Denly the difference for Middlesex

Joe Denly’s unbeaten hundred – his first for Middlesex – helped them to three batting points for the first time this season

If Middlesex and Worcestershire find themselves shoulder to shoulder near the bottom of the table in a few months’ time, battling each other to avoid relegation, then Joe Denly’s unbeaten hundred – his first for his new county – could turn out to be the cigarette paper inserted between the two sides. Denly batted with composure and application to add exactly 100 to his overnight score as Middlesex amassed their highest total of the season so far and denied Worcestershire a third bowling bonus point while they were at it.Middlesex claimed two wickets in the gloaming after Chris Rogers’ declaration shortly into the evening session but it was the performance of Denly, recruited from Kent over the winter, that stood out. With a draw the likeliest outcome, his performance, as a barometer of how well Middlesex may fare in Division One, was as valuable as the three batting points it helped to secure.Denly was once groomed as an England opener but lost his way after making a handful of one-day appearances in 2009. Seeking a fresh start, he swapped the tranquillity of Canterbury for the mildly grittier urban milieu of St Johns Wood and this innings suggested he may come again at international level, with England not exactly overrun with options as the top of the order. Having the captain, Andrew Strauss, as a team-mate won’t do his chances any harm, either.”It was nice to spend some time out in the middle and get that first hundred under the belt, my first hundred at Lord’s as well, so I’m delighted,” Denly said. “It’s been a while [since being involved with England]. If I’m scoring runs consistently then hopefully they might take a bit of notice but it’s only one knock so far, I’ve just got to focus on doing it week in week out and scoring big hundreds.”As it is, Middlesex are comfortably ensconced in the middle of the standings, while Worcestershire bob alongside Durham and Lancashire, the champions, near the bottom. The latter two were being talked of in title-challenging terms at the start of the season and both will expect their fortunes to improve but Worcestershire, having lost their opening six games last year, are familiar with the art of escapology. That Middlesex didn’t assert even greater supremacy in this match was largely down to Alan Richardson, once of NW8 himself, who claimed his third five-wicket haul of the season to take his overall tally to 24. The game may not have been the biggest show in town, with the FA Cup final taking place at Wembley just a few miles across north London, but then Richardson has never needed the incentive of the spotlight in order to perform. He was also unsentimental about his wicket-taking return.”I’ve got quite a few old clubs,” he said, with wry a smile. “It’s a fantastic place to come back to, the home of cricket, I had five great years here – whether everyone else thought they were great I don’t know but I certainly enjoyed them. To get five wickets is always nice, whatever ground it is.”I think the wicket has got a little bit in it, if anything we bowled pretty poorly yesterday. We’ve given ourselves a bit of a mountain to climb, I don’t think it’s a 327 for seven wicket. So we’ve put ourselves under a bit of pressure.”Despite more capricious weather in the morning, Denly remained unflappable at the crease. He got forward well and was particularly strong driving down the ground though, like all the batsmen, he had one or two uncomfortable moments against Richardson. After a generally sedate knock, punctuated by occasional boundaries, he moved from 86 to 101 from six balls, timing Richard Jones off his pads before dispatching another on drive down the ground to bring the members to their feet. That milestone seemed a long way off after Richardson had taken two in two balls to leave Middlesex on 172 for 5 but Denly combined with first John Simpson and then Gareth Berg to regain the initiative. Berg scratched around like a cooped up tom cat at the start of his innings, was dropped in the gully and rarely looked secure but grubbed his way to 36 out of a partnership of 88 with Denly, as Middlesex took the opportunity either side of a prolonged break for rain to restore some faith in their batting order.Denly pulled Richardson into the stands to bring up the 300 and the declaration came shortly after, as Middlesex seemingly dithered over whether to pursue a fourth batting point or not. Strauss then dropped Michael Klinger on nought, repaying the favour from yesterday. But as the clouds drew in, Worcestershire’s Australian opener was dismissed and Strauss’ could walk off in a sunnier frame of mind.

