Van Bronckhorst must axe Morelos vs Lyon

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Glasgow Rangers head into Thursday evening’s Europa League tie safe in the knowledge that they have already secured a place for the Ibrox side in the knockout stages of the competition.

As such, with nothing at stake aside from pride, the fixture against Olympique Lyonnais presents the 46-year-old Gers manager with a perfect opportunity to heavily rotate his side, allowing a number of his peripheral squad members some much-needed game time.

Subsequently, this means that a plethora of Rangers’ regular starters must make way, with centre-forward Alfredo Morelos appearing to be a prime candidate for the chop on Thursday evening.

Van Bronckhorst must axe Morelos

Since making the move to Ibrox back in 2017, Morelos has gone on to become an incredibly important part of the Rangers first-team setup, scoring a highly impressive 104 goals and registering 46 assists over his 207 appearances for the club.

This season has been no different, with the £10.8m-rated striker having already bagged five goals, provided three assists and created two big chances over his 14 Premiership appearances, as well as taking an average of 4.1 shots – the highest number of any player in the top flight – and making 1.6 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the 25-year-old who Willy Irwin dubbed an “incredible” talent average a SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as Gers’ sixth-best performer in the league.

It has been a similar case over the Colombia international’s five outings in the Europa League this term, with the £33k-per-week hitman notching two goals and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.16, ranking him as his side’s second-best player in Europe.

However, it is exactly because of Morelos’ fine form that Van Bronckhorst must ruthlessly axe the centre-forward against Lyon.

With the striker being just one yellow card away from suspension in the Europa League, it is not worth running the risk of fielding the player who the Dutch manager claimed can always “create danger” in the dead rubber on Thursday, as he could subsequently miss the much more important first-leg of Rangers’ knockout tie next February.

'Younis and I go a long way as friends' – Afridi

Pakistan’s ODI vice-captain Shahid Afridi has quashed rumours about an ongoing rift with captain Younis Khan

Pakistan’s ODI vice-captain Shahid Afridi has quashed rumours about an ongoing rift with captain Younis Khan, and believes Younis is the ideal man to lead the team.”I am fed up of the thousand and one stories doing the rounds about me and Younis not getting along or me playing in the hands of a certain lobby, my lust for captaincy and the like,” he told , the Pakistan daily. “I take this opportunity to clarify once and for all that Younis and I go a long way as friends, almost 15 years, and are mature enough to discuss and sort out any problem under the sun in an amicable way.”We won the World Twenty20 in June this year under Younis’ leadership and there’s no reason why I should not back him for leading the team and the country to more such laurels in the future.”A mountain was made out of a molehill by some quarters about my meeting with the PCB chief earlier this month, which, centered around the Twenty20 planning and not captaincy. But I am quite used to such rumours of discord or leadership difference which surface everytime Pakistan lose a key match or a tournament. I am not unfazed by them anymore.”Afridi, who was appointed Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain after Younis retired from the shortest format after the World Twenty20, said he was not aware of any lobby working to remove Younis as captain, but advised that the problems should be sorted out in a mature manner.”When so many people with varying temperaments are thrown together for several weeks or months on a tour, things of course cannot always be trouble-free,” Afridi said “But cricket is through and through a team game, more than any other sports perhaps. I feel the players, the skipper and the team management should accommodate each other on all fronts to make it a success on the field.”Having completed 13 international years in the game, Afridi said the experience had taught him to handle things better, both personally and professionally. “I have come to realise that no one is bigger than the game and holding grudges will not do anyone any good. At the end of the day, only your performance for the country matters, difference of opinion should not dictate your game, never.”Afridi said the team was looking to avenge the Champions Trophy semi-final defeat against New Zealand, in the upcoming limited-overs series in the UAE. “We will not be taking them lightly but one thing I can tell you with confidence; we are definitely better prepared for them this time,” Afridi said. “So bring on the Vettoris, the Bonds, the Kyle Mills. We are ready for you.”About his future plans as Twenty20 captain, Afridi said he had around 25 or 30 players in mind, who could form the nucleus for the next year’s World Twenty20 in West Indies. “I have certain ideas about grooming some of the younger players and building a solid team for 2010.”

Leeds eyeing Penarol’s Agustin Alvarez

Leeds United have entered the race to sign Penarol striker Agustin Alvarez as the transfer competition hots up for the Uruguayan starlet.

What’s the story?

According to La República (via Sport Witness), Marcelo Bielsa’s side are battling Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg for the 20-year-old’s signature, although a number of clubs across Europe are also said to be in the running.

The report added that Leeds, as well as Serie A outfit Fiorentina, could make a bid for him during the January transfer window.

Would be an exciting signing for Leeds

With Patrick Bamford remaining Leeds’ only senior centre-forward, the Whites could desperately do with some strength in depth up front.

In a scouting report done by HUDL, they revealed of Alvarez: “El Canario is much more than purely a penalty box poacher. While he is clearly a striker who benefits from getting good service into the area, he can also fashion and finish chances for himself.

