Scorecard
After a disastrous Australian tour, Pakistan’s confidence will not have been helped as they were overcome by an inexperienced Pakistan A in their warm-up game ahead of the Twenty20 series against England. Abdul Razzaq’s rollicking unbeaten 39 boosted Pakistan to 143 for 8 after they were put in to bat, but well-paced innings from Mohammad Hafeez and Asad Shafiq set up a seven-wicket victory, achieved with three balls to spare.Hafeez, who is captaining Pakistan A, was named Man of the Match for his efforts in this game, which included two wickets for only 21 runs in four overs of tight offspin and a vital 41 in Pakistan A’s chase. Hafeez, who has not played international cricket for more than two years, brought himself on early in Pakistan’s innings and was soon rewarded with Imran Farhat’s wicket.Imran Nazir fell soon after for a pedestrian three runs from 10 balls, and though Khalid Latif and Umar Akmal consolidated with a 33-run partnership, Pakistan struggled to score quickly in the first half of the innings. Latif and Akmal fell in quick succession, and Fawad Alam and Shahid Afridi struggled to get going in their short innings.Shoaib Malik provided some impetus with a rapid 32 before he was run out by substitute fielder Abid Ali as Pakistan slipped to 109 for 7 in the 18th over. Razzaq then showed his extensive experience at the end of the innings with a typically aggressive knock, smashing two fours and three sixes to add 34 for the eighth wicket with Yasir Arafat, who was out off the last ball after contributing just three runs to the partnership.Pakistan A lost Shahzaib Hasan early in their chase, but Hafeez and Shafiq steadied the innings with a 67-run partnership – the highest of the match. Hafeez struck five fours and a six before he was bowled by Arafat, who was impressively economical in his four overs, conceding only 17 runs to go with his wicket.Shafiq was in sight of a maiden twenty20 half-century, having muscled his way to 48 with six fours and a six, but edged Wahab Riaz to Sarfraz Ahmed with 23 still needed in under three overs. Umair Khan and Naeem Anjum, who both made their twenty20 debuts against England Lions last week, were up to the task, however, hitting three fours and a six between them to seal the win in the final over.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Eddie Nketiah news

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah is a priority target for Crystal Palace during the January transfer window.

That’s according to reliable reporter Alan Nixon, and, as to be expected, the update has had a number of Eagles fans talking on social media.

Palace currently have four strikers on the books at Selhurst Park, one of which is Odsonne Edouard, who was brought to the club over the summer.

Another is loanee Jean-Philippe Mateta, but it seems as if Patrick Vieira and Dougie Freedman are still keen on Nketiah following links in the summer.

The 22-year-old is into the final six months of his Emirates deal and has made just three substitute appearances in the Premier League this season. Nketiah has scored five times in three EFL Cup appearances, though.

Palace fans react

@CPFCtransfersHQ shared Nixon’s claim on social media on Monday afternoon.

This is what these Palace supporters had to say in reply, with many not keen to see a move go through and one labelling it as ‘strange’.

Bill Lawry and Garth McKenzie, two greats of the 1960s, will be inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame at the Allan Border Medal on Monday. Bob Lloyd, the selection panel chairman, praised the contributions of both players.”Bill was an outstanding opening batsman and captain of Australia during his 67 Test-match career and has also since then had an on-going and significant role in cricket as an administrator with Cricket Victoria and as a commentator with Channel 9,” Lloyd said. “Graham, or ‘Garth’ McKenzie as he was universally known, almost single-handedly led the Australian attack over a 10-year period and his 246 wickets places him eigth on the list of wickets taken for Australia.”The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame began in 1996 with 10 inductees and 22 more have been included since then. Selectors take into account the players’ status as sporting legends in addition to their outstanding statistical records and inductees must have been retired from international cricket for a minimum of five years.Hall of Fame inductees Fred Spofforth, John Blackham, Victor Trumper, Clarrie Grimmett, Bill Ponsford, Sir Donald Bradman, Bill O’Reilly, Keith Miller, Ray Lindwall, Dennis Lillee, Warwick Armstrong, Neil Harvey, Allan Border, Bill Woodfull, Arthur Morris, Stan McCabe, Greg Chappell, Lindsay Hassett, Ian Chappell, Hugh Trumble, Alan Davidson, Clem Hill, Rod Marsh, Monty Noble, Bob Simpson, Charles Macartney, Richie Benaud, George Giffen, Ian Healy, Steve Waugh, Bill Lawry, Garth McKenzie.

