Derby County EFL development emerges

Derby County may begin next season still unaware of their possible EFL sanctions.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a report by Sky Sports, who claim that the independent disciplinary commission, which will hear the case regarding Derby’s accounting irregularities, will not meet for at least a fortnight.

The report goes on to state that, upon the verdict of the hearing, the Rams are almost certain to lodge an appeal, which could then lead to a legal case that drags on for months.

It is also claimed that, should the panel determine that Derby’s alleged accounting errors mean that the club broke the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability rules, they would most likely be hit with a significant point deduction, but when they’ll find out confirmation of what that deduction will be is very much up in the air.

Morris will be livid

This news would not be good to learn at the best of times for a football club, let alone one that is currently in talks regarding a takeover.

Indeed, with Derby’s future appearing incredibly uncertain at present, a situation that does not look like changing anytime soon, Mel Morris could well find that any potential suitors hold off on finalising a bid while they wait and see just how badly the Rams will be hit by the disciplinary commission.

The fact that a resolution will not be found for a number of months is also likely to have a negative impact on the club in the upcoming transfer window, as, should Derby indeed be handed a substantial points deduction, their chances of relegation would dramatically increase ahead of next season, something that will undoubtedly put players off of a move to Pride Park.

These eventualities are sure to leave Morris livid, as the businessman is reported to be desperate to sell the club as, recently, he has personally been paying the club’s £1.2m monthly wage bill due to the Rams’ dire financial situation.

However, unfortunately for Morris, Wayne Rooney and the Derby County fans, there appears to be no light at the end of the tunnel for the Rams just yet, with what would seem to be an extremely tough few months ahead of the club still to come.

Foyth negotiations underway for Spurs

According to a report by Spanish news outlet El Periódico Mediterráneo, as translated by Sport Witness, Villarreal negotiations are underway to sign Tottenham Hotspur starlet Juan Foyth on a permanent deal.

The Lowdown: Foyth impresses in Spain…

Over the course of 2020/2021, it’s safe to say Foyth enjoyed a very fruitful spell overall whilst on loan at the La Liga giants.

Despite coming in and out of the team with three different injury problems over the season, he still managed to make 32 appearances in all competitions for El Submarino Amarillo (Transfermarkt).

According to WhoScored, over his 16 La Liga appearances, he made more successful tackles per 90 than any player in the side (2.5) – perhaps highlighting his colossal presence at times for the eventual Europa League winners.

The Latest: Villarreal negotiations underway…

Now, as per El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Spanish club have been so impressed with Foyth they have already commenced negotiations over bringing him to the Estadio de la Cerámica on a permanent deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They have a €15 million (£12.9m) buy option inserted into the loan agreement from 2020 but wish to reduce that fee amid financial uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

It is also claimed that landing Foyth is now a ‘priority’ for Villarreal and they hope Spurs will lower their demands for the 23-year-old.

While talks are already underway, if they are to come to an agreement, the negotiations will need to ‘intensify’.

One aspect which may boost them is Foyth’s alleged desire to exit Spurs, with this report claiming he now ‘wants to continue’ with them and ‘leave England’.

The Verdict: Possible big loss…

Depending on developments and whether or not Spurs chairman Daniel Levy agrees to the new terms, Foyth’s exit may be a big loss to the Lilywhites’ next manager.

It is clear by his numbers this term that he has a bright future and that was encapsulated by his brave performance in the Europa League final against Manchester United.

Journalist Charlie Eccleshare, of the Athletic, told Spurs supporters in a Q&A last year how Foyth is a ‘really exciting player’ and the Argentine has only gone on to back that claim.

Letting him depart for a fee lower than £12.9m would be disastrous by Levy, especially in this financial climate when every penny could be useful in putting towards a summer transfer kitty.

Leicester linked with Tammy Abraham

Leicester City have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham this summer.

What’s the story?

World Cup-winning forward Olivier Giroud has extended his contract at Stamford Bridge for a further 12 months, increasing the chances of Abraham departing over the upcoming transfer window.

