Bergwijn emerges as Ajax transfer target

Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has emerged as a transfer target for Dutch side Ajax according to a recent report from The Daily Mail as they prepare for the upcoming 2021/22 campaign.

THE LOWDOWN: BERGWIJN’S FUTURE LOOKS BLEAK….

Bergwijn has found regular game-time in the Spurs first team hard to come by since moving from PSV Eindhoven nearly 18 months ago, and that is likely to be frustrating for the 23-year-old.

He was once labelled as ‘very good’ by Noel Whelan in an interview with Football Insider, but that verdict doesn’t seem to have changed his fortunes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in recent months.

The Spurs winger made 21 league appearances for Spurs last season, although just 13 of those were starts under the management of both Jose Mourinho and Ryan Mason at different stages in the campaign.

THE LATEST: HE LOOKS SET TO DEPART, BUT NOT ON THE CHEAP….

The Daily Mail have reported that Ajax are looking to offer Bergwijn ‘an escape route’ out of Spurs this summer, although the Premier League side aren’t prepared to let the winger depart on the cheap.

The north Londoners will demand a fee of £27m for the 23-year-old’s services, and it remains to be seen as to whether the Dutch champions will match that valuation anytime soon.

Bergwijn ‘looks set to leave’ Tottenham this summer, having found regular minutes hard to come by since signing from PSV back in 2020.

THE VERDICT: IT’S NOT A SURPRISE, BUT THE TIMING WOULD BE STRANGE…

It wouldn’t come as much of a surprise to see Spurs look at potentially cashing in on the £73,000-per-week winger this summer, as he hasn’t been a regular in their starting XI in recent months.

He has impressed in flashes whenever he’s been involved – that debut goal against Manchester City springs to mind – but with only three further goals to his name since then, he’s unlikely to be in front of the likes of Son Heung-min heading into the new Premier League season, so it might be best for him to move on in the near future.

If Spurs can get a sizeable fee for his services, they could potentially reinvest those funds in other areas of the squad as they look to strengthen ahead of the new league campaign, which is set to get underway in August.

However, with no permanent manager in place as of yet at Spurs, it would be a surprise to see them sell any players before a new boss is in place, as the new manager might yet decide to give Bergwijn a few more chances to prove his worth.

In other news, Paul Robinson doesn’t want one exit-linked player to leave Tottenham.

Celtic: Burnley offer Thomas Robert trial

Burnley have offered Celtic target Thomas Robert a Turf Moor trial, according to The Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Robert’s Lennoxtown trial

The 20-year-old, son of former Newcastle ace Lauren, is currently contracted to League One side Airdrieonians.

Robert, who can play as a left or right-winger, has 12 months left on his contract and had a trial with the Hoops in recent months.

Airdrie boss Ian Murray confirmed Robert’s Lennoxtown stint back in March, claiming it was a successful time training with the Hoops.

It now seems as if Celtic have competition when it comes to signing the Frenchman, though, following The Daily Record’s recent report.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-8/” title=”Celtic updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Burnley interest

The Daily Record claim that the Clarets scouted Robert last season and were left impressed.

Robert, who has scored four times and registered three assists for his current employers, is now set for a two-week trial with Sean Dyche’s side.

Various English clubs also watched the youngster during the previous campaign but his trial in Lancashire could lead to a permanent transfer.

The Verdict: Celtic’s off-field rebuild to cost them?

It seems as if the Hoops may have missed the boat when it comes to signing Robert.

Reports back in March suggested that Celtic wouldn’t make a decision on whether or not to sign Robert until a director of football and manager were in place.

As we know, they now have Ange Postecoglou in as manager but are still yet to bring in a DoF, with Martin O’Neill the latest man to be linked with the newly-created role.

O’Neill is thought to be keen on a Parkhead return as DoF, but it seems as if Celtic’s unfinished off-field rebuild could cost them when it comes to Robert.

Qual o balanço do time?

Only Agatha Christie could have dreamed up a start more dramatic, and that would have involved some species of cyanide poisoning

Rajneesh Gupta03-May-2002Only Agatha Christie could have dreamed up a start more dramatic, and that would have involved some species of cyanide poisoning. Mervyn Dillon shivered Shiv Sunder Das’ timbers off the very first ball he sent down in the Bridgetown Test, making Das the fourth Indian batsman to suffer the mortification of being dismissed of the first ball of a Test match.Such first-ball dismissals, however, have hoary pasts. The first instance was more than a century ago, when Arthur Cunningham of Australia had England’s Archie MacLaren caught off the first ball of the match. It is more surprising, however, to note that India’s first such casualty came as recently as 1974 and that the batsman in question was that great technician, Sunil Gavaskar.Ironically, Das has modelled his game on Gavaskar’s own style, but he will surely not want to further emulate the Little Master on this front; Gavaskar went on to suffer the same fate on two more occasions, accruing to himself the “honour” of heading the list. The first such occasion for Gavaskar came on India’s ill-fated 1974 tour of England. On July 5, at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Gavaskar was caught by wicket-keeper Alan Knott off Geoff Arnold. On December 10, 1983, at the Eden Gardens, Malcolm Marshall had Gavaskar caught behind by Jeff Dujon. In an effort to buck the trend of offering catches to wicket-keepers, Gavaskar, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur, was caught by Javed Miandad off Imran Khan on February 21, 1987.Sudhir Nayak and WV Raman provided the second and third instances of an Indian batsman falling on the first ball of a Test. Nayak fell to Andy Roberts (caught by wicket-keeper Deryck Murray) at the Eden Gardens on December 27 1974. Raman was trapped plumb in front by New Zealander Richard Hadlee at Napier on February 9 1990.But India got in on the delivering end too. Two Indian bowlers have inflicted this humiliation on opposing batsmen. The first to perform this feat was Syed Abid Ali, who bowled West Indian Roy Fredericks with the first ball of the historic Test at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain. In that match, Gavaskar made his Test debut and, more importantly, India recorded their first-ever Test win in the Caribbean.Great Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev has two such instances to his credit. On September 24 1983, at Burlton Park, Jullundur, Kapil trapped Pakistan’s Mohsin Khan lbw with the first ball of the match. The second time was at Kingsmead, Durban, on November 13 1992, when Kapil found the edge of South African Jimmy Cook’s bat, Sachin Tendulkar diving at third slip to take a good low catch.

