Nasir, seamers trip up Zimbabweans

ScorecardThe Zimbabweans’ woes continued on their tour to Bangladesh, as they were convincingly beaten by the BCB XI in a warm-up game before five-match ODI series that begins on Friday. The Zimbabweans chose to bowl in the 13-per-side game, and their bowlers enjoyed some early success, reducing the hosts to 51 for 3 in the 15th over. However a half-century stand was put on by Shamsur Rahman and Sabbir Rahman for the fourth wicket to make sure the team didn’t slump. They fell in quick succession, Shamsur for 49, before a 94-run sixth-wicket partnership at 6.55 between Shuvagata Hom and Nasir Hossain set them on their way to a very competitive 282. While part-time seamer Vusi Sibanda got the most wickets – four – he was expensive like many of his team-mates; only new-ball bowler Neville Madziva and legspinner Tafadzwa Kamungozi went at under a run a ball. The Zimbabweans had a promising start in the chase with 40 for the first wicket by Brendan Taylor and Regis Chakabva, and 77 for the third between Sikandar Raza and Timycen Maruma, but a slide followed and the team never recovered. They lost six wickets for 36 runs, going from 132 for 2 to 168 for 8. The BCB XI bowlers shared the wickets around, with, somewhat surprisingly, the seamers being more among the wickets than the spinners. The Zimbabweans were eventually bowled out for 194 in the 46th over.

'I was definitely not calm' – Engelbrecht

Cape Cobras allrounder Sybrand Engelbrecht admitted he had a hard time staying calm while bowling a Super Over against Barbados Tridents even as he aimed at getting the pace and length right. Engelbrecht, a late addition to the Cobras squad, played a key role in the side’s Super Over win against Tridents that kept them alive in the Champions League.Chasing 175, Cobras needed 32 off the last three overs and Englebrecht’s 10-ball 19 helped the side tie the game. After Cobras made 11 for 0 batting first in the Super Over, Engelbrecht was entrusted with defending the target and his slow offbreaks ensured a win for the side.”As much as I tried to be nice and calm in the middle, it was just not possible to be that way during the Super Over,” Engelbrecht told . “Maybe the Lasith Malingas of the world can be calm under those situations but I was definitely not calm since it was my first Super Over.”I am not sure what the thought process was behind handing me the ball for the Super Over. I was just told that I will be bowling the Super Over and from there on I tried to make my plans. All the senior players were supportive and gave me a lot of advice when I was out to bowl the Super Over. They helped me out to be nice and calm which was great. When I walked out to bowl, I realised that it was very crucial to get the pace and the length right to defend that total in an over.”Engelbrecht was brought into the squad as a replacement for JP Duminy, who did not travel with the team for the Champions League due to a knee injury. Engelbrecht joined the squad after their first game against Northern Districts in Raipur. The allrounder was the side’s most successful bowler in their loss to Hobart Hurricanes, taking 3 for 20, and he added to his tally with two wickets against Tridents. Engelbrecht said he had been working on his skills of bowling under pressure during training.”I think it is important to try and put yourself under pressure when you train. That is something that I have definitely tried to learn over the last couple of months,” he said. “The idea is not to just bowl, but bowl with a plan and bowl under pressure. I think that aspect of bowling has been really good to me so far and hopefully it continues in the games to follow.”

Klinger ton drives South Australia

Michael Klinger was at the forefront of a strong batting performance from South Australia in Adelaide, and his unbeaten century was supported by fifties from Sam Raphael and Tom Cooper

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Feb-2014
ScorecardMichael Klinger was at the forefront of a strong batting performance from South Australia in Adelaide, and his unbeaten century was supported by fifties from Sam Raphael and Tom Cooper. The hosts denied Victoria’s specialist bowlers a wicket all day, and the only breakthroughs were made by part-time offspinner Glenn Maxwell.Klinger and Raphael batted 50 overs after South Australia won the toss, adding 121 for the first wicket. Maxwell was the seventh bowler Victoria captain Matthew Wade introduced and he struck in his first over, having Raphael caught by Cameron White for 61. In the 54th over, Maxwell and White combined again to dismiss Travis Head for 4.Having lost two wickets for seven runs, South Australia were steadied by Klinger and Cooper, and they added 145 runs in 38.1 overs. Klinger’s 115 came at a strike rate of just under 42, while Cooper scored 80 at a strike rate of 64.

