As good as Kuhn: 131-touch Celtic titan proved Rodgers all wrong

Celtic reacted brilliantly to their disappointing Old Firm defeat by bouncing back with a 3-0 win over St Mirren at Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

The Hoops had been beaten 3-0 by Rangers at Ibrox in their previous match and Brendan Rodgers will have demanded an instant response from the group, which is exactly what he got.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

Nicolas Kuhn found the back of the net twice, either side of a header from Auston Trusty, to secure all three points for the league leaders this weekend.

Nicolas Kuhn's performance against St Mirren

The German forward scored two of the team’s three goals in the match and will grab the headlines with his display for that very reason, despite them both coming courtesy of opposition mistakes.

Kuhn and Celtic’s opening goal in the game came from a cross from Daizen Maeda that found the left-footed star in the box, with his effort essentially palmed backward into his own net by Zac Hemming, who should have done better.

His second goal came in the second half after the St Mirren defence and goalkeeper failed to deal with a loose ball in the six-yard box, which allowed the winger to tap into an empty net from close range.

Kuhn, who missed a ‘big chance’, also made two key passes and created one ‘big chance’ for his teammates, but was not rewarded with an assist for his creative efforts on the right flank.

The former Rapid Vienna star was not the only strong performer for Celtic on Sunday, however, as central defender Auston Trusty proved Rodgers’ Old Firm decision all wrong.

Auston Trusty proved Brendan Rodgers wrong

Celtic’s manager opted to go with Liam Scales on the left side of the defence next to Cameron Carter-Vickers in the 3-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox, and it turned out to be a misstep from the boss.

The Irish dud only completed 85% of his attempted passes in the match and was directly at fault for the opening goal from Ianis Hagi, as he smashed a pass into no man’s land in midfield, leading to the Rangers star’s strike from distance.

Trusty, who landed an 8/10 player rating from 67HailHail, stepped back into the defence and produced an excellent all-round display to prove that he should not have been left out of the XI in the Old Firm.

The USA international was key to the dominant performance from Celtic against St Mirren with the most touches (131) in the match and a pass completion rate of 88%, to go along with scoring the second goal.

As you can see in the table above, Trusty’s play on and off the ball was significantly better than what Scales, who had a nightmare in the Old Firm, produced on Thursday.

The American giant did not allow any opposition players to dribble past him and was dominant in his duels, winning 11, to go along with three blocks to prevent Kasper Schmeichel from being worked.

Rodgers may now be regretting his decision to go with the Irishman over the former Sheffield United titan for that match, as the result could have been different if he had gone with the left-footed colossus alongside Carter-Vickers for that game – given his improved play on the ball could have prevented Hagi’s goal.

The Celtic manager should now think twice before deciding to drop Trusty in the club’s next big match, whether that is domestically or in Europe.

Man Utd transfer rumours

Ruben Amorim has yet to make his first marquee signing as Red Devils boss. However, the manager did admit towards the turn of the year that the club would try to do something in the winter window.

“When the window is open, we can try to do something and we will try to do something. But I think, in the next weeks, we are going to have more time to train and we can improve, that’s the only way.

“We had a lot of games without training, now we will have more space to grow. You can see that the context is worse in this moment, as we had a lot of losses, so we have to manage everything.”

When asked on which positions in the squad he’d like to bolster, the boss replied: “I will keep that to myself. But we’ll try to do something.”

A plethora of players have been linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent weeks, including striker Randal Kolo Muani, who now looks set to join Juventus over a move to the Premier League.

Elsewhere, United are said to be eyeing goalkeeper Zion Suzuki once again after he turned down a move to Manchester in 2023 under Erik ten Hag. Talks have been held over a new left-back, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes seemingly a target after working under Amorim at Sporting CP.

There may well be a number of departures in January, too. Marcus Rashford’s future has been a hot topic of conversation, whereas Antony is also being linked with a move away.

Another attacker who has been getting more game time than Rashford and Antony is Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine was linked with the likes of Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona last month, however, he appears to have an agreement with another European side.

