Barcelona fans react to Lionel Messi injury update

Barcelona’s day suddenly got a lot worse and for once, it’s not about Neymar Junior.

RAC1, usually a really reliable source for all things Barcelona, came out with news that Lionel Messi’s injury has taken a turn for the worse and that the Blaugrana’s star player will be out for longer than expected – potentially another month.

Messi has already missed the first two clashes against Athletic Bilbao and Real Betis but was recovering well and everything pointed towards a quick return to action.

Still, if this news is to be believed, we won’t be seeing the Argentine on the pitch for a while longer.

And it’s safe to say that the news left most of the Barcelona fans in disbelief as they were all looking forward to seeing the little magician play after a while out. Messi has been carrying this injury since he returned back from his holiday.

You can see some of the reactions of the fans in the tweets below:

Luckily for Barcelona, though, it seems that the extent of the injury is not as bad as was initially thought but Messi will take somewhat longer to return nonetheless.

QPR fans slam Yoann Barbet’s defending in 2-0 defeat against Portsmouth

[ad_pod ]

Lots of QPR fans have taken to Twitter to point the finger at Yoann Barbet once again, after the Frenchman’s alarming lack of awareness saw Portsmouth score a simple second goal in their 2-0 Carabao Cup win.

The R’s supporters on Twitter have already slammed the summer signing from Brentford for his dismal performance in the recent 3-1 loss to Swansea, and they have wasted no time in hurling criticism at the 26-year-old once again after a quite shocking piece of defending against Pompey – if you can even call it defending, that is.

Marcus Harness had an easy tap in to score Portsmouth’s second goal in just four minutes as the 6ft 2 defender was caught jogging back whilst watching the ball, a mistake – or lack of desire depending on your interpretation – that allowed Harness to easily sneak into the box and slot home with ease.

It was a quite shocking lack of quality from a professional footballer which would even have drawn criticism in Sunday League football, let alone for a Championship side in the Carabao Cup.

Quite rightly, lots of QPR supporters on Twitter have heavily criticised Barbet for the glaring error…

Danny Mills’ recent prediction outlines one key positive of new Leeds addition

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to Football Insider, Danny Mills has made the bold claim that one of Liam Cooper or Pontus Jansson could potentially be dropped ahead of the start of the season following the signing of Ben White.

Although the quotes could be taken negatively as it alludes to Leeds leaving a key player out, there are still plenty of positives to be found.

What’s been said then?

The former England international claimed that one of Leeds’ centre-backs could be in jeopardy of losing their spot.

“There will be real competition for places now,” he said. “You could see Jansson and White starting together in central defence, or White and Cooper,” Mills told Football Insider,

“You need that competition. If there’s no competition for places, even the best can get complacent. We saw last season that Leeds were short in that position, and Kalvin Phillips had to drop back for a few months when Cooper was injured.

“Cooper is a good, steady player. He had some very good performances last season and the odd mistake here and there. He has improved a lot since he joined Leeds, but you have to keep improving every season. If you stand still, you go backwards.

“He could easily start the season on the sidelines, especially if he’s not performing to the level Bielsa wants in training.”

Key positive

Jansson and Cooper both arguably had the best seasons of their career last campaign as they earnt spots in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, but with more competition for their spot this term they may be forced to up their game even further.

Indeed, the Swede and the captain have become real fans’ favourites at Elland Road, but that doesn’t mean their places in the starting XI are secure.

Mills clearly rates White, and if he begins to play well in training, the current centre-half pairing will have to step things up in order to stay in the team.

In signing the Brighton youngster on loan, Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t only added depth to his squad, but he has also created some friendly competition that could see his current stars improve.

Aaron Ramsey in good spirits in Instagram snap ahead of Juventus move

[ad_pod ]

As of July 1, Aaron Ramsey will officially be wearing the white and black jersey of Juventus and will leave Arsenal behind.

The Welsh midfielder has spent his entire career at the Emirates, going through various loan spells at the very beginning but then, from 2011, he finally became a standard figure at the club.

But both teams have already confirmed that the 28-year-old’s contract won’t be renewed so his departure is very much imminent and set in stone. Still, that hasn’t stopped him from having a great time enjoying his holiday with his family and he took to

Ramsey very much seems at peace with everything that has transpired and despite having Arsenal forever in his heart, he will move on towards a different challenge in Italy this summer.

As for his Arsenal adventure – he played a total of 371 games, scoring 65 goals and assisting the same number while wearing the Gunners’ colours.

Aston Villa Transfer Roundup: Blackett-Taylor’s new club, Webster update, approach rejected for Phillips

[ad_pod ]

What does Dean Smith have in store for the rest of the summer transfer window? We are sure to find out over the coming weeks. But Thursday’s Villa transfer roundup includes a confirmed exit, an update in the pursuit of a Championship defender and news on the interest in a 23-year-old English midfielder.

