In Focus: Roma want Martial on loan

According to The Mirror, Roma are attempting to sign Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial on loan for the 2017-18 campaign.

What’s the story?

Having sold Mohamed Salah to Liverpool in this summer’s transfer window, it is understood that Roma are on the lookout for a new wide player ahead of the new season.

According to The Mirror, the Italian club’s leading transfer target is France international Martial, who struggled for form under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford last term.

Martial has travelled with the Man United squad for their pre-season tour of the United States, but Roma are also due in North America later this month, and it is thought that the Serie A outfit will attempt to thrash out a deal with the Premier League club whilst overseas.

Martial scored 17 goals during his first season at Man United, but the 21-year-old only netted eight times in 42 appearances during the 2016-17 season as he struggled to hold down a regular spot in Mourinho’s first XI.

Can Man United afford to let him leave?

Romelu Lukaku will soon be confirmed as a Man United player, but Wayne Rooney has left Man United, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic has not been offered a new 12-month contract.

Ibrahimovic will continue to train with Man United as he recovers from a serious knee injury, but the Swede, who could reportedly be offered a short-term contract by Mourinho, will not be available until early 2018.

Marcus Rashford is currently Man United’s only senior forward, and the 19-year-old played much of last season in a wide position, which is an indication of the lack of options, currently at least, in that area of the field.

Martial was selected at centre-forward in the latter stages of the season, and there were signs that the former AS Monaco youngster could have a long-term future in that particular role.

Roma will seemingly push hard for Martial this summer, but it is extremely difficult to imagine Man United allowing the attacker to leave, especially considering the form that he showed during the 2015-16 season.

Ivan Perisic might yet arrive from Inter Milan, but there is no question that Martial has a big role to play for the 20-time English champions next season.

Wayne Rooney is breaking Premier League records as well as club ones

With Liverpool losing in the early Premier League kick-off, Manchester United travelled to Stoke City with the opportunity to move to within two points of their arch rivals in the league table.Mark Hughes’ side didn’t stick the script, taking a shock lead in the first half which they held until stoppage time at the end of the game. It was a Juan Mata OG that gave them that lead, diverting a Marko Arnautovic cross past David De Gea at his near post. The Potters held firm from that point on but eventually succumbed to the pressure that United put on them. That was thanks to Wayne Rooney. His wonderful free-kick just when it looked like United’s unbeaten streak would come to an end rescued a point, but also made history. He became Manchester United’s all time leading goalscorer, bringing his total to 250 goals, 1 past Sir Bobby Charlton’s 249.Not only that, but as this stat by Opta shows, he also broke another record on Saturday, a Premier League one.

88 away league goals. That highlights his importance to Manchester United over the years and also demonstrates the quality he has in front of goal, considering he leads every other player in the competition.

It seems that despite being well into his thirties, Rooney is still a very important player at Old Trafford, and beyond.

The Liverpool summer signing that might never play for the club again

When a new manager comes to a club, it is an open invitation for players to be given a fresh breath of life and a chance for those on the fringes to prove they are good enough for the starting XI.

At Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp’s arrival has sparked excitement for two main reasons given his extraordinary track record of success with Borussia Dortmund.

The German is a renowned man manager and as such he is expected to get the best from the current Reds squad, meanwhile his reputation in the European game is believed to be a real bonus in helping Liverpool attract quality additions.

However, for a host of the current squad, it appears that the dismissal of Brendan Rodgers could well mark the end of the line for their careers on Merseyside.

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

There is no doubting that some of the Liverpool squad, such as Joe Allen, Kolo Toure and Lazar Markovic, were players that the Northern Irishman rated and wanted to sign.

However, with Klopp’s arrival their time could well be up.

One of the most unlucky players in the Liverpool ranks is Danny Ings, who could well find chances to play for the club again in the future fleeting.

The former Burnley forward is another of the current contingent that was clearly brought to Anfield with Rodgers’ backing, but now finds himself in no man’s land after the manager’s exit.

Tellingly, Ings was starting to get a chance in the Reds’ first team due to continued injuries to others, with the likes of Christian Benteke and Daniel Sturridge struggling for availability.

