Newcastle United: Magpies agree fee for first summer signing

The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder has revealed that Newcastle United have already agreed a deal in principle to sign Matt Targett permanently this summer.

The Lowdown: Targett at NUFC

On January’s transfer deadline day, Newcastle announced the signing of Aston Villa left-back Targett, joining the Magpies on loan until the end of the season as Lucas Digne took his place in the Midlands.

The 26-year-old was Eddie Howe’s fourth transfer of the winter window, following Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimarães as they joined up with the squad at St. James’ Park, before Dan Burn followed on the final day.

Since arriving at the club, Targett has played the full 90 minutes in all four games that he’s been available for, and is yet to lose a Premier League game in a Magpies shirt.

The Latest: Deal agreed

Taking to Twitter, Ryder revealed the exciting transfer news.

“Newcastle United already have deal agreed in principle for first summer signing.”

In his article, the Chronicle journalist went on to confirm that Newcastle have agreed an option to turn the defender’s deal into a permanent move, with a fee of around £15 million already set with Steven Gerrard’s Villa side.

The decision is now effectively down to Newcastle and the player himself, who, according to the reliable Ryder, is already looking at accommodation options for beyond his loan spell.

The Verdict: ‘Massive’ signing

Prior to January, Newcastle struggled defensively, leaving them with the current fourth-worst defensive record in the league. Consequently, the club set out to bolster their options at the back, and Howe’s side have since conceded just three goals whilst Targett has been on the pitch.

Upon signing, pundit Noel Whelan insisted that Targett will make a “massive difference” in a struggling Magpies defence, and so far, he has been proven correct, with Targett ranking as the club’s fifth-best player already (Whoscored).

Therefore, if Newcastle are now able to get the personal terms sorted, this will be a great start to the window, meaning the club have immediately ticked off one problem position and can focus on bringing in new additions elsewhere.

Everton eye swoop for Merih Demiral

Everton are interested in signing £27m-rated Atalanta defender Merih Demiral this summer and he could be the perfect replacement for Michael Keane.

What’s the story?

According to journalist Yakup Cinar (via Goodison News) Everton are among several sides who are “interested” in signing the 24-year-old who’s is currently on loan at Atalanta from Juventus.

They have the option to make the move permanent in the summer for £23.5m, but could potentially sell Demiral on for a profit like they did with Cristian Romero. When interviewed by TuttoJuve.com Cinar said that the interest in the player is high.

He’s miles better than Keane

Everton are battling for survival at the moment and are currently in the relegation zone. Whether or not they stay in the Premier League this summer doesn’t change the fact that they need a squad overhaul.

Many of their current players have underperformed massively this season, and one of those is defender Michael Keane, who Demiral could replace if he is brought to Goodison Park.

Keane has featured several times for the Toffees this season and has been a key part of their troubled defence. They have only managed to keep six clean sheets in the league all campaign, and it has led to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher rightly calling their back four “Championship level”.

Demiral has been described by outlet Goal as a “brick wall” and at 6 foot 2, he is a strong presence in the box. He impressed when facing English side Manchester United in the group stage of the Champions League earlier this season, scoring versus the Red Devils and winning 100% of his duels in a 3-2 defeat, so he has proven himself against Premier League opposition already.

The Turkey international is a force in the air, being ranked in the top 2% when it comes to aerial duals won compared with other centre backs in Europe’s top five leagues over the last year.

When you compare him directly to Keane he’s also better on the ball with a higher pass completion percentage of 87.5% compared to 77.3%. He’s also tackled a higher percentage of dribblers than the Englishman.

If Demiral is available at a decent price in the summer then Frank Lampard should look no further than him to solve their issues at the back. At 24 he can also be a figurehead at the club for years to come.

Tchouameni "interested" in Liverpool move

Liverpool have been handed a fresh update in their pursuit of Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

What’s the story?