Blackett-Taylor leaves

Corey Blackett-Taylor has joined Tranmere Rovers it was confirmed on Wednesday. The winger signed a two-year contract with the Merseyside outfit after rising through the ranks of Aston Villa’s academy.

Villa to make new bid for Webster

Thursday’s print edition of The Daily Mirror (June 27, page 65) reported that Aston Villa will make an improved bid for Bristol City’s Adam Webster. Sky Sports had reported on Wednesday that the Villans had made a £12m bid for the central defender, with other reports stating that Bristol are holding out for £30m.

Leeds reject Phillips approach

Leeds have knocked back an approach from Aston Villa for midfielder Kalvin Phillips according to Football Insider. The Whites have made it clear Phillips is not for sale as they look to hold onto him at all costs this summer.

Portsmouth: Matt Clarke will be making a mistake leaving Pompey for Brighton

With the League One season all done and dusted, attention can now all turn to the summer transfer window, and for Portsmouth, they are likely to be one of the more busier sides in the market.

Kenny Jackett’s side came close to an automatic promotion spot in the league and will likely be favourites next season to seal one of these positions in the table, but to do that, Portsmouth have to play the transfer market well, bringing in players that push the south coast side over the finish line whilst trying to retain the stars that flourished, and one of these names is Matt Clarke.

The defender has continued his incredible rise to prominence with another outstanding season with Pompey, and his performances have caught the eye of Premier League side Brighton, who according to the Portsmouth News are the frontrunner for Clarke this summer.

The 22-year-old, who is valued at £180,000 on Transfermarkt, no doubt has the potential to one day play in the Premier League, but at this stage in his career, a move to the English top flight might be too soon for Clarke.

Clarke will barely feature for a team that bolsters one of the better defences in the bottom half of the Premier League teams, meaning unless the former Ipswich academy product goes out on loan, the defender could miss a season or two of first-team football.

The money would be helpful for Portsmouth, but for both club and player, it will be best if Clarke remains with the League One side for another season.

Portsmouth fans, can the club keep hold of Clarke this summer? Let us know!

Just shoot me: Leeds fans downbeat after Roofe injury

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter all of a sudden aren’t feeling too confident about their side’s chances in the playoffs after Kemar Roofe was ruled out of the second leg of their tie with Derby County.

The striker scored the only goal of the game in the first leg at Pride Park, which sees the Whites head back to Elland Road with a slight advantage over the Rams.

Roofe has an outstanding record against Frank Lampard’s side this season, scoring four goals in three games against his team’s playoff semi-final opponents.

His absence won’t help the Yorkshire club’s chances of getting to Wembley, as they will now be without their top goalscorer for their most crucial game of the season.

Patrick Bamford is the logical replacement for the 26-year-old as he has now served his two-game suspension.

Understandably this update has worried a lot of Leeds supporters after they lost their first-choice striker.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Season Review: Tottenham Hotspur

So then, another season of the Premier League is done and dusted and it’s time for the 20 teams to start reviewing their campaigns and putting plans in place for the 2019/2020 term.

Little has changed at the top of the league with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City marching to back-to-back English top-flight titles after the title race went right down to the wire.

However, the battle for the top four was just as absorbing with Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United tussling fiercely in the final few matchdays to clinch those elusive final two UEFA Champions League spots. Spurs eventually prevailing by finishing fourth, a point ahead of bitter rivals the Gunners.

But it wasn’t just in the league where Mauricio Pochettino’s men were successful in 2018/2019. They may have bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup at the fourth-round stage, but they reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and have made it to the UEFA Champions League final, where they will face Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium at the end of May, for the first time.

In light of all this, today we review the season so far of the North Londoners, from what needs to be done in the summer to improve, to Goal of the Season and whether their campaign can truly be regarded as a success or a failure…

What needs to be done this summer to improve?

As good as Pochettino’s men’s term may have been, there is still certainly room to improve in the summer, especially in terms of the squad. And more specifically, the central midfield area.

Ever since Mousa Sissoko left for the Chinese Super League in January, the North Londoners’ haven’t been the same in the centre of the park. And if they want to improve in the summer, they must find a proper replacement for the Belgian international.

Worst result – Wolves (H) – 1-3

Tottenham’s worst result of the season undoubtedly came in the form of a sour late Christmas present, a 3-1 late-December home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Not only was it Spurs’ joint-worst league loss of 2018/2019 in terms of margin, it also came at a pivotal time. A time where the team was very much in the title race, however, late goals from Willy Boly, Raul Jimenez and Helder Costa at Wembley quickly changed that fact.

Flop of the Season – Dele Alli

After a superb first three seasons in Spurs colours, England attacking midfielder Dele Alli has bizarrely largely gone missing this term and therefore, is the clear Lilywhites Flop of the Season.

Having registered just five Premier League goals and three assists amongst a whole host of other underwhelming statistics in the other competitions, many are now saying that Alli should be dropped for the Champions League final. A year ago, supporters wouldn’t have dreamed of axing the 23-year-old for the biggest match in the club’s history.

