Friendly foes await Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka’s fickle cricketing landscape, Pakistan have lately been viewed as one of the team’s friendliest foes. Sri Lanka fans’ admiration for Pakistan’s cricket has been founded on shared ground. Most obviously, there is resemblance in cricketing philosophy; Lasith Malinga and Sohail Tanvir are products of their unique milieu, but it is not difficult to imagine a round-arm slinger from Rawalpindi, or a wrong-footed left armer from Rathgama. No other nation, perhaps, could have easily produced either. There is also the rich recent history of spin, shrouded in mystery. Between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, they have owned the progenitor of the in Saqlain Mushtaq, the man who made the ball famous in Muttiah Muralitharan, its best current practitioner in Saeed Ajmal, and a rising bowler with an improving version of the ball, in Sachithra Senanayake. Then there are the shambolic administrations, which more often appear to hinder the national sides than support them, while Sri Lanka’s newly-formed one-sided rivalry with India has bred another thread of fraternal goodwill. Coincidentally too, the tour will be both Dav Whatmore and Graham Ford’s final weeks in charge of their sides. The former was effectively let go, the latter chose to walk. Both sides also have produced alluring players of spin, many of whom have retired or are just about to, and young men are now charged with filling shoes and scoreboards. In that regeneration, though, there are mutual hints of decline.Ten months of selection policy focused on grooming the next generation has not future-proofed Sri Lanka’s batting unit yet. Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne have had encouraging returns in Tests, but their limited-overs statistics don’t yet suggest they are the next Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara – whom they will inevitably be compared with. Jayawardene’s absence from the limited-overs leg of this series may allow both batsmen to bat higher up in the order, which should suit their abilities better than the finishing roles they had been saddled with.In Tests, both teams will also be fielding young, inexperienced opening pairs. Shan Masood and Khurram Manzoor are at almost identical places in their career as Sri Lanka’s likely openers, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva. All four have a shot at embedding themselves in the international arena, on tracks that should not be far from those on which they excel at home.Though they are at disparate ends of their careers, there are similarities for the teams’ main captains too. Misbah-ul-Haq is an unpopular captain for some, and while Angelo Mathews has had moderate success at the helm, he is still treading lightly as a leader and his personal form has been inconsistent. A poor tour for either man might have loosened their grip on the reins, only, there are few viable alternatives. The teams are well-matched on most counts. Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 1-0 in their last Test series in the UAE, but Sri Lanka reversed that scoreline at home, when they dominated the three-match series last year. Sri Lanka’s batting perhaps gives them the edge in ODIs and Twenty20s, while Pakistan have just returned from a successful trip to South Africa, where the highly-rated India side is presently being humiliated. And, perhaps, that is Pakistan’s greatest advantage in the approach to the tour. While Sri Lanka have been reduced to playing matches against themselves and watching rain ruin their first meaningful cricket since July, Pakistan are fighting-fit from five months on the international treadmill. Their Test loss to Zimbabwe in September now seems a distant memory, after more encouraging results against South Africa.Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have not played overseas since July, and in Tests, the New Year’s Eve match will be their first against a top-eight opposition since this year’s New Year Test in Sydney. One of the foremost reasons Sri Lanka Cricket refused Pakistan’s request to play one Test under lights is because its players would already be adjusting to playing Tests again; an orange ball and floodlights may have complicated preparation further – particularly as there are no practice matches before the Tests. There is already buzz in Sri Lanka for this tour, primarily because the public has had so long to look forward to it. It is a stage for young men of both teams to make defining plays, and with two major limited-overs trophies now on the horizon, raising stakes further, the subplots unfolding over a six-week battle may prove just as engrossing as the major narrative.

Croft, Cross only winners on dull day

All results were just about possible by the close last night but this game between two of the second division’s promotion favourites turned into the dullest of stalemates

David Lloyd at the Ageas Bowl26-May-2013
ScorecardGareth Cross made his first century for two years•Getty ImagesThere are many worse ways to spend a sunny Sunday, of course, but after teasing onlookers into believing that all results were just about possible by the close last night, this game between two of the second division’s promotion favourites turned into the dullest of stalemates.Fortunately for county cricket, it is watched, in the main, by folk who are long on patience. But if there were any first-time spectators here today then goodness knows what they made of an exercise in pointlessness for all but Steven Croft and Gareth Cross, who scored their first Championship centuries of the season.Actually, that’s not quite fair. Points were the whole point of it. Lancashire, sitting joint second in the table after this draw, remain 10 points ahead of Hampshire, an advantage which could be crucial come the end of the season. Had they pressed for a victory by declaring and lost, a gamble might have looked reckless to the Old Trafford faithful. But surely a token effort to win could have been made through the visitors giving themselves perhaps 40 overs to capture 10 wickets while denying Hampshire even a sniff of success? Instead, they batted on and on until hands were shaken, spectators were woken from their slumbers and everyone went home.Lancashire have a bit of previous on this ground. Seven years ago, at the end of a season and with nothing at stake, the then home captain, Shane Warne, was furious that the Red Rose declined to make a game of it – and he demonstrated his displeasure by bowling bouncers. This time, the only on-field retort came from occasional bowler Michael Carberry, who was tossed the ball and invited to go through a series of impressions which looked to include Makhaya Ntini and Alex Tudor. But the real villain of the piece was the weather which shortened the contest by 88 overs. And had it not been for some exciting action on the third day, no-one would have dreamed of a positive result being even remotely possible.Lancashire looked to be taking firm control when Glen Chapple struck four times in the space of six balls. Then the balance of power shifted sharply in Hampshire’s favour as they grabbed three quick wickets following George Bailey’s excellent counterattack. The best hope of a riveting contest today rested with Hampshire making regular inroads once Lancashire resumed, 100 runs ahead, on 63 for 3. But their successes were too few and too far between, although Sean Ervine did try to force the issue during a lively spell that included several sharp bouncers and he was rewarded with the wickets of Andrea Agathangelou and Karl Brown.Therafter, Lancashire made serene progress without ever suggesting they were interested in a declaration. Cross will no doubt take confidence from his first century for two years but most other people will be happy to forget the final chapter of this match.”With us being three down overnight Hampshire fancied bowling us out and we had to bat long enough to make it safe,” Lancashire coach Peter Moores said. “We had to fight pretty hard for two thirds of the day and then it was not the sort of pitch we were going to bowl them out on in 40 overs.”Moores also mentioned time lost to bad weather – a point accepted by Hampshire’s captain. “It’s a bit frustrating but losing a day to rain made it tricky,” Jimmy Adams said. “I think both sides were fairly optimistic we could have a good final day’s cricket but unfortunately it didn’t pan out that way.”

