Zimbabwe players given financial guarantee by PCB for tour

Zimbabwe’s cricketers were given a guarantee of US$12,500 each by the Pakistan Cricket Board before they agreed to tour that country for a historic series last month, ESPNcricinfo has learned. The tour, the first by a Full Member team since March 2009, went ahead despite advice to the contrary from the Zimbabwe government’s Sports and Recreation Committee (SRC).The individual payments were part of the US$500,000 the PCB is understood to have paid Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) before the tour. The PCB has not commented on the issue of any financial payments to ZC or the players. The amount paid to the individual players is substantially more than nationally contracted Zimbabwean cricketers’ monthly salaries, which are US$6,500 a month at their maximum and comes with the players still waiting to be paid their World Cup fees. The PCB initially offered Zimbabwe’s players US$10,000 each, which a significant number of players felt was too little given the safety concerns. That was the reason behind ZC issuing a press release on May 14, eight days before the first match, confirming the suspension of the tour on the instructions of the SRC. Less than half an hour later, ZC recanted and said discussions were ongoing between the PCB and ZC. Insiders have revealed this was when the PCB upped their offer to Zimbabwe’s cricketers, offering to pay those that were still wary even more money to make the trip.An agreement was reached on US$12,500 although one source believes some players may have still negotiated more money. The money is understood to have been paid in two amounts, the first on arrival and the second at the conclusion of the series, which could explain why Zimbabwe stayed on despite a suicide attack during their second ODI.ZC is also believed to have benefitted financially from agreeing to be the first Test-playing team to tour Pakistan since 2009. One source revealed that Ozias Bvute, the former managing director of ZC, played a role in securing the deals even though he resigned from his post in July 2012. His resignation followed his implication in the mismanagement of an ICC loan to ZC but he remained an advisor to the board.Bvute traveled with the Zimbabwe team as the head of their delegation, and ZC chairman Wilson Manase said his role was because of his experience in the country. “Because of the terrain, I had to look back at the people we have in the administration who have the experience and I realised that Ozias Bvute has been to Pakistan before,” Manase told . “Bvute was the most suitable candidate…We need someone like him who can understand what to do, what to say to the players among other things.”The Zimbabwean team’s experience in Pakistan was described by several players in favourable terms. Sikandar Raza tweeted that Zimbabwe were”welcomed with open arms, smiles and love,” while Craig Ervine said he was “loving the passion for cricket in Pakistan,” and thanked the PCB for the “hospitality and security over this tour.”Over 3,500 security officials were deployed to look after the Zimbabwe team, whose only movement in Lahore was between the hotel and the Gaddafi stadium. They were due to go shopping the day before their final ODI but the trip was cancelled after the suicide attack.

