'Pakistan series a tough challenge' – Ford

Sri Lanka head coach Graham Ford has said the upcoming series against Pakistan in the UAE will be a tough challenge for his team

Sa'adi Thawfeeq01-Dec-2013

Graham Ford: “Unfortunately we haven’t played nearly as much (as Pakistan) because of weather and various other things.”•AFP

Sri Lanka head coach Graham Ford has said the upcoming series against Pakistan in the UAE will be a tough challenge for his team. Ford added that Pakistan have been on the move of late despite the fact that their home venue is the UAE whereas Sri Lanka have been relatively dormant recently.”The advantage Pakistan’s got is that they have played a lot of international cricket in the last six-eight months whereas unfortunately we haven’t played nearly as much because of weather and various other things,” Ford said. “We’ve done as much as we can to make sure we are sharp and ready but nothing’s quite the same as being match-tight and match-sharp. They have got an advantage from that point of view and they have got some fantastically talented cricketers.”In the past eight months, Pakistan have played four Tests, 23 ODIs and eight T20s compared to Sri Lanka who have played no Tests, 17 ODIs and five T20s. The first Test against Pakistan, which starts on December 31 in Dubai, will be Sri Lanka’s first in nearly ten months and Ford said the players were keenly looking forward to the tour.”They have been out of cricket for a while and their energy and their effort in the training sessions has been exceptional. It is a great group to work with and motivation is never really anything of a problem,” Ford said. “I am not sure whether people realize just how proud these guys are to represent their country and they have often shown their characters when the chips are down. The time out of real top-class international cricket and tours being cancelled has made them hungry.”On their last tour to the UAE in 2011, Sri Lanka lost the three-Test series 1-0, the five-match ODI series 4-1 and also went down in the only T20. This time around they will again be involved in three Tests in addition to five ODIs and two T20s. The team is scheduled to leave for the UAE on December 6.”When Sri Lanka went their last it didn’t go all too well,” Ford said. “Hopefully we can show that we have made some progress. They are a very tough team to beat in the UAE and they are playing good cricket no matter where they play. They have done well against South Africa just recently. It really will be a tough challenge for us.”Some of the players have been talking about some of the things they need to expect are going to happen there. Everybody is that much wiser on the conditions and what to expect.”We had the advantage of a pretty good home series against Pakistan and we know quite a bit about their team and some of our boys have performed well against them so psychologically that’s also a boost for us. But at the end of the day it’s about getting down there and playing really well session for session.”Ever since Pakistan made the UAE their home base in 2010 they have not lost a single Test series there but Ford felt they were not invincible. “They cleaned up England 3-0 and from a psychological point of view they are aware that’s their fortress, that’s where they play well. But for us it’s an exciting challenge. That’s the way to make history, that’s the way the boys can make heroes of themselves. It’s tough but it’s not something that’s impossible.”One of the key points for Sri Lanka if they are to emerge victorious against Pakistan is how well their batsmen tackle the world-class spin of Saeed Ajmal. Ajmal was the leading wicket-taker for Pakistan in the 2011 series against Sri Lanka in the UAE with 18 Test wickets and 11 ODI wickets.”I’ve been involved only in one series with him and we played him quite well in that,” Ford said. “Certainly one or two of our players play him pretty well. Most batsmen in the world do have problems with him. It’s not like you are going to dominate him or he is an easy option. He is a factor in any series that he plays but we did cope with him last time around.”Obviously more players are comfortable than others against him. He is more successful in the UAE and the challenge is there. Any bowler that turns the ball in both directions and is difficult to read is a very effective man to have in your side. Added to the fact that he’s got the disguise and the ability to turn the ball both ways (is that) he’s got fantastic control. Those ingredients make him a tough bowler. Pakistan will be looking to him as a match-winner and we’ll be looking to try and neutralize him as possible.”Apart from Ajmal, Pakistan have got a few newcomers such as the seven-foot tall left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Irfan and left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar, whom most of the Sri Lanka batsmen have not faced.”We got video footage and the analyst prepares information for all the players and they’ll get their copy of the footage of players in the next day or two to study them,” Ford said. “There’s always a sharing of information. News gets around and some of these guys will have played against some of these chaps and seen them. You get some info about them from one or two people who played against them and get some sort of an idea of what type of cricketers they are.”Fortunately these days there is so much TV coverage that players can’t hide away. You are going to find out a lot about them. It’s one thing knowing about them and it’s another thing going out and playing against them.”Ford said Sri Lanka will miss Mahela Jayawardene’s experience during the limited-overs leg of the tour. The former captain has opted out for personal reasons. “You can’t say enough about Mahela’s contribution,” Ford said. “He is such an important person in the group. He is brilliant as a player, he sets the tone and he is a great example for the youngsters. His knowledge of the game is just unbelievable. I’ve learnt a huge amount from him.”Not having him around is a bit of a challenge but we’ve gone through periods without him before when he’s had injury problems and we managed pretty well. It’s something that the team is learning to adjust to and that’s something that they will have to in the future be able to do – go and play and win without him.”Ford dismissed the notion that Jayawardene’s absence would bring added pressure on the other two senior batsmen Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan. “Those two guys have thrived on pressure throughout their careers. They are both strong mentally and pressure might even be a good thing for them. I don’t think that is something to be concerned about. They know their game so well.”