According to the Empire of the Kop, Liverpool’s contact with Tchouameni’s agent has been confirmed and the 22-year-old is ‘very interested’ in a move to the Merseyside club.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Journalist Santi Aouna shared: “For the moment, there is just some contact with his agent. Monaco knows it too. The player is very interested in Liverpool.”

Aouna also labelled the Monaco midfielder as “mature” whilst also being a “complete player” whilst an asking price of £42m was previously reported.

Liverpool must sign Tchouameni

If Liverpool need to add quality to any position of their excellent squad this summer, it’s arguably in midfield.

The Reds have a plethora of options in the middle, such as Thiago, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner, however, some could depart Anfield this summer.

Milner’s contract is set to expire next month and the veteran is yet to sign an extension whilst Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s current deals run out next summer and they could therefore be sold this window to raise funds.

Oxlade-Chamberlain in particular may be a player who will seek more regular game time this summer with the Englishman making 29 appearances for Liverpool so far this term, with just 17 in the Premier League.

As for Tchouameni, the 22-year-old has missed just two Ligue 1 matches this term, amounting 47 appearances across all competitions.

Having joined Monaco from fellow French side Bordeaux in January 2020, the Frenchman has already amassed 96 appearances for his side and certainly appears to have an exciting pedigree.

As well as that, Tchouameni has made a breakthrough into the French national team, making eight appearances since September.

The defensive midfielder averages a whopping 75.4 touches per match in the French top flight whilst his passing rate stands at 87%.

Moreover, his defensive contributions are excellent too, providing 2.8 interceptions, 2.5 tackles and 0.8 clearances a game, well and truly living up to the tag of a “beast” that writer Sacha Pisani handed him.

If any of Liverpool’s current crop of midfielders are set to leave this summer it appears as though Milner’s departure could be likely with the 36-year-old’s deal set to expire.

Having said that, the Mirror did recently report that the Englishman was offered a one-year contract at the start of the season.

If the midfielder is to depart the Merseyside club this summer, then it appears as though Jurgen Klopp can find an ideal heir to replace the veteran in Tchouameni.

Leeds: Marsch must axe Dan James v Man City

Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United side head into Saturday evening’s Premier League clash against Manchester City in a fine run of form, with the Whites remaining undefeated over their last five league fixtures.

However, with Pep Guardiola’s outfit very much in need of a result at Elland Road in order to maintain their position at the top of the table, the 48-year-old Leeds manager will be well aware that his side are in for a tough task this weekend.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

Although the Whites currently sit five points above 18th-placed Everton with just five games left to play, the American will certainly be hoping to fully secure the club’s place in the top flight next season sooner rather than later.

As such, if Marsch is to have any hope of picking up a result against City this evening, he must ensure that his team selection is absolutely spot-on. One big decision that the former RB Leipzig manager faces is that of who to start up top.

Indeed, with Patrick Bamford remaining sidelined, it would appear to be a choice between Joe Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood or Daniel James, with the latter having started seven of the club’s last nine league matches at centre-forward despite being more renowned as a winger.

However, with the £25m summer signing failing to find the net in this period, many have started to question exactly why Marsch continues to deploy the Wales international through the middle while the likes of Gelhardt and Greenwood remain on the bench.

This is something the 48-year-old addressed in his pre-match press conference, stating: “I’ve spoken to Dan multiple times, I know this isn’t his desired or best position. But Dan there can mean we’re able to control what [the opposition] are doing better.”

This point of view is questionable, with James having been largely ineffective when attempting to hold the ball up, being unable to interlink play with the Whites midfielders adequately and – most importantly – being wasteful in front of goal over the last couple of months. Indeed, the 24-year-old has failed to earn a SofaScore match rating above 6.8 over his last 11 league outings.

As such, it would seem advisable for Marsch to actually deploy one of the two centre-forwards he has available for selection in that role against Manchester City, as it is clear that the £50k-per-week James – who Chris Sutton dubbed “pathetic” – is just not good enough to lead the line for Leeds.

