A tough game against a Norwich side who have beaten Manchester City awaits on Saturday, where the in-form Teemu Pukki will surely be a threat, so Roy Hodgson has his work cut out to bounce back from the draw that felt like a defeat.

Let’s take a look at the XI Hodgson should put out against the Canaries…

Some bold changes here, but this is the XI that the former England manager must put out against Daniel Farke’s side.

This is a Palace side who are struggling to create chances and also failing to take them when they do arise – as The Athletic expertly details.

As a result, more ingenuity is needed in possession when the Eagles are at home – with that in mind, we think a first Premier League start for summer signing Victor Camarasa is due, as well as a return to the XI for Max Meyer.

David Ornstein revealed in the summer that Hodgson planned to use Camarasa – who scored five goals for Cardiff last term – in a wide area, so we’ve gone with the Spaniard out wide and Germany international Meyer in the middle.

The only other significant change that we’ve gone for is the removal of Patrick van Aanholt from the XI – we recently detailed how poor he has been under Hodgson from a defensive aspect.

Due to Meyer and Camarasa coming into midfield, Jeffrey Schlupp should drop deeper into left-back in place of the Dutchman, allowing the two creative players to take the game to Norwich and look to create more chances than has been typical of Palace.

What’s the latest?

The Reds are believed to have sent scouts over to Spain to watch the 20-year-old in action, after he caught the eye having become a first-team regular last season.

He has maintained his place in the side at the start of the current campaign, too, and so far the winger has one goal in three La Liga games, adding to the five goals and two assists he got from 26 league matches in 2018/19.

Adrian was the only senior player to arrive at Anfield over the summer, leaving Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri as the club’s only experienced back-up options in the forward positions.

That could suggest that Jurgen Klopp is eager to add Chukwueze to the squad, but will first cast an eye over his performances to determine whether he will an effective addition.

Perhaps too early

Whilst the winger has done well to break into Villarreal’s side at an early age, his inconsistent performances – as highlighted by his goals and assists record – suggests he is not yet the finished article.

As a result, if he was to join Liverpool in the next transfer window he may struggle to make an impact, and certainly wouldn’t trouble players like Mo Salah or Sadio Mane for a first-team place.

If he found game time limited it could affect his development and it would therefore be a risk to bring him in now.

Instead, the Reds should bide their time, keep tabs on him as they have so far, and if he develops into a more productive and consistent player they could then make a move for him.

Mane, Salah and Roberto Firmino arrived at Anfield when they were aged 24, 25 and 23 respectively, and have begun to hit their best form at the age of 26/27, which suggests the young Nigerian should be granted more time to develop given he is only 20 years of age.

Lots of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after the reason for signing Fabinho was revealed by The Athletic.

The article by James Pearce states that the Reds signed the Brazil international over Chelsea’s Jorginho and Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira because of his physical prowess.

Liverpool had tracked the defensive midfielder’s progress since the 2012/13 campaign when Fabinho was on loan at Real Madrid from Portuguese outfit Rio Ave, so they have clearly done their research on the player.

The Merseysiders finally got their man last summer when they parted with £39m to bring the 25-year-old to Anfield from Monaco, and it has proved to be an inspired swoop.

Fabinho has helped the club win the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup since signing, and it feels like the Brazilian is getting better with every passing game under Jurgen Klopp.

Borna Barisic has saved his Rangers career after impressing Steven Gerrard and his backroom staff with his attitude and performances throughout pre-season, according to a report by Football Insider.

The Croatia international was believed to be an individual that could have been offloaded this summer, with  Soccer Link having linked him with a possible move to French outfit Dijon recently.

However, it seems Gerrard is prepared to give the left-back another chance at staking a claim for first-team football at Ibrox in the upcoming campaign by making him their first choice.

Barisic has had an up-and-down 12 months at Rangers since completing a £2.2million move from NK Osijek last summer (Sky Sports).

The 26-year-old has suffered a couple of injuries that have meant he has missed out on a lot of football, whilst a knock he sustained on international duty appeared to incur the wrath of Gerrard.

The manager was furious to lose Barisic before their Old Firm clash with Celtic and believed the player should have returned as quickly as possible (Evening Times), something the defender has since admitted there had been a misunderstanding that had been resolved (Scottish Sun).

Despite those knocks, and the fact that he played just once in their last five games (Transfermarkt), he still managed to prove rather lethal going forward as he provided six assists in his 23 appearances and continued that fine form this season in their first-leg win against Gibraltarian outfit St Joseph’s when he contributed a further two more.

It should only be considered a positive for Rangers that Barisic appears to be working hard off the pitch to show Gerrard as to why he should be at the club for the upcoming campaign.

The 26-year-old would have shown glimpses in his limited appearances last season of what he can provide the team in terms of going forward, whilst he is also the only recognised left-back in the squad at the current moment in time (Transfermarkt).

