With a new manager in place at Everton, pre-season training underway and the summer’s major tournaments done and dusted, the Toffees can finally start making some inroads in the transfer market.

At the moment, Rafa Benitez is yet to conclude any meaningful business so he needs to get his skates on.

What’s the word?

One player Everton have considered a move for this summer is Ben White.

The Brighton defender was part of the England squad for the European Championships but Gareth Southgate didn’t reward him with any minutes.

White has attracted the interest of Arsenal with the Gunners still the frontrunners to sign him.

Everton entered the race a few weeks ago and were willing to put £55m on the table in various instalments.

Ian McGarry of the Transfer Window podcast issued an update on the 23-year-old’s situation this week. He commented (via the Sport Review):

“We’ve been discussing for several podcasts the future of Ben White with regards to a potential move to Arsenal.

“We’ve also reported exclusively that there is interest from Chelsea and Everton, who are playing a waiting game to see if Arsenal realise the valuation that Brighton feel is correct for their 23-year-old centre-back and then perhaps will try and gazump Arsenal by offering more money.”

Supporters should be delighted

If the idea of signing White doesn’t generate excitement among supporters then beating one of the Premier League’s big six to a player would surely thrill the Goodison Park faithful.

This is a huge season for Everton and as always, the goal is to secure European football.

With a vastly experienced coach in Benitez at the helm, there are reasons to believe they could get close but the arrival of White would only help them in their assignment.

The centre-back only has a year of Premier League experience under his belt but he looks set for an incredibly vibrant future right at the top of the game.

White developed tremendously well at Leeds United during a loan spell in the Championship throughout 2019/20, being named in the second tier’s Team of the Season. Since then, he’s taken to the top-flight like a duck to water.

He completed over 83% of his passes, proving he has the ability to transition play and won an impressive 1.7 interceptions per match.

Everton’s defence struggled towards the back end of the season, eventually shipping five to Manchester City on the final day.

Therefore, their first port of call this summer must be strengthening the defence. White is a centre-back who has all of the qualities necessary to become a mainstay at Goodison Park.

He is young, has plenty of re-sale value and is already an England international.

Consequently, supporters should be enthralled by the idea of Benitez bringing him to Merseyside.

Newcastle United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dion Sanderson, with Sheffield United now lining up a bid for his services [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Newcastle United get set for 2021/22

Moving towards 2021/22, many Magpies supporters will be intrigued to see how manager Steve Bruce goes about improving on their 12th placed finish last term considering the awkward state of limbo surrounding the takeover.

Though they haven’t dipped their toes into the transfer market waters as of yet, the Toon have been linked with moves for the likes of Sanderson and Ozan Kabak in recent days.

However, it appears they are facing an uphill battle to acquire the 21-year-old as more and more interest is drawn to his services.

The Latest: Sheffield United set to rival Newcastle and Sunderland for Sanders0n

Sheffield United are said to be readying an offer to lure the youngster away from Molineux, revealed by a Football Insider recruitment source.

Newcastle United have been interested in Sanderson as far back as last month alongside rivals Sunderland, and saw a £1.5 million bid rejected by his current employers for his signature.

Intriguingly, the Blades are willing to attempt to bring the 6 foot 1 ace on a loan deal if a permanent deal cannot be achieved, perhaps giving them the upper edge in negotiations if Wolves want to pursue a temporary switch.

The Verdict: Would be a bitter blow for Newcastle United

Predominantly used as a central defender, Sanderson’s concentration and awareness to dangerous situations at such a young age have catapulted him to be a sought-after commodity this summer.

In 2020/21, the Wolverhampton-born stopper made 27 appearances on loan at Sunderland, registering one goal [Transfermarkt].

Demonstrating his domineering presence at the back, Sanderson won 2.3 aerial duels on average per game across the campaign [WhoScored]. Sniffing out perilous situations was his forte, making around 2.7 clearances per match within this timeframe [WhoScored].

Looking ahead to the forthcoming campaign, the Magpies should be looking to gazump Sheffield United to sign Sanderson before it’s too late, as missing out on a promising young talent for what seems a relatively small fee could be a huge blow.

Richard Walsh10-Jul-2002Somerset gained their first win in Second XI competition when they beat Gloucestershire at the County Ground in Taunton yesterday.Heavy rain in the morning prevented the match starting until 3pm, and when it did the innings were reduced to 28 overs per side.Batting first the visitors made a brisk start and appeared to be getting away, until they were reined back by a fine spell of bowling from off spinner Wes Durston.By the end of their innings Gloucestershire had scored 176 for 7, with Durston ending with 2 for 21 from his 6 overs.In reply Somerset made a sound start, but fell behind the rate and chasing 8 runs an over.Once again it was Wes Durston who came to the rescue hitting 17 from the 27th over, to help to guide his team home to a five wicket victory, that was achieved with just two balls remaining.Wes ended unbeaten on 66, which he scored from 35 balls, and which included 3×6’s and 5×4’s.Somerset entertain Gloucestershire again today at the County Ground in a 3 day championship match.

Com um clássico pela frente no próximo domingo, o Flamengo parece ter encerrado o período de testes no Campeonato Carioca.De acordo com dados do Footstats, 29 jogadores foram utilizados pelo técnico Zé Ricardo no Estadual. O treinador usou os reservas em várias ocasiões, promovendo o popular “rodízio” do elenco. O balanço do rendimento dos atletas é majoritariamente positivo. No entanto, alguns suplentes deixaram a desejar.

Na defesa, o goleiro Thiago não chegou a ser muito exigido, mas deixou uma boa impressão. Ele é o reserva imediato de Muralha e vem sendo observado pela comissão técnica. Após a saída de Paulo Victor, o Flamengo analisava a possibilidade de contratar um arqueiro experiente. Os laterais Renê e Rodinei foram discretos e ainda estão longe de lutarem por vagas no time titular. Vizeu e Damião se alternaram na condição de substitutos de Guerrero. O primeiro fez dois gols neste Estadual, enquanto o mais experiente fez quatro. Berrío mostrou certas limitações técnicas, entretanto foi útil. Gabriel, por sua vez, foi testado numa nova função, como meia de criação. Cirino, que esteve perto de sair, anda em baixa. Por fim, Cafu aproveitou as duas chances que teve e deu duas assistências.

ZÉ DESTACA VALOR DE GAROTOS

O técnico Zé Ricardo lembra da importância dos garotos da base. Em alguns jogos, todo o banco de reservas do Flamengo foi formado por eles.

– Um dos objetivos nossos no Flamengo, não só do Zé, é prospectar esses meninos um pouco mais. É uma tendência natural. A cada ano que passa, o Flamengo usa mais a sua base. Não seria coerente não usá-los. Eles têm que merecer estar na condição e vai depender da condição deles. Se estiverem merecendo, vão ter (oportunidades). Precisamos proporcionar chances. São sete ou oito meninos, é difícil colocar todos. Mas vamos dar chances na medida do possível – disse.

RESERVAS AGRADECEM POR OPORTUNIDADES

O lateral-direito Rodinei mostrou-se agradecido a Zé Ricardo pelas chances no Campeonato Carioca. Ele lembrou que os reservas devem ter novas oportunidades em breve.

KSCA’s openers – KS Ponnappa and Barrington Rowland – played out an over before stumps, making four runs in the process.