Man Utd star Garnacho has agreement in principle to join Napoli

According to reports in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Garnacho has an agreement in principle with Serie A giants Napoli.

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna travelled to meet Garnacho’s entourage this week and that there is now an agreement in principle over a five-year contract at €3m per season which works out at around £12.5m across the duration of the deal.

INEOS want up to €70m (£59m) to sell the winger, whereas Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis won’t go beyond €50m (£42m), so a transfer fee still needs to be agreed.

It could well be a deal to keep an eye on over the coming weeks, but with Garnacho a regular, missing just one game under Amorim, and under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, INEOS appear to hold all the cards at this stage.

Wolves also make move to sign £76,000-p/w forward after Agbadou confirmed

After confirming the arrival of defender Emmanuel Agbadou, Wolverhampton Wanderers have now reportedly set their sights on signing an experienced striker on loan this month.

Wolves transfer news

After failing to sign a central defender in the summer and suffering ever since, Wolves have instantly backed new manager Vitor Pereira by welcoming Agbadou from Ligue 1 side Stade Reims. 27 years old and providing the experience that the Midlands club have lacked at times, Agbadou and the rest of his new teammates will undoubtedly have their focus firmly fixed on Premier League safety.

Speaking to the club website after officially welcoming the Ivory Coast defender, chairman Jeff Shi said: “We’re delighted to welcome Emmanuel to the club. He’s a player our recruitment team have watched for a long time and Vitor agreed that he was the right player and the right character to strengthen our squad now.

“It was important we completed the transfer early in the window to help Vitor straight away, and, like all transfers, this one took a lot of hard work from a lot of people. I hope Emmanuel has a successful career at Wolves, and he’ll have the full support of everyone during his time here.”

Agbadou may not be the last player to be welcomed with open arms at the Molineux this month, however, with the Midlands club instantly setting their sights on a reinforcement at the opposite end of Pereira’s side.

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Wolves have now opened preliminary talks to sign Kelechi Iheanacho on loan from Sevilla, who will allow the Nigerian to leave for the rest of the season this month.

Kelechi Iheanacho warming up for Leicester City.

The former Leicester City striker – earning a reported £76,000-a-week – has struggled in La Liga, but could now receive the opportunity to rediscover his best form in a league he knows incredibly well all whilst keeping Wolves afloat in England’s top flight.

"Talented" Iheanacho can be Cunha fail-safe

Signing Iheanacho – an experienced striker who knows all about the Premier League – would certainly be an intelligent move by all involved at Wolves and not just for that knowhow. The Nigerian could also act as a fail-safe for Matheus Cunha’s potential decision to depart as early as the January transfer window.

Whilst the Brazilian’s exit seems unlikely at this stage amid Arsenal’s reported interest, Wolves would be wise to prepare for the worst and welcome a player who could go on and cover for the goals that they’d so desperately miss.

When at his best, Iheanacho is more than capable of stealing the headlines, having earned Brendan Rodgers’ praise for doing exactly that in 2021.

The former Leicester City boss told reporters as relayed by The Independent: “He’s a talented player and I think of the difference in him tonight than when we played Crystal Palace last time. When we played them around the Christmas period, he wasn’t playing so much, and when you are a striker in particular that rhythm of games is important.”

Better than Rice: 8/10 Arsenal star just showed he could save KSE millions

Well, it wasn’t the most enthralling of football games last night, but Arsenal got the job done in the end.

Mikel Arteta’s side knew that a win against Dinamo Zagreb would all but guarantee them passage into the Champions League round of 16, and played out a comfortable 3-0 win.

There were several impressive displays from the hosts, such as Jorginho, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Martin Odegaard, who finally found the back of the net.

However, two stood out above the rest: Declan Rice and another starter, who showed that he could save the Kroenkes a lot of money this month.

Declan Rice's game vs Zagreb

The last few weeks have seen Rice getting back to something close to his best of last season, and last night was one of his best displays of the campaign.

It took less than two minutes for the Englishman to open the scoring for the hosts, leathering the ball on the half-volley as if he were a world-class centre-forward.

