Reputation at stake for Sri Lanka

Preview for the second Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Colombo

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando15-Mar-2013Match factsMarch 16-20, 2013
Start time 1000 local (0430 GMT)Tamim Iqbal is fit and should return to the top•Bangladesh Cricket BoardBig PictureThough the teams were almost even in the bland, high-scoring draw in Galle, they arrive in Colombo with vastly different perspectives on the first Test. Sri Lanka will feel they can take almost nothing from the match apart from meaningless runs, boosted batting averages and tired bowlers. Bangladesh meanwhile have been overjoyed at the application and skill of their batsmen, as well as the strong assertion in Galle, that they are an improving Test side.It follows that the challenge for each team at the Premadasa Stadium is also dissimilar. The visiting batsmen will seek to ride the momentum from the first Test, and reiterate the mastery over the Sri Lankan attack that saw them to their highest Test total. Their bowling might have been fodder for the hosts, but in constructing big innings in long, secure passages of play, the Bangladesh batsmen showed they are capable of closing the gap between the teams, and will be desperate to prove the draw was as much a result of their own aptitude as the lifeless surface.Sri Lanka however, will not only be chasing a win, they will be after an emphatic one. A 2-0 victory was what was expected when Bangladesh arrived, and while Angelo Mathews has explained the draw away by labeling the wicket “absolutely a road”, the pitch in Colombo seems set to favour bowlers, at least early on, and Mathews will want to reassert Sri Lanka’s dominance and avoid an embarrassing scoreline in his first series as captain.Where Sri Lanka will hope to outgun Bangladesh is, strangely, in the pace ranks. Fast bowling has long been Sri Lanka’s worst cricketing suit, but they will expect Nuwan Kulasekara and Shaminda Eranga can pose a greater threat to the Bangladesh batsmen than the spin bowlers can, while the batsmen will not be daunted by Abul Hasan and Shahadat Hossain. There is peril in that strategy though, as Sri Lanka’s top order has been prone to collapse against high-quality fast bowling in the past 12 months. Their tour of Australia was littered by meek capitulations, and even in the home series that preceded that tour, Sri Lanka’s batsmen fell prey to the pace and movement of Tim Southee and Trent Boult with alarming regularity. They are now also missing Thilan Samaraweera at No.5, who has in the past been their saviour on such occasions. The Premadasa pitch may be unlikely to allow another encouraging draw for Bangladesh, but if they can get the best of the seam-bowling conditions and put the hosts under pressure with tight, disciplined spells, they will give themselves a chance of causing an upset.Form guide (Most recent results first)Sri Lanka: DLLLL
Bangladesh: DLLLLIn the spotlightShaminda Eranga has been identified as a promising long-term prospect for Sri Lanka, who may lead the attack in future years. So far however, he has been steady, rather than brilliant, at Test level. He can bowl at around 145 kph, but does not bowl that fast consistently. He is also able to move the ball, but only slightly. He would do well to bolster his swing and improve his consistency under Chaminda Vaas, who specialised in both, and a good outing on a helpful pitch could provide a crucial confidence boost.Fans who have followed Mohammad Ashraful’s career in all its fits and frustrations will have been staggered at the amount of care and responsibility he displayed during his 190 in Galle. There was barely a stroke in that knock that did not seem well-considered, while the pace of the innings was also entirely appropriate to the match situation. Mushfiqur Rahim heaped praise on him at the end of the match for helping him through his own innings, and in Colombo, Ashraful will be keen to show his prudent new avatar was not a one-match wonder.Team newsAjantha Mendis is in danger of being dropped, and though the young offspinner Tharindu Kaushal is in the team as spin-bowling cover, Mendis’ place will more likely go to one of the fast bowlers, if the track is as lively as it is expected to be. Chanaka Welegedara would ordinarily be the first seam bowler picked in the attack, but a string of injuries in the past year have left him struggling for rhythm. Suranga Lakmal is the other option for the hosts.Sri Lanka (probable): 1. Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2. Dimuth Karunaratne, 3. Kumar Sangakkara, 4. Lahiru Thirimanne, 5. Angelo Mathews (capt), 6. Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 7. Kithuruwan Vithanage, 8. Nuwan Kulasekara, 9. Rangana Herath, 10. Shaminda Eranga, 11. Chanaka Welegedara/Suranga LakmalA fully fit Tamim Iqbal is expected to return for the visitors, and Anamul Haque most likely to make make way for the left-hander. Since the Premadasa pitch is expected to favour the seamers, Robiul Islam could come in as the extra seamer. Left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak could, however, be included because he offers control. Rubel Hossain has also been declared fit, and is likely to replace Shahadat Hossain.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Jahurul Islam, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Mominul Haque, 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Sohag Gazi, 9 Abul Hasan, 10 Abdur Razzak/Robiul Islam, 11 Rubel HossainStats and trivia After two matches, fast bowler Abul Hasan has a batting average of 136 and a bowling average of 270. Kumar Sangakkara has scored 669 runs in his last four innings against Bangladesh. Bangladesh have never drawn a Test seriesQuotes”You have to have competition in the team, whether for the youngsters or the seniors. Among the batsmen it has been very good.”
.”The biggest challenge for us is to follow up a drawn Test match with another very good performance. But I am confident we can correct the small mistakes we made in the field in Galle.”