Adapting to a new style of football in a different country can be hard and can sometimes take more than a year to get to grips with. However, Barisic certainly has the opportunity to show why Rangers spent £2.2m on him last summer.

After an impressive campaign on loan at Charlton that ended in a man-of-the-match display in the League One play-off final to earn the Addicks promotion, Krystian Bielik’s stock has never been higher.

The 21-year-old then proceeded to turn in some monumental displays at the U21 European Championships, netting in Poland’s opening two group stage games against Belgium and Italy.

However, after admitting in recent weeks that he would not entertain the prospect of returning to Arsenal’s youth sides, The Sun now claim Bielik is ready to leave the Emirates this summer in search of first-team football.

After hearing the latest update on their talented prospect, Gunners fans took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at seeing one of the side’s promising young players leave again.

Some fans of the north London side compared Bielik’s situation to Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry and warned the club that they could once again regret making a similar decision.

Indeed, a few felt aggrieved that under-performing first-team players like Mohamed Elneny remained at the club whilst someone of Bielik’s potential was seemingly being allowed to go.

Aston Villa have done some particularly shrewd work in exploiting the loan market in the past year.

Signing Axel Tuanzebe and Anwar El Ghazi on loan last season, Dean Smith also added Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause to his squad on a temporary basis over the winter.

But they’re once again targeting another loan deal. Per The Guardian, they have an interest in Chelsea teenager Ethan Ampadu.

The Welshman was rarely afforded much game time last season, featuring just three times in the Europa League as he had to settle for a solitary start.

It was a disappointing campaign for the defensive-minded player but he could be set for a new lease of life on loan at the Villans.

On the chalkboard

Despite being the tender age of just 18, Ampadu is someone who plays like an individual beyond his years. He’s intelligent on the ball and calm in possession, boasting a pass success of 87.9%.

Yet, it’s his defensive contribution that can benefit Villa most next season if he joins.

Whether that be as a centre back or as a holding midfield player, two roles he’s featured in for the Blues, his reading of the game is exceptional and his ability to step out and intercept the play is impressive for someone so young.

In the Europa League he made 1.7 interceptions per game in 2018/19 whilst for Wales in the Nations League, that went up to 2.7 per match, completing eight interceptions in three outings.

If you compare that to the current Villa squad then his record at international level is streets ahead of anyone else in the side.

Mile Jedinak was top of their charts making 1.7, but he’s now been released. However, in terms of those who started regularly, Mings had the best stats with 1.2 interceptions on average per 90 minutes.

If Villa are looking for someone who can offer more protection then Ampadu could prove to be game-changing.

Despite still being incredibly inexperienced, his ability to break up the play could be crucial for a newly promoted team who quite possibly won’t see as much of the ball next term.

Having lost Jedinak and Glenn Whelan, you sense as though Villa will need to find someone capable of doing a similar job to make up for their departures. Ampadu could well be their answer.

Obviously, Manchester City really were thoroughly impressive this season, weren’t they? Yes, they again failed to win the Champions League but they were utterly dominant domestically. History-making stuff, in fact. Indeed, they became the first team in the history of the Premier League to win the domestic treble and did so in emphatic fashion. 

Yet, there’s one thing that one can guarantee – City will not rest on what they have. They will continue to spend and continue to improve. Just look at last season. They won the league and subsequently spent £60m on Riyad Mahrez (as per BBC Sport). So, what changes will they make this summer?

Well, a rumour that has started to circulate is the potential £50m incoming of Juventus right-back Joao Cancelo (as per The Sun). The Portuguese defender has only been at Juventus for one season, but impressed immensely during this period. He’s quick, attacking and can play both as a defender and a winger. The Sun state Guardiola believes Cancelo could provide genuine competition for a place in the starting eleven, with Danilo potentially on the way out.

But what does that mean for current starter Kyle Walker? Well, let’s have a look at the season just gone. Walker started 33 games, losing three and conceding 17 goals. Now, let’s be honest, these are hardly bad figures. Yet, he both scored and assisted just the one. While this won’t concern Guardiola, perhaps his tendency to make a damning mistake or two might.

Now, there’s no suggestion here that Walker isn’t up to the required standard, the opposite in fact. He must be regarded as one of the best right-backs in world football. But one can understand the interest in Cancelo. At 29-years-old, Walker is slowly becoming a senior member in the squad. With speed being the essential component to his game, something that will begin to decline in coming years, it does seem the right time to start bedding in his eventual replacement.

Analysing how Walker responded to competition from Kieran Trippier at Tottenham, it doesn’t look too good. Similarly to Guardiola’s sides, Pochettino placed a lot of importance on full-backs and regularly rotated his options.

It’s well documented that Walker and Pochettino fell out (per the Independent at the time) over fitness concerns and the rotation policy. While Walker will indeed be confident in his position at the club, a £50m incoming may just be a concern for the England international who arguably wasn’t at his best this season.