Leeds: Orta makes contact for Traore

Leeds United are interested in a move to bring Adama Traore to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by TEAMtalk, who claimed that Victor Orta and his Elland Road transfer team have made contact with the Wolves winger regarding a switch to LS11 at the end of the current campaign.

The report added that the forward, who is currently on loan at Barcelona, looks set to return to Molineux this summer, after it was revealed that the La Liga side do not intend to activate their €30m (£25.5m) option to purchase the 26-year-old.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

Finally, it is also claimed that Tottenham Hotspur, who saw a bid for the Spain international rejected in the January transfer window, are set to reignite their interest in a move for the forward at the end of the season.

It could be bye-bye Raphinha

With Barcelona being heavily linked with a move for Raphinha this summer, the fact that Orta is now reported to be in talks with Traore regarding a move to Elland Road could easily be viewed as the sporting director planning for life after the Brazil international.

While Traore’s end product sometimes leaves a lot to be desired for a player in his position, the 26-year-old’s incredible ability to progress the ball would nevertheless appear to make him a fine prospective signing for the Whites.

Indeed, according to FBRef, the £25.2m-rated maestro ranks in the top 1% of wingers in Europe’s big five leagues for dribbles completed per 90 minutes, in addition to the top 4% for progressive carries, the top 12% for touches in the opposition penalty area, the top 24% for shot-creating actions and the top 29% for aerial duels won over the last 365 days.

Furthermore, the £46k-per-week attacker is also proven in the Premier League, with his best campaign for Wolves coming back in 2019/20. Over his 37 top-flight appearances that season, Traore scored four goals, registered nine assists and created 10 big chances for his team-mates, along with taking 1.2 shots, making 1.3 key passes and completing 4.9 dribbles per game.

These returns saw the player who Jurgen Klopp dubbed an “unbelievable” talent average a quite remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.27, not only ranking him as Wolves’ best performer in the league but also as the 11th-best player in the entire division.

As such, should Jesse Marsch believe he would be able to help Traore rediscover this level of form following a potential moveto Leeds, the eight-cap Spain international would indeed appear an excellent replacement for the seemingly outbound Raphinha.

Crystal Palace should move for Joe Aribo

Patrick Vieira has had a solid start to life at Crystal Palace so far, leading his team to a challenge for a top-half Premier League finish in his first managerial role in England.

Add to that a run to the FA Cup semi-finals and it has been a productive season, but the 45-year-old won’t want to stop there. His winning mentality shone through as he captained Arsenal to a host of trophies during his playing career and he will aim for Palace to win some kind of silverware.

In order to do so, he will need to bolster the squad, and there have been links with many talented players, with Joe Aribo being one of the standouts.

Palace’s interest in the 25-year-old stretches back to October last year, during a spell where the Nigeria international was arguably Steven Gerrard’s best player at the time at Ibrox.

His ascendency from young prospect to a player who is imperative to Rangers’ success has perhaps always been in the making. His performances once led Gerrard to claim he “has the world at his feet” and indeed Aribo has looked like a player who could thrive in any league.

The £14k-p/w star would enhance a Palace team that Vieira is looking to lead to big things, and with him and Wilfried Zaha in the same team, defenders would be in for a torrid time.

Whilst Aribo has fewer goals than the Ivorian this season (eight to 14) the 25-year-old has registered more assists in all competitions (seven to two), proving that scoring isn’t his only strength and that he has the creative skills to make him a success in England.

Vieira would surely love to have both Aribo and Zaha in the same team, although there is no doubt that the Rangers side would be much poorer without the midfielder, and it could well take a big fee for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to even consider selling the Nigerian.

It could be a nervy time for Rangers fans in the summer transfer window, but a very exciting one for the Selhurst Park faithful.

Tottenham: Journalist shares interesting Kounde transfer update

Tottenham Hotspur could now be back in contention to sign Sevilla star Jules Kounde after club chief Fabio Paratici’s attempts last summer, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Spurs attempt 2021 deal…

Spurs attempted to sign the France international defender last summer with credible reports even sharing that the Premier League top-four chasers had agreed a swap deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio broke news that the Lilywhites shook hands with Sevilla on €30 million (£25m) plus Davinson Sanchez in part exchange.

