Rodgers had his next Sterling & Coutinho at Celtic, then he left goalless

They say never go back, but Brendan Rodgers has eased any concerns amid what has been another dominant spell in charge at Celtic, having claimed the domestic double in 2023/24.

That first campaign back at Parkhead wasn’t perfect for the Northern Irishman, with the Hoops crashing out of the League Cup to Kilmarnock, although triumphs in the Premiership and the Scottish Cup ensured that the club’s Old Firm superiority continued, following the days of Ange Postecoglou.

Excluding his time south of the border – where he claimed the FA Cup and Community Shield at Leicester City – the experienced coach has now chalked up nine domestic trophies in Glasgow, with the early signs this season suggesting that haul could well be bolstered, amid a seven-game winning running in the league.

Brendan Rodgers

Excitement will also be brewing among the fanbase at the promising youngsters who are part of the current crop at Celtic Park – namely 21-year-old Arne Engels and 22-year-old Paulo Bernardo – with Rodgers, for the most part, having proven himself to be particularly adept at nurturing young talent.

Brendan Rodgers' development of young talent

In truth, the former Liverpool boss has never been afraid to throw youngsters in at the deep end, with his first stint in Scotland notably seeing him snap up a 19-year-old Moussa Dembele for a compensation fee of only £500k. The Frenchman would later be sold for £20m.

Equally, Rodgers was also pivotal in the development of academy sensation, Kieran Tierney, with the homegrown full-back making 127 appearances under the one-time Swansea City coach, after previously making his debut under Ronny Deila.

Like with the example of Dembele, Tierney would later go on to secure the Bhoys a handsome profit amid his £25m switch to Arsenal in 2019, having credited Rodgers for helping him “become a much better player and professional”.

That knack for nurturing rising stars was also the case during Rodgers’ stint at Anfield, having handed a regular role to a 17-year-old Raheem Sterling, while also prising Philippe Coutinho from Inter Milan at the age of 20 – two players who would later rake in £49m and £142m, respectively, for the Merseysiders.

Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho

For all those success stories, there were, however, the odd occasion were the Carnlough native made a mistake in the market, having been proven wrong after snapping up what he believed to be his next Sterling or Coutinho while at Celtic.

Rodgers' next Sterling & Coutinho at Celtic

Amid his first season at the helm back in 2016, Rodgers did notably acquire the likes of Dembele – alongside other significant names such as Scott Sinclair – although there was particular excitement regarding the addition of another up and comer midway through the campaign.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

That man was Ivorian starlet, Kouassi Eboue, with the promising midfielder arriving from Krasnador in January 2017 for a reported fee of around £3m.

Described as a ‘Champions League signing’ by BBC Sport’s Tom English at the time – who pointed out Rodgers’ success with the likes of Coutinho and Dembele etc – Kouassi was also lauded by his new manager:

Kouassi Eboue

“He is one of those young players I look at with the same feeling I had as when I saw a young Coutinho or a young Sterling. Within 10 seconds you see his talent.

‘He is one, obviously, the scouting team have been aware of. Most coaches see something in a player that suits their way of working. But there are certain attributes in a young player you can see and you get a good feeling. This boy has that.”

High praise indeed for a player who had made just 19 senior appearances during his time in Russia prior to that, although it’s fair to say he never lived up to those lofty expectations.

Kouassi Eboue's time at Celtic

From the get go it looked like it could be a tricky time in Scottish football for the then 19-year-old, with the teenager enduring a shaky first start against Partick Thistle in April 2017.

Speaking after that full league debut, Rodgers even joked that “after the first five minutes I thought we had signed his brother”, albeit while going on to admit that Eboue had “grew into the game” before being replaced on the hour mark.

The defensive midfielder ultimately ended that first six months at the club with just five appearances to his name, before going on to make just 12 outings in all competitions in the following season. His 2018/19 campaign was also cruelly cut short due to an ACL injury.

Scott Brown in action for Celtic during the 2016/2017 campaign.

Despite struggling to oust skipper Scott Brown in the centre of the park – alongside those injury woes – Rodgers believed that his rough diamond would “certainly fulfil that role” when Brown eventually moved on. In the end, it was Eboue who departed first.

After racking up just 22 appearances in total in three years – a record that yielded no goals and only a solitary assist – the 6 foot 1 asset was then shipped on loan to Belgian side Genk in January 2020, prior to eventually joining the club permanently later that summer.

Now 26, the former Celtic man is on the books at Portuguese outfit Arouca – whom he joined in 2023 – with his transfer value deemed to be around just £900k, as per Transfermarkt.

