Celtic have just repeated their John McGinn howler

2018 was an exciting year for Celtic and everyone associated with the Hoops and Parkhead.

The Bhoys wrapped up the treble as Brendan Rodgers led his side to a Premiership crown and cup double.

Celtic even reached the group stages of the Champions League, an achievement that’s felt incredibly far-fetched over the last few seasons.

Yet, that year was also one for Peter Lawwell to forget in the transfer window. That’s because the Glaswegian side missed out on a player who’s now one of the first names on the team sheet for the national side.

Coincidentally, he’s also now a regular in the Premier League.

The man in question is a certain John McGinn. The central midfielder was at Hibernian when Celtic tried no fewer than three times to sign from the Edinburgh club.

However, he eventually left for Aston Villa in a deal worth a measly £2m. Speaking after that, McGinn revealed the reasons:

“It was important to weigh up everything and not just go with my heart because I had basically made up my mind I wanted to join Celtic.”

The midfielder added: “But I also had to weigh up in my mind how strong Celtic’s midfield had been for a long time.

“I remember speaking to Brendan Rodgers and he said the important thing I would take from it was I would play games. But Steve Bruce said I would play every game.”

Sadly, it looks as though the club’s new CEO, Dominic McKay, has just repeated that mistake.

Of course, the chief executive officer has to be given praise for his work in the market. Celtic brought in 12 new first-team players over the summer, some of which have already taken to the Premiership like a duck to water; Kyogo Furuhashi and Liel Abada are the primary suspects.

Yet, in this instance, he has made a mistake. Celtic had been scouting a certain Ali McCann long before McKay arrived in Glasgow but on transfer deadline day, they ignored a swoop which allowed him to move to England instead.

It wasn’t a Premier League side that came calling as they did for McGinn, but perhaps more frustratingly it was a club in the second tier.

Preston North End ended up landing the Northern Irishman in the final hours for just £1m.

Similarly to McGinn, he is an all-action midfielder, one that surely would have become an instant name on the team sheet at Paradise.

Last term, the former St Johnstone man was a force going forward and from a defensive point of view. He won 1.7 aerial duels per game and was also victorious in 2.7 tackles a match.

Furthermore, McCann made 1.5 interceptions and also registered 0.8 key passes. For the price tag touted, it’s strange that Celtic decided to ignore him.

This was a golden opportunity on deadline day.

Selection-meeting leaks 'disgusting' – Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has described as “disgusting and disrespectful” the fact that matters discussed in selection meetings are leaked and reported in the media. India’s selectors chose Irfan Pathan over RP Singh for the next two ODIs against England, and reports of a serious disagreement over the choice cast a cloud over India’s preparations for the fourth ODI against England in Bangalore.”I don’t know where the report came from. What happens inside a meeting where the selectors, the captain and the coaches are there, when it comes out it is disgusting and disrespectful,” Dhoni said, after India’s training session at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. “Things like this should not be happening. I’m not saying something happened at the meeting, but over the years we have seen things being leaked from meetings.”The Kolkata-based Anandabazar Patrika reported on Saturday that Dhoni favoured the inclusion of RP in the squad for the next two ODIs, and offered to step down when the selectors insisted on replacing him with Pathan. The report said Shashank Manohar, the board president, had been informed of the argument.BCCI officials, however, have denied the report. “I don’t talk about selection meetings. In any case it is all rubbish,” N Srinivisan, the board secretary, told Cricinfo.”This is the pinnacle of the sport. We are selecting 15 guys for the Indian team,” said Dhoni. “There will be debates inside, and that information should not be put out in the media. If it is meant to come out, then I can say we might as well have the whole meeting telecast live on television. Nobody knows what was discussed except the eight guys in the meeting. And only they know whether it’s the truth or not.”Dhoni said he did not speak to the BCCI because he felt it was not important. In his view, matters of selection should be made public only by the BCCI, the chairman of selectors, or one of the individuals on the selection panel. “We have an important match coming up, and we chose instead to focus on that match,” he said. “This is a selection thing and personally I don’t discuss anything outside. To some extent it does distract us. The good part is that we trust each other – every player in the team trusts the other.”Dhoni pledged his support to both RP and Pathan, who he said had faith in his abilities. “There might be a scenario where all of a sudden we might want to get in touch with RP Singh and Irfan Pathan. And you don’t want RP to feel that I will go out of the way and stand and defend him and Irfan should not feel I don’t want him in the team. I will stand and defend both these players and both of them trust me. My talks with them went off well.””We do not have players in this team with outstanding talent, which can win every game. But as a team we are outstanding. So for us the mantra is being a team, and these things will not break the trust we have in each other. It’s important for us to be a team.”