Now, he should have added a second in the second half, but that doesn’t take away from how effective he was as the left-eight in both his attacking and defensive responsibilities.

It’s not just us who were left seriously impressed by the former West Ham United captain either, as football.london’s Tom Canton gave him an 8/10 match rating at full-time, writing that it was yet “another dominant midfield display” from the midfield machine.

Unsurprisingly, the 26-year-old’s statistics from the game more than back up the praise, as in 93 minutes, he produced a combined expected goal and assist figure of 0.82, took 62 touches, maintained a passing accuracy of 91%, played one key pass, took four shots, won 100% of his ground duels, made one clearance, blocked two shots and made two tackles to boot.

In all, it was a brilliant performance from the Gunners’ £105m man, but he wasn’t the only regular who grabbed the headlines, as Kai Havertz put in a display that could end up saving the club millions.

Kai Havertz's game vs Zagreb

Yes, the player in question is Havertz, who, after a few terrible weeks in which his place in the team was seriously questioned, put in another strong performance at the Emirates last night.

The German international did make his few, now customary, mistakes in the box, like holding onto the ball too long at times, but overall, he showed that he could be the man to lead the line for the North Londoners this season.

For example, the “magnificent” striker, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, was the one who stopped the ball and cushioned it just right for Rice to open the scoring in the first two minutes, but he wasn’t done there.

In the second half, when the team needed to extend their lead, the 25-year-old dynamo rose to meet an exquisite pass from Gabriel Martinelli and did just that, helping to quell any nerves that might have been slowly creeping in due to Saturday’s game.

Unsurprisingly, Canton was just as impressed with the former Chelsea man, awarding him another 8/10 on the night and writing that he ‘perfectly controlled’ the ball for the team’s opener.

Now, should this be the start of a goalscoring run from the Aachen-born forward, then the powers that be at the club might opt not to sign a new striker this month and instead invest elsewhere in the team, but whether that would be a wise decision is a debate for another time.

Ultimately, it wasn’t a swashbuckling display from Arsenal, but a comfortable and professional one that saw them come out as deserved winners, hopefully with some momentum heading into the rest of the season.

INEOS given unanimous backing in "transformational" Man Utd stadium update

Turning their attention away from troubles on the pitch, INEOS have reportedly received unanimous backing in what has been described as a “transfomational” Manchester United stadium update.

INEOS given green light

When Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS first arrived with the likes of Dan Ashworth in tow, there was more optimism than there had been for a long time at Manchester United. The influence of the Glazers had been weakened and INEOS arrived fresh full of ideas, new transfer strategies and the funds to awaken England’s biggest tiring giant threatening to sleep.

Amazing Hojlund upgrade: £58m "monster" now wants to sign for Man Utd

Manchester United are looking to bring in this new attacker before the transfer window closes.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 28, 2025

Almost a year on from the news of their partial takeover, however, and to say that INEOS haven’t exactly been making positive strides would be an understatement. Funding has been cut in a number of areas outside of the matchday squad, including reportedly to the Manchester United Foundation whilst ticket prices have continued to rise.

Meanwhile, on the pitch, those increased ticket prices have not proven worthwhile with Ruben Amorim’s side sat a world away from European qualification and on the end of countless results to forget. But, just as a positive is needed more than ever, Ratcliffe has received some good news.

As relayed by Mike Keegan of The Daily Mail, INEOS have now been given unanimous backing in their plan to build a new Old Trafford from the local authority. Officials at Trafford council unanimously backed the plans which will create a new 100,000-seater stadium.

Dubbed “transformational” by the council, INEOS will now begin their search for a consultant team in an attempt to bring their plan to life and play their part in regenerating the area. It is also believed that the new project will add £7.3bn to the economy and provide over 90,000 jobs and 15,0000 more homes in what should only be seen as something to celebrate for the first time this season.

New Old Trafford a key step for Man Utd

Leaving their failure on the pitch to one side for a moment, Manchester United have been playing at a historic ground which is gradually becoming a decaying antique whilst the likes of Everton and Tottenham Hotspur move on into impressive, modern stadiums. With Old Trafford leaking at the same rate as Amorim’s backline, INEOS had to put plans together to solve at least one problem and it seems as though a New Old Trafford has taken precedent.

