I’ll be over the moon.”

Man Utd news: "Magnificent" star has now suffered injury during int’l break

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag could be dealt a cruel blow on the injury front as one of his star players is now awaiting assessment for an injury picked up on international duty, according to reports.

Man Utd latest news: Sheikh Jassim withdraws, injury problems, Sancho exit

Recently, huge news has hit the headlines in regards to a Man Utd takeover after Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani withdrew from the bidding process to try and acquire 100% of the club. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is now close to agreeing a deal to buy 25% of the club, in an agreement that would still see the Glazer family hold a verticle of control at Old Trafford; however, the exact terms of any potential deal upon ratification are yet to be fully established.

In other news, The Athletic have recently reported that Man Utd's injury latest is being investigated as their list of absentees continues to mount over the course of the season. Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lisandro Martinez, Amad Diallo and Tyrell Malacia are all currently on the sidelines long-term due to various concerns; meanwhile, summer signing Mason Mount, Raphael Varane and Sergio Reguilon have missed chunks of action due to sustaining knocks. Director of Football John Murtough has shed some light on the next steps to try and combat the Premier League giants' injury crisis, stating:

"We’re also looking at why we’ve had so many injuries to see if there are any patterns to improve prevention in future. Some of them have been impact injuries, such as Kobbie’s and Amad’s, which are unpredictable. Others have been muscular and could reflect the sheer volume of games played over the past year, including last year’s World Cup."

Meanwhile, Barcelona are said to be keen on a cut-price move for Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho next summer; however, the England international would need to significantly lower his salary demands to push through any deal either on loan or permanently.

Man Utd injury update – Casemiro suffers concern on international duty

As per a fresh Man United injury update on Casemiro from the club, the midfielder suffered an ankle injury on international duty with Brazil against Venezuela and was substituted in the 79th minute after asking to be taken off.

Reports since have claimed he did not train on Saturday due to his ankle being 'badly swollen' and he will undergo further assessment to determine the severity of the injury, which could lead to a spell on the sidelines for the veteran midfielder, who has previously been hailed as "magnificent" by Ten Hag.

Casemiro has been a major contributor for United since completing his move from Real Madrid in 2022, registering 11 goals and seven assists in 62 appearances across all competitions (Casemiro statistics – Transfermarkt).

Nevertheless, it looks as if he could now be unavailable for some upcoming fixtures at Old Trafford, though United will need to wait and see on that front.

"Special" – Journalist says Spurs have made contact to sign a "superstar"

Tottenham Hotspur have approached one club over signing their "little superstar", and there is a real belief that he's a "special" player.

Spurs form under Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou's high-flying Lilywhites are taking everybody off guard with their sumptuous displays so far this season, and few could've envisaged their best start to a campaign since 1960/1961. Spurs are currently top of the Premier League pile after an unbeaten run of six wins from a possible eight, sealing all-important wins against the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in that time.

This has all been achieved without star striker and all-time top goalscorer Harry Kane, who departed Tottenham for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window. The England international's exit was seen as a potentially major blow to Spurs, but they've since thrived in his absence. Kane himself is overjoyed with the start Postecoglou has made in north London.

"I have made it clear my whole career I am a Tottenham fan and I would love to see Tottenham do well," Kane said at a press conference with England.

"It's great to see. I think I've said before, the manager is doing great for them with the way they're playing. The fans are right behind the team and it's definitely what they needed after the last few years. I'll always keep an eye on Spurs and the Premier League.

"There is no other team in the Premier League I would want to win than Tottenham. I have to be respectful to Bayern Munich and of course, the fans know I will always have a soft spot for Spurs – there is no question about that. Of course, I hope [Tottenham] do as well as possible but my main attention is where I am now and trying to perform for Bayern."

Will Tottenham sign anyone in January?

While their imperious form has been just that, there are still suggestions that Tottenham could make some signings in the January transfer window. The likes of Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba and Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly are reported targets to bolster Postecoglou's backline, while it is believed Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermereen is of interest as well.

Royal Antwerp midfielderArthur Vermeeren.

The 18-year-old, who has been likened to Barcelona legends Xavi and Andres Iniesta, has also been praised by former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

"Do I sometimes watch with my mouth open? Certainly," said Alderweireld.

"Everyone knows perfectly what to do when in possession of the ball and when losing the ball. Then the qualities of such a boy come to the fore. What he shows at his age is fantastic. I have rarely seen that."

Now, journalist Graeme Bailey has joined in on the praise, calling him a "little superstar" and "special" player as Spurs make contact for him. Speaking on the Talking Transfers podcast, sharing the latest Vermeeren transfer update, he said:

“This guy is special. Antwerp have a little superstar on their hands here in Arthur Vermeeren. He really is, from what I’m being told speaking to scouts, they think he’s special. Our understanding is that Man City, Arsenal and Tottenham have all enquired about him, so have Bayern Munich, Dortmund and Juventus, Barcelona as well who looked in the summer at him."