Newcastle can replace Gayle with Morelos

The January transfer window is well underway and Newcastle United are being linked with players left, right and centre at the moment.

Eddie Howe’s squad is in desperate need of strengthening, and deals done this month could go a long way to helping them to remain in the Premier League for at least another season.

They are currently 19th in the table and have only won one league game with half of the campaign gone, highlighting the need for reinforcements.

Time to brutally axe Gayle

CBS Sports recently reported that Leicester, Newcastle and Everton are all interested in signing Morelos from Rangers this month.

By bringing the Colombian to St James’ Park, Howe could brutally axe Dwight Gayle from the club and sell him in the coming weeks. The former Crystal Palace man is reportedly one of the players the Magpies are willing to offload, and the prospective arrival of Morelos could allow them to cash in.

He is under contract until 2024 but has only played 27 minutes of Premier League football this season. This suggests that the £40k-per-week dud is not in Howe’s plans, so signing a replacement in the form of Morelos would mean that they can sell him without worrying about their attacking squad depth.

The Rangers marksman could come in and add plenty of goals to the Magpies. He has proven his quality for the Scottish champions over the years, with 107 goals in 211 games north of the border.

Speaking anonymously to The Athletic previously, an ex-Scottish Premiership defender lauded the striker’s strength, saying: “When he goes to shield the ball it’s so difficult. His body strength and ball control are very good, so he makes it very difficult for you. He is deceptive with his physical attributes, but what I’d say he’s best at is when the ball is played up to him. He lets you think that you can nip in front of him and then his timing to put his body in and spin you is excellent.”

Another player added: “He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space.”

These testimonies highlight what Morelos could bring to Newcastle aside from his goalscoring. He has the physical strength and positional intelligence to cause constant problems for opposition defenders, which means that he could open up space for his teammates even when he is not scoring himself. Coupled with his scoring record, that is why he could be an excellent signing.

The Colombian could therefore be the perfect replacement for Gayle and improve the Magpies’ options at the top end of the pitch. It would then be down to the club to find a new employer for the 32-year-old, whether that comes this month or in the summer.

Everton "considering" Spurs star Dele Alli

Everton have been suggested as a potential destination for Spurs star Dele Alli in this January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Speaking on The Athletic’s The View from The Lane podcast, Jack Pitt-Brooke revealed that the England ace’s name had been linked with a switch to Rafa Benitez’s side this month.

He said: “Spurs had been hoping for a while that Newcastle would want Dele this month, but I gather that’s not the case. It’s been suggested to me that maybe Everton are considering coming in for Dele towards the end of the month, but as far as I’m aware there’s been no movement on that.”

Could revive his career at Everton

The £100k-per-week star has previously been hailed as a “freak of a talent” by former Spurs man Darren Anderton, while Mauricio Pochettino even made some quite incredible comparisons between Alli and the likes of Diego Maradona and Ronaldinho.

He said: “You smell Maradona’s energy, his charisma is amazing. Ronaldinho at Paris Saint-Germain was similar. And it’s similar with Dele. People love him in this way. When you add the charisma to the talent, that’s what makes a special player. When he was scoring goals, kids loved him like he was Ronaldinho.

