Cricket ready to honour Phillip Hughes on 10-year anniversary

Players will wear black armbands in all three upcoming Sheffield Shield games while Hughes will also be remembered during the second Test

AAP22-Nov-2024Cricket Australia will fly flags at half-mast and black armbands will return to players’ uniforms as the sport prepares to mark the 10-year anniversary of Phillip Hughes’ death.Saturday’s Sheffield Shield round will begin two weeks of commemorations for Hughes, whose life was tragically cut short days before his 26th birthday in 2014.Officials have adopted a uniform approach across the board, with Hughes’ former team South Australia to face Western Australia in Adelaide from Saturday.Hughes’ childhood team New South Wales will also host Tasmania at the SCG from Sunday, while Queensland and Victoria play at the Gabba.Players will wear black armbands in all three games, while a moment’s silence will also be observed before play on day four of all matches. For the Sydney and Brisbane matches, Wednesday’s final day of play will coincide with the 10-year anniversary of Hughes’ death on November 27, 2014.Officials have opted to use the Adelaide Test between Australia and India as the best time to celebrate Hughes with the national team, while sharing their plans with his family. His passing will be marked when that match begins on December 6, almost 10 years to the day since Test cricket resumed in Australia after Hughes’ death. CA has filmed a documentary in conjunction with Hughes’ family to mark the occasion, which will be broadcast before play in that Test. Many column inches have also already been dedicated to the opener, who played 26 Tests for Australia and was earmarked as a long-term fixture in the side.”We understand this will be a time of reflection for the many people who knew and admired Phillip Hughes,” Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said. “We wanted to ensure that the Hughes family, particularly, were comfortable with any commemorations and that we celebrate Phillip’s life and incredible achievements appropriately.”Hughes’ death two days after he was struck in the neck by a ball at the SCG in 2014 remains one of the most difficult periods in cricket history. The Macksville junior was one of the most popular members of the national team, and remains close to the heart of several Australian players.Off the field, his legacy remains strong, with Hughes’ family still involved in his angus cattle farm Four 0 Eight on the NSW north coast.Cricket initially found itself at a loss of how to play on, with Hughes having been set to bat his way back into the Australian team when not out on 63 at the SCG.He was posthumously named as Australia’s 13th man for the rejigged first Test in Adelaide, where 63 seconds of applause were observed before play.

Bumrah likely to make India's Champions Trophy squad subject to fitness

India are going to announce their 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy on Saturday

Nagraj Gollapudi18-Jan-2025Jasprit Bumrah could make it to India’s Champions Trophy squad subject to him being fit in time for the tournament that begins on February 19.ESPNcricinfo has learned the injury that prevented Bumrah from bowling on the fifth day of the Sydney Test is stress related. Though the first round of tests did not reveal a stress fracture in the back, it is understood the discomfort Bumrah suffered was related to his workload in the five Tests in Australia. He bowled 151.2 overs in nine innings, taking 32 wickets at an average of 13.06 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Accordingly, on advice from medical experts, the BCCI decided to allow Bumrah rest for at least five weeks (the Sydney Test finished on January 5) after which he will undergo another scan to determine if he can return to action.Related

The deadline to submit the final Champions Trophy squad to the ICC is February 11.As it stands, Bumrah is likely to be named in India’s 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy that will be announced on Saturday, with an asterisk against his name, implying his inclusion is subject to fitness.India play three ODIs against England on February 6, 9 and 12 – their first ODIs since the tour of Sri Lanka in August last year – before the Champions Trophy begins on February 19. India are in Group A in the Champions Trophy and begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, after which they play Pakistan on February 23, and New Zealand on March 2. India play all their matches in Dubai because their government refused to let the team travel to Pakistan.