'We have more positives than them' – Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara said South Africa had more reason to be disappointed after Wanderers

Sidharth Monga in Durban24-Dec-2013

Cheteshwar Pujara said the ball did more when India batted at Wanderers•AFP

India and South Africa know it will be important to put the last draw behind them and start afresh for Durban – which might be difficult with only three days’ gap in between – but India continued to try to claim psychological advantage after they pushed the No. 1 side to the brink in their backyard. Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 153 in the second innings in Johannesburg and was part of the highest partnership of the match, said South Africa had more reason to be disappointed after Wanderers.”If we look at the last game, we have more positives than them because when we batted first the ball was doing a bit,” Pujara said. “We batted well and when they batted in the first innings there wasn’t much help for the bowlers so the kind of comeback we made in [their] first innings. On the last day we were expecting more movement from the cracks but it didn’t happen. So I think they had the opportunity to bat well when the wicket was better and when we batted – even in the second innings – the ball was doing a bit. When they batted, at times there was a little bit of movement but they were lucky enough to survive.”In pushing South Africa to the edge, India also had to bowl their bowlers for longer than they would have liked considering the next Test starts in three days’ time. Two days after the match, Zaheer Khan – he bowled more than he has ever done in a Test – and Ishant Sharma gave the optional training session a miss. Pujara reassured that recovery should not be a problem.”Such close matches you expect in Test format,” Pujara said. “It was a very exciting Test. Don’t think there is any problem with the recovery. We are training a lot so we are fit enough to prepare for the next game, and there were a lot of positives for us to go ahead with a positive frame of mind in this match.”Emotional and mental recovery, though, might be a different issue. “It was difficult because we felt that we had a very good chance to win the match but just one partnership in one particular session didn’t go our way,” Pujara said. “So emotionally and mentally coming out [of it] and playing this match will be important. We have to forget what happened and focus on our plans after looking at the wicket tomorrow and work accordingly.”From what he has seen of South Africa’s batting, Pujara believes India can bowl them out twice. “The kind of batting line-up they have we have got a very good chance to bowl them out,” Pujara said. “Just AB [de Villiers] and Faf [du Plessis] were able to score big runs. Apart from them no one got big runs. So it’s a positive sign for us. We also believe that we can get them out. Also if you look at the last session, they were cautious about not going for the target so they are worried about their tail-enders not batting through. So it’s a positive sign for us.”India will take heart from the fact that Dale Steyn returned his worst figures in a Test, but will also be wary that Steyn, Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis are all unlikely to fail in back-to-back Tests. Pujara was not getting drawn into any complacence regarding Steyn. “It’s a good thing for us that he didn’t get any wickets,” Pujara said, “but he is a good bowler so we don’t want to underestimate him. And we have to be careful against him even in this match so as a team we can’t take him lightly. It’s just that we had very good success, and we will try and continue the same thing in this match.”South Africa’s spinner, though, is a different story. “Think [Imran] Tahir didn’t bowl well,” Pujara said. “Kind of expectations South Africa had of him, he didn’t bowl well enough and they also knew that they would have to bowl [JP] Duminy and him because Morne Morkel was injured in the second innings so we took the advantage and wanted to capitalise when they were on and we were successful. On that wicket there wasn’t much help for the spinners so I don’t want to rate anybody but I think we batted well and Indians are known to bat well against spinners.”South Africa look more positive about Morkel’s fitness than they did during the last Test. Pujara was not praying for his recovery, though. “It will make a huge difference for them because the kind of bounce he gets from the wicket it’s difficult to score runs against,” Pujara said. “They will have to bring in a new fast bowler, so whoever comes in hasn’t been playing for them. Even when they played in Abu Dhabi I don’t think he played that match. It’s a new guy coming in and now they have to think about their bowling line-up. Steyn and Morkel are used to bowling in partnership so it will make a huge difference.”