Poor shot selection cost us – Kohli

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli has said his side erred in its shot selection in a low-scoring chase against Deccan Chargers on Sunday. Royal Challengers’ defeat in Hyderabad allowed Chennai Super Kings to hang on to the fourth spot at the end of the league stage and qualify for the playoffs. After dismissing Chargers for 132, Royal Challengers lost wickets at regular intervals, Dale Steyn finishing with figures of 4-0-8-3. Kohli said Steyn’s spell cost his team the match. “He bowled amazingly well,” Kohli said. “He’s one player that you must be cautious against. We needed to target the other bowlers but I don’t think we played the right kind of shots. On that wicket we could have played ourselves in before taking chances at the end.”We have been batting brilliantly through the tournament but today people were getting beaten on straight balls; balls that they would usually smash out of the ground. Things didn’t go right for us as far as batting is concerned but I think we bowled well and fielded well. We played good cricket for 70 percent of the game.”After the dismissal of Chris Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kohli and Saurabh Tiwary kept Royal Challengers in the hunt with a brisk stand of 46, which came at 7.45 runs an over. But Kohli’s dismissal in the 16th over led to a lower-order collapse. “My wicket changed the face of the match, we were easily poised and at that stage needed 30 from 25 balls. We made mistakes today and could have played better cricket shots,” Kohli said.”When a team has nothing to lose they play freely and they bowled in good areas today. I don’t think the wicket was that bad to bat on, it was a bit two-paced but if you played yourself in then you could hit some big shots. Apart from me and Saurabh (Tiwary ) we didn’t get any partnerships. We need small partnerships in T20 when you’re chasing a small score and that didn’t happen for us today.”Kohli said despite Gayle falling in the third over, Royal Challengers should have chased the target easily. “He’s been a big, impact player for us but (after his dismissal) the other players should have stepped up today, which didn’t happen. We should have made better decisions while batting.”You can’t smash every over in T20, you must analyse and stretch the game till the end, we needed partnerships and when I got out we needed 30 from 25 which was gettable. It was always up to the batsmen in the middle to analyse what was going on.”Despite failing to make the playoffs, Kohli said the side learnt a lot from the high-quality cricket played in the IPL this year. “Unfortunately we are out because of net run-rate but I don’t think we’ve played bad cricket at all,” he said. “It feels very bad (failing to qualify for playoffs) but as a tournament the IPL has been brilliant this year, I think six-seven teams were on 16-17 points each. It’s been really competitive and it’s good the more competitive it gets, as it brings out more quality from the players.”

Estádio cheio, a comunicação fica difícil.