Speaking about the proposed plan, Councillor Liz Patel, executive member for economy and regeneration at Trafford council, said: “I am delighted these plans have been approved by the council executive. As the report says, this is one of the most significant opportunities for urban renewal in Trafford and the results will be great for the area and the surrounding region.

“This is a hugely exciting project and working with our partners and private developers, we will be looking to create thousands of new homes, new neighbourhoods, and a world-class setting for the Manchester United stadium.”

Liverpool now shortlist "fantastic" £45k-p/w star as Trent replacement

Liverpool have now shortlisted a “fantastic” right-back who plays for a fellow top English club as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to a report.

Alexander Arnold's uncertain future

There has been some positive news on the contract front in the past few days, with various rumours suggesting Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have now signed new deals to extend their stay on Merseyside beyond the end of the season.

It remains to be seen whether those reports are true, but there is a feeling the Reds may find it easier to keep hold of Van Dijk and Salah, rather than Alexander-Arnold, despite the right-back’s long-standing affiliation with the club.

Former scout Mick Brown has recently suggested a move to Real Madrid is still the most likely outcome this summer, saying: “I think, at the moment, the odds are in favour of him going to Real Madrid. They’ve been talking about a potential move for a while now and it’s definitely an option.

“From what I hear, he’s leaning towards that move because players find it notoriously difficult to turn down Real Madrid when they come calling.”

Liverpool'sTrentAlexander-Arnoldapplauds fans after the match

As such, it is important Arne Slot identifies potential replacements for the defender, and he is now eyeing a player who is currently at a rival Premier League club.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool have now shortlisted Chelsea’s Malo Gusto as a replacement for Trent, although they are still trying to convince the England international to sign a new deal. Gusto has recently changed agents, which often suggests a move could be in the offing, and the timing is intriguing given the situation surrounding Alexander-Arnold.

ByDominic Lund Feb 5, 2025

The Chelsea ace is said to tick a lot of boxes for Slot, but it may take a big offer to tempt Chelsea, as he is contracted until 2030 with no release clause, which places the Blues in a strong negotiating position.

Gusto could be the ideal Trent heir

The hope will be that Trent commits to a new deal over the next few months, but at the moment it looks like the 26-year-old is heading for the exit. As such, it is good news that Liverpool are being proactive by looking for replacements, and Gusto could be an ideal heir, given his skill-set.

The Reds’ current right-back is well-known for his attacking contributions, and the Frenchman is also impressive going forward, ranking in the 83rd percentile for assists per 90 over the past year. Enzo Maresca has also praised the £45k-per-week youngster for his ability to play further forward this season.

Gusto could be a superb signing for Liverpool, but Chelsea may be unwilling to sell to a rival club, which could be a major stumbling block.

Leeds have struck gold on a sensation who’s now a £25m star in the making

Leeds United’s late show against Sunderland on Monday night handed Daniel Farke’s side a huge step towards ending their stint in the Championship come the end of the season.

The victory over their promotion rivals moved them seven points clear of third place, with just 13 games to go, extending their unbeaten run in the league to 15 in the process.

Pascal Struijk’s two efforts off the bench demonstrated the importance of substitutes for the Whites this campaign, with every player, whether it be a starter or an impact player having a say in their ambitions of returning to the Premier League.

It’s safe to say the disappointment of last season’s play-off final defeat is firmly in the rearview mirror, potentially going one better in securing automatic promotion given the current buffer they’ve built in recent weeks.

However, the fact Farke has been able to do so after numerous key departures over the summer has made the German’s job at Elland Road all the more impressive.

Crysencio Summerville’s stats at Leeds in 2023/24

After relegation to the second tier in 2022/23, winger Crysencio Summerville was handed a crucial role in the first team to try and secure Leeds an immediate return to the top flight.

He’d previously been an impact player in the Premier League the season prior but cemented his place as a key performer for Farke in his debut campaign at the helm.

The Dutchman would register 20 goals and nine assists in his 46 league outings, producing countless moments of magic and subsequently claiming the Championship Player of the Year award.