David Norris says Junior Firpo is statement signing by Leeds

David Norris has labelled the arrival of Junior Firpo as a statement signing by Leeds United.

The Dominican Republic-born left-back, who has been capped at under-21 level by Spain, has joined the Yorkshire club from Spanish giants Barcelona.

Firpo has penned a four-year deal after completing a move worth £13million.

The 24-year-old made 18 appearances for Barcelona last season, including six in the UEFA Champions League.

Firpo has made the move to Elland Road just a matter of days after North Macedonia left-back Ezgjan Alioski’s departure was confirmed following the expiry of his contract.

Leeds had to fight off stiff competition to secure Firpo’s services, with Premier League rivals Southampton among those also earmarking the full-back as a potential arrival.

But Firpo insisted the influence of Victor Orta played a key role in deciding his future lies at Elland Road.

Former Leeds midfielder Norris insists the arrival of Firpo should not be underestimated.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “I think it’s a big statement of intent. It always is when you can beat other clubs to signings.

“I think he has caught the eye of quite a lot of clubs over the last few months, so it makes Leeds look really good.”

Mark Richardson – the perfect servant for the cause

Mark Richardson’s remarkable entrée into Test cricket continued on new terrain in the West Indies today with Grenada’s new ground the latest to witness his ability to get out in the 90s

Lynn McConnell29-Jun-2002Mark Richardson’s remarkable entrée into Test cricket continued on new terrain in the West Indies today with Grenada’s new ground the latest to witness his ability to get out in the 90s.Gut-wrenching as that would have been for Richardson, it is likely that he would have been more upset getting out in the immediate pre-stumps period. That’s the way Richardson operates. The runs are an adjunct to his main job of occupying the crease for as long as his fine qualities of concentration allow. If a high score results then that is the bonus.Certainly he would have been even more upset if a couple of balls after his departure, caught on the boundary from a pull shot off left-arm pace man Pedro Collins, an edge from Nathan Astle’s bat had been held by either wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs or first slip Brian Lara, who both had chances to clasp the opportunity. But Richardson did his job on what could have been a difficult first day for New Zealand. He and Lou Vincent scored 61 for the first wicket, but then lost skipper Stephen Fleming for six and Chris Harris for a duck. In partnership with Astle, he added 123 for the fourth wicket. It wasn’t an easy day for scoring but after an attacking start Richardson settled into a much more defensive mode, perfect tactics under the situation. Astle too, was more defiant that attacking, until he opened up with some typical boundary pounding to race to his half century, including two lovely lofted straight sixes off leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo.Given the spin, albeit slow, that Nagamootoo gained, New Zealand will be relishing the prospect of not having to face him in the fourth innings of the match, while also appreciating that their own left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori could have a significant role to play in New Zealand ensuring a series victory. After winning the toss the West Indies opted to try and blast their way through New Zealand in a bid to tie the series. But on today’s evidence, their faith in their own attack appeared mis-guided. Either that or they still don’t rate the New Zealand batting.Certainly Vettori will be looking for a more profitable return with the ball than was the case when he was out for a duck after coming in as nightwatchman following Richardson’s demise. It was his loss which has slightly inflated the West Indian return from the day as New Zealand have Astle on 69, Craig McMillan just in, and Robbie Hart and Scott Styris especially, still to come with whatever Shane Bond and Ian Butler might also throw into the mix.Back to Richardson. He can take much comfort from his role in providing such continuing outstanding service in what for so long had been the area of vulnerability for New Zealand.Things are not easy for an opening batsman in the modern scheme of things. Richardson has not had the advantage of preparation in adapting to conditions that the players who have been selected for one-day series’ both in Pakistan and now the West Indies have enjoyed. In New Zealand, it is the openers who have borne the brunt of the new, and still developing, phenomenon of playing on fiery portable pitches.Yet he soldiers on, sporting a Test average of 46.32 from his 1436 runs in 20 Tests. It says much for his own competitiveness that the challenge of taming opposing attacks is still his modus operandi.Long may that continue and the prospect of more three-figured results would seem assured. For New Zealand to really put the pressure on the home team, Astle and McMillan need to really set the base with a big stand on day two. Could it be that Test century No 9, and the third in the West Indies, is on the cards for Astle? That would surely ensure the series win for the TelstraClear Black Caps.

Técnico do time carioca nessas ocasiões, Andrade faz elogios ao adversário.

A torcida vai empurrar e fazer pressão.