Although the Englishman was used in both a wide role and in his preferred centre forward position by Rodgers before he left, Ings had started to prove himself as good enough to feature for the historic club.

The striker’s first taste of a Merseyside derby was a bittersweet affair, with the attacker scoring for Liverpool at Goodison Park before things started to go wrong.

A serious injury has now threatened to keep the former Burnley man out of action for the remainder of the season, while Rodgers, the man who believed in him and brought him to Anfield, was sacked after the 1-1 draw with Everton.

While others have had the chance to prove themselves to Klopp in training and on the pitch, Ings will become something of a forgotten man.

By the time he is ready to return to the fold, the German trainer will surely have already completely assessed his squad, making a shortlist of players that he can count on and others that he does not rate.

Klopp will have ambitions of strengthening his contingent both in January and specifically next summer, with a host of new players expected to be headhunted by the talismanic trainer.

As such, Ings may well find his time on Anfield bittersweet, with terrible luck in getting injured and a chance in manager making his task to establish himself all the more difficult.

Romelu Lukaku returns to Inter: Football's most infamous mercenary set to feel the wrath of San Siro

The Belgian looked set to rejoin the Nerazzurri on a permanent transfer during the summer, but was secretly trying to secure a move to Juventus

Jose Mourinho has been at it again this week. In between expressing his astonishment at being sent off for mocking Monza's coach last Sunday, he has been feigning surprise at the furore surrounding Romelu Lukaku's imminent return to San Siro.

"I didn't think Lukaku was so important in Milan," the Roma coach told reporters on Wednesday. "What Romelu did in Milan – winning a Scudetto and some cups – has been done by 200 players in the history of Inter.

"So, it's interesting: Lukaku [moving] from Inter to Roma to help his coach (Mourinho) is a drama. But (Hakan) Calhanoglu from AC Milan to Inter is a marvel. And (Fabio) Cannavaro from Inter to Juventus or (Christian) Vieri from Inter to Milan, no problem.

"But Lukaku from Inter to Roma has become something that scares me, because I didn't think Lukaku had such an important place in the heart of a club like Inter. It surprises me."

Mourinho, though, knows exactly why the entire build-up to Sunday's Serie A game is focused on Lukaku. The Belgian was meant to be wearing Inter's colours at San Siro – not the red of Roma – and the way in which Lukaku went from one to the other remains a very hot topic at La Pinetina.

Getty Images'He who betrayed our jersey'

Mourinho has already tried to make light of the situation, arguing back in September on that "Inter have no reason to be angry [with Lukaku] because… they already have an extraordinary team, with many attackers. They should be happy for their former coach, who really needed Romelu."

However, Inter fans don't love Mourinho that much. Their enduring affection for the charismatic manager that led them to a historic treble in 2010 won't in any way, shape or form take the edge off what is expected to be a vitriolic expression of hatred for a player that broke their hearts not once – but twice. Indeed, Inter ultras have been waiting for this game ever since the fixture list for the 2023-24 campaign came out.

"October 29 is a date we should circle in the calendar so we can be ready to let him hear all our disgust that we feel towards someone who turned his back on us in the most shameful way," the Curva Nord group said in a statement. "A character who proved himself to be a small man because before being a champion, you must be a man and know how to keep your word. We defended you with swords drawn and you repaid us by turning your back.

"Before the game against Roma, the Curva Nord will hand out 50,000 whistles to be used at every touch of the ball from he who betrayed our jersey. Let us all show how someone who proved himself unworthy to wear this shirt ought to be treated."

AdvertisementGetty Images'It was a moment to be silent'

The fans' fury is undeniably understandable. Lukaku recently claimed that "everyone would be shocked" if they knew the truth about what went down during the summer and that there were moments in which he was so upset by the "rubbish" being reported in the press that he felt like he was going to "explode".

Yet he refused to shed any light on the supposedly extenuating circumstances surrounding his shock decision to pull out of a transfer to Inter in the most disrespectful fashion possible.

