Rasool breaks the jinx for Jammu & Kashmir

Parvez Rasool, who played his first match for India in Dhaka on Sunday, finally “broke the ice” and brought an end to the long wait in Jammu & Kashmir of seeing their best cricketer graduate to the top level

Devashish Fuloria15-Jun-2014India’s three-ODI sojourn to Bangladesh may just be a footnote in the international calendar but its relevance had been heightened in the state of Jammu & Kashmir once the team for the tour was announced. Parvez Rasool, who played his first match for India in Dhaka on Sunday, finally “broke the ice” and brought an end to the long wait in J&K to see the best cricketer from the valley graduate to the highest level.Rasool didn’t have to wait long to make impact; he struck on the first ball of his third over with the wicket of Anamul Haque to ease the early nerves that usually follow a much-awaited new arrival. Another wicket in the day must have made it doubly sweet.”It is a proud moment. There was a jinx which wasn’t breaking somehow,” Samiullah Beigh, the J&K fast bowler, told ESPNcricinfo. “We always felt that somebody should break the ice so that cricketers can flow out of this part of the world. There was a mental block that our boys could only make it to a certain level – to zonals or maximum to India A level. We were not able to push it past the glass ceiling. That ceiling has been removed now.”We are all very happy about it. The social media, the news reports that will come out tomorrow about Parvez Rasool making Jammu & Kashmir proud … there has been a buzz about this.”

The former J&K seamer and the current coach, Abdul Qayoom, who has been an inspiration for a lot of J&K cricketers including Rasool, saw the debut as a harbinger, a motivator, for the current and the next crop of state’s cricketers. Coming through the ranks of the state cricket structure, Rasool has been close to most.”The cricketers see him as the same Parvez who used to play with them,” Qayoom said. “He has the same two hands, same pair of legs. So now it makes it clear for youngsters that if they play well, there is no politics standing in their way.”Since his selection in the India A squad in January 2013, Rasool’s default introduction on anything written about him has always mentioned him as the “first cricketer from J&K to..”, almost making him the de facto face of state cricket. The horrifying memories of 2009 had long been shelved. But the last step, that of making it to the national side, had been eluding him.He made it to the India squad that played an ODI series, similar in import to the current one in Bangladesh, in Zimbabwe last September. Despite winning the series, the team management’s decision to keep him out of the XI left Rasool, and his team-mates in the state, disappointed. Qayoom ensured he didn’t let the despair set in. He told Rasool, “You are the one in limelight. (Don’t lose your heart). Maybe the selectors wanted to see something extra in you, so you should work harder to rectify those shortcomings. They should see the difference.”Rasool did stick to the path of self-improvement, following up his excellent 2012-13 season for J&K with solid performances with both bat and ball in the 2013-14 season, during which he led the side too. He scored 594 runs that included a century in the quarter-final against Punjab and ended the season with 33 wickets. The team took all the limelight that has come with Rasool as a boost, broke through to the Ranji knockouts this season and ensured an entry to the more difficult pool next season. The state cricket association, JKCA, has also buckled up and is organising early camps, five months before Ranji, something unusual in the state.”Even till two years ago, we didn’t use to get any cricket in the off season and were picked straight for the Ranji Trophy,” Beigh said. “The new (enthusiasm) that is visible both among the players and the JKCA will have far-reaching consequences.”

Temos bons jogadores. Tudo tranquilo, seguimos em frente – disse.

'We have more positives than them' – Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara said South Africa had more reason to be disappointed after Wanderers