Middlesex almost deliver on Franklin gamble

An entertaining finish to a weather-ravaged match at Merchant Taylors’ School saw Somerset, set 219 to win from 40 overs by Middlesex, make a spirited attempt before accepting the draw at 147 for 7.Middlesex had earlier declared their second innings at 132 for 6, after just 29 overs’ batting, in an effort to force a result following the loss of almost 144 overs to bad weather during the game.Marcus Trescothick, leading Somerset from the front, played a captain’s innings of 50 from 86 balls, to complete his second half-century of the match and he was supported well by Tom Abell, who made 21, James Hildreth’s 29 and 23 from Jim Allenby as Middlesex were made to sweat more than a little. At 113 for 3, with 15 overs left, Somerset were preparing for a final assault on a tough target – but Middlesex held their nerve. In the end, after Peter Trego had been superbly held at third slip by Sam Robson off seamer Tim Murtagh, who finished with 3 for 43, Middlesex had just three overs in which to take the last three Somerset wickets – and it proved beyond them. Hands were shaken after 39.4 overs had been bowled.Toby Roland-Jones helped Murtagh to spearhead the Middlesex attack in the absence of Steven Finn, who missed the last day after being retained in England’s second Ashes Test squad, and the tall paceman bowled with great heart and stamina to take 2 for 45 from 16 overs. James Harris, Finn’s replacement, chipped in with the wickets of Jamie Overton and Allenby just when it seemed as if Somerset might even make a fist of reaching their tough target.Overton, promoted from No. 11 to have a swing, skied a return catch from an attempted carve to leg to go for 5, and Allenby was brilliantly held by a sprawling Eoin Morgan at deep cover. Somerset had begun the last ten overs needing another 84, with six wickets in hand, but Allenby’s fall signalled the end of their chase. In Middlesex’s second innings it was skipper James Franklin who led the charge with 32 from 25 balls in which he swung Tim Groenewald for two sixes in an over, and John Simpson, with 17 not out, also drove Lewis Gregory over long on for six. The declaration came immediately after Ollie Rayner, in to face one ball after Franklin had heaved to deep-midwicket, slammed a straight four back past bowler Gregory. But batting was a tricky business on a pitch which was under cover all day yesterday when the third day was washed out, and for 25.3 overs on day two because of showers. There was more frustration this morning, too, when just 74 minutes’ play was possible in the first session before light rain frustratingly arrived at 12.14pm to drive the players from the field. An early lunch was taken at 12.45pm but more rain and bad light meant play was unable to resume after lunch until 2.10pm. A further brief bad light stoppage, with Middlesex at 66 for 3, threatened to ruin the prospect of an interesting finish, but thankfully the skies above north-west London lightened again.Somerset resumed their first innings on 185 for 8 this morning, in reply to Middlesex’s 283 on day one, and added only 12 more runs in 4.3 overs before being all out for 197. Groenewald was superbly held by Nick Compton when he skied Murtagh to mid-off, from the tenth ball of the day, and Michael Bates was then brilliantly run out by Morgan at mid-on as he tried to pinch a single from the last ball of the 75th over. When Middlesex batted again, Robson played some fine early shots before being caught behind off a beauty from Groenewald for 18, while Joe Burns was also beaten off the pitch by Trego’s seam movement and held at second slip for 10 by Trescothick. After lunch, Compton went skilfully to 30 before edging Overton to second slip, soon after the pacy Overton had detonated Dawid Malan’s stumps for 16 with a searing yorker. Morgan completed an unhappy match with the bat when, after Overton had given him a brief working over, he steered Trego to third slip to depart for a nine-ball duck and a dreaded pair.

Suriname pull out of ICC Americas U-19 Championship

Suriname’s anticipated debut at the ICC Americas U-19 Division One championship will have to wait at least another two years after the team was forced to withdraw from the event starting on Sunday in Bermuda

Peter Della Penna06-Jul-2015Suriname’s anticipated debut at the ICC Americas Under-19 Division One championship will have to wait at least another two years after the team was forced to withdraw from the event starting on Sunday in Bermuda. According to an ICC release, the U-19 Division Two champions had to pull out after failing to secure transit visas.A source told ESPNcricinfo that because there were no direct flights from Suriname to Bermuda, the squad needed to secure visas to transit through either the USA or Canada in order to get to Bermuda. However, the visa applications were not processed in time. The tournament’s format originally stipulated that the four competing teams – Bermuda, USA, Canada and Suriname – would play an initial round-robin stage after which the lowest-ranked team on the points table would be eliminated before commencing a second round-robin stage with the three remaining teams. Instead, USA, Bermuda and Canada will play a double round-robin amongst themselves, as was the format in 2013.The first-place team in Bermuda gains automatic entry into the 2016 ICC U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. The runner-up will have a second chance at qualification in a global qualifier comprised of runner-up teams from other ICC Associate regions due to be held in Nepal later this year.In addition to the 10 Full Members who received automatic entry, other teams to have qualified for next year’s U-19 World Cup include Afghanistan, Namibia and Fiji while the runner-up teams who have gained a spot at the repechage qualifier are Nepal, Uganda and Papua New Guinea. The ICC Europe U-19 Qualifier begins on July 11 in Jersey.