"It was a moment to be silent and focus on myself," he said. "I concentrated on what I can do well: play football." Consequently, nothing new has been added to the narrative. The story remains the same.

Only July 14, Inter agreed – after lengthy negotiations with Chelsea that were assisted by Lukaku's representatives, Roc Nation Sports – to make the striker's loan stay at San Siro permanent for €35 million plus €5m in add-ons – which was quite the investment for the cash-strapped Nerazzurri.

But then, when they tried to contact Lukaku, nothing. Despite numerous attempts, via various mediums, Inter's management team couldn't reach the forward – or his lawyer, Sebastien Ledure. Even Lukaku's closest friends in the San Siro dressing room were given the same silent treatment.

Getty Images'Are you sure he wants to join you?'

According to the , though, there had been warning signs that Lukaku, despite all of his previous public proclamations of love for Inter and the city Milan, had gone cold on the deal. Neither he nor his lawyer had "over-extended" themselves during the transfer talks. He'd also stopped responding to Whatsapp messages and texts from team-mates.

Most tellingly of all, Chelsea's negotiating team had even asked their Inter counterparts on the morning of the agreement, "Are you sure he wants to join you?" Word of a U-turn had got back to the Blues – but not Inter, who then spent the following hours scrambling around trying to find out what was going on. Serie A rivals Juventus and AC Milan both confirmed that they had spoken with Lukaku's representatives.

Inter were furious, particularly as the secret talks with Juve were so far advanced. Club president Steven Zhang and his directors agreed to immediately sever all ties with Lukaku and his team.

When Lukaku belatedly spoke with Piero Ausilio over the phone, the conversation lasted 30 seconds, the Inter sporting director reportedly informed the attacker that the deal was dead and the club no longer wanted anything to do with him.

GettyThrowing his toys out of the pram

It was a view shared by Simone Inzaghi's squad. Amid talk of the transfer being resurrected later in the window, after Chelsea and Juventus failed to agree a player-plus-cash deal involving Lukaku and Dusan Vlahovic, Inter's most influential players, Lautaro Martinez, Nicolo Barella, Federico Dimarco and Alessandro Bastoni, made it clear that their former friend was no longer welcome in the dressing room.
As for Inzaghi, he's refused to criticise Lukaku, saying only that he was "an excellent signing" for Roma, who took the No.9 on loan with a view to a permanent £37m move next summer.

But it's clear that the coach's decision to start Edin Dzeko alongside Martinez in last season's Champions League final upset Lukaku enormously – and that's understandable. Lukaku was the man in form and it was obvious even before the game that he would give Pep Guardiola's defenders more trouble than the veteran Bosnian.

Still, Inzaghi has argued that his game plan to subdue City before trying to hit them with a second-half sucker-punch almost worked perfectly. Certainly, had Lukaku taken one of two great chances that came his way after being brought off the bench, Inter would have deservedly forced extra-time.

Furthermore, Inzaghi pushed his employers to sign Lukaku on a permanent basis. He wanted him at San Siro this season, making Lukaku's U-turn look like an ill-advised act of petulance.

15 fun facts about Paul Pogba

Everything you need to know about French superstar Paul Pogba!

Paul Pogba is a French professional football player who currently plays as a central midfielder for Juventus and the France national team. Born on March 15, 1993, in Lagny-sur-Marne, France, Pogba is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, known for a rare mix of technical ability, range of passing, physicality, ball-winning abilities, and creativity on the pitch.

Pogba began his career at the age of six playing for local club US Roissy-en-Brie. He later joined US Torcy, from where the rough diamond was scouted by Le Havre AC. In 2009, Pogba joined Manchester United's youth academy and quickly made a name for himself as a highly-prodigious talent. He made his first-team debut in 2011 but struggled to establish himself in the squad.

In 2012, Pogba left the northern England club after his contract expired, having only made seven appearances as a substitute. He joined Juventus, who only had to pay £800,000 to secure his services.

At Juventus, he became an integral part of the team, completing a wonderful midfield alongside legends Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio. He enjoyed a trophy-laden four-year stint with the Italian giants, helping them win four consecutive Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia twice between 2012 and 2016, as well as reaching the UCL final in 2014/15. Pogba was also named the Serie A Footballer of the Year in 2013 and 2014 and was included in the UEFA Team of the Year in 2015.