“Kids feel this charisma, this energy, and with Dele it’s the same; he has this charisma that kids love and follow.”What Alli hasn’t had in recent seasons, especially with Pochettino’s exit, is consistent game-time and perhaps that trust he had with the Argentine. This campaign has seen him play just 657 minutes of Premier League football, featuring heavily under Nuno Espirito Santo to begin the season and then completely dropping out of favour under Antonio Conte. While Everton fans may look to his recent record and consider this a potentially underwhelming signing, his previous history and the fact he’s still only 25, could see him revive his career at Goodison Park.At his absolute best, Alli is a goal-scoring midfielder who can win games, and his still impressive record of 67 goals and 61 assists in 269 games for Spurs is a testament to that.If the Toffees do land him later this January, then it could be an exciting one for fans.Meanwhile, Benitez could form a deadly duo with this Serie A star…

Big PictureWest Indies and Zimbabwe begin a fresh phase in international cricket under newly-appointed coaches, though the mood is more upbeat in the tourists’ camp. While West Indies will expect to kick start a season of favourable results after a winless tour of Australia, Zimbabwe will have their eyes set on a goal far more significant – a return to Test cricket after their self-imposed exile in 2006.Alan Butcher is expected to join his team midway through the tour but Zimbabwe will be, in the interim, under the supervision of current coach Walter Chawaguta and former captain Dave Houghton, who has targeted a return to the five-day format before the end of this year. Heath Streak will be supporting him as bowling coach, and Grant Flower begins his duty as batting coach in October. The return of distinguished former players in coaching roles to boost the team, a refurbished domestic structure based on five regional franchises to better administer first-class cricket, the organisation of a domestic Twenty20 league and the participation of a Zimbabwe XI in the Intercontinental Cup – these are all measures indicating a committed plan to facilitate Zimbabwe’s transition to the cricketing mainstream. However, Zimbabwe’s exposure to limited-overs cricket in the recent past has been largely confined to playing Bangladesh – they’ve won four and lost ten ODIs against them since 2009 – and Kenya. They haven’t played a Twenty20 international since October 2008. To realise their goal, they need to challenge superior teams and a demoralised West Indies, who, among other disappointments, were also beaten comprehensively in the two Twenty20 internationals against Australia, are a good place to start.Form GuideZimbabwe: WLTLL (All before 2009)
West Indies: LLWLW
Watch out forAdrian Barath is back in the West Indies squad and will look to build on the bright start he’s had to his international career as an explosive opener. In the absence of Chris Gayle for Sunday’s game, he’ll take the lead at the top of the order.Barath’s counterpart in the opening slot, Hamilton Masakadza enjoyed a prolific 2009 with 1087 runs at 43.48, including three centuries. He was also the highest run-getter in the Stanbic Cup, Zimbabwe’s domestic Twenty20 tournament. Along with Tatenda Taibu, who launched his tour of West Indies with a match-winning century against UWI Vice Chancellor’s XI, Masakadza is Zimbabwe’s most relied-on batsman.Team newsWest Indies are boosted by the return of several injured players: Barath (hamstring), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (thumb), Sulieman Benn (knee) and Darren Bravo (shoulder). Allrounder Dave Bernard jnr and batsman Andre Fletcher have also been recalled.West Indies (probable) – 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Andre Fletcher, 3 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Denesh Ramdin (capt and wk), 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Dwayne Smith, 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Sulieman Benn, 11 Nikita MillerZimbabwe prevailed by five runs in their 50-over tour match, thanks to Taibu and a combined bowling effort, with the trio of Chris Mpofu, Kyle Jarvis and Elton Chigumbura bagged two wickets each.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Charles Coventry, 4 Tatenda Taibu, 5 Stuart Matsikenyeri, 6 Greg Lamb, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Timycen Maruma, 9 Shingirai Masakadza, 10 Kyle Jarvis, 11 Chris Mpofu.Stats and triviaZimbabwe have never beaten West Indies in a bilateral ODI series. They’ve never played West Indies in a Twenty20 international and have won just two out of seven games. Hamilton Masakadza was the fourth-highest run-getter in 2009 in ODIs, behind MS Dhoni, Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey. Quotes”We have got to start winning matches and our goal is to get back into Test cricket in a year-and-a-half. The guys are working very hard at this, and this tour is very important in this regard.”
“That series is gone. We are looking to the future. We have a new coach who is looking to great things from us.”