Rhinos prevail in high-scoring encounter

Mid West Rhinos took a close game against Mashonaland Eagles by seven runs, defending 184. After being put in, Rhinos were given a solid start by their openers Brendan Taylor and Riki Wessels: the pair put on 111 in 13.5 overs before Wessels fell for 51. Taylor fell soon after for 54, but Gary Ballance built on the start with a rapid knock of 53 off 25 that included five sixes. Rhinos finished with 184 for 2, and Eagles launched a solid reply through Stuart Matsikenyeri. The opener hit 73 off 55 before falling to Michael Chinouya. He was backed up by Peter Trego, who slammed 71 not out of 49, but the run out of Ryan ten Doeschate for six in the final over just about secured the match for Rhinos.Mountaineers registered their third win in four games, beating Southern Rocks by 43 runs to move to the top of the Stanbic Bank 20 points table. The win was fashioned by a team performance. After being put into bat, Mountaineers put on 166 for 6, as six of their eight batsmen got into double figures. Opener Phil Mustard was their top scorer, with 40, but the fire power was provided by Kudzai Sauramba – he slammed 36 not out off 15 balls to carry the side past 150. Southern Rocks’ reply was mainly driven by a quick half-century from Shane Burger, but he fell for 62 to Dirk Nannes. There was not much of a challenge raised from the other, as Southern Rocks managed only 123 for 6 in their 20 overs. Shingi Masakadza was the pick of the Mountaineers’ bowlers, taking three wickets in a miserly spell.

Cooley wants Johnson 'up and firing'

Australia’s acting head coach, Troy Cooley, hopes the conditions in South Africa will help Mitchell Johnson regain his best form after a disappointing year. Cooley will be in charge for Australia’s upcoming trip to South Africa after being named as the temporary replacement for Tim Nielsen, who stepped down after the Test series win in Sri Lanka.During that trip, Johnson continued to struggle, collecting just two wickets in each of the three Test matches, on his first Test tour working with the new bowling coach Craig McDermott. It capped off a below-par 12 months for Johnson, who since the start of the short tour of India in October last year has taken 29 Test wickets at 38.89.Cooley watched the Sri Lankan series from Australia and said that Johnson looked consistent but he needed to keep working on his wrist position. The upcoming series will be crucial for Johnson, who faces competition from Ryan Harris, Trent Copeland and Peter Siddle for a place in the side, not only in South Africa but for the home Tests against New Zealand and India. In Johnson’s favour is his strong record in South Africa, where in 2009 he picked up 16 wickets at 25, and he was especially venomous in the Johannesburg Test. Australia’s two Tests in November will be played at Newlands in Cape Town and the Wanderers in Johannesburg, where Johnson was Man of the Match last time he played there.”I think the conditions definitely suit the quick bowlers over there and the places we’re going to play will definitely give them an advantage,” Cooley said. “It will be up to all of us now to pull together and make sure that not only Mitch but the rest of the team are up and firing and building on what we’ve started in Sri Lanka.”Mitch has been working closely with Craig McDermott now for a little while. We have a relationship with Mitch over the years and we’ve seen some ups and downs along the way but fully aware Mitchell is still responsible to go out there and perform.”From what I saw on TV he looked like he was bowling consistently. He probably needs to make sure things are working out of his wrist as best as they can. I’m sure Craig McDermott has been working on that and I’ll pick up with Craig on that as soon as I hit the deck on Monday.”Cooley has spent most of the past five years working closely with Australia’s attack as the team’s bowling coach, but he stepped away earlier this year to become head coach at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane. His appointment as Australia’s interim coach came after he told Cricket Australia he wouldn’t be applying for the full-time role.Instead, he is happy working with the developing players at the Centre of Excellence and taking on roles such as coaching Australia A, which he did on the tour of Zimbabwe in July. On that trip, the offspinner Nathan Lyon did enough to impress the selectors and earn himself a Test debut in Sri Lanka, and Cooley said Lyon was good enough to succeed in South Africa as well.”Nathan is relatively new in the team but he acquitted himself very well in Zimbabwe and obviously started his career with the Australian team quite nicely,” Cooley said. “It’s a tough area to bowl finger spin over there [in South Africa], it’s a little bit like the Australian conditions, but he’s got some great control and has grown with every game so I see him acquitting himself quite nicely if selected.”Cooley will rejoin the Australians at a time of great change, but also of great promise, after their 1-0 series win over Sri Lanka. Tackling South Africa in their own conditions will be a different challenge, but despite being ranked second on the ICC Test table, South Africa have not won a Test series at home since beating Bangladesh in 2008.”South Africa are always a formidable line-up,” Cooley said. “They’ve got a great bowling line-up and their batsmen, even though they’re a little bit older, they’re still producing the runs. They sit well above us on the Test table and we’ll be working very hard to chase them down.”