His performances were so good that Manchester United — the very same club that released him — forked out a then world-record fee of £89 million to prize him away from Turin in 2018. He was 23 and had been named young player of the tournament at the previous World Cup. He was a rising star, the type of player and leader who was expected to pull United out of their post-Alex Ferguson rut.

It all started so positively for Pogba back at Manchester United. In his first season, he played alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic and helped them win the League Cup and the Europa League, while also moving the Red Devils to a second-place league finish and a return to Champions League action.

However, it all turned sour towards the end of his second stint at United. He has also been criticised for his performances, while some fans and pundits have accused him of not living up to his potential and being inconsistent on and off the pitch.

After another underwhelming season in 2021/22, he left Old Trafford at the end of his contract in the summer of 2022 to rejoin Juventus on a free transfer. He has played just twice for the Italian giants since moving to Turin, with his first season back in Italy largely plagued by various injury problems.

For France, he was one of the driving forces of France's 2018 World Cup win, playing a crucial role in the midfield alongside N'Golo Kante. He was once again a key player for France at Euro 2020 and has made 91 appearances for France, scoring 11 goals but he missed the 2022 World Cup through injury.

Here are 15 fun facts about Pogba you need to know!

Nicknamed 'Paul the Octopus' 🌐 🐙

When he played in Italy first time around, Paul got a nickname ‘Il Polpo’ which translates to 'Paul the Octopus'. This is because he has a lanky frame and long legs to control the ball and keep it in possession. His strides and legs are as powerful as an octopus' tentacles.

Paul Pogba has spoken extensively about how much he looks up to and has learned from Andrea Pirlo, an Italy and Juventus legend. Pirlo and Pogba played together during his first stint at Juventus, where Pirlo was an experienced midfielder and Pogba was a rising star. Pogba has often mentioned Pirlo as one of his idols, praising him for his exceptional passing ability, vision, and composure on the ball.

The 30-year-old has even tried to adopt some of the principles of Pirlo's playing style, including his long-range passing and ability to control the tempo of the game. Pogba has also credited Pirlo for helping him become a better player and develop his skills as a midfielder.

In an interview, Pogba said, "I learned a lot from Pirlo. He was an example for me, not just as a player but as a person too. I watched him all the time in training and in matches, trying to learn from him."

Raised by a single 'super mum'

Often referred to as 'super mum', Yeo Moriba is recognised for making a number of sacrifices for her children as she raised her three sons single-handedly after she divorced from her husband Fassou Antoine Pogba, in 1996. Yeo brought her three boys alone on France's little council house, and was the driving force behind her three sons' footballing careers.

Pogba has in the past admitted that his mother is his greatest source of inspiration. During an interview with Esquire in 2017, the Frenchman said his mother is his first girlfriend.

Yeo holds a passion for the sport as well, and now serves as an ambassador with the Guinea FA. She even founded a football club in Guinea and used to be the captain of the Guinea women's national team.

Vince's class and Ervine's grit lift Hampshire

Hampshire’s coach Dale Benkenstein had been scathing about Hampshire’s inadequate display in the field on the second day. He would have been happier with the response

ScorecardJames Vince could soon be adding Test honours to his England limited-overs caps•Getty ImagesHampshire’s coach Dale Benkenstein had been scathing about Hampshire’s inadequate display in the field on the second day at Headingley. He would have been happier with the response. The polish of James Vince, an England Test-batsman-in-waiting whose time feels nigh, and an innings of defiance by Sean Ervine as he feared the worst about a hand injury provided two hundreds that left pride well and truly restored.Vince has an excellent chance of a Test debut against Sri Lanka at Lord’s. Ervine’s immediate future is less clear-cut. He was struck on the same index finger that caused a two-month absence last season and, fearing what may lie in wait, he will delay an x-ray until he returns to see a specialist in Southampton. When Yorkshire’s scoreboard flashed up birthday greetings before the start of play to Jason Gillespie, the coach, and Dickie Bird, the former Test umpire turned cult follower, there had been an assumption that they would make substantial progress towards a first Championship win by the close of the third day.Gillespie lauds Vince