Vinay ton leaves Punjab battling for survival

Vinay Kumar’s maiden century took Karnataka’s lead beyond 300 and left Punjab battling to avoid defeat

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy in Hubli16-Dec-2013
Scorecard
File photo: Vinay Kumar struck his maiden first-class century•AFPIn the morning, Punjab had watched him score an unbeaten 105 against their tiring attack and extend Karnataka’s lead to 331. Deep in the final session, just when they hoped they could see out the day with a pair of set batsmen at the crease, Vinay Kumar returned to uproot Taruwar Kohli’s off stump. The fifth-wicket partnership between Taruwar and Gurkeerat Singh had only been the second in both Punjab innings to last over 100 balls. In the morning, Vinay had spent 148 balls in the company of last man HS Sharath before declaring Karnataka’s innings at 505 for 9.Gurkeerat played a few defiant strokes late in the day – a square cut off Vinay, and drives for four either side of cover off successive deliveries from Stuart Binny – to stay unbeaten on 56 but Punjab remained deep in trouble, five down and 175 behind.Karnataka’s first wicket came from a brilliant bit of fielding in the sixth over. Manan Vohra cut HS Sharath hard and faultlessly, from the coaching manual’s perspective. He had got on top of the bounce and the ball was inches from the ground when Ganesh Satish – crouched close to the bat at an unorthodox short point – got his right hand under it.Satish was the catcher again, three overs later, when an effort ball from Abhimanyu Mithun found Uday Kaul late on a pull. Kaul was less than halfway into his stroke when the ball hit him high on the bat and popped to short leg. Punjab were 21 for 2 after 8.1 overs.Mandeep Singh had watched a number of his team-mates throw their wickets away in Punjab’s first innings as he finished unbeaten on 32. Now, it was his turn to play an injudicious stroke. On 12, he chased a full, wide ball and edged Mithun to wicketkeeper CM Gautam, who held on after a juggle.Punjab went to tea 68 for 3, with opener Jiwanjot Singh on 32. Jiwanjot, who was coming off a double-century against Vidarbha, had looked entirely at ease, and had struck six fours, including two effortless flicks off Mithun in one over. Perhaps he, Punjab must have thought, could bat them out of this hole.He couldn’t. Jiwanjot hadn’t added any runs to his score when Mithun, running in to start the fourth over after tea, got one to jag back and trap him LBW.The pitch still looked good to bat on. Left-arm spinner KP Appanna got one to bounce extra and had a caught-behind appeal turned down off Taruwar, and Gurkeerat pulled his bat out of the way as Sharath got one to lift off the seam, but such moments were rare, and both batsmen looked largely untroubled before Vinay struck late in the day.Vinay, on 29 overnight, had started the day full of aggressive strokes, a particular highlight being a backfoot punch in front of point off Sandeep Sharma the ball after he’d brought up his half-century. After Mithun’s dismissal, Appanna batted in the same manner before he was out for a 46-ball 45.After that, Punjab spread their fields against Vinay, often stationing six men on the rope for him. Vinay kept refusing singles early in the over, even though last man HS Sharath didn’t look troubled when he did get the strike, and even though Karnataka’s lead had ballooned beyond 300.It went on in this manner till Vinay flicked a single to deep square leg off VRV Singh to reach his maiden first-class century. His previous best had been 61. Lunch, and the declaration, came a few minutes later. The respite for Punjab didn’t.

