Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react to potential points deduction

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans have been riled this afternoon after journalist Alan Nixon issued a worrying 31-word update relating to potential points deductions for the Yorkshiremen.

Communicating to his large Twitter following, Nixon stated: “Sheff Wed. PFA want all players to submit claims for lost money. Danger is some who have left go to EFL to lodge complaint and that would mean poss points penalties.”

Worryingly, this claim could feasibly put the Hillsborough club at a severe disadvantage moving into 2021/22, when they are set to ply their trade in League One for the first time since 2012 [The Football Press]. Potential points sanctions could make a return to the Championship a near-impossible task for the Owls.

Reportedly owing wages to players dating back to 2020, the amount owed has now surpassed £12m [Yorkshire Live], while unpopular owner Dejphon Chansiri has been called upon by some supporters to sell the club. Deeply irked by recent events, loads of Sheffield Wednesday fans took to Twitter to fume at the “farcical” news.

Wednesday fans react to grave news

Here is what some of the Owls diehards had to say about Nixon’s update regarding the possible points deduction:

“Will we even have a club at this rate”

Credit: @lukepeo1867″Al, it doesn’t matter anymore, DC has turned us into the comedy club, it’s absolutely farcical now and the silence from @swfc  is deafening, absolute disregard for the fans who will be here long after Chansiri has run for the hills (providing the club survives that is) #swfc”Credit: @stoney_s6″What a mess. Nearly every week there is something.”Credit: @ddaardvark”Good night make Mr C have a good think about what he’s doing with my club.”Credit: @BooshyBarnet”Just put us in administration ASAP. I want him gone even if it means dropping into League 2″Credit: @deanrowdingswfc”Yet some of our fans are still blaming the EFL for stopping DC spending the millions that he wants to supposedly spend”Credit: @bazapepsIn other news, finance guru Kieran Maguire warns of a worrying potential Sheffield Wednesday development.

Afridi's blitz help Pakistan Probables triumph against Chief Executive XI

Imran Farhat’s splendid knock of 138 runs was no way inferior in quality to that of his rival opener Shahid Afridi’s blitz of 142, yet the former ended on the losing side only because his team mates did not possess enough experience and temperament

Mahmood Ahmad02-Feb-2001Imran Farhat’s splendid knock of 138 runs was no way inferior in quality to that of his rival opener Shahid Afridi’s blitz of 142, yet the former ended on the losing side only because his team mates did not possess enough experience and temperament to score quickly in the final stages of their innings. They ended up 59 runs short of the target of 320 set for victory by Pakistan Probables, after venturing to field first on a batting pitch at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi.A comparison between the batting exhibitions of the two rival openers would not be out of place at this stage. While Afridi made use of years of experience to lead nothing less then a massacre of the Chief Executive XI’s average, or may be slightly above-average attack, Imran Farhat, with not a bit of international experience to help his cause and confronted with a top-class bowling attack, crafted his innings like a mature batsmen.Had there been a little more experience in the Chief Executive XI’s batting line-up, the result of the match would surely have been different. But as it was, they ended up at 260 for three in their 50 overs after an opening stand of 137 between Imran and Taufeeq Umar (58) and then of 70 for the second wicket between Imran and Wasim (34) had laid an excellent foundation for later batsmen’s onslaught. The glittering performances of batsmen aside, full marks, however, to Wasim Akram who juggled his bowlers in arguably the most suitable manner at times when it seemed that Imran Farhat, with his flawless concentration, would run away with the match. He made prompt changes whenever he found his bowlers in trouble, and coming on to bowl himself as and when needed to put much needed breaks on the scoring rate. His field replacements also left little to be required.Earlier, put into bat by Rashid Latif, the captain of the Chief Executive XI, the opening pair of Shahid Afridi and Imran Nazir (61) made the best possible use of a placid KRL wicket to pile up 156 in only 21.2 overs for the first wicket. This partnership proved sufficient for Pakistan Probables to pass 300 runs in their allotted 50 overs, although none of the remaining batsmen could make worthwhile contributions.None of the Chief Executive XI’s bowlers had a good day simply because Afridi had gone on the rampage since the word go. Yasir Arafat got two wickets, whereas Naved-ul-Hasan and Faisal Afridi claimed one each, but they proved a bit too expensive. The Chief Executive of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharif, presided over the prize distribution ceremony after the match. Besides conferring the winner and losers’ check to the captains of both teams, he gave away the man of the match award to Imran Farhat. Saleem Elahi was declared the best fielder of the match.