Archie Vaughan, son of former captain Michael, set to lead England Under-19s

Teenager named to lead youth tour of South Africa later this month

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jan-2025Archie Vaughan, son of former England captain Michael, is set to follow in his father’s footsteps later this month, after being asked to lead England Under-19s on their tour of South Africa.England’s Young Lions are due to play three youth one-day internationals and two youth Tests against South Africa Under-19s, from January 17. It is 20 years to the month since Vaughan senior became the first England captain to win a Test series in South Africa in the post-Apartheid era.”I found out that I was going to be captain during the training camp before Christmas and it was a very special moment,” Vaughan, a top-order batter and offspinner, said. “To get the opportunity to represent England at this level is really special in itself, but to lead the team out is something else.”Having signed his first professional contract with Somerset in May, Vaughan made his county debut in July and shot to prominence in the team’s Championship run-in at Taunton in September. In tandem with Jack Leach, he claimed match figures of 11 for 140 to beat league leaders Surrey and briefly spark hopes of the club’s first title. In total, he played four first-class and seven 50-over matches for Somerset, averaging 33.71 with the bat in the Championship. He also impressed at age-group level, making 85 from 83 balls for a Young Lions Invitational XI in a warm-up match against the England Under-19 ODI squad, for whom Rocky Flintoff – son of Andrew Flintoff – top-scored with 106.”If someone had told me 12 months ago that I would have forced my way into the Somerset first team and be captaining the Under-19s, I wouldn’t have believed them,” Vaughan added. “It’s happened quickly but I’m going to keep my feet on the ground and work harder and harder.”Vaughan’s father went on to become one of the most successful England captains of all time, with 26 victories in 51 Tests in charge between 2003 and 2008, including the 2005 Ashes triumph.England Under-19s squad: Archie Vaughan (Somerset, capt), Farhan Ahmed (Nottinghamshire), Tazeem Ali (Warwickshire), Ben Dawkins (Kent), Kesh Fonseka (Lancashire – Test squad only), Alex French (Surrey), Alex Green (Leicestershire), Jack Home (Worcestershire), James Isbell (Middlesex), Eddie Jack (Hampshire), Ben Mayes (Hampshire), James Minto (Durham), Harry Moore (Derbyshire), Joe Moores (Lancashire – ODIs only), Thomas Rew (Somerset), Aaryan Sawant (Middlesex), Naavya Sharma (Middlesex), Alexander Wade (Yorkshire)

Bartlett, Neser break through NSW resistance as Queensland claim vital win

A century stand between Josh Philippe and Jack Edwards threatened to rescue the visitors but they were bowled out with 10 overs remaining

AAP11-Feb-2025Queensland’s quicks were made to toil for a much-needed 188-run Sheffield Shield victory that appeared inevitable before some New South Wales resistance at the Gabba.Set a 418-run victory target, a successful chase was never on the radar as NSW sunk to 89 for 6 thanks to more disciplined pace bowling from the hosts. But they showed fight, wicketkeeper Josh Philippe (80) and allrounder Jack Edwards (53) backing up his first-innings century to keep alive hopes of a draw with a stand of 125 in 44 overs.Related

Opening pair Xavier Bartlett and Michael Neser would not be denied though. The duo struck in quick succession – Bartlett trapping Philippe lbw and Edwards edging Neser to slip – to leave them plenty of time to mop up the tail midway through the final session with 10 overs remaining when Liam Hatcher nicked Bartlett to Jimmy Peirson.Earlier Sam Konstas tried all of his tricks to outwit the Queensland’s new-ball pair, only to edge one of the first deliveries he faced from good mate and second-change quick Tom Straker.Straker did the early damage before Mark Steketee and captain Mitchell Swepson ran through the middle order to leave NSW in disarray.Matt Renshaw made 125 on Monday while Jack Clayton scored a first-inning century but was forced to retire hurt with a hamstring injury on 76 in his second dig that will rule him out in the short term.Sam Konstas brings out the scoop•Getty Images

“It was just an all-round performance,” Swepson said. “Too many names to mention really…[I could] pretty much name the whole 11. We were a bit worried with the batting firepower they had that something around that 350 mark they could have chased down.”Taking early wickets really helped then every time I asked someone to come on…they locked in. It was so easy to captain that bowling attack.”It was Queensland’s second Shield win, the side keeping pace on a stacked ladder with three matches still to play.”This game was massive for our season, even going back to the game before the Big Bash,” Swepson said. “Two in a row has set us up…we’re right in the hunt.”Edwards lamented the loss of early wickets in both innings.”They’re a class bowling attack and we started well against that second new ball, but to lose me and Philippe in successive overs was tough,” the captain said. Both innings [being] five for not many, makes it tough.”