However, following on from that development, Marca then revealed that Kounde rejected the move to north London in a bitter blow for Paratici.

The Latest: Lilywhites back in contention…

In a surprise development, journalist Rudy Galetti, sharing news late Tuesday, now claims that Antonio Conte’s side are back in contention as Spurs, and by extension Paratici, eye a summer move (Tribal Football).

It is believed that they’re joined in the race by Man United and Newcastle with a move by Man City also on the cards.

Galetti adds that the time may be now for Kounde to ‘say goodbye’ to Sevilla after staying last summer.

The Verdict: Make the move?

A mainstay and crucial player for Sevilla again this season, it’s no surprise Paratici is back in the mix for Kounde.

Only two players in Julen Lopetegui’s squad have been handed more La Liga minutes over 2021/2022 than the 23-year-old, who is Sevilla’s second-best performer by average match rating per 90 (WhoScored).

Kounde, making a colossal 3.1 clearances every game with only defender Diego Carlos bettering that number, also wins 2.4 aerial duels per encounter on average – the joint-most out of any Sevilla player (WhoScored).

Integral to Lopetegui, it’s little wonder they refused to sell for less than his €80 million (£68m) release clause.

Whether or not they budge on that stance remains to be seen, but if so, Paratici shouldn’t hesitate in opening talks.

Raving over the links to Kounde last summer, ex-Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson claimed he is the ‘world-class centre-half that Spurs so desperately need’ – tipping his possible signing to ‘excite’ supporters (Football Insider).

Plaudits like these and the Frenchman’s brilliant form this season point towards a very good possible signing for Spurs.

Ehsan Mani set to meet PM Imran Khan amid speculation over his future

With the PCB chairman’s term due to end on August 25, Ramiz Raja’s name has cropped up as a potential successor

Umar Farooq21-Aug-2021Amid growing speculation around his future as PCB chairman, Ehsan Mani is set to meet Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday. The meeting has, it is understood, been convened on Imran’s wishes, and could be seen as significant to Mani’s future within the board.Mani’s current term is due to end on August 25, two days after the meeting, though he has recently said he intends to continue in the post. Whether he does or does not, however, has become the subject of intense speculation in recent days in which the name of Ramiz Raja, the commentator and former Pakistan captain, has cropped up as a potential successor. The Prime Minister is also patron of the PCB and the constitutional authority who, via the two nominees he appoints to the PCB board of governors, has a say in who becomes board chairperson. The ten-member governing board also includes four independent members, three provisional cricket association heads, and the chief executive officer. While all nine existing board members are eligible to contest the elections, historically only one of the two individuals directly nominated by the Prime Minister has become the PCB chairman.Though the two nominees are yet to be named, the patron’s office has already named a former supreme court judge, Justice (retired) Sheikh Azmat, as the commissioner to carry out the election of the PCB chairperson. Mani was previously the only candidate to have submitted his nomination papers for the post, and all members of the Board of Governors unanimously voted for him to head the PCB. He had replaced Najam Sethi, who had resigned when Imran’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), came to power in the federal government. In case the patron extends Mani’s tenure, he will have to go through another process for his re-election as, according to the PCB constitution, a chairperson’s total tenure “shall in no case exceed a period of six years”. Mani has only completed three years so far.No agenda has been revealed for the meeting with the Prime Minister, but the performance and the highlights over Mani’s three years as chairman are likely to be discussed. During his term, Mani revamped the functioning of the PCB, redrafting the board’s constitution to bring it in line with the practices of corporate governance. Until 2019, the PCB chairperson could also act as CEO, which gave them the power to implement whichever of the board’s policies they thought were fit. This has since been curbed by introducing the position of a chief executive officer. The PCB under Mani also brought in enormous changes in the domestic structure, dismantling the previous mix of departmental and regional cricket and implementing the provincial-team model at Imran’s insistence. The change sparked country-wide outrage with the new system costing several players their livelihoods, but the PCB eventually created jobs for all veteran cricketers at the association level, offering them opportunities on various scales ranging from administrative jobs to field jobs.Mani has also put in place a through review of Pakistan cricket’s biggest revenue-generating product, the Pakistan Super League, and faces a time crunch to revise the financial model of the league. The PSL is set to reassess the value of its assets this year before selling its commercial and broadcasting rights. The last three-year cycle for the TV and digital streaming rights, worth approximately USD 36 million, has come to an end this year.