However, after such a successful stint, coupled with the failure to claim promotion, Summerville would depart to join West Ham United last summer in a deal worth £25m.

Losing such a talented player was always going to be a blow for the supporters, but it appears that the club have done a superb job in landing a replacement for the youngster – aiding their chances of returning to the top flight this year.

The Leeds star who’s now a £25m star in the making

Players like Summerville don’t come around very often possessing a skill set that not many talents are capable of replicating – making any replacement have a huge task on their hands.

However, Manor Solomon arrived on loan from Tottenham over the summer, with supporters not knowing what to expect after his lack of impact in North London.

Regardless of the expectations placed on his shoulders, it’s safe to say the Israeli international has exceeded beyond anyone’s imagination, registering seven goals and seven assists in his 26 Championship games to date.

The 25-year-old has popped up at key moments for Farke, including the 2-0 win over Norwich City, in which he registered a goal and an assist, playing a vital role in the triumph against the manager’s former side.

Despite his lack of impact in previous seasons, he was labelled as a similar player to Summerville in 2022/23 by FBref, matching or bettering the Dutchman in numerous key areas.

Solomon, who’s previously been dubbed a “monster” by one analyst, matched the former Whites fan-favourite for goals, whilst also posting a higher shot-on-target rate – showcasing his clinical edge in attacking areas.

He also completed more take-ons per 90, subsequently achieving a higher success rate, evidently a better dribbler than Summerville – something which has aided his efforts in the final third this season.

Whilst he’s only on loan in Yorkshire this campaign, supporters will be hoping that, regardless of which division they will be playing in next year, Solomon joins the club on a permanent basis.

Should he do so, the Israeli could well be the club’s next big-money sale, following in the footsteps of Summerville – having a huge impact on the first-team, whilst also pocketing a pretty penny in the process.

Boost for Emery: "Fantastic" Aston Villa star "close" to return from injury

A “fantastic” Aston Villa player is now “close” to returning from an injury setback, in what could be a boost for manager Unai Emery.

Villa's injury struggles

Speaking ahead of tonight’s fixture against Liverpool in the Premier League, Emery has admitted he doesn’t know the reason behind Villa’s injury problems this season, having been forced to substitute a player in the first half of each of his side’s last five matches.

Emery said: “It’s difficult to know exactly the reason for the injured players. Normally, a lot of teams have a lot of injuries. Maybe some teams do not, like tomorrow in Liverpool.

“We are playing a lot of matches, which adds more risk to players. Kamara was ready to play (against Ipswich) but had some problems in his back.

“But the injury is not coming from his back, it is in his hamstrings. We are meeting with doctors, physios to see how we can get better at anticipating the circumstances like we had. But exactly why is difficult to have this information.”

A number of key players have been sidelined in recent weeks, with Matty Cash, Pau Torres, Amadou Onana, Ross Barkley, Leon Bailey and Ezri Konsa all spending time on the treatment table.

However, Emery has now revealed Bailey is “close” to overcoming a calf injury and being available for selection, with the manager hinting he could be involved tonight against Liverpool.

The winger is said to be a “doubt”, alongside Cash and Konsa, who also returned to training yesterday morning, but the manager was coy on whether the trio would have any involvement against the league leaders.

"Fantastic" Bailey returning to form

The Jamaica international was a vital player for Villa last season, being lauded as “fantastic” by Emery, while also amassing ten goals and nine assists in the Premier League en-route to his side achieving qualification for the Champions League.

This season, the 27-year-old hasn’t quite had the same impact, but he had started to show some more promising signs prior to his recent injury setback, scoring in the 2-1 victory against Leicester City and creating two big chances against Celtic.

After just one win in their last five Premier League games, it could be a difficult task for the Villans to qualify for Europe once again, and there are some tricky games on the horizon.

As such, Emery will need his best players available if his side are going to mount a European push and remain competitive in the Champions League, so it is good news some key players are set to return, but Bailey needs to start chiming in with some more goals and assists.