The 23-year-old fell out of favour under new Blues boss Thomas Tuchel, starting just three Premier League games under the German, and is expected to be available for around £40m.

Rodgers will be delighted

Leicester narrowly missed out on a place in the top four last season, and Brendan Rodgers will be keen to bolster his squad ahead of a renewed push for Champions League qualification. Although Jamie Vardy still managed a healthy haul of 15 top-flight goals in 2020/21, the 34-year-old showed signs that he’s starting to slow down.

Before the former England international bagged a brace on the final day of the campaign, he had scored just one goal in his previous 13 Premier League appearances.

Vardy’s sudden drop-off in form highlights the need for Rodgers to add extra firepower to Leicester’s squad, especially if he wants to fight on multiple fronts next season.

Qualification for the Europa League will be a welcome addition to the Foxes’ calendar in 2021/22, but the extra games means that quality additions will be required if the FA Cup holders are to continue their progression, and Rodgers may well be delighted at recent events surrounding the Champions League winners.

While Abraham may have been reduced to watching from the stands throughout Tuchel’s reign at Stamford Bridge, the youngster impressed under former boss Frank Lampard, bagging 18 goals in all competitions during the 42-year-old’s only full season in charge of Chelsea.

The Englishman also shone while on loan at Aston Villa in 2018/19, with former team-mate Jack Grealish complimenting his compatriot during a Q&A session on his Instagram.

“Unbelievable. Couldn’t believe how good he was with the ball for how tall he is. Loved playing with him,” the England playmaker about Abraham (as reported by the Chelsea Chronicle).

His arrival at the King Power Stadium would be a real statement of intent from Leicester and Rodgers as the 2016 Premier League champions look to return to Europe’s elite cup competition.

Spurs: Galtier would be Paratici’s dream

One of Tottenham Hotspur’s mooted managerial candidates has been linked to a rival Premier League job this week…

What’s the word?

According to The Sun’s former chief football writer Ian McGarry, Spurs are interested in recently departed Lille head coach Christophe Galtier, as revealed on a recent episode of his ‘The Transfer Window’ podcast.

He said:

“Spurs have been heavily linked with trying to get Mauricio Pochettino to return to London as their manager.

“However, it’s also the case that we understand here at The Transfer Window podcast that Lille, newly crowned champions of Ligue 1, have received a note of interest from Tottenham in their coach Christophe Galtier, who Spurs are interested in on the basis that it may be the case PSG will be recalcitrant, and certainly difficult to deal with taking Pochettino back.”

But they now face competition from top-flight rivals Everton, who have been linked to the 54-year-old following Carlo Ancelotti’s shock return to Real Madrid.

Even Galtier’s former director of football Luis Campos has thrown his weight behind the move, claiming to Sky Sports News that he “has all the qualities to coach in England.”

“Technically he is very astute and is extremely detailed in his planning when preparing a team,” the Frenchman said. “He likes a 4-4-2 system, which would fit with the Premier League and he is a fantastic motivator in the dressing room. He likes to build a side with quality and youth, he is someone that can develop a team ethic, and he is also a fantastic human being.”

Dream for Paratici

After suffering further setbacks over Pochettino and Antonio Conte, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would be silly to not consider the man that pipped his former coach to the Ligue 1 title in sensational fashion this season.

Even more so now he’s available for nothing – free to join whoever he wants.

Galtier steered Lille to their first league triumph in a decade, defeating Paris Saint-Germain by one point, having also ended the campaign with the best defensive record in the division.

Spurs are close to sealing another landmark appointment, with former Juventus director Fabio Paratici expected to become the club’s first sporting director since 2015 in the coming days.

And the French veteran could be the perfect boss to work in tandem with the Italian.

Lille have become renowned for unearthing the next big talent and then selling them on for profit, with Nicolas Pepe, Victor Osimhen and Gabriel all recent examples. They all benefitted from Galtier’s coaching.

Meanwhile, Paratici played a major part in the Serie A giants clinching 19 trophies in 11 years through his own recruitment.

In 2012, he nabbed Paul Pogba from Manchester United on a free, aged just 19, whilst Kingsley Coman, Paulo Dybala and Federico Chiesa were other young names he signed during his time at the Allianz Stadium.