Welsh-born Imad Wasim signs for Glamorgan

Left-arm spinner joins as injury replacement for Australian Hayden Kerr

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jun-2025Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim has signed for Glamorgan as an overseas player for the remainder of the Vitality Blast campaign. The 37-year old, who was born in Swansea, joins to replace Hayden Kerr, who picked up in the home game against Surrey which will rule him out of his planned stint with the club.Returning to the country to his birth, Wasim brings a wealth of experience with 130 international caps for Pakistan. He will be representing his second Blast club having made 19 appearances for Nottinghamshire in the competition. He has also played for Trent Rockets in the Hundred, and has 390 appearances in the T20 format.Subject to approval from the Pakistan Cricket Board Imad will be available for selection for Saturday’s home fixture with Sussex. Glamorgan currently sit fourth in the South Group, with three wins from five.Commenting on the signing Director of Cricket Mark Wallace said: “It’s a real shame that Hayden’s injury has turned out to be a bit worse than we initially hoped. He has settled in really well and though he won’t quite be fit to fulfil his initial contract at the club we hope to see Hayden back in a Glamorgan shirt in the future.””To be able to bring in someone of Imad’s experience and quality at such short notice is fantastic. He’ll give us plenty of options to bowl at a variety of times with the ball and as another left-handed batting option in the middle order. We’re looking forward to welcoming him back to Wales.”

Pakistan fan 'asked to cover shirt' during England-India Test

Lancashire have said they are investigating the incident at Old Trafford

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jul-2025Lancashire have said they are investigating after an incident in which a fan attending the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford was asked to cover up the Pakistan shirt they were wearing. The fan, named in Pakistani media as Farooq Nazar, posted a video on social media documenting the request, initially from a member of the security staff at the ground, that he cover the shirt, a replica of Pakistan’s traditional green limited-overs kit.The security guard, who identifies himself as working for Lancashire, says: “I’ve been asked by control if you can cover that shirt up, please.” Later on, a steward can be heard saying the shirt “might be considered nationalistic”.Related

In the video, Nazar can be seen becoming increasingly agitated amid repeated requests to cover up. Eventually, he is approached by a police officer, who asks to continue the conversation away from the stands. According to reports, Nazar then opted to leave the ground rather than hide his shirt.Political relations between India and Pakistan, frosty for years, have been at their most tense this year, following a brief military skirmish between the two countries in May. Those tensions have filtered into relations between the BCCI and PCB; the two sides have not played a bilateral series since 2012-13 and no Test cricket since 2007-08. Their participation in ICC events hosted by either country has also recently become problematic, with a neutral venue added in to stage their games as part of a hybrid solution to the issue. It is unclear on which day of the Test, which ended in a draw as India batted their way through five sessions, the incident took place but Lancashire confirmed they were looking into it.”We are aware of the incident referenced and are taking steps to understand the facts and context surrounding the matter fully,” a Lancashire spokesperson said.In recent years, Lancashire have openly spoken of building their links with India. The Hundred team based at the ground, Manchester Originals, are set to become 70% owned by Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG group, which runs Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, while Lancashire’s chief executive, Daniel Gidney, has suggested giving the BCCI a stake in the 100-ball tournament.

