Fulham need to land Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet to ensure safety

Fulham will play in the Premier League this season for the first time since 2014.

The Cottagers finally earned promotion back to England’s highest division by defeating Aston Villa in the play-off final back in May. Owner Shahid Khan has insisted the club will not be in the Premier League to make up the numbers, and is hoping for further success this term, having spent £30 million on Jean Michael Seri and Maxime le Marchand this summer.

Manager Slavisa Jokanovic may also have a new goalkeeper at the top of his summer shopping list with the window closing at an earlier date of August 9. Marcus Bettinelli remains the only senior stopper at the club after David Button was sold to Brighton.

Therefore, a new goalkeeper surely has to be signed, and the perfect addition could be out-of-favour Liverpool stopper Simon Mignolet.

Valued at £9 million by Transfermarkt, the Belgian’s time at Anfield looks almost certain to come to an end this summer.

Mignolet was dropped as Liverpool’s number one earlier in the season, but has been pushed even further down the pecking order following the arrival of Alisson from Roma for £66.9 million – he now looks set to follow Danny Ward through the exit door.

The 30-year-old might not be cut out for life at Liverpool, but he could still be an astute signing by the Cottagers, as Mignolet has plenty of experience in the Premier League which could prove vital in their bid for survival.

He remains a decent goalkeeper and could thrive in an environment with less pressure, as he did to great effect at Sunderland to then earn him a move to Anfield.

And if available at a great price, this move makes complete sense, and would go some way to helping Fulham avoid an immediate return to the Championship this season.

Fulham fans… what do you make of the news? Let us know!

Joe Gomez wants to fight for his place at Liverpool

As reported by The Liverpool Echo, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is desperate to stay and fight for his place in the team at Anfield rather than head out on loan over the coming season.

What’s the story?

Gomez has had a real struggle over the last two years to win his way into first team plans at the Reds after a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury sidelined him for over a year.

Over the last six months he’s tried to convince Jurgen Klopp he deserves more match time but has had to make do with cup appearances only.

According to The Liverpool Echo, that’s led to teams like English Premier League new boys Brighton & Hove Albion hoping to sign him on loan this summer.

However, that’s not what Gomez wants at all.

As quoted by the paper, the defender said:

My main aim is to play here for Liverpool and under this manager. My target is to get regular football and I want to play at the top level and that’s what I am focused on at the moment. I feel 100%. I know that this pre-season is a big opportunity for me to hit the ground running again. I feel like I just have to keep pushing and try to take every opportunity that I can to progress and keep learning.

It’ll be encouraging for Reds fans to hear the young defender has serious ambition to make it at the club although he will have to fight hard for places with Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and even the possibility of an incoming signing to contend with.

Hull boss confirms Snodgrass wants to leave, West Ham deal close

West Ham’s deal to sign Robert Snodgrass from Premier League rivals Hull City is edging closer, after the Tigers boss Marco Silva confirmed the player wants to leave.

What’s the word?

29-year-old Snodgrass is a player who has seen his name adorn the back pages throughout the transfer window and we’re now edging towards a breakthrough, with Hull City boss Marco Silva confirming the Scotland international wants to leave.

That sets things up for West Ham to complete a £10m deal in the coming days, but Burnley have also seen a bid accepted, whilst Middlesbrough are also reported to be interested. As it stands though, West Ham are the favourites.

With the impending exit of Dimitri Payet from the London Stadium, West Ham have a spot in their side for a creative outlet and Snodgrass appears to be that man.

What was said?

Speaking ahead of Hull’s FA Cup clash with Fulham tomorrow, ESPN quotes Hull’s boss as stating:

“There’s nothing official at the moment. He didn’t play [against Manchester United in the EFL Cup] on Thursday and he didn’t play also in the previous game at Stamford Bridge.”

“He hasn’t trained with the team for the last 12 days and hasn’t been available to play. The player, when he talked with me and with the club, said he wanted to leave.”

“The player did not have one problem with me. When he was available he tried to work and do his best, but for the last 12 days he hasn’t worked with me. When it is official, we need to find a solution to replace the player.”

When will the deal go ahead?

With two bids accepted from two different clubs, Robert Snodgrass will negotiate with both before making a decision. The Scottish international, who has scored nine goals across all competitions this season, has the power in his hands but all parties will want a swift solution.

If completed in time, Snodgrass could make his debut for a new club in the Premier League’s upcoming midweek fixtures and Hull will push a deal through quickly, as the relegation-threatened side will be looking to draft in a replacement.

Five bold January transfers to boost Arsenal’s title charge

Typically for Arsenal, the Gunners are met with both an injury crisis and a ridiculously daunting Champions League tie after finishing second in their group. As Barcelona await, it’s hard to see manager Arsene Wenger navigating his way around the irresistible trident that is Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

However, perhaps not so typically for the side, is the fact they have a very good chance of actually winning the Premier League. Though Leicester sit atop the pile at the present moment, the North London giants will more than likely battle it out with Manchester City for the top prize in England.

Well, that is until we stop writing the Foxes off, of course.

Still, there’s room for improvement. As ever, the engine room is looking a little light in the wake of long term injuries to key duo Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin. The Gunners lack an anchor man to effectively replace the Frenchman, though how long have we been saying that?

Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez remain superstars at the club and perhaps the arrival of some winter reinforcements can help the pair lead Arsenal to the Premier League.

The last time his side were in this position, Wenger only saw fit to sign Kim Kallstrom in January 2014. Hopefully he does not make the same mistake again.