Ten Doeschate happy with wider role at Otago

The ability to play more games and shoulder more responsibility played a key role in Ryan ten Doeschate’s decision to join Otago Volts

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Sep-2013Ryan ten Doeschate, the Otago Volts and Netherlands allrounder, has said that the chance to play more games and shoulder greater responsibility played a key role in his decision to join the New Zealand domestic T20 side.”When I joined the Volts I knew that I’ll play 10 games, bat up the order and get to shoulder more responsibilities,” ten Doeschate told the CLT20 website. “Here, I will have to take more onus and I like that idea because that’s the kind of role teams give to their key players. “Ten Doeschate played a decisive hand in Otago’s victory over Kandurata Maroons, first picking up 2 for 9 in his two overs, and then scoring 64 off 32 balls to help guide Otago to a six-wicket win. While playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, ten Doeschate realised the level of competition for spots among the foreign players. “It is very different, mindset more than anything else,” he said. “But you’ve got to accept that you are not playing games for certain reasons, and in all the big teams it is difficult to even get a handful of games. That was one thing that was very appealing to me when I went to New Zealand last year.Ten Doeschate was due to play for Essex in the current English county cricket season, but with Ravi Bopara deemed available again, he was allowed to join Otago for the Champions League campaign. “I love coming to India and have been looking forward to this competition. It was only at the last moment that I was told I wasn’t required at Essex and that I could come here and join the Otago Volts, which was great news.”Hopefully, we can win the main draw of the competition but this (qualifying in the Group stage) in itself is a wonderful achievement for the guys. New Zealand is one of the smaller cricket nations in the world, and a place in the main draw is very well admired and deserved.”During the HRV Cup, this year, ten Doeschate finished second on the runs-scorer list with 401 runs in 10 innings at an average of 50.12, but insisted it was the performance of the team as a whole which made the difference. “I might have got the most runs in the HRV Cup, but there are guys who contributed throughout the tournament. I believe that’s why we have been so good in the last 12 months or so.”He also had praise for his captain Brendon McCullum. “Brendon is a seasoned international cricketer and I think it would be foolish to suggest anything else other than he is the guy we look at to carry our hopes. But again, everyone has to chip in and sometimes, a 25 not-out is just as crucial as a 70 or an 80.”For instance, Hamish Rutherford is a fantastic talent and someone who is consistently scoring 20-30 runs now. Yes, there are match-winners in every team and it’s nice to have a few guys who we can turn to for big performances. They give us a good chance in the main draw.”Otago next face Sunrisers Hyderabad on September 20 in a dead-rubber as both sides have already qualified for the group stage.

Trinidad and Tobago win six games in a row

A round-up of Regional Super50 matches played on April 7, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-2013Trinidad and Tobago made it six wins out of six, beating Barbados by 41 runs in Port of Spain. After choosing to bat, they were in trouble at 5 for 3 but captain Denesh Ramdin and Jason Mohammed put together a match-winning stand. Ramdin struck 134 at better than a run a ball, with 12 fours and four sixes, and Mohammed played a steady hand of 63. The pair added 170 and helped take the score to 264 for 8. Seamer Marlon Richards struck early for T&T in the chase and he was supported by the rest of the bowling contingent, as Barbados lost wickets at frequent intervals. Though many of their batsmen got starts, only one, Jonathan Carter, went on to score a half-century. Shannon Gabriel, Rayad Emrit, and Yannick Cariah bagged two wickets each, as Barbados were bowled out for 223.Leeward Islands slipped to their fifth defeat, losing to Windward Islands by 36 runs in a low-scoring game in Antigua. Windwards chose to bat and though Leewards struck regularly, the middle order, led by a half-century from captain Liam Sebastien, took their team to 194 for 9. Jacques Taylor took four wickets but his effort was in vain. Six of Leewards’ batsmen reached double-figures but no one stuck around long enough to guide the chase. Shane Shillingford, who had an excellent home Test series against Zimbabwe, grabbed his best returns in List A cricket, taking 6 for 32, and restricting Leewards to just 158 for 9.Jamaica will meet Windward Islands in the semi-final after they beat Guyana by two wickets in a rain-affected match in Guyana. Electing to bat, Guyana could not put up a challenging score as David Bernard (4 for 24) and Nkrumah Bonner (3 for 23) struck regularly. Guuyana then lost four wickets within 15 runs and managed to score 190 for 9 in 49 overs, as Anthony Bramble and Assad Fudadin top-scored with 31 each. Jamaica’s top five batsmen put together only 55 runs but Carlton Baugh’s 40 and double-digit scores from Nikita Miller and Andrew Richardson for the ninth wicket completed the chase off the last ball.