Nicholas Pooran, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) No. 3, is still on top of the run-scorers’ table, with 201 runs from four innings, but other batters are catching up with him.Like MI’s Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar has been one of the brightest spots in an otherwise bleak MI set-up, and his sequence of 29, 48, 27*, 67 and 28 has taken him to No. 2, knocking Mitchell Marsh out of the top three.GT opener B Sai Sudharsan has moved down to third spot after Monday’s game. He has scores of 5, 49, 63 and 74 – 191 runs from four innings.Hardik Pandya has been among the wickets for MI•Associated Press

Purple Cap leaderboardNoor Ahmad, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) left-arm wristspinner, has been joined by MI captain Hardik Pandya at the top, both returning ten wickets so far, from four games each. Noor has a better economy rate, though – 7.86 – compared to Hardik’s 8.57.There’s a tie just below them, too.Mitchell Starc is at third place, since his nine wickets have come from one fewer bowling innings, three, as compared to Mohammed Siraj’s nine from four.Starc has been one of the standout strike bowlers in the tournament so far, returning 3 for 42, 5 for 35 and 1 for 27, while Siraj has got a move on after a poor start. After figures of none for 54 in his first appearance of the season, Siraj has picked up 2 for 34, 3 for 19 and 4 for 17 to move up the ladder quickly.

Need to attack India spinners – Taylor

Ross Taylor remained positive ahead of the Bangalore Test and called for an adventurous approach to overcome New Zealand’s indecisive batting against the India spinners

Siddarth Ravindran in Bangalore30-Aug-2012During his time at IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, Ross Taylor quickly established himself as a fan favourite due to the ease and frequency with which his swipes cleared the mid-wicket boundary. Back in Bangalore as captain of a stuttering New Zealand outfit, he’ll have to play more in the manner he did at the pre-match press conference: with a straight bat. Nearly every question Taylor was asked dealt either with New Zealand’s dip in form or his own lack of big scores. All of which he answered with tact and optimism.Taylor was asked whether his side would be satisfied with a draw in Bangalore, a result most observers would call a reasonable achievement for the underdogs as they haven’t won a Test in India since 1988. Taylor acknowledged the challenge ahead but remained positive. “In a Test match, we go session by session. In the last three or four Tests, (we have realised) it only takes one bad session to ruin a Test. So we don’t want to look too far ahead. And, we’re still in the series, we have not won many Tests in India and we need to be brave and courageous in the way we go in this Test. We have nothing to lose.”Taylor called for a similarly adventurous approach to overcome New Zealand’s biggest weakness on this tour, the indecisive batting against the spinners. “(We have to) attack Ashwin and [Pragyan] Ojha and hopefully put pressure back on them. And when we attack them, there hopefully won’t be many men around the bat.”In the past 12 months, New Zealand’s misfiring batsmen have put up a 300-plus total only three times, including twice against also-rans Zimbabwe. It is the sort of record that prompted some stinging criticism from former New Zealand coach Mark Greatbatch, who earlier this week questioned whether New Zealand’s batsmen were taking on board what they were being taught. Taylor refused to be drawn into saying whether the comments were justified. “Our biggest critics are ourselves,” Taylor said. “Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I myself am very hard on myself. No matter what others say, I was very disappointed in the way I played.”Taylor has a massive role to play in New Zealand’s brittle middle-order, especially in the absence of Jesse Ryder and Daniel Vettori. The manner of his second-innings dismissal in Hyderabad – bowled after shouldering arms to an offspinner from Ashwin – will rankle, and adds to a dismal recent record, with only two Test centuries in his previous 30 innings stretching back to March 2010.Taylor held out hope of an upswing in his batting form. “Two hundreds in 30 innings is not great, but I feel I’m not far away from scoring runs. I’m working hard. When you score two centuries in 30 innings, sometimes you score two in two games. So you never know.”Besides winning over sceptical former players and critics in the media, Taylor has an added reason to perform in Bangalore. “Mackenzie has been to 2 games, I’ve scored 11, 0, 2 and 7,” he tweeted. “Thinks it’s time I showed my daughter that I can bat.”