Galtier’s record is even more impressive as he’s only ever been in charge of two clubs – Lille and Saint-Etienne – where he amassed a whopping 232 wins from 513 matches (45%).

Both Paratici and Galtier could be a match made in heaven for Levy, going by the above evidence so he ought to do what he can to bring the two together this summer.

Everton manager update on Conte, Potter

Some Everton fans have been left to fume as a manager update emerged on Antonio Conte, Graham Potter and Nuno Espirito Santo.

As per the Daily Telegraph, the Goodison Park faithful still hold an interest in Nuno Espirito Santo, while they have also made enquiries over the availability of both Antonio Conte and Graham Potter.

While each manager has their own merits, and have each tasted some level of success in the Premier League, there are certainly question marks over whether they would be the right fit at the Merseyside club.

Potter may not be able to make what is quite a big step up from Brighton and Hove Albion to the Toffees, while Nuno endured a disappointing 2020/21 season with Wolves, finishing in a measly 13th spot in the table.

Conte has come off the back of a title-winning campaign with Inter Milan, but has been known to fall out with various boards at certain clubs he has managed, including Chelsea.

These Blues supporters fumed as the manager update was shared across Twitter:

West Ham linked with Aaron Ramsey

West Ham are monitoring former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who looks set to leave Juventus.

That’s according to a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato.

The lowdown

Ramsey is said to be ‘destined’ to leave Turin after what the report calls ‘two seasons full of physical problems and misunderstandings’.

The Welshman joined Juventus on the expiry of his Arsenal contract ahead of the 2019/20 season.

He signed a four-year deal worth as much as £400,000 per week with the Old Lady.

The 30-year-old made 13 Serie A starts last season, scoring twice and providing four assists.

£12.6million-rated midfielder Ramsey is currently on Euro 2020 duty, so the uncertainty surrounding his future may be prolonged.

The latest

The Premier League apparently offers ‘the greatest outlets’ to Ramsey, with West Ham not the only English club considering a move.

Crystal Palace and Everton are also named, though the latter will have to wait until a successor for Carlo Ancelotti is appointed before they can proceed with their business.

Ramsey’s entourage is said to be in ‘constant’ contact with potential buyers.

The verdict

A fit and firing Ramsey is an outstanding player of course, but this wouldn’t be a sensible move for West Ham.

Just since joining Juventus, he has missed games with nine different injury concerns – it’s simply too much of a gamble when considering the wages he would likely demand.

Though you’d think Ramsey will be forced to agree to a substantial pay-cut if he does depart Turin, even a 50% reduction would make him the Hammers’ highest-paid player by some distance.

The club should continue boxing clever in the market instead of making reckless moves for big names.

Scott Parker edging closer to Fulham exit

Fulham manager Scott Parker is edging closer to a departure from Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Sky Sports, who claim that the 40-year-old and the Cottagers are currently finalising the mutual termination of his contract, ahead of Parker’s expected move to Bournemouth on the 1st July.

The report goes on to state that the former England international has already put together his backroom staff in anticipation of taking over at the Vitality Stadium, with the Cherries incumbent manager Jonathan Woodgate looking set to leave the club at the end of the month.

Khan will be relieved

With the uncertainty surrounding Parker’s future in west London swirling for a number of weeks now, the fact that Fulham appear close to finally closing the 40-year-old’s chapter at the club is sure to have left both Shahid and Tony Khan feeling rather relieved.

Indeed, it had been reported that the relationship between the Fulham hierarchy and the coach had broken down significantly following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last term, with Parker having made comments during the season regarding the actions of Tony Khan in relation to the club’s transfer business, with the manager labelling the director’s involvement as “frustrating.”

However, with the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder now looking extremely likely to be on the way to Bournemouth at the end of the month, Khan can now begin to turn his attention to appointing Parker’s successor, with recent reports claiming that Swansea City’s Steve Cooper is under the consideration of the Fulham bosses.