Perhaps he was merely doomed to fail from the start amid such notable comparisons to the likes of Sterling and Coutinho, although it’s fair to say that Eboue does not fall into the category of transfer success stories that Rodgers has enjoyed during his two stints at Parkhead.

Chelsea hold discussions over £50m+ star who has outscored Nicolas Jackson

Chelsea have identified another new potential signing as they look to add more firepower to Enzo Maresca’s ranks in the upcoming transfer windows, it has been reported.

Chelsea seeking Nicolas Jackson alternative despite top form

Nicolas Jackon endured a tricky first season in Chelsea colours after arriving from Villarreal, but has improved drastically in the early stages of the 24/25 Premier League campaign.

The Senegal international found the net against Liverpool to take his tally of goals up to five for the season already, while he has already grabbed three assists, averaging a goal contribution every 78 minutes, only just below Erling Haaland’s 72 minutes.

Nicolas Jackson scores for Chelsea

However, there is the sense that Chelsea want to add another option to their frontline despite recently offering Jackson a new and improved contract, and the Blues were strongly linked with a move for Nigerian marksman Victor Osimhen over the summer window.

A move eventually broke down for the Napoli man, and former Blues boss Antonio Conte refused to re-integrate him into the Italian side, which meant that he was shipped off to Turkish side Galatasaray on loan, where he has scored three times in four games.

Not just Sanchez: Maresca must drop 5/10 Chelsea ace who lost 100% duels

The Chelsea man was given an opportunity to impress and did not grasp his chance.

ByDan Emery Oct 21, 2024

The Blues remain in contact over a potential January move, but they are also looking at other potential options, with Osimhen likely to be a very expensive addition who would demand to be a regular starter and the Blues only just recovering from a similar deal to sign Romelu Lukaku from fellow Serie A side Inter, which ended in disaster. Now, they have identified a different option.

Red hot goalscorer on Chelsea's radar

That is according to TEAMtalk, who report that Chelsea are holding discussions over a potential deal to sign Egyptian marksman Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Linked to West Ham over the most recent summer transfer window, Marmoush clearly took that personally and has enjoyed a phemonenal start to the season in the Bundesliga, grabbing nine goals and four assists in just seven German top flight outings, and contributing a goal or assist roughly every 45 minutes, even faster than Haaland’s return.

This has attracted plenty of attention, with the report highlighting interest from Liverpool, Arsenal and others. In Chelsea’s case, “there have been discussions to understand the possibilities of a deal”, and it is the Blues who “hold the most serious interest in snapping him up” in 2025.

He would be cheaper than Osimhen, though not by much. Under contract in Frankfurt until 2027, the German side will “accept no lower than £50m (€60m / $65m) for their talisman”, a fee that is only likely to rise should his performances continue in the same vein.

The 25-year-old would add some extra firepower to Chelsea’s attack, who at present can only call upon Jackson, João Félix or Christopher Nkunku to lead the line, a trio bought for a measly £125m.

However, with his impressive goalscoring record, he could leave that trio behind him should he be able to translate his form in Germany to the Premier League.

Arsenal willing to pay £50m to sign Bournemouth star who terrorised White

After watching him get the better of Ben White in their shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth, Arsenal are now reportedly willing to pay as much as £50m to sign one Premier League star.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners entered the Vitality Stadium fresh from the international break and seemingly ready to leapfrog both Manchester City and Liverpool before they play their respective games. But to say that things didn’t exactly go to plan would be an understatement.

Arsenal now want to sign highly rated gem who's had Premier League trial

He’s one for the future…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 19, 2024

Starting with William Saliba’s red card, Arsenal’s fortunes only went down from there with Bournemouth going on to score the opening goal courtesy of Ryan Christie and then sealing the points courtesy of Justin Kluivert’s penalty from the bench.

Now left hoping for Liverpool and Manchester City to slip up, Arsenal have reportedly turned their attention back towards the transfer market in the meantime as they look to perfect Mikel Arteta’s side.

According to reports in Spain, Arsenal are now willing to pay £50m to sign Antoine Semenyo in 2025 after the winger terrorised White during Bournemouth’s surprise win over the Gunners.

Semenyo was at his electric best and completed two of his three dribbles and managed to get off six shots at David Raya’s goal. Up against one of the best right-backs that the Premier League has to offer in White, the Bournemouth star proved that he belongs among English football’s elite.