Sri Lanka’s new Test and ODI captain, Angelo Mathews, has said he aims to arrest the team’s slide in the ICC rankings

Sri Lanka’s new Test and ODI captain, Angelo Mathews, has said he aims to arrest the team’s slide in the ICC rankings, and hoped to count his side among the best in the world in both formats in the next few yearsMathews succeeded Mahela Jayawardene, who stepped down after the tour of Australia, after spending almost two years as vice captain in all formats. Dinesh Chandimal was named his deputy in Tests and ODIs and captain of the Twenty20 team. Sri Lanka have been the top-ranked Twenty20 side in the world since their run to the World Twenty20 final in September, but slipped down the Test and ODI rankings after having been second on both tables in 2009. They have also failed to win a Test series away from home since 2008, and have won only four Tests since Muttiah Muralitharan retired in 2010.”My main ambition now is to see the Sri Lankan cricket team in the top three in the next few years,” Mathews said. “We’ve dropped down to sixth place in Tests and fifth in ODIs. It won’t be easy, and it will take some time. Myself, Chandimal and the selectors will have to work closely to achieve that.”Mathews had been Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 captain since the end of the World Twenty20 in 2012, but the new selection panel, headed by Sanath Jayasuriya, opted to give that position to Chandimal instead. Chandimal has not showed great promise in the Twenty20 format, but Jayasuriya said the selectors split the captaincy in order to help build a young leadership core, as well as to ease Mathews’ burden.”We thought that it would be too much for Angelo to give him the Twenty20 captaincy as well, as we wanted to allow him to concentrate on the Tests and ODIs,” Jayasuriya said. “We thought the best person for the Twenty20 captaincy was Dinesh Chandimal, who has a long future in the game. He will also get some experience of captaining Sri Lanka in case Angelo gets injured.”Mathews’ first assignment as captain will be the two-Test home series against Bangladesh, for which the selectors named a 20-man preliminary squad. The selectors sought to create a break from the past by selecting a young squad for their new captain, but Mathews was grateful for the presence of some senior players, most notably Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan, who have all captained Sri Lanka in the past.”I think you need both experience and youth in a team, because you can’t have XI new players in a match. I think the selectors had that balance in mind when they chose the team, and they’ve done a good job of that.”Of the older players the selectors omitted, Thilan Samaraweera and Prasanna Jayawardene were the most notable exclusions. Jayasuriya was non-committal on whether there was an avenue back into the side for these players, but focused instead on the opportunity to develop fresh talent. He also said the 20-man squad would be whittled down to 15 in the lead up to the first Test.”We need to start giving the youngsters an opportunity, and a series against Bangladesh is a good one to give one or two new players a place,” he said. “Players like Kithuruwan Vithanage and Ashen Silva have been making runs in domestic cricket, and Jeevan Mendis has also scored well recently.”We want to make sure these young cricketers to experience the atmosphere in the Sri Lankan team, and this is a good opportunity to allow that, because it’s a home Test series. They can work with the Sri Lankan team until about 10 days prior to the Test, when we will name the 15-man squad.Chandimal, 23, was impressive in Tests and ODIs, but failed to make himself a regular in either side throughout much of 2012. He acknowledged the added responsibility more leadership would bring, but suggested that his new roles would be a boon to his development, rather than a hindrance.”There’s pressure every time you play a match, but I think the captaincy is a boost for me personally, and a validation of my past performances,” Chandimal said. “I’ve been a captain in Under-19 at school level as well. I didn’t think I would be captain this early in my career, but that’s a source of pride for me.”