Canada, UAE and Papua New Guinea make it to 2022 Under-19 Men's World Cup

The three teams progress automatically as Americas, Asia and EAP qualifiers cancelled due to Covid-19 complications

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Aug-2021Qualifying events for the 2022 Men’s Under-19 World Cup have been cancelled for the Americas, Asia and East-Asia Pacific regions, due to complications arising out of Covid-19. This means that Canada, UAE and Papua New Guinea (PNG) make it through to the main event, which is set to be played in the West Indies in early 2022. An ICC statement said the three teams progress “on the basis of them securing the most wins in the last five U-19 qualifying events in each respective region”.The statement also said that the ICC has in place member-approved Covid-19 guidelines for the running of all pathway events, and these could not be met ahead of the qualifying tournaments, leading to their cancellation. For the U-19 events, the statement said, the guidelines take into account “the duty of care required for minors” and “clearly outline the parameters under which the events can or can’t go ahead due to Covid restrictions”.”Under the member-approved guidelines, where teams have withdrawn due to the impact caused by the pandemic, we had no other alternative but to cancel these three events,” ICC’s head of events, Chris Tetley, said. “We have worked closely with all members to try to ensure results can be determined on the field of play, however for these events it was not possible. Canada, UAE and PNG will all progress … in line with the decision taken by the ICC Board in November 2020 in relation to cancelled qualifying events.”Related

Qualifying events for two regions remain to be played: Europe and Africa. Both tournaments are scheduled to be played in September-October and, again due to the impact of the virus, the Africa tournament has been shifted to Rwanda from Nigeria. Ireland, Jersey, Netherlands and Scotland will contest the Europe competition, while Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda are lined up for the Africa edition. The top team from each tournament will make it to the World Cup.The U-19 World Cup is set for its 14th edition, with Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe already having qualified.Earlier in the day, the ICC had announced that Turkey had pulled out of the Europe qualifier for the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup due to Covid-19 complications.

Mark Wood hoping he and Tymal Mills can 'bring the fire' for England

Extra pace could provide cutting edge in T20 World Cup bid

Andrew Miller15-Oct-2021Mark Wood hopes to prove once again that two 90mph fast bowlers can make the difference in T20 cricket, as he and Tymal Mills prepare to dovetail in England’s World Cup line-up, just as Wood and the injured Jofra Archer have done in previous campaigns.Speaking from Oman, where the England squad have been warming up ahead of next week’s tournament opener against West Indies, Wood admitted that he cannot feel 100% assured of a starting berth, but with Mills back in the reckoning, and in line for his first England appearance since 2017 and only his fifth overall, he was confident that their skills can complement one another.Related