What's the story, grumpy Vettori?

Plays of the third day between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide

A day to forget for Symonds …
Things have a habit of going wrong when you’re struggling, as Matthew Hayden discovered when he was run out on the second day. On the third morning fortune also frowned upon his good mate Andrew Symonds, who is trying to re-establish his Test career after being stood down from the side for two months. Following his bar-room incident in Brisbane, Symonds is under such an intense spotlight that even news of him missing a Queensland training session in October was splashed over the Sunday papers this morning. There were also reports that the man who photographed Symonds in the Normanby Hotel told Cricket Australia Symonds had elbowed him in the jaw, but the complaint came after the allrounder had been cleared of any wrongdoing. The day only got worse for Symonds when the umpire Billy Doctrove gave him out caught behind for a duck despite the ball appearing to miss the bat…. and for Vettori
When your team looks like spending an entire day in the field, every opportunity must be taken. And when you drop a catch off the captain, expect some expletives to come flying your way. As clean-cut as Daniel Vettori is, even he couldn’t help a few frustrated mutterings when Daniel Flynn put down the simplest of catches at mid-on when Brad Haddin was on 72. Vettori had already seen several of his deliveries bounce off pads and trickle in the direction of the stumps, never hitting them. Streaky shots came off and the luck was with Australia. But any chance of Vettori slamming his fielders after play ended when he dropped a straightforward chance off his own bowling off Brett Lee. It was Vettori’s 51st over of the innings, so it’s understandable that his attention might have been drifting. The nervous 99
Being run out on 99 is perhaps the most gut-wrenching experience for a batsman and for a fleeting moment it looked like that fate might await Michael Clarke. He pushed Jesse Ryder to midwicket and took off for a single but a mid-pitch stutter left him scrambling to complete the run. Fortunately for Clarke, Peter Fulton’s throw was a long way wide of the stumps and Clarke brought up his fourth Test century of the year.Bouncing Brett
Iain O’Brien copped a few bouncers while batting on the second day and he was keen to return the favour when Australia’s lower order was at the crease. A couple of short balls to Lee slid down the leg side but O’Brien was soon on target, collecting Lee on the arm-guard with a delivery that ran away for four leg-byes. Lee was peppered with another couple of bumpers in O’Brien’s next over and was struck on the arm and the back. The New Zealander stared down Lee and was clearly enjoying the tete-a-tete, which ended favourably for O’Brien when Lee edged to first slip for 19.

Spurs gifted possible Son boost

Taking to Twitter, South Korean reporter Sungmo Lee has shared what he knows in an injury update on Tottenham Hotspur superstar Son Heung-min.

The Lowdown: Son suffers knock…

After a torrid international break for Spurs, it is now time to return to Hotspur Way for damage control as both supporters and manager Nuno Espirito Santo pray for the best.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Among the players to be shrouded by fitness concerns is superstar forward Son, who picked up niggling calf concerns in training for his country on Monday (Korean Football Association via Sky Sports).

Oliver Skipp, Ryan Sessegnon and Steven Bergwijn are other players who Spurs could be without for the Crystal Palace clash this Saturday depending on developments, while Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez are training in Croatia following their South American fiascos (Dan Kilpatrick).

Lee has now shared an update on Son, and there could be a hint of good news for Tottenham.

The Latest: Lee shares Son update…

Taking to Twitter, the journalist has shared a three-word message from one of his sources despite there being no official update from the KFA on Son’s injury.

Indeed, in what could be a boost for Nuno and Tottenham, Lee has heard ‘it’s not serious’, but whether the 29-year-old can play against Crystal Palace this weekend is still a doubt.

The reporter added that Son looked ‘OK’ at the airport for his flight back to north London.

The Verdict: Fingers crossed…

Son’s injury not being a serious one would certainly come as a massive boost for Spurs and Nuno in particular.

The Portuguese head coach has started life brilliantly at Tottenham, enjoying a 100% winning run over his first three Premier League matches.

Nuno will want to continue that momentum and it’s safe to say that Spurs’ 2020/21 PFA Premier League Team of the Year member will be a huge part of it.