Rangpur overcome late scare to secure spot in the final

Qais’ late cameo wasn’t enough for Dubai Capitals to avoid being knocked out

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Jul-2025After beating Hobart Hurricanes by one run, the Global Super League defending champions Rangpur Riders overcame a late scare to register another narrow victory, this time to seal a spot in the final. The loss officially knocked Dubai Capitals out of the competition.Capitals needed 28 in the last two overs with two wickets in hand, but Qais Ahmad – aided by sloppy fielding – brought the equation to 9 off 8 with two sixes and a four. However, the innings ended with four balls to spare. Ibrahim Zadran calmly caught Qais on the long-on boundary and Khaled Ahmed dismissed Dominic Drakes.Chasing 159 on a slow pitch, Capitals were in early trouble as Kadeem Alleyne was bowled by a nip-backer from Kyle Mayers and Gulbadin Naib chopped on to Iftikhar Ahmed, who had an excellent all-round game. Niroshan Dickwella, after surviving two drops and an edge that fell safe, was out caught behind off Saif Hassan, the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 20.Capitals were reeling at 28 for 3 despite Sediqullah Atal hitting four boundaries in his first 15 balls. Sanjay Krishnamurthi joined Atal to stitch the biggest partnership of the innings, 48 runs for the fourth wicket.Iftikhar Ahmed’s 41* gave Rangpur Riders a good finish•GSL/Getty Images

A slide followed as Rakibul Hasan had Krishnamurthi caught at cover in a soft dismissal. Saif Hassan struck twice in the 13th, first having Shakib Al Hasan stumped and then beating Atal’s reverse sweep to have him lbw.Drakes and Jesse Bootan picked up boundaries but a mix-up between them had the latter run out in the 16th over. At 115 for 7, the match seemed effectively done.Earlier in the day, Drakes found swing to beat Ibrahim’s straight drive and trap him lbw. Kaleem Sana was hit for three sixes in the next over with Mayers flat-batting and whipping the ball in style.Mayers continued to chance his arm and had edges land safely before he fell when spin was introduced, miscuing a flick to mid-on off Mustafa.Soumya Sarkar and Mahidul Islam Ankon were kept quiet as Rangpur slowed down from 40 for 1 in four overs to 57 for 1 in eight. Mahidul then skied a drive that Qais ran back to catch at mid-on. In the next over, Sarkar hit Shakib for a six and fell two balls later.Shakib found turn and didn’t offer pace in the middle overs. Azmatullah Omarzai fell for a 13-ball 8 with Rangpur on 104 for 5 in the 15th over.Rangpur scored just 20 runs between overs 14 and 18 before Iftikhar and captain Nurul Hasan got hold of Drakes and Naib. They shared three fours and three sixes to plunder 37 in the last two overs and lift Rangpur to 158.

The Chalkboard: Should Jurgen Klopp start Fabinho or Rafael Camacho vs Leicester?

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool have a huge game on Wednesday evening, as they welcome Leicester to Anfield with the intention of extending their lead at the top of the Premier League following Manchester City’s defeat to Newcastle United on Tuesday, although it will certainly be a tricky test against a side with some wonderfully talented individuals who managed to beat Chelsea and Manchester City over the festive period.

Big decision for Jurgen Klopp

The Reds’ official website confirmed that both Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho, who were doubts for the visit of Claude Puel’s men, have trained this week and should be fine for the game, along with Dejan Lovren and Gini Wijnaldum who also had problems.

First-choice right back Trent Alexander-Arnold is still not quite ready for a return to action, however, so Klopp must make a decision on who he starts on the right of defence against a tricky attack containing the likes of Jamie Vardy, James Maddison and Demarai Gray.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Brazilian international Fabinho can play there if needs be, although he is a natural centre midfielder, whilst James Milner, who would unquestionably deputise in that role, is missing through suspension after being sent off against Crystal Palace.

Fabinho is a player of tremendous quality, but against the likes of Gray and Vardy on the counter-attack, Klopp should probably opt for a quicker option in that position – 18-year-old Rafael Camacho.

Who is Camacho and what does he offer?

The teenager has played just one minute of Premier League action in his career (via Whoscored), playing the final stages of the 4-3 win against the Eagles last time out – he made one massively crucial tackle on Wilfried Zaha inside the box with just seconds left.

Unlike Fabinho, Camacho offers Klopp more pace down that side, and seeing as Leicester are likely to sit back and look to hit the Merseysiders on the counter-attack, perhaps a pacey player down the right flank to offer an overlap and get in behind the Foxes’ back four would be the best course of action for Klopp to take.