“We’re all competing for places here because there’s only a certain amount of seamers that can play, but I don’t feel like me and ‘T’ are in direct competition,” Wood said. “We’re all part of a squad here that’s trying to win the World Cup, so we’ll all be desperately trying to do that.”Wood, of course, has enjoyed that World Cup-winning feeling once before, claiming 18 wickets at 25.72 in England’s 50-over triumph in 2019. And while Mills, like Archer, has a repertoire of slower balls that mean pace is not the be-all and end-all of his game, Wood recalled how a focus on the speed gun during that tournament helped to propel the two England quicks to greater heights – both he and Archer matched Australia’s Mitchell Starc in bowling the fastest balls of the tournament at 154kph (95.7mph) – and said he hopes to get his juices flowing with Mills as well.”It worked for me and Jofra, so me and T might have to keep it going,” Wood said. “He’s looked sharp in the nets, and to watch him, I certainly wouldn’t want to face him. He’s looking the business at the minute so hopefully he can bring some fire and I’ll have to up my game as well.”Wood is conscious, however, of the need for subtlety as well as speed, especially given the prospect of some less-than-sympathetic tracks for fast bowlers in the UAE. The surfaces at Dubai and Abu Dhabi are likely to be tired ones following the conclusion of the IPL, while Sharjah – the venue for their final two group games, including South Africa on November 6 – is a notoriously tough places for the quicks, with its short boundaries and propensity for excess dew.”[The conditions] put extra pressure on us to deliver, so we’ll have to be up for the challenge,” Wood said. “We do keep an eye on the pitches there, and it’s not just the wickets, it’s the dimensions – the field in Sharjah is quite small, Abu Dhabi is obviously wide. But it’s good that we get a heads-up [through the IPL].”My contribution might not just be in the wickets column,” he added. “If it is a spinner’s track, my role might be to keep it down as much as I can and then the spinners can attack from the other end. The thing you have to do is adapt within the game anyway.”It’s potentially a far cry from the lively surfaces in Ahmedabad on which Wood impressed during England’s 3-2 series loss in India in March – a campaign that had been earmarked as their World Cup sighter until the tournament had to be relocated to the UAE due to Covid. On that occasion, he was habitually unleashed as first-change after Archer, with a licence to attack the Powerplay – most notably with figures of 3 for 31 in an eight-wicket win in the third match at Ahmedabad.”I think my role will be fairly similar,” Wood said. “I’ll be trying to attack and take wickets up-front and hopefully in the middle. We will have to adapt and assess conditions, but I still think, if I do play, that’s how I’ll be used.”In India I did that well but also there was a game that didn’t go well, which I got smacked in,” he added, recalling his figures of 0 for 53 in the fifth and final match, as India sealed the series with a 36-run win. “If you get too far ahead of yourself, it can knock your confidence, so we’ll try to stay as level as we can throughout the competition. We will all have good days and bad days, so it’s just trying to make sure there’s no stone unturned when it comes to the main stuff.”Wood’s opportunities to hone his T20 skills have been few and far between in recent months. Though he bowled with pace against an outclassed Sri Lanka side in two T20Is in June, a bout of Covid during the summer kept him out of action during England’s three-match series against Pakistan in July, while his involvement in England’s Test bubble meant he was unable to feature either for Durham in the Vitality Blast or for London Spirit in the Hundred. As a consequence, there has been a lot of focus on match scenarios in Oman, ahead of the team’s relocation to Dubai on Saturday where they will play warm-up matches against India and New Zealand. “We’ve been practising Super Overs, practising single-ball events,” Wood said. “Batters need six, batters need four, batters need two, batters need one … practising Powerplay overs. It’s been a bit more specific than just nets and fielding.”In the absence of any game-time of his own, Wood said that he had been keeping tabs of the progress of South Africa’s Anrich Nortje, whose raw pace transcended the tough UAE conditions in Delhi Capitals’ advance to the IPL play-offs.”He’s bowled really well, he’s bowled quickly, looking at his role if I can back that up and try to bowl like he has then I’m sure I can have success,” Wood said. There is plenty that remains unclear for England’s World Cup plans – especially since their captain, Eoin Morgan, currently in action with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL final, won’t be linking up with the squad until their arrival in Dubai. But Wood has full faith in a group that has achieved unprecedented white-ball success for England in recent years, and believes a second piece of global silverware is firmly within their grasp.”We’ve got a huge chance,” he said. “We’ve got a great team. We’ve very similar players from the 50-over team to the Twenty20, and whoever’s come in has got up to speed quickly, has got into the team ethos and values and the positive way we play. It’s a good time now to cement something pretty special.”