Batting remains Zimbabwe's biggest weakness

Zimbabwe’s coach Alan Butcher thinks this World Cup had probably come four years too early for this group of players

Alan Butcher gave an assessment of his side the day before the game against Pakistan. The English coach of Zimbabwe – a nice symmetry to that, with England’s coach being from Zimbabwe – appears to have an intensely straight-talking side to him. He thought this World Cup had probably come four years too early for this group of players. He was asked today, after a seven-wicket loss to Pakistan, his side’s fourth in five group games, whether his side had given a good account of themselves in this tournament. Slowly, deliberately, he came to the stark conclusion that they hadn’t. The honesty should do Zimbabwe more good than harm. The humour will be needed as well. Asked how embarrassing his side’s collapse of ten for 72 against Sri Lanka was, he replied, “Embarrassing, but not as embarrassing as 9-29.”There is something to Butcher’s assessment that this is one World Cup too soon. Clearly there is workable material within the Zimbabwe side. They may not, as he also acknowledged, become world-beaters on the level of Australia or South Africa. But they can become a side that will come to be taken with some seriousness by the opposition. The batting is a problem currently. In four out of five matches, their top has toppled to such an extent that the game has been all but over in the first 15 overs. Against Pakistan they were down to 43 for 4 within 13 overs. Batting long does not come naturally yet. “We fielded well and bowled superbly, but that can’t be said about our batting,” Elton Chigumbura, the captain whose birthday it was, said. “We have to work on it because that has been the big problem through the tournament. Besides the batting part, we’ve put up a big fight. My biggest concern is on the batting in the first 15 overs, especially against stronger teams. We have to really work on that when we get home.”The decision to bat first itself seemed a strange one. Zimbabwe have talked up their bowling through the tournament though its lack of wicket-taking incisiveness would suggest otherwise. They went nearly 80 overs against New Zealand and Sri Lanka without taking a wicket. Here, under heavy cloud with showers around, and a nervy Pakistan batting line-up susceptible to precisely such circumstances, here was a sliver of a chance. Chigumbura chose instead to make first use of the surface because, he said, it seemed a good pitch and other sides had batted first on it and flourished.Stoppages for rain didn’t help Zimbabwe, especially the one that ultimately curtailed their innings just when the last Powerplay had begun. “We lost momentum with the rain stopping and playing again,” Chigumbura said. “The way we approached the innings was to go out in our last four overs but we didn’t get that. That’s cricket.”But ultimately, the batting just wasn’t good enough. “Unfortunately [the story is] pretty much the same as the game before and the game before that,” Butcher conceded. “Everybody in the dressing room, particularly the batters, are very unhappy about the way things are. None of our players are trying to give their wickets away, they are all working hard and trying to improve but things are not going their way going well for 80% of our batting unit.”That happens sometimes in any team, the only thing we can do is to keep practicing, try identifying areas players need to improve and devise ways for that to happen. There’s no magic formula. We have to keep going. You can tell by the way we fielded and the way spinners battled against the conditions, gripping the ball, there is no lack of spirit in the side. We just have to keep working.”The focus may now switch to Chigumbura’s captaincy. He doesn’t believe it has particularly affected his form, but he’s only made 58 runs in five games in the tournament. “I haven’t performed the way I wanted, but maybe it’s one of those times when you just go out of form. Unfortunately it came when I was the captain but obviously I am working hard to get into form but at the end of the day it is not my decision, it’ the board’s.”