Sidharth Monga in Durban24-Dec-2013

Cheteshwar Pujara said the ball did more when India batted at Wanderers•AFP

India and South Africa know it will be important to put the last draw behind them and start afresh for Durban – which might be difficult with only three days’ gap in between – but India continued to try to claim psychological advantage after they pushed the No. 1 side to the brink in their backyard. Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 153 in the second innings in Johannesburg and was part of the highest partnership of the match, said South Africa had more reason to be disappointed after Wanderers.”If we look at the last game, we have more positives than them because when we batted first the ball was doing a bit,” Pujara said. “We batted well and when they batted in the first innings there wasn’t much help for the bowlers so the kind of comeback we made in [their] first innings. On the last day we were expecting more movement from the cracks but it didn’t happen. So I think they had the opportunity to bat well when the wicket was better and when we batted – even in the second innings – the ball was doing a bit. When they batted, at times there was a little bit of movement but they were lucky enough to survive.”In pushing South Africa to the edge, India also had to bowl their bowlers for longer than they would have liked considering the next Test starts in three days’ time. Two days after the match, Zaheer Khan – he bowled more than he has ever done in a Test – and Ishant Sharma gave the optional training session a miss. Pujara reassured that recovery should not be a problem.”Such close matches you expect in Test format,” Pujara said. “It was a very exciting Test. Don’t think there is any problem with the recovery. We are training a lot so we are fit enough to prepare for the next game, and there were a lot of positives for us to go ahead with a positive frame of mind in this match.”Emotional and mental recovery, though, might be a different issue. “It was difficult because we felt that we had a very good chance to win the match but just one partnership in one particular session didn’t go our way,” Pujara said. “So emotionally and mentally coming out [of it] and playing this match will be important. We have to forget what happened and focus on our plans after looking at the wicket tomorrow and work accordingly.”From what he has seen of South Africa’s batting, Pujara believes India can bowl them out twice. “The kind of batting line-up they have we have got a very good chance to bowl them out,” Pujara said. “Just AB [de Villiers] and Faf [du Plessis] were able to score big runs. Apart from them no one got big runs. So it’s a positive sign for us. We also believe that we can get them out. Also if you look at the last session, they were cautious about not going for the target so they are worried about their tail-enders not batting through. So it’s a positive sign for us.”India will take heart from the fact that Dale Steyn returned his worst figures in a Test, but will also be wary that Steyn, Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis are all unlikely to fail in back-to-back Tests. Pujara was not getting drawn into any complacence regarding Steyn. “It’s a good thing for us that he didn’t get any wickets,” Pujara said, “but he is a good bowler so we don’t want to underestimate him. And we have to be careful against him even in this match so as a team we can’t take him lightly. It’s just that we had very good success, and we will try and continue the same thing in this match.”South Africa’s spinner, though, is a different story. “Think [Imran] Tahir didn’t bowl well,” Pujara said. “Kind of expectations South Africa had of him, he didn’t bowl well enough and they also knew that they would have to bowl [JP] Duminy and him because Morne Morkel was injured in the second innings so we took the advantage and wanted to capitalise when they were on and we were successful. On that wicket there wasn’t much help for the spinners so I don’t want to rate anybody but I think we batted well and Indians are known to bat well against spinners.”South Africa look more positive about Morkel’s fitness than they did during the last Test. Pujara was not praying for his recovery, though. “It will make a huge difference for them because the kind of bounce he gets from the wicket it’s difficult to score runs against,” Pujara said. “They will have to bring in a new fast bowler, so whoever comes in hasn’t been playing for them. Even when they played in Abu Dhabi I don’t think he played that match. It’s a new guy coming in and now they have to think about their bowling line-up. Steyn and Morkel are used to bowling in partnership so it will make a huge difference.”