Those at the Emirates aren’t the only ones interested, however, with North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur as well as Newcastle United also willing to pay big money to sign the winger in a busy battle for his signature. When 2025 arrives, it may well be a case of can’t beat him, sign him for Arsenal.

"Intelligent" Semenyo soon ready for big move

Whilst it’s important that players do not rush into a big move, it’s becoming clear that Semenyo is on the verge of stepping up to the level required to complete such a switch. The Bournemouth star has been a clear standout on the South Coast, with three goals in seven Premier League games representing his recent rise at the Vitality.

Those around English football are beginning to take note of that form too. Analyst Ben Mattinson even described Semenyo as “very intelligent” earlier this year before he kicked on even further in the current campaign.

In regards to what Arsenal need, Semenyo may tick the box. When assessing Arteta’s side, Raheem Sterling on loan appears to be a stop-gap before they potentially sign permanent competition for Bukayo Saka in the form of a player who’s just got the better of White. As his form continues, Semenyo will remain one to watch ahead of 2025.

However, since then, concerns have surrounded the form of Gabriel Jesus. The former Man City star only just got off the mark with his first goal of the season in all competitions against Preston North End in midweek, and that kind of return really isn’t good enough for a forward on a reported £265,000-per-week.

This has resulted in reports that Jesus is facing an uncertain future at Arsenal, while the Gunners are believed to be looking at alternatives in the transfer market who can ease the pressure on Havertz’s shoulders.

Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic is a rumoured top target for Arteta, among others, with Arsenal also considering a move for Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran.

Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins

The Colombia international has found a new lease of life at Villa Park after being heavily linked with a summer exit – scoring eight goals in 14 appearances across all competitions – and Unai Emery’s side ultimately rewarded Duran with a bumper new contract.

Arsenal are prepared to bid for Duran regardless, according to some media sources, but the forward will be far harder to prise away from the Midlands than in the summer window.

Some reports believe that Duran could cost nearly £100 million, so Edu and the recruitment team may need to come close to Arsenal’s transfer record if they’re to strike a deal for the South American starlet.

Patrick Vieira urges Arsenal to sign Jhon Duran

In comments relayed by Football 365, Vieira has urged Arsenal to sign Duran – calling him the right number nine for Arteta whilst hailing the 20-year-old’s speed, in-game intelligence and overall ethic as a team player.

“I loved his performance against Bayern Munich,” Vieira said.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

“He’s the right player for Arsenal – quick, unselfish, solid in the air, technically skilled, and intelligent in his movement. The question is whether Arsenal can reach their goals with a genuine goalscorer or a false No.9.

“Havertz has performed well since the season’s start and has the potential to fill that role. But as Manchester City have shown, having a pure striker like Haaland makes winning games easier.”

Ipswich have found a "remarkable" star who is now rivalling Saka & Palmer

The international break arguably came at the worst possible time for Ipswich Town, as the Tractor Boys picked up their first win of the Premier League campaign away at Tottenham Hotspur before the pause for top-flight action then commenced.

The fixtures don’t get any easier, as Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United travel to Portman Road next, but Kieran McKenna’s men will be hoping they collect another scalp when the Red Devils make that long journey down to Suffolk.

McKenna will know he needs all of his troops performing at their best to pull off another shock victory, with a number of his players standing out with fearless displays in that 2-1 win away at Spurs.

Best Ipswich performers at Spurs

The obvious place to start here is highlighting the Ipswich goalscorers on the day, as Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap shared the strikes in North London.

Szmodics’ strike would have sent the Ipswich away end into raptures after he acrobatically fired home an overhead kick, whilst Delap was in the right place at the right time to extend the lead shortly after to pick up his sixth goal of the Premier League campaign already.

No doubt Delap would love to make it seven for the season when Man United come to town, having been on the books of Manchester City as a youngster.

Omari Hutchinson will also want to back up a sublime showing at Spurs with another top display versus the Red Devils, as the ex-Chelsea attacking midfielder was lively throughout with five successful dribbles alongside a mightily impressive 12 duels being won.

There was one more excellent performer in that victory and he’s now beginning to rival some of the best in the Premier League.

The Ipswich star who is rivalling Cole Palmer

Away from the attackers at McKenna’s disposal, Leif Davis was also an energetic presence playing out from the back, with the ex-Leeds United prodigy taking to the top division well so far and proving he deserves to be playing week in week out next to some elite opponents.

Davis had garnered a reputation for being a top-drawer EFL performer before Ipswich’s insane rise up to the very pinnacle of English football, having been an assist king during his side’s automatic promotion heroics.