Yorkshire’s coach Jason Gillespie added his voice to those presenting James Vince as worthy of a Test call-up. “He is a quality player. I thought his driving and the way he left the ball was very good. He is a proper player, no doubt about that.
“Hampshire played wonderfully well today. I thought Vince was excellent. I thought the way Sean Ervine gutsed it out after copping one on the hand – you could tell the way he took his hand off the bat that he was in pain – was real credit to him.
“Our efforts were outstanding. I am proud of the lads – they put in a real shift. It just didn’t quite go our way today.”

Instead, they had to commit themselves to a day of unrelenting toil as Hampshire lost only three wickets all day. “Nivver,” Bird would have exclaimed if offered this forecast at start of play. But the Leeds skies were a strange colour identified by older spectators as blue, the pitch lost energy and Vince and Ervine logged hundreds which were impressive for different reasons. After a hard-fought day, the follow-on had been averted, and Hampshire’s deficit had been trimmed to 143 with two wickets remaining.Benkenstein has signalled that loan signings are in the offing to cover for injuries in the seam-bowling ranks, but Hampshire had felt his criticism all the same. “I can’t really accept what we dished up with the ball,” he had said. “That performance out there in the field is not good enough. We can’t expect a miracle like we produced last year in the last four games.”His captain was the first to respond. There is a classiness about Vince that turns many of his admirers into zealots. He did the hardest work on the second evening, 76 to his name by stumps, and reached 119 before he misread a big inswinger from Steve Patterson and, struck high on the back pad, was adjudged lbw on the leave. The national selector James Whitaker had the expression of a man feeling short-changed as he zeroed in on the nearest camera to study a replay, but there seemed little cause to curse the decision, only the absence of stroke. With Nick Compton not nailing down the No. 3 England batting spot in South Africa and a space vacated at No. 5 by James Taylor’s career-ending heart condition, there are places to be had – middle-order places if Joe Root steps up to first-wicket down. Vince is the uncapped Test batsman with the biggest well of support. Benkenstein termed him “international class”, many have come to that view and there is a gathering suspicion that England feel it is the right time to find out. After Monday’s horror show, though, when Yorkshire’s relentless marauders, Jonny Bairstow and Liam Plunkett needed only 27 overs to add 228 for the seventh wicket, Benkenstein was even more in need of something doughty. He found it in a flinty hundred for Ervine, five-and-a-half hours of resistance after the Zimbabwean had been struck on the bottom hand by Plunkett.Ervine, on 20, needed prolonged treatment and painkillers and upon the resumption was thoroughly tested on the short ball by Plunkett, the most hostile phase of the day, with a couple of balls popping perilously close to short leg (the captain, Andrew Gale, stationing himself there, at a suitable distance) and Ervine withdrawing his hand instinctively from another short delivery.A cover drive against Patterson offered his first release and the threat waned sooner than expected. The second new ball, taken at 233 for 6, proved to be no panacea, Adil Rashid’s legspin was also repelled comfortably, and Ervine found himself acquitting himself more ably than he might have imagined in successive stands of 62 with Adam Wheater – eventually chipped out at midwicket by Patterson – and 59 with Ryan McLaren. It is tempting to link the way this pitch has died by referencing the new toss regulations which have undoubtedly made pitches flatter over the first two weeks of the season. But it is not unusual for Headingley to go flat when the skies clear; it is just unusual for the skies to clear. The forecast is for the fine weather to persist. David Willey, rested out of this match after his England exploits, has not been badly served by a delayed debut. One old stager, though, still managed to nip in for a record. It was Ryan Sidebottom who finally ended Ervine’s innings, a catch for wicketkeeper Bairstow which brought up Sidebottom’s 1,000th wicket across all formats. A landmark that he did not overly celebrate, either because he is not that sort of man, it is not that sort of record, or it was not that sort of day. All three probably. “It probably just shows he’s getting old,” said Gillespie.