A conversa vai ajudar bastante.

Pakistan to take part in Asia Cup

The Asian Cricket Council, on Thursday, confirmed Pakistan’s participation in this year’s Asia Cup in Bangladesh

Mohammad Isam16-Jan-20140:00

Isam: SL tour will be important for Asia Cup

The Asian Cricket Council, on Thursday, confirmed Pakistan’s participation in this year’s Asia Cup in Bangladesh. However, the regional cricket body has said that the participation of all teams is subject to their individual government’s decision. Pakistan will now join Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in the tournament which will take place between February 25 and March 8.According to the ACC chief executive Ashraful Huq, Pakistan are “provisionally” scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on February 22, train for the next two days, and then play the tournament opener in Fatullah against Sri Lanka on February 25. Their security representative will arrive in Dhaka on Saturday, as part of the ICC’s security meeting on Monday.Schedule

February 25 – Pakistan v Sri Lanka, Fatullah

February 26 – Bangladesh v India, Fatullah

February 27 – Afghanistan v Pakistan, Fatullah

February 28 – India v Sri Lanka, Fatullah

March 1 – Bangladesh v Afghanistan, Fatullah

March 2 – India v Pakistan, Mirpur

March 3 – Afghanistan v Sri Lanka, Mirpur

March 4 – Bangladesh v Pakistan, Mirpur

March 5 – Afghanistan v India, Mirpur

March 6 – Bangladesh v Sri Lanka, Mirpur

March 8 – Final, Mirpur

“Obviously every country’s participation is subject to their government’s order, more so in the subcontinent,” Huq said. “Pakistan’s security officer will arrive here on January 18 to take part in the ICC’s security meeting which will, I am sure, give a clean report as there is no problem at the moment. The two officials of Sri Lanka Cricket are very close to me and they, too, I hope will give a clean report. The Pakistan team is provisionally booked to arrive on February 22 as they want to practice on February 23 and 24.”Even in the event of Pakistan pulling out, Huq said the tournament will go ahead as planned. He did however confirm that he had received assurance from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the political party that is opposing the government for not holding elections under a caretaker government.”The Asia Cup will go on even if any team decides not to participate in it,” Huq said. “Earlier in 1986 in Sri Lanka, India didn’t participate while in 1991, Pakistan didn’t participate in India.”I have been informed by BNP’s authorised spokesperson that they will support the event. But I can’t disclose a name. Those who believe that the Asia Cup will be shifted elsewhere are living in a fool’s paradise.”The 2012 Asia Cup in Bangladesh drew big crowds•AFP

Political violence has devastated Bangladesh in the last three months, but it is hoped that there won’t be much trouble during the time of the Asia Cup. On Wednesday, BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia did not announce any blockades or strikes for the month. This bodes well for the tournament as normal life has already resumed in many parts of the country, including Dhaka, in the last five days. The issue with Pakistan’s security concern is however related more to a diplomatic conflict, which is not entirely connected to the political impasse of the last three months. However, the BCB has guaranteed to the PCB that they will provide extra security personnel during Pakistan’s stay in Bangladesh. The other major talking point was the use of two venues – Fatullah and Mirpur – at two ends of Dhaka. The first five matches of the tournament will be held in Fatullah, to the south of Dhaka, and the rest, including the final on March 8, will be held at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. The hitch in the schedule is the lack of reserve days. Though it is a predominantly dry season, things could go haywire if rain interrupts, as there is only one rest day ahead of the final.