Karnataka boosted by Dravid's return

Based on the evidence of the two games played this season, by Mumbai, the pitch has something for everyone, which might make it an enticing contest

There is an interesting fact about Rahul Dravid playing the quarter-final clash against Saurasthra from Friday: the game will be his first first-class match at the Brabourne Stadium. Dravid, who flew in to Mumbai from Mohali to join the squad previous evening, will be the main attraction, and his presence is likely to tilt the scales heavily in favour of Karnataka.Dravid might start with a few nerves, but his convincing return to form in Mohali against England where he scored a patient century, will be a definite advantage for Robin Uthappa’s team, which does not feature a single batsman who has crossed the 500-run mark this season. Even Uthappa, appointed the captain this year, has not been able to convert the starts, though he is the team’s highest run-maker with 455 runs including two centuries in the first three games. Probably the most reliable batsman in the side is B Akhil, an allrounder, who notched up a century and two half-centuries in the three games he played. The inconsistency of their batting order made Dravid’s return imminent even if it was close on the heels of the England Test series. “It was on the team’s request I came because it is a crucial game,” Dravid said after a light training session in the morning. Dravid had already made his presence felt in the two games he played, against Andhra and Baroda, as he rebuilt the innings after top-order collapses with two fifties. Karnataka won both the games.Uthappa was happy to have Dravid in the line-up, but pointed out Karnataka was confident even in his absence. “Rahul makes a difference, but it doesn’t boost the side,” Uthappa said. One performer who boosted Karnataka’s spirits, and is likely to play once again a winning hand, is Sunil Joshi. Probably the oldest player in the tournament, Joshi celebrated his 100th first-class match for Karnataka with 11 wickets in the final league match, against Maharashtra. His experience and the bounce on offer on the CCI pitch will be twin factors that might pose some tricky questions for the Saurashtra batsmen.Based on the evidence of the two games played this season, by Mumbai, the pitch has something for everyone, which might make it an enticing contest especially with Uthappa keen to avenge the close defeat Saurashtra inflicted on them last season. “We want to settle scores after the three-run defeat even if we had taken the first-innings lead the previous season [2006-07],” Uthappa said.Saurashtra have fought hard to make it to the knockouts for the second straight year after qualifying to the Super League three years ago. This time they got off to a false start after being forced to follow-on against Gujarat, a game they lost by an innings and 227 runs as they failed against the pace and spin of Siddharth Trivedi and Mohnish Parmar. Then, going into their final league game, against Hyderabad, they were in a must-win situation as Delhi were hot on their trail to qualify as the third team from Group A. But they got off to a terrible start, folding easily for 133 having elected to bat. But Ravindra Jadeja, probably their best player at the moment, picked a seven-wicket haul in the final innings to seal Saurashtra’s place in the last eight.Jadeja, who prospered with his handy cameos for Rajasthan Royals during the IPL, also shared the record partnership for the fifth-wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara, the team’s run machine and third on the leading scorers’ list this year, against Orissa as Saurashtra bounced back after the first-round loss. Jadeja, who bowls left-arm spin, is also the team’s leading wicket-taker with a tally of 30 wickets and just like Joshi has shown a penchant to excel in pressure situations.Pujara has been the backbone of Saurashtra’s batting as whenever he has scored big Saurashtra have been successful. He has knowledge of the local conditions having played for Indian Oil Corporation in the local corporate league and will be the key wicket Karanataka’s bowlers will be hungry for. This is the first instance both teams are playing outside home turf which will only add to the allure of the contest. Uthappa said the “consistent” nature of the pitch will provide an even game while Dravid felt it was beneficial for the players that the game was happening at a neutral venue. “Neutral venue is an interesting idea and should not be dismissed without fair trial. Lot of people have criticised pitches across the country but this is an opportunity to correct the faults”, Dravid said, implying there would be no pressure from either team on the nature of the pitch.Teams:
Karnataka (probable) Robin Uthappa (capt), KB Pawan, CM Gautam, Rahul Dravid, C Raghu, Thilak Naidu (wk), B Akhil, Sunil Joshi, R Vinay Kumar, KP Appanna/Sunil Raju, NC Aiyappa.Saurashtra (probable) Jaydev Shah (capt), Bhushan Chouhan, Chirag Pathak, Sitanshu Kotak, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, Sagar Jogiyani (wk), Rakesh Dhruv, Sandeep Jobanputra, Kamlesh Makvana, Balkrishna Jadeja