Last campaign, the slick 24-year-old would tally up a stunning 21 assists from 43 second-tier contests, on top of scoring two strikes, with that creative spark not absent from his game whatsoever making the huge leap up a league.

Davis netted the sumptuous first-time volley above against Leicester City at the start of the month, which was his first goal for McKenna’s men in the top division. He also has two assists to show for his efforts.

Labelled as a “remarkable” player by football pundit Jobi McAnuff for his ability to notch up so many assists from defence, his key pass numbers for the relegation-threatened outfit so far this campaign also make for some captivating reading.

1. Andreas Pereira

Fulham

2. Dejan Kulusevski

Tottenham

28

3. Cole Palmer

Chelsea

24

4. Leif Davis

Ipswich

24

5. Dwight McNeil

Everton

23

Looking at the table above, Davis has amazingly accumulated as many key passes as Chelsea superstar Cole Palmer, despite Palmer boasting three more assists in league action for Enzo Maresca’s men.

Davis has also bettered Bukayo Saka’s key pass numbers, with the 43-time England senior international on 21 for the season, compared next to his Ipswich counterpart’s heftier 24.

Therefore, McKenna will know the key to staying up this season is to get even more out of the explosive defender, starting with Man United up next when the hustle and bustle of the top-flight resumes.

It could make for a fascinating battle, with Amorim loving the use of expansive wing-backs like Davis in his own set-up, with the 24-year-old perhaps poached by a bigger club like the Red Devils in the near future if he can get to his A-Game in the Premier League.

Bayern and Dortmund eyeing bid to sign Ipswich Town star amid £40m+ update

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are two of the sides eyeing a bid to sign an Ipswich Town star in 2025, following a £40m+ update regarding his future.

Latest Ipswich news

The Tractor Boys return to Premier League action this weekend, looking to build on their 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United last Sunday, not to mention their stunning 2-1 victory away to Tottenham earlier in the month.

Ipswich make the trip to Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon, with two defeats in a row for the Midlands club suggesting that their strong early-season form could now be a thing of the past, with Kieran McKenna’s side facing them at a good time.

The Tractor Boys could be eyeing new signings once the January transfer window opens, and while experienced players would be ideal in their fight to avoid relegation back to the Championship, 18-year-old Celtic forward Daniel Cummings has been linked with a move to the club.

There are many players who have impressed for Ipswich since their return to the Premier League, from left-back Leif Davis to attacking ace Liam Delap, and now a worrying Portman Road exit rumour has emerged.

Eight clubs eyeing £40m+ Ipswich star Delap

According to Caught Offside, as many as eight clubs are interested in signing Ipswich striker Delap in 2025, following his eye-catching start to the season in the Premier League.

Bundesliga giants Bayern and Dortmund are among those on the list, as are Arsenal, who see him as “another name under consideration” with Alexander Isak. Alongside the trio, Aston Villa, Newcastle, RB Leipzig, Ajax and PSV are also named. Delap could cost as much as £41.5m, with the Tractor Boys desperate to retain the services of one of their best players.

Losing Delap so soon after signing him would be a significant blow for Ipswich, with the 21-year-old one of the most exciting young striker in the country at the moment.

He has scored six goals in just 11 Premier League starts this season – an impressive tally for a side languishing near the bottom of the table – and Danny Murphy has heaped praise on him in recent days, backing him to become a force for England over time:

“He’s got a lot of qualities. I’ve seen him quite a lot this season and I’d probably go as far as to say that, for me, he’s the obvious long-term successor to Kane. I think he’s the best young English striker out there. I know he’s got a bit to learn, and wisdom comes with experience and game time in this league, but he’s got all the attributes to be a top international player.”

Unfortunately for Ipswich, the lure of playing for a bigger club is always going to be there for a player like Delap, who will want to reach his potential after failing to fully make the grade at Manchester City.

"Outstanding" Liverpool player injured with Konate and could miss 9 games

Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Real Madrid has seemingly come at a costly price, with Ibrahima Konate set to be out until 2025 alongside another absentee in a double blow for Arne Slot.

Liverpool injury news

Whilst some title rivals may be quick to mention Liverpool’s lack of injury struggles now that the quality of their opponents has become a worthless argument, the Reds are far from without their concerns. At various points in the current campaign, Slot has already been without Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Konstantinos Tsimikas, Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott. Now, the Dutchman’s set to miss key man Konate for up to six weeks.