Whoever the new manager ends up being, however, one thing is certain – Khan will be expecting a swift return to the Premier League next season, and anything other than achieving this feat would represent something of a disaster for Fulham, and likely result in the unknown manager’s sacking.

Man City: Fans react to recent Harry Kane transfer update

Manchester City are willing to wait 12 months to acquire an ‘ideal striker’ amid obstacles to signing reported target Harry Kane, as relayed by City Xtra.

In need of a replacement for club legend Sergio Aguero, the Blues could elect to hold off for a year before effectively replacing the Argentinian [ESPN].

Signing a lengthy contract extension back in 2016 at Tottenham Hotspur, the England captain still has three years to run on his deal at the Londoners, who allegedly value his signature at more than £150 million according to reports [City Xtra].

Enjoying a stunning 2020/21 season, Kane chipped in with an unbelievable 50 goal contributions for Spurs in 49 fixtures; 33 goals and 17 assists [Transfermarkt].

In light of the news that the Citizens are set to hold off on his prospective signature, no wonder loads of Manchester City diehards took to Twitter to protest.

City fans react:

Replying to the City Xtra Twitter page, here is how some supporters summarized their feelings on these recent developments:

“A massive gamble”

Palace and Villa eyeing up Abraham

An update has emerged on Crystal Palace target Tammy Abraham, regarding Aston Villa’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to The Mirror, Crystal Palace are interested in signing Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham this summer and are facing competition from Aston Villa.

The report claims that Dean Smith’s side are expected to make a sizeable transfer offer for the Blues forward and Thomas Tuchel has made it clear that he will not be part of his plans at Stamford Bridge moving forward, with Timo Werner preferred ahead of him in the pecking order.

Fans would love him

Steve Parish must ensure that he is able to seal a deal for Abraham ahead of Villa this summer as the Palace fans would love him at Selhurst Park. The English hitman is a proven player at Premier League level and could be the club’s starting number nine for many years to come, with Christian Benteke recently signing a two-year deal but heading into his 30’s.

Outside of Wilfried Zaha and the Belgian attacker, Ebe Eze was the next highest scorer for the club with four strikes in the league. This suggests that Palace are in desperate need of additional goal threats and Abraham could be exactly what they need, given his quality at this level.

In 2019, ex-Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand compared him to Ivorian legend Didier Drogba in how he holds the ball up and helps his teammates, highlighting the 23-year-old’s ability and showing why he could be a superb signing for the Eagles.

He told BT Sport, as transcribed by The Express:

“I saw elements in Tammy’s game today that I hadn’t seen as much that I’d have liked to. His hold-up play, coming to the ball and bringing others into play.

“First half, one ball went up to him, Didier Drogba-esque, chests it down for someone, runs on for the next phase – I think he’s developing nicely. He’s scoring goals, he’s scoring different types of goals and I think he’s a threat.”

The £50k-per-week beast has an impressive goalscoring record throughout his career. He excelled at Championship level whilst on loan to Bristol City and then Aston Villa, scoring 48 goals in 78 matches in the second tier.

Initially on loan at Swansea and then in the first-team at Stamford Bridge, Abraham continued finding the back of the net after making the step up to the Premier League. The towering centre-forward has scored 26 goals and provided eight assists in 89 top-flight appearances, whilst only starting 52 of those matches  – averaging a goal every two starts.

This is why Palace fans would love him at the club as he has a track record of scoring goals in this country. Therefore, he could be a safer option than a player who has never played in England and may not be able to adapt to the way football is played, making them a risky signing.

Everton fans on Richarlison call-up

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as news emerged involving Richarlison.

As per the Brazil international team’s official Twitter page, he has been called up to their squad for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The Games do not end until Sunday 8 August, and the Toffees’ first fixture of the new 2021/22 Premier League season is at home against Southampton the following Saturday.

Given that he has been involved in the Copa America as well, it means that Richarlison is very likely to miss that first game against the Saints and maybe a few more after that, depending on how much rest he is given by Rafa Benitez.

Nonetheless, it is no surprise to see so many Everton supporters fuming, as it is likely that they will be without the 24-year-old for the start of the campaign.