“Another of Alvarez’s best qualities is his heading. At 1.80m, he may not be the tallest but has shown himself to have a great aerial ability, timing and a fantastic leap. His strength and physicality also make him very adept with his back to goal, while his time at youth level as a midfielder means he is also good at dropping deep to link the play too.”

Indeed, North American football commentator Maximiliano Bretos even declared that Alvarez “has a little Luiz Suarez about him”.

Despite his youth, he has been in electric form for one of Uruguay’s biggest clubs and has been particularly impressive in the Copa Sudamericana, South American football’s second-most prestigious club competition. In that tournament, he has bagged ten goals and provided another two assists in just 14 games.

That kind of all-action energy makes the 20-year-old a perfect fit for Bielsa and Leeds.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa should give this academy starlet a chance…

AVFC handed big injury boost

Following on from their 2-0 win over Norwich City at Carrow Road in midweek, Aston Villa are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Burnley for their latest Premier League outing.

With this in mind, it seems as though Villa have been handed a potential injury boost ahead of their showdown against Sean Dyche’s side which will surely have Villa manager Steven Gerrard thrilled.

What’s the news?

According to the Birmingham Mail, after picking up knocks in midweek against Norwich, Villa’s quartet of Matty Cash, Emi Buendia, Ezri Konsa and Ashley Young are all “expected to be fine come kick-off this weekend,” which would be a big boost for the Villans and their hopes of securing three points.

With Gerrard set to hold his pre-Burnley press conference due this afternoon, it’ll be a big relief for the Villa fans if he confirms this claim that Cash, Buendia, Konsa and Young will be fit enough to be available for tomorrow’s game.

Villa were without Jed Steer, Anwar El Ghazi, Morgan Sanson, Keinan Davis and Marvelous Nakamba for the Norwich game. The latter has picked up a serious knee injury that could keep him out of action for the rest of the season, so it’s fair to say Gerrard and the fans are due a bit of good news.

Having the likes of Cash, Buendia, Konsa and Young fit enough to play against Burnley will be a big positive for Gerrard and Villa heading into Saturday’s match.

Given how the quartet have all played in at least 12 of Villa’s 17 Premier League games so far this season with Cash being the only player to have started all 17 of them, it’s safe to say that they are important players for Villa and Gerrard to call on.

Cash and Konsa are a crucial part of Villa’s defence while Buendia can do his bit going forward with one goal and two assists under his belt in the league, and Young can be deployed in either a defensive or attacking role given his versatility, which effectively adds to the gaffer’s depth and choices in multiple positions.

Diego Cavalieri avalia situação do Fluminense: 'Para nós, tudo é decisão'

O objetivo do time é reencontrar a vitória no Maracanã.

Ponting chases umpire views on reviews

Ricky Ponting was the man who asked for the reviews that preceded Mark Benson’s exit from the Adelaide Test

Ricky Ponting was the man who asked for the reviews that preceded Mark Benson’s exit from the Adelaide Test, and after the match finished he said he would ask the remaining officials for their thoughts on the system. Benson was expected to announce his retirement on Tuesday after returning to England, having officiated for only the first day of the Test. The ICC has denied that his departure was directly caused by his decisions being queried, including one caught-behind appeal that Ponting was convinced was out and was overturned by the third umpire Asad Rauf. Ponting said he still supported the review system and was keen to speak to Rauf and Ian Gould following the controversy.”The thing I want to do is to have a chat with the umpires and see what their views and opinions are on the whole system,” Ponting said. “That’s the important thing. Sometimes important people can be overlooked in some of these rule-changing decisions that are brought in. I’m going to speak to the umpires who were officiating in this game tonight and get their opinions on it all.”That’s what I want to find out from them. I want to see how they are going with it all. It’s one thing for the players to accept these changes and technology, but it’s another thing from the umpires. I want to get the overall feeling from them as to how they think it’s going.”Despite wasting both his reviews early in West Indies’ second innings and being left to rue his hastiness later on, Ponting said the system could still have a positive effect on Test cricket. However, he said it would take some time to get used to reviewing on-field decisions, just as it had been an ongoing learning process dealing with one-day changes like Powerplays.”Ideally with a lot of those rule changes and things that we’ve brought into 50-over cricket over the last couple of years you’d like to have trialled them elsewhere,” he said. “I think there’s still some refinement that can be done with the technology that’s used [in reviews].”That’s the big thing with it all. If you’re going to go into something like this you’ve got to go in 100% and use whatever you can to make the system work its best. We’re all still coming to terms with it and the more we play with it and learn about it and experience it the more we’ll probably appreciate it.”One man who doesn’t appreciate the system is the West Indies captain Chris Gayle. He was scathing of the review process after the Gabba Test, and remained unconvinced following the Adelaide draw. “I still stand firm,” Gayle said. “It’s just complicated.”