Aston Villa plotting summer swoop to sign "agile" star who pocketed Rogers

Setting their sights on summer reinforcements, Aston Villa are now reportedly plotting a move to sign a Ligue 1 midfielder who recently kept Morgan Rogers quiet in the Champions League.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have been among the toughest sides to predict in the Premier League this season. Whilst at times they’ve looked untouchable, recent defeats against the likes of Crystal Palace exposed a side to Unai Emery’s team which has reared its head far too often in recent months. And as they battle for Champions League qualification for the second season on the bounce, it’s the type of consistency that those in the Midlands can’t afford.

That said, the Villans did at least return to winning ways last time out by comfortably seeing off Cardiff City courtesy of Marco Asensio’s second brace of strikes since completing a January loan move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Following the success of Asensio on loan from Ligue 1, it looks as though the Villans could be about to make a return to France’s top flight in search of another reinforcement.

According to The Boot Room, Aston Villa are now plotting a summer swoop to sign Lamine Camara, who recently stifled Rogers in a 1-0 victory for AS Monaco against the Midlands club in the Premier League.

Limiting the Manchester City graduate to just 0.25 expected goals, 0.13 expected assists and just two successful dribbles, Camara certainly passed what could have been his Aston Villa audition.

Lamine Camara for Aston Villa.

Completing eight recoveries on that night, the Monaco star is exactly the type of tireless midfielder Aston Villa arguably lacked up against the likes of Adam Wharton in their 4-1 defeat at Selhurst Park, making him one to watch this summer.

"Agile" Camara is a rising star

As part of a Monaco side which defeated both Barcelona and Aston Villa in the Champions League this season, Camara is undeniably a rising star and could soon find himself pushing John McGinn all the way for a place in Emery’s strongest side, should the Villans come callng this summer.

Dubbed “agile” and “tireless” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 21-year-old could be an ideal partner for the more technical Youri Tielemans.

Crucially, Camara would also add further midfield depth at Villa Park. With the added responsibilty of Champions League football this season, Emery’s side have gradually seen their top four ambitions fizzle out, which injuries to the likes of Amadou Onana have far from helped.

Having learned a harsh lesson over the importance of squad depth, Aston Villa should add Camara to their summer wishlist in the coming months.

Tottenham Hotspur have decided to sanction an exit this summer, with chairman Daniel Levy and co anticipating a bidding war for the player’s services.

Tottenham are also open to selling Richarlison this summer, following a season ravaged by injury, with the Brazilian failing to make his mark under Postecoglou as a result. Everton are also rumoured to be weighing up a swoop for their former striker this summer, and Levy is prepared to sell Richarlison for around £40 million (GiveMeSport).

Even Spurs captain Son Heung-min has been linked with an exit at the end of this season, despite the club recently electing to extend the winger’s deal by an additional 12 months, so Postecoglou’s side could look very different by the start of 2025/2026.

Amid his excellent loan spell at Leeds United, questions will be asked about the future of winger Manor Solomon.

The Israeli international joined Tottenham on a free transfer in 2023, but his debut campaign at N17 was overshadowed by long-term injuries. Levy gave the green-light for Solomon to join Leeds on a temporary deal, and he hasn’t looked back since.

Tottenham set to green-light Manor Solomon transfer as bidding war looms

As per GiveMeSport, Leeds won’t be the only contenders for his services. Indeed, it is claimed Everton and Southampton are also expressing an interest in the winger, with Levy anticipating a bidding war for Solomon’s signature at Tottenham. His price tag is currently set at £15 million, but Spurs are confident they could demand even more, especially considering the growing clamour for Solomon’s services this summer.

Tottenham are prepared to sanction the ex-Fulham star’s exit as a result, with the north Londoners set to make a pure profit off his potential sale as well.

“I know Manor Solomon from the Premier League. From Fulham, Tottenham, and now he has moved to Leeds,” said Man City superstar Kevin De Bruyne. “He has the qualities to play at this level. He is an excellent player.”

Meanwhile, ex-Leeds boss Neil Redfearn is convinced he’s far beyond English second tier level: “He’s got a quality that is better than this level, you can obviously see that.”