History bodes well for Surrey in title race after third innings victory

Jade Dernbach and Morne Morkel shared eight wickets as Somerset, who had followed on 279 runs behind, were bowled out for 210

ECB Reporters Network22-Jun-2018
ScorecardSurrey routed Somerset by an innings with more than four sessions to spare to replace them at the Specsavers County Championship table.Jade Dernbach and Morne Morkel shared eight wickets as Somerset, who had followed on 279 runs behind, were bowled out for 210 in 61.2 overs to hand Surrey victory by an innings and 68 runs.Only James Hildreth, who finished unbeaten on 89, offered prolonged resistance to a rampant Surrey seam attack. It is the first time since 1958 that Surrey have won three games in succession by an innings and they went on to win the Championship that season as well. The odds on a first title since 2002, which was when Surrey last won at Guildford, will have shortened after this impressive performance. They set victory by taking five wickets in the first hour as Somerset, who resumed on 18 for 0, lurched to 69 for 5.Morkel made the breakthrough with his first ball of the day, trapping Matt Renshaw lbw half forward for two. Dernbach then picked up the first of two wickets in his opening spell when George Bartlett drove loosely and was caught behind.Ed Byrom could only fend off the next delivery – a well-directed bouncer from Morkel – to short leg then Dernbach pinned Tom Abell deep in his crease.Rikki Clarke had Steve Davies held in the gully at which point Somerset had lost five wickets for 51 runs before Hildreth and Lewis Gregory dug in, either side of lunch. They added 62 runs to raise Somerset hopes of a fightback before another well-directed short ball from Morkel broke the stand as Gregory edged low to Clarke at slip.Dom Bess played down the wrong line and lost his off stump to Clarke but Josh Davey gave Hildreth good support in an eighth wicket stand of 62 although Davey rode his luck. Surrey were convinced he had been caught behind before he had got into single figures and he was dropped on 19 by Scott Borthwick at second slip.Hildreth pulled offspinner Amar Virdi, who was being watched by England’s chief selector Ed Smith, into the adjoining road for six and coped well with Morkel’s pace but he ran out of partners. Davey eventually gloved another good lifter, this time from Dernbach, to wicketkeeper Ollie Pope and Tim Groenewald played on for a second-ball duck.Morkel applied the final touch when Max Waller, batting as concussion replacement for Jack Leach, who had been struck on the helmet by the South African on the second day, edged another bumper to Pope.Hildreth hit 13 fours and faced 127 balls but lacked support against a Surrey side who look well equipped to end their long wait for the title on this evidence.

Southampton: Martin must brutally ditch dud who was worse than Armstrong

Southampton travel away from St. Mary's to face Middlesbrough this afternoon as they look to end a run of three straight defeats in the Championship.

Russell Martin's side have lost to Ipswich Town, Sunderland, and Leicester City in their last three league outings by an aggregate score of 10-1.

What's the latest Southampton team news?

The Saints head coach has confirmed that Flynn Downes is back fit and available for selection against Boro after he missed out on the most recent loss to Ipswich.

He has also revealed that central defender Jan Bednarek is in contention to feature after his return to training, whilst summer signing Ross Stewart is not expected to be back in action until after the international break.

With the return of Downes in mind, Martin must now ruthlessly ditch central midfielder Joe Aribo from the starting XI after his struggles against the Tractor Boys.

How well did Joe Aribo perform against Ipswich?

The Nigeria international recorded a dismal Sofascore rating of 6.1 for his performance against Kieran McKenna's side and was worse than Adam Armstrong in midfield.

Whilst the striker, who has been converted into a midfielder, struggled and lost five of his eight duels, Aribo stood out ahead of the English dynamo, for the wrong reasons.

The former Rangers star, whose style was once described as "languid" by former teammate Ezri Konsa, lost six of his seven ground duels and three of his four aerial battles throughout his 56 minutes on the pitch, which shows that he failed to deal with the opposition's physicality and was dominated by the other team.

Southampton midfielder Joe Aribo.

He also failed to deliver much quality in possession as the ex-Charlton man endured a 0% success rate across three dribble attempts, in comparison to Armstrong's 50% over two attempts, which suggests that the former Blackburn ace delivered a better performance in the middle of the park as he used the ball better and offered more physicality.

Aribo has averaged a poor Sofascore rating of 6.55 across six Championship appearances this season. He is yet to contribute with a goal or a 'big chance' created and has lost a staggering 72% of his duels, as per Sofascore.

Downes, on the other hand, has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.12 over three league outings for Southampton so far and has created one 'big chance' to go along with a duel success rate of 57% and 3.3 tackles and interceptions per game.

Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes.

The West Ham United loanee, who has completed an eye-catching 98% of his attempted passes, has offered a creative threat and produced impressive defensive displays with his ability to win the majority of his battles to regain possession for his side.

Therefore, Martin must ruthlessly ditch Aribo from the starting XI in order to bring Downes back into the team, and Armstrong should keep his place after offering more than the £60k-per-week flop against Ipswich.

The 27-year-old dud, who scored two goals in 21 Premier League games last season, is yet to make his mark in a Southampton shirt since his move from Ibrox last summer and his most recent display does not suggest that he is going to find his form on the south coast any time soon.

Webster and Doran keep New South Wales at bay

Getty Images

Persistent batting from the Tasmanian pair of Beau Webster and Jake Doran and persistent rain have combined to frustrate New South Wales at the SCG.After much of day two was lost to rain, further weather delays meant only 65.1 overs were bowled on day three. The Blues made an early breakthrough with Steve O’Keefe deceiving George Bailey seven balls into the start of play to leave Tasmania two down and trailing the home side’s first-innings total by 369. But that was the only joy for New South Wales as Webster and Doran put together an unbroken stand of 160 in 64 overs.Webster reached his fourth first-class hundred in the penultimate over of the day, having faced 253 balls to get there. Doran remained not out on 86 at close. The two sides will face a challenge on the final day trying to manufacture a result.