Now likely turning towards either the experienced Joe Gomez or the younger Jarell Quansah, Liverpool must hope to escape a hectic festive period unscathed and with their Premier League lead intact. But it’s not just that Frenchman that Slot will be without.

According to The Belfast Telegraph, Conor Bradley is also set to be sidelined for up to six weeks after suffering an injury in his excellent display against Kylian Mabppe and Real Madrid.

A major relief for Arne Slot.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 1, 2024

The Northern Irishman acts as the perfect cover for Alexander-Arnold – as highlighted against Real Madrid – but could now miss the next nine Liverpool games. His injury creates quite the dilemma for Slot too.

In usual circumstances, Gomez would be the man to provide cover for Alexander-Arnold in Bradley’s absence, but he’s now needed to provide cover in central defence amid Konate’s injury and potentially even at left-back until Tsimikas returns from his own injury. So, just who would step in if Alexander-Arnold also suffered an ill-timed knock remains to be seen.

Games that "outstanding" Bradley could miss for Liverpool

Liverpool’s injuries have piled up at the busiest time of the year in the Premier League. During December, alone, the Reds are set to play eight more games after already squaring off against Manchester City. It’s a period in which squad depth is key and squad depth that Liverpool currently have sidelined rather than sitting on the Anfield bench this month.

A cup quarter-final and games against two of the Premier League’s top six, Liverpool will undoubtedly miss the backup that Bradley provides for Alexander-Arnold amid so many fixtures.

Newcastle now join Premier League race to sign La Liga "hero" for Howe

As their search to sign a fresh attacking option continues, Newcastle United have reportedly joined the race to sign a La Liga winger alongside a number of their Premier League rivals.

Newcastle transfer news

It seems like a fairly open secret that Miguel Almiron is at the back end of his Newcastle career. The winger has lost his starting place under Eddie Howe and is now reportedly ready to leave when the January transfer window arrives. The Magpies, meanwhile, are reportedly in pursuit of a fresh face to take hold of that right-wing spot at St James’ Park.

PIF must finally sell outcast who Howe thinks is "important" for Newcastle

Newcastle will want to strengthen in the transfer market, but they should move some deadweight too.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 29, 2024

Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo are names that are seemingly on the Magpies’ radar, with both enjoying excellent seasons so far in the Premier League.

Mbeumo would be a particularly impressive addition given how he can also lead the line and therefore provide potential cover for Alexander Isak. However, whether Newcastle find themselves priced out of a move by a fellow Premier League side once again remains to be seen.

The Brentford and Bournemouth stars aren’t the only options to have been mentioned, either. The Tyneside club have also turned their attention towards La Liga and one in-demand winger.

Brentford'sBryanMbeumocelebrates scoring

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Paul Mitchell and Newcastle have now joined the race to sign Takefusa Kubo after Mitchell sent scouts to watch the winger score and assist in a midweek victory for Real Sociedad against Ajax.

However, officials from Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal were in attendance for the winger’s show-stealing performance, sparking a tough race for his signature.

Still just 23 years old, Kubo is a player who looks destined for a big move. Given Newcastle’s current desire to upgrade the options on their right-hand side, the Japan star could quickly become the ideal signing for those at St James’ Park.

"Hero" Kubo would be an upgrade on Almiron

Yet to even reach his prime, Kubo would be an instant upgrade on Almiron and take Harvey Barnes all the way in the battle to start in Howe’s frontline.

The Sociedad star has managed four goals and one assist in all competitions in the current campaign, mirroring Barnes’ current output for Newcastle and indicating the kind of rivalry that could be created between the two should the former complete a transfer.

Having two options capable of pushing each other all the way should be seen as the key to success on Tyneside. That competition and strength in depth is something that the Magpies so desperately lack. Dubbed “Japan’s hero” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig at the 2020 Olympics, Kubo could swap Sociedad for the Premier League when 2025 arrives.

As Newcastle search for a new hero of their own, they could turn the way of Kubo to discover an undoubted upgrade on Almiron and the ideal competition for Barnes on the right-hand side.

Celtic have unearthed a "magical" star who’s now similar to a £74m gem

Celtic have gone four matches without a defeat in the Champions League after they managed to pick up 0-0 draw with Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night.

The Hoops, who have only lost one of their six matches in the league phase so far, failed to create much of note in the game, though, and failed to get close to securing all three points.

Brendan Rodgers will now have his focus on Sunday’s trip to Hampden Park for the League Cup final clash with Rangers, as they look to win the first trophy of the season.