Who should be sold?

Tottenham, without doubt, could do with ousting a few players in the summer transfer window with at least three of their stars on the should-be-sold list.

The first is goalkeeper, club captain and ever-inconsistent Hugo Lloris. He is joined by right-back Kieran Trippier who shouldn’t get away with a campaign as poor as that at a top side. And the third is Dutch striker Vincent Janssen – simply not good enough for Spurs and the Premier League.

Unsung Hero – Lucas Moura

Every term, your club has an unsung hero and in the case of the Lilywhites and the 2018/2019 season, that player has been Brazilian attacker Lucas Moura.

The 26-year-old has not received anything like the credit of names such as Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen, though has been just as important – popping up with 15 goals in all competitions, including the last-gasp winner at Ajax in the Champions League semi-final second leg.

Best signing – N/A

To have a best signing of the season, you have to had made some signings in the first place and that’s something Spurs failed to do in both transfer windows over the course of the season.

Chairman Daniel Levy has often been criticised for not dipping into his pockets enough in the market and 2018/2019 is surely the biggest example of him being guilty of that. With a couple of new recruits, Tottenham may have had the edge to challenge Man City and Liverpool for the title more fiercely.

Is the manager safe? – Yes

Following a groundbreaking season, the highlight of which has been reaching the last two of Europe’s premier club competition and having a shot at becoming the best side in the continent, you would have to feel that Pochettino is safe – regardless of what the result turns out to be in Madrid.

However, that doesn’t mean that the Argentine will still be at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for 2019/2020. He could well choose to leave at the start of the summer and would not be short of suitors elsewhere.

Goal of the Season

Whether it be pieces of individual brilliance or incredible team moves, there have been plenty of contenders for Hotspur Goal of the Season.

But none of them quite of the standard of Son’s stunning solo effort in the Premier League victory over Chelsea. Collecting the ball from Alli on the break, the South Korean danced past Jorginho and David Luiz before slotting home in a crowd of opposing players to put the cherry on the cake of a fantastic London derby triumph.

Who should be signed in the summer?

As aforementioned, recruitment is a must at White Hart Lane in May, June, July and August and among a wealth of stars linked with a move or discussed, three of them are must-haves.

Firstly, Lloris is going to need a replacement and what better new number one than the man regarded to be the best in the world, David de Gea? So too Trippier and Janssen and they should be upgraded by the capture of Crystal Palace hotshot Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Fulham hitman Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Best result – Borussia Dortmund (H) – 3-0

Tottenham displayed their intent and quality to the whole of Europe midway through the season by thrashing German giants Borussia Dortmund 3-0.

This result of the season for the North Londoners arrived in the first leg of the Champions League round-of-16 and was sealed by Son, Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente strikes. It was also significant in virtually securing the club’s place in the quarter-finals where they would sleigh Man City.

Leeds United: Losing Kalvin Phillips this summer would be disastrous for the Whites

It has been quite a year for Kalvin Phillips at Leeds United, hasn’t it?

One of a plethora of players who have benefited from chairman Andrea Radrizzani’s decision to appoint Marcelo Bielsa as the Whites’ manager last summer, the 23-year-old has taken his game to new heights in recent months.

A fantastic midfielder who has an eye for a pass as well as tackle, Phillips was undeniably one of the main reasons for why Leeds were able to secure a third-place finish in the Championship during the 2018/19 campaign.

Yet despite delivering two outstanding individual performances in the play-offs against Derby County, he was ultimately powerless to stop his side from crashing out of the competition last Wednesday.

With Leeds facing another season in the second tier, it is clear that in order to be competitive, they must do everything they can to convince Phillips to stay at Elland Road. Indeed, losing the midfielder could prove to be very costly as his defensive contributions were priceless this season and it would be almost impossible to find a midfielder like the Englishman who has the ability to fit in at the heart of the defence as well.

The middle of midfield is such a key position as everything goes through Phillips, with attacks often being started, opposition attacks being halted and he also chips in with the odd contribution in the final third. It would be almost impossible to replace him at Elland Road, which is why Leeds’ play-off bid could be over before it’s already begun.

According to Football Insider, the midfielder is reportedly on the radar of AFC Bournemouth who are keen to add him to their growing roster of young, exciting British players.

Having already completed the signing of England under-21 international Lloyd Kelly from Bristol City, it would not be at all surprising if Eddie Howe does indeed swoop for Phillips in the coming weeks. Although Bielsa will be reluctant to let the midfielder leave given his influence for the Whites, he may be tempted to sell him if the Cherries come in with a big offer.

However, with the Whites’ future at stake, it is clear that the Argentine should not even consider letting Phillips leave when the transfer window opens in July as if he does, it could lead to disaster.

Without the midfielder’s domineering presence next season, it would not be at all surprising if Leeds end up struggling to compete in the Championship.

What do you think Whites fans? How important is it that Bielsa convinces Phillips to stay this summer? Are you confident that your side can bounce back next season? Let us know below.