Australia open to more T20s in Pakistan series

Australia and Pakistan could ask the ICC for permission to stage the longest bilateral Twenty20 international series ever played later this year

Brydon Coverdale13-Jun-2012

Australia and Pakistan could ask the ICC for permission to stage the longest bilateral Twenty20 international series ever played later this year. The two countries are due to meet for a series of five ODIs and three T20s in August, but finding a suitable venue has proven difficult for Pakistan, especially given the extreme heat in the UAE at that time of year.Malaysia is being considered as another potential venue but if the UAE is chosen, the major problem would be starting a 50-over contest in the blistering afternoon sunshine. A solution could be to abandon or reduce the ODI portion of the tour and expand the T20 schedule, which would allow games to start later at night and would also provide both sides with valuable extra preparation ahead of September’s ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. The PCB is believed to have suggested a seven-match T20 series, which has been rejected by the ICC, but a five-game series could yet be proposed. The ICC has capped the amount of matches allowed in a bilateral T20 series at three, and while no international series of more games has ever been staged, national boards are permitted to put forward proposals for longer tours if there are special circumstances. The ICC has already increased the number of T20s a country may play in a World Twenty20 year from 12 to 15, to allow better preparation for the tournament. But an individual series of more than three games would still need ICC approval, and Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland said it was a potential option for the PCB and Cricket Australia to explore for the August series.”Pakistan have had some issues with determining a venue for the series,” Sutherland said. “Part of that perhaps relates to weather issues and challenges with heat if it happens to be played in the UAE. It makes sense as a follow-up to that, if the matches are played there, in order to avoid the heat you reduce the number of one-day internationals you play, and you play Twenty20s [instead].”We haven’t had any formal discussions about that but at some stage it may well be that we need to talk to the ICC about that. There is good reason why the ICC has decided that only a limited number of Twenty20 matches can be played in one particular series. But in the first instance it’s up to Pakistan to determine the format of the series that they think is going to work out. They need a venue first. It may well be we then put a formal proposition to the ICC that in exceptional circumstances it might be an option that they look favourably on.”The ICC’s outgoing chief executive Haroon Lorgat, who was in Melbourne to present Sutherland and Cricket Australia with the ICC ODI shield, would not be drawn on the potential for a long T20 series between Australia and Pakistan. He said the ICC had already provided scope for countries to squeeze more T20s in this year, though not necessarily through longer series.”In a World Twenty20 we have already agreed to extend the 12 maximum to 15,” Lorgat said. “So in this particular year, any member can play 15 T20 internationals.”Australia have played only four T20s this year and their upcoming tour of England consists only of one-day internationals. Pakistan have so far played five T20s in 2012, and they have no more on their schedule besides the Australia series. Australia’s T20 captain, George Bailey, said the more matches his side could play together the better, given the extensive changes to Australia’s short-format side in the past year.”It would certainly be nice to play a couple, if nothing else to settle a team and to really settle on a line-up,” Bailey said. “I’ve got no doubt that whether they’re scheduled or not, once we get over to Sri Lanka and prepare, the preparation will be fine.”Sri Lanka had originally been the likely venue for the Pakistan-Australia series but they withdrew their invitation to host the teams when it became apparent the Sri Lanka Premier League would take place at the same time. Intikhab Alam, the PCB’s director for international operations, has travelled to Kuala Lumpur and the UAE in the past two weeks to assess potential venues for the series.