Botafogo 2 x 1 CSA: 18.199 presentes
Botafogo 0 x 2 Cruzeiro: 22.412 presentes
Botafogo 0 x 1 Flamengo: 23.092 presentes
Botafogo 2 x 0 Avaí: 19.075 presentes

Dispirited Netherlands feel pain of tough format

Netherlands did not have a bad tournament opener but they are almost out of the competition, and that broken spirit can be heard in Peter Borren’s voice

Sidharth Monga in Dharamsala09-Mar-2016Listen to Peter Borren after a fairly close defeat to a Test-playing nation, and you will feel the helplessness of these teams going through a cruel qualifying process. Clearly, Netherlands were not a side outplayed by Bangladesh. Perhaps, they bowled a couple of length balls too many at the death. Perhaps they missed one big shot in overs 17 and 18 when they batted. There shouldn’t be a way you put in such a show on day one of the tournament, and get knocked out. They almost are.Three hours into their tournament, Netherlands are almost out, and they know it. Now, they need a big win against Oman, Ireland to beat Bangladesh, and Oman not to win anything. A day before this started, the team was looking to downplay the pressure of the format and looking to put up a brave face, but in Borren’s voice now you could hear broken spirits and hearts.”It is such a tough tournament this you know,” Borren said. “You don’t get a warm-up or one bad result. Eight-run margin here, and I can find so many different moments to make up that eight runs. It’s going to be difficult. We have two more opportunities to play better cricket than we did tonight. We have some real characters in the team. It’s going to be tricky to qualify but I believe in the team and the character in the team.”It is a tough tournament, and it requires tough standards, which is why Borren was tough on his bowlers, who did a really good job for the most part of Bangladesh’s innings. “To me it is really disappointing,” Borren said. “To beat Bangladesh, who are a quality team, you have to play really good cricket, and I don’t think we did that today afternoon. Think with the ball, we bowled quite a few in the slot and went for six or seven sixes down the ground.”With the bat, Netherlands wanted to take the game deep and then back themselves under pressure. “We talk about getting into a position where any team can win the game and I’m pretty sure with four overs to go in this game, we were probably in the box seat,” Borren said. “And the 17th over, from Mashrafe Mortaza, was probably the one that’s killed us, I think. Three runs and the big wicket of Roelof van der Merwe. Very disappointed to have got us into a position where we should have won the game and not closed it out. Obviously credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. Taskin Ahmed hardly missed a yorker. But in saying that, very disappointing not to win having been in that situation.”That situation was 54 required off the last five overs, leading up to which Borren had managed 18 off 22 balls. From the 16th over onwards, you could see a clear and sudden shifting of gears, which perhaps left them too much to do. Borren agreed that perhaps they could have aimed for one big over earlier. “Ideal situation we would win in 18 overs,” Borren said. “But I think we got ourselves into a reasonable position to be honest. I agree I would have rather gone further ahead of the rate and not have to win it at the end. It’s true. Chasing 154, you don’t want to win the game in the last over.”Even if they learn that lesson, chances are it won’t help them in this tournament.

Sri Lanka batsman Kaushal Silva has been airlifted to a Colombo hospital, after being struck on the head during a practice match at Pallekele. Initial CAT scans suggested Silva was out of danger, but he will continue to be monitored as a precautionary measure.Team management said Silva appeared to have been struck just below the back rim of the helmet – in the padded wings that became part of helmet design following Phillip Hughes’ death. Teammates believe the injury could have been more substantial if he had been wearing a helmet without this added protection.”Kaushal was fielding at short leg when he got hit,” team manager Charith Senanayake said.”[Dinesh Chandimal] swept a ball right onto the back of Kaushal’s head. He did take evasive action, but still the ball hit him.”Senanayake said Silva was left dazed moments after the impact, and that he had exhibited symptoms consistent with concussion. The accident had occurred at about 3:30 pm and Silva was immediately taken to a Kandy hospital, where he underwent the initial CAT scan. The decision was then made to transfer him to Colombo. The two-day practice match had been part of the Sri Lanka team’s preparation for the tour of England, for which the side departs on May 3. Silva had struck a hundred in the first day of this match, and appeared likely to earn a place in Sri Lanka’s squad for the forthcoming Tests. Silva’s last Test came against West Indies in October 2015.