German forward Nicolas Kuhn could be key for the Hoops as the Northern Irish head coach appears to have unearthed the club’s new superstar with him.

Nicolas Kuhn's form this season

The former Rapid Vienna winger, who joined in the January transfer window earlier this year, has been in fantastic form as both a scorer and a creator of goals for the Scottish giants.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Kuhn, who was dubbed “magical” by his boss in pre-season, has failed to provide a goal or an assist in his last four appearances for Celtic and will be hoping to get back involved in the goals against Rangers this weekend.

Prior to this quiet run, the German star had scored 11 goals and grabbed 11 assists in 18 appearances in all competitions for the Premiership champions, including four goals and four assists in three League Cup matches.

Rodgers appears to have got the best out of Kuhn after his initial return of three goals and three assists in 18 outings during the second half of last season.

His emergence as a star at Parkhead this season is, perhaps, best summed up by him being compared to one of the top wingers in Europe in the Champions League.

Nicolas Kuhn compared to £74m sensation

As per FBref, AC Milan sensation Rafa Leao has been one of the most similar players to Kuhn from a statistical perspective in the competition this term.

As you can see in the chart above, they are not like-for-like in style but both players look to drive forward with the ball at their feet, with progressive carries and take-on attempts.

They also both provide a creative threat from wide areas, with Leao cutting in on his right from the left with Milan and Kuhn cutting in on his left from the right with Celtic.

It was recently reported that Barcelona are interested in signing the Portugal international from Milan and that the Serie A giants could be willing to cash in on him for a fee of up to €90m (£74m), which illustrates how impressive the Celtic star’s performances in Europe have been.

As you can see in the table above, Kuhn has outperformed Leao in the Champions League so far this term, with as many goals, more key passes, and more ‘big chances’ created for his side.

That is not to say that Celtic should now be valuing the German attacker at more than £74m but it does show the kind of level he is performing at in Europe, as the left-footed maestro is earning comparisons to players of that ilk.

Rodgers has unearthed a new superstar at Parkhead and supporters will surely be hoping that they can enjoy his talents for many more seasons to come.

As well as Solomon: 122-touch Leeds star was Farke’s unsung hero

Leeds United bounced back to winning ways in the Championship on Saturday with a thumping 4-0 victory over Oxford United at Elland Road.

Goals from Dan James, Jayden Bogle, Manor Solomon, and Brenden Aaronson secured all three points for the Whites, after they had failed to beat Preston North End at Deepdale last weekend.

Daniel Farke’s side needed a stoppage-time own goal to seal a point in Lancashire, but they showcased their true quality at the top end of the pitch with a ruthless display in West Yorkshire this time out.

One of the stars of the show for Leeds in the comprehensive victory at Elland Road was Tottenham Hotspur loanee Solomon, who scored his third of the season.

Manor Solomon's performance against Oxford

The forward set up the opening goal by bursting into the box down the left flank before sliding a perfect ball across for James to fire into the back of the net from close range.

Solomon recorded his second assist of the afternoon for the third goal of the game, playing a brilliant pass into the path of Aaronson – who brilliantly controlled and produced a composed finish past Jamie Cumming.

The Israel international then got his name on the scoresheet with a rasping near-post shot that was too powerful for the Oxford goalkeeper, who appeared to let it go through him.

Solomon, who also completed three of his five attempted dribbles, was directly involved in three of the four goals and deserves plenty of praise for his exceptional display on the left flank.

Amid all the praise that will likely come the way of the attacking players who scored or assisted the goals, an unsung hero from the game could be central midfielder Ao Tanaka.

Why Ao Tanaka was the unsung hero

The Japan international was not directly involved in any of the four goals but his outstanding performance in the middle of the park paved the foundations for Farke’s team to dominate and win.

His metronomic presence in possession and tenacious play off the ball helped to facilitate a terrific all-round team display from the Whites against Oxford.

He made one tackle and two interceptions without being dribbled past a single time, which shows that the opposition players struggled to get the better of him in transition moments when the away side did win the ball back.

As you can see in the table above, Tanaka was almost perfect in possession for the Whites, completing a staggering 100 passes – 28 more than central midfield partner Joe Rothwell (72).

Only Ethan Ampadu at centre-back (104) completed more passes than Tanaka and this speaks to how involved the former Fortuna Dusseldorf star was for Leeds, as he was central to the way they built the play and carved open the Oxford defence.

Therefore, the Japanese maestro was the unsung hero of the game for Farke because his sensational display was up there with Solomon’s contributions, despite not registering a goal or an assist.