Here are five bold January transfers to help Arsenal win the league…

VICTOR WANYAMA

Wenger has stated that he is not interested in landing Victor Wanyama this January, though perhaps he should not be so quick to completely rule it out. The 24-year old Kenyan bruiser is exactly what his teams have been so desperately lacking over the last few years.

Though Coquelin has surprised everyone and made the anchor man role his own, the Saints star can help provide competition. With the fight for a starting berth so competitive in other positions, it seems odd that the tenacious midfielder is all but guaranteed his spot.

As Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta enter the final six months of their deals, acquiring the former Celtic man would be very wise. Powerful and imposing, he’s exactly what the squad need.

MARCELO BROZOVIC

As far as ball playing midfielders go, the Emirates outfit are pretty well stocked. However, fast forward a few months and things could look a little light. Flamini and Arteta are expected to leave this summer, as is Tomas Rosicky.

Jack Wilshere cannot be relied upon at all to stay fit, so perhaps there is some room for new additions in the middle of the park. Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic has re-emerged as a target this winter, after impressing on loan from Dinamo Kiev.

Reportedly available for around £11.9m, the 23-year old is a classy operator in the middle of the park, a centre-midfielder in an old fashioned mould. Perhaps not as not as talented as Cazorla, the Croatian international is tenacious and has an eye on goal.

When injuries hit, as they so often do in North London, the club can look depleted. A wise move should it come off.

DANIELE RUGANI

Daniele Rugani just can’t get a look in at Juventus, though that does not make him a bad player. The 21-year old has been touted as one of the brightest prospects in Italian football after his stunning form at Empoli last term and has been repeatedly linked to Arsenal.

A classy, ball playing centre-half with an ability to read the game many don’t at his age, he’s the next best option after John Stones. His stoic presence next to Laurent Koscielny could help form a truly solid base at the heart of defence in place of the aging Per Mertesacker.

Wenger should act now, it’s not often a young player with such huge potential becomes available to land from another big club.

NOLITO

It seems Olivier Giroud is either imperious or awful. The Frenchman is either lambasted for not being up to the required standard, or lauded for banging in the goals. It’s an odd predicament for the Gunners, who seem to be unsure whether to stick or twist with him.

Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott support him, and support him well, but another natural centre-forward could be a wise option. Wenger likes his versatility and the Spaniard is equally comfortable leading the line as he is being deployed in a wider area. Lethal in front of goal, the 29-year old could be a short term fix to secure on field success.

Long term planning is all well and good, but Wenger needs to prove he is still capable of leading the team to Premier League glory. Nolito can help him do that.

RIYAD MAHREZ

A move to Arsenal halfway through the sensational season at Leicester City may not be wholly attractive to Riyad Mahrez right now, who’d have thought it? Still, as previously stated, these are bold targets.

The Algerian has been utterly sensational this term with 11 goals and 7 assists as the Foxes outfox the chasing pack in the Premier League. He’s been doing things with his left foot, against big teams, that rival some of the best players in Europe.

While Mesut Ozil is the undisputed Number 10 at the Emirates, Mahrez can play wide and help wreak just as much havoc. The prospect of Mahrez, Ozil and Sanchez lining up behind Walcott/Giroud is mouth-watering. Crucially, it could be title winning.

Manager Roberto Martinez called up the full-back for his team's forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Poland and Liechtenstein. However, Dalot will not participate in either match after leaving his nation's training camp as announced by the Portuguese Football Federation. The 24-year-old's absence has not been formally explained, although he is expecting his first child with his fiancee Claudia Lopes, and that is believed to be the reason behind the right-back pulling out of the squad.

In July, the couple revealed their pregnancy with a post on social media. Dalot and Lopes started dating in 2020, and when the football player went on a year-long loan to AC Milan for the 2020–21 season, his fiancée travelled with him to Italy.

Dalot has 16 caps for Portugal, 12 of which he has earned in the last 24 months. He has started each of his nation's last five games, all of which they have won.

Five uncapped players in England T20 squad

Sam Billings, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey and Mark Wood are the uncapped players England have picked for the only T20 international against New Zealand

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jun-2015Sam Billings, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey and Mark Wood are the uncapped players England have picked for the only T20 international against New Zealand at Old Trafford on June 23. The 13-man squad did not include Stuart Broad, who was removed as T20 captain after Andrew Strauss took over as England’s director of cricket.Only Topley and Vince are not involved in the current ODI series against New Zealand. “This match against New Zealand allows us another opportunity to look at players relatively new to international cricket as we look to build a squad for the World T20 in India this winter,” national selector James Whitaker said. “The squad is made up of players who have demonstrated their ability in domestic cricket and fully deserve a chance to continue their progress against a very good New Zealand side.”We have already seen our limited-overs cricket begin to move in the right direction which is exciting but we are all aware that we have plenty more to do if we are going to challenge the very best sides in the world on a regular basis.”It has been a good few weeks for putative England left-arm quicks. David Willey was called up for the ODI squad against New Zealand, Mark Footitt for the pre-Ashes camp and now Reece Topley, barely back from another injury, for T20. England are anxious for a solution to a long-standing weakness. He told BBC Essex: “It’s probably the biggest jump I’ve ever had in the standard of cricket, but I feel like I can contribute at that level. “I’m very excited about seeing how I do and it’s a good time to assess where I am and what I need to improve on.”Squad Eoin Morgan (capt), Sam Billings, Jos Buttler (wk), Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey, Mark Wood