NZC 'very excited' by prospect of day-night Tests

New Zealand Cricket is “very excited” about the prospect of playing a day-night Test on their tour of Australia in late 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Aug-2013New Zealand Cricket is “very excited” about the prospect of playing a day-night Test on their tour of Australia in late 2015, after Cricket Australia announced plans to trial floodlit long-form cricket in the Sheffield Shield this summer. The Australian Cricketers’ Association said that while it needed to be convinced on several aspects, particularly the durability of the pink ball, it was approaching the issue with an “open mind”.The potential to attract a much larger television viewership in the evening by roping in audiences in India and other big markets was of chief interest to NZC, according to chief executive David White. “‘We are very interested in the concept,”‘ White was quoted as saying in the . “‘I don’t think anyone is trying to make out that this is going to replace Test cricket as we know it. From a New Zealand Cricket perspective, if it’s successful we would maybe play one game a series. It will give people an opportunity to watch the game after work or after school, at the game and on the television, so that’s got commercial possibilities.”‘Our time zone with the northern hemisphere and India is not the most advantageous at the moment. By playing at night it opens up a lot more opportunity from an international broadcast point of view in terms of a better time zone. So there are strong, strong commercial opportunities there for us.'”While the administrators are enticed by the promise of enhanced revenues, ACA chief executive Paul Marsh sounded caution, saying players weren’t entirely convinced yet and would not want the “integrity of the game” to be compromised.”At the moment the support from the players is divided. It’s roughly 50-50 in terms of players who think day-night Test cricket should be pursued and that has moved towards more support over time,” Marsh said. ”Our view on any playing condition has always been that it must be trialled at domestic level before it gets to international level and I’m glad they are going down that path.”In saying that, we are sceptical about the ability of the ball to stand up and that’s been the problem… you don’t want, by going down this path, to lose the integrity of the game and if you have a ball that is not going to stand up for 80 overs, then I think you have to look at it and say it can’t be taken to Test level.”We’re going into this with an open mind but there are issues we believe exist and we would need to be convinced they can be overcome… if all goes well, it is something that could happen.”White said while it was crucial that players are not disadvantaged at any time during the match, including on the visibility front, recent progress in the development of the pink ball had been encouraging. ”There has been talk about the twilight as a difficult time to bat. The ball is really interesting. I think we’re up to version six of the pink ball and initially my understanding was that it discoloured quickly, whereas now it’s a lot better.”

BCCI to take call on Praveen's conduct breach

India seamer Praveen Kumar could be in trouble for a “serious” breach of the players’ code of conduct in a Corporate Trophy game

Amol Karhadkar09-Feb-2013India seamer Praveen Kumar, who is on the comeback trail after missing most of the Ranji season due to the recurrence of a tennis elbow injury, could be in trouble for a “serious” breach of the players’ code of conduct in a Corporate Trophy game. The BCCI is expected to decide on what action, if any, is to be taken against him next week.On February 4, Praveen had sworn at an opposition batsman while playing for Oil and Natural Gas Limited (ONGC) in the Corporate Trophy: he hurled swear words at Income Tax batsman Ajitesh Argal despite the on-field umpires warning him. The umpires subsequently charged him for a code of conduct breach and match referee Dhananjay Singh found him guilty on two counts.According to the match referee’s report, which is in possession of ESPNcricinfo, Praveen pleaded guilty on both charges, under clause 2.2.8 and 2.4.2. “As per the BCCI guidelines, the penalty imposed for the offence is a 100% fine of the match fee under Level-2 (for repeating the offence within 12 months) and a serious warning not to indulge in such acts in future. For the other offence, you are charged during the same ball. The matter has been referred to chief administrative office [CAO] of the BCCI for further action, since it is charged under Level-4,” Dhananjay Singh wrote in his report, which was submitted to the BCCI.As per the BCCI procedures, after the report has been submitted, the CAO is supposed to take a call on the matter within seven days. So, Ratnakar Shetty is expected to decide on how the case will move forward during the coming week. If Praveen, who is contracted with the BCCI, is found guilty, he could be banned for up to four matches.”Whatever the action or decision will be, the board won’t discuss it in public,” a BCCI official said.Besides submitting the report, Dhananjay Singh has also written a letter to BCCI’s game development manager, KVP Rao, questioning Praveen’s mental condition. He wrote: “I would like to report to you that at present Mr Praveen Kumar is not in a mental frame to play the game. He is very aggressive and gets hostile with little trigger. He is very abusive and passes very filthy comments to his own team-mates, opponents and even to spectators. During the first match also (ONGC v CAG on February 1) he had a spat with spectators at the international stadium in Raipur. It was told to me by the other match referee Mr Prakash Bhatt. Even his own team-mates are keeping some distance from him.”The episode highlighted Praveen’s tendency to lose his temper frequently. In 2008, he had allegedly come to blows with a doctor during a fracas in Meerut, his hometown. During India’s tour to the West Indies in 2011, Praveen was involved in a spat with spectators in Port of Spain. Soon after, during the series in England where he proved his worth as a Test bowler, he had reacted angrily to fans’ taunts during a tour game in Northamptonshire.