Goleiros: Weverton, Fernando Prass e Jailson
Laterais: Mayke, Marcos Rocha, Diogo Barbosa e Victor Luis
Zagueiros: Antônio Carlos, Edu Dracena, Gustavo Gómez, Luan, Pedrão e Nico Freire
Volantes: Thiago Santos, Bruno Henrique, Moisés, Jean, Felipe Melo e Gabriel Furtado
Meias: Lucas Lima, Hyoran, Vitinho, Artur e Guerra
Atacantes: Borja, Dudu, Willian, Papagaio e Deyverson

The Ireland XI never recovered from such a terrible start. Andrew White, the Ireland XI captain, managed to stay at the crease for 25 balls, making 16, but he and Stuart Thompson went quickly as the side slumped to 58 for 6 with fewer than five overs remaining.Nigel Jones managed to save Irish blushes by striking three sixes in a 26-ball 41 as he and Rory McCann shared 45 but the total was well below being competitive.Thompson did find two early wickets but Shakib Al Hasan’s unbeaten 37 at a run-a-ball guided the chase and Bangladesh captain Mushifiqur Rahim blasted 40 in 25 balls to get the tourists to the line.

Campeão simbólico do primeiro turno, com 41 pontos, o time somou apenas 11 no returno – é a 12ª melhor campanha.

Sri Lanka won't play safe – Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene said Sri Lanka will not adopt a defensive outlook in the remaining two games against Pakistan as they chase their first Test series win in nearly three years

Mahela Jayawardene: “I play to win.”•AFP

With Sri Lanka 1-0 up in the three-match series against Pakistan going into the second Test, the captain Mahela Jayawardene said his team will not adopt a defensive outlook as they chase their first Test series win in nearly three years. Jayawardene said it is not his style to play for a draw and that it is important to maintain the momentum gained from a comprehensive 209-run win in Galle.”I don’t play cricket like that. I play to win, including charity matches,” Jayawardene said after a practice session at the Sinhalese Sports Club. “I try and influence that into my team as well. Playing safe is not going to win you matches or series. You have to be create that positive atmosphere from ball one. That’s how you develop the culture of winning.”Sri Lanka clicked in all departments in Galle, shutting out Pakistan from the opening session, and building themselves a position from which they had the option of enforcing the follow-on. They have the chance to close out the series at the SSC, where they have not lost a Test since 2004, against Australia. Since then, the hosts have won six games and drawn five.Going by the number of high scores at the ground in recent years, Jayawardene cautioned that the bowlers will have to be at their top to take 20 wickets. “Getting 20 wickets on this is hard work. It’s a great place for a batsman to develop his game, but not so much for the bowlers,” Jayawardene said. “We know Pakistan will come hard at us.”Though nobody in the squad is nursing an injury, Sri Lanka are in a quandary whether to retain their fastest bowler, Nuwan Pradeep, after the chairman of selectors Ashantha de Mel cast doubts on whether Pradeep was fit enough to last consecutive Tests. Either Dilhara Fernando or Thisara Perera will replace him, should Sri Lanka force a change.”It’s not a bad headache to have. We need to think if we need to bring in an experienced bowler (Fernando),” Jayawardene said. “Thisara comes into the fold as well.”Sometimes, the unknown quantity can surprise. A guy who hasn’t played much may come in not overwhelmed by the occasion and have a great game. Those are factors you have to weigh in when you make a decision on the line-up.”Persistent injuries, particularly to the fast bowlers, have prevented Sri Lanka from fielding a settled bowling attack. While the batting line-up has plenty of experience, Jayawardene said there was still work to be done with the bowling.”We are trying to develop a bowling attack that will hunt in a pack. We don’t yet have the experience of a Murali [Muttiah Muralitharan] or a [Chaminda] Vaas,” he said. “We have Rangana Herath who has taken over the mantle after being Murali’s understudy. Unfortunately, [Chanaka] Welegedera is injured.”Jayawardene had said at the start of the series that Sri Lanka’s success would depend on how well his batsmen fared against Pakistan’s bowlers. He said he was pleased with the progress so far, especially after their defeats in the Tests and ODIs in their previous encounter, in the UAE last year.”I’ve seen it mentioned in a lot of places that it’s their bowling versus our batting. We’ve probably won that battle until now. If we put runs on the board we will put their batting under pressure. In the UAE our batting didn’t perform to expectations and that’s why we lost.”