Tight margin belies comfort behind Northern win over Otago

Northern Districts dispelled any dangers of electing to bat first on a Centennial Park pitch showing a slight tinge of green, by making an assured 242/6 from their 50 overs

Warwick Larkins12-Jan-2001Northern Districts dispelled any dangers of electing to bat first on a Centennial Park pitch showing a slight tinge of green, by making an assured 242/6 from their 50 overs. For the State Insurance Northern Knights Mark Bailey scored a good 65, Grant Bradburn a valuable 60 not out, James Marshall 38 and captain Robbie Hart remaining unbeaten on 29 at the end of the innings alongside Bradburn. For the Volts with the ball Paul Wiseman excelled with 1-28 from 10 overs, with Craig Cumming also impressing with 2-40 from his 10. Of the remainder of the Otago attack no-one was really collared – Warren McSkimming (1-34 off seven), Simon Forde (1-37 off seven), Craig Pryor (0-40 off 7), Matthew Horne (0-36 off 6) and David Sewell (0-14 off three). The Knights total seemed an achievable one for Otago, but the Volts required someone to make a substantial score. However from the outset the 243 required never really looked likely until the last seven overs. Even then a victory would have been a miracle had it had been achieved.Batting at number 10 Warren McSkimming scored a whirlwind 59 not out from 31 balls and almost won the day. Only 34 runs were needed off the last three overs and the way McSkimming was going a slight chance remained. But Tuffey and Yovich bowled well and ensured the win and with nine required from the last ball, it proved even beyond the skills of McSkimming.Previously Matthew Horne (36), Craig Cumming (30), Martyn Croy (28) and Craig Pryor (26) had all chimed in without going on, a problem that ultimately proved very costly for the Volts.A deserved win to the State Northern Knights by eight runs over the State Otago Volts was assisted by a solid bowling effort, led by Bradburn having a fine all-round day with 3-34 from 10 overs. Daniel Vettori returned from a lengthy break for injury with 2-33 from eight overs, while Alex Tait (2-48 off 10), Daryl Tuffey (1-46 off 10), Simon Doull (1-21 off 6) were the other wicket-takers.

Southampton interested in Benfica defender Nuno Tavares

Southampton are interested in signing Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares, according to O Jogo [via Sport Witness].

The Lowdown: Departures in Hampshire

Looking ahead to the new season, the Saints will undoubtedly be looking towards acquiring reinforcements after an underwhelming 15th-placed finish in the 2020/21 campaign, after which the club issued their retained players list, which heralded some notable absentees.

Squad members such as Jake Hesketh and Josh Sims are among those to move on, although long-serving left-back Ryan Bertrand is the most high-profile departure [Southampton FC]. Set to join Leicester City on a free transfer [Football Insider], he leaves a sizeable void in the left-back area.

Could Nuno Tavares be the man to succeed the England international at St Mary’s?

The Latest: Saints and Napoli interested

The Saints are currently said to be monitoring Tavares alongside Italian giants Napoli [O Jogo, via Sport Witness].

Seemingly, the 21-year-old could be open to a move to the south coast. Southampton are rumoured to have ‘requested information’ on the Portuguese native [O Jogo, via Sport Witness]. Spectacularly, the youngster has fuelled speculation over his future after a video emerged of him complaining over his lack of first-team opportunities ahead of his positional rival Alex Grimaldo [Prime Time Sports].

His next move ‘remains on the table’, signifying there could be some traction to these latest developments [O Jogo, via Sport Witness]

The Verdict: Tavares would be a good signing, if he amends his attitude

Showing competence in attack and defence, Tavares has helped his side to earn eight clean sheets in 2020/21, whilst also completing 1.8 dribbles per game on average [WhoScored].

In terms of playing ability, the 21-year-old would probably fit nicely into the St Mary’s fold this summer. Furthermore, the advantageous nature of his age would mean a near-certainty of high resale value further down the line – he is currently valued at just £6.3m by Transfermarkt.

However, in light of the video about Grimaldo, his attitude needs work, especially in as competitive an environment as the Premier League. If Tavares could prospectively keep a lid on his temper and not land himself in hot water needlessly, he could have a very big future in the game.

In other news, ex-Saints vice-chairman Les Reed lifts the lid on his relationship with the club owner.

Marcus Bent drops big claim if Everton re-sign Ademola Lookman

Marcus Bent has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that there would be a huge weight of expectation on Ademola Lookman’s shoulders were Everton to re-sign him this summer.

Having come through the ranks at Charlton, the 23-year-old has gone down a different career path to many young English players at his age.

He left Charlton to join Everton, and despite scoring on his debut against Manchester City, never managed to establish himself as a regular at Goodison Park and left for Leipzig permanently two years ago following a successful loan spell.

But Lookman’s struggles resurfaced during his first year in Germany, forcing him to move back to the Premier League last summer – making a return to London with Fulham.

And despite their immediate relegation back to the Championship, Lookman showed his capabilities in the Premier League by scoring four times and adding four assists in 34 appearances.

Bent has previously suggested that a quick winger is on Everton’s shopping list this summer, but told The Transfer Tavern that Lookman would be expected to perform following his fine form for Fulham:

“He did well for Fulham, the problem being is that if he goes to Everton, he’s going to be expected to come in and do well.

“Obviously for Fulham in the Premier League, now they’ve gone down, yes, they’re going to look at him, but he’d have to hit the ground running.”

Lancashire make a good start on Day 1 at Belville

The Lancashire batters made a fine start to their 3 day match versus Boland Academy at Belville, Cape Town

John Dawson26-Mar-2001The Lancashire batters made a fine start to their 3 day match versus Boland Academy at Belville, Cape Town. After being put into bat on a slightly damp wicket, the visitors amassed 337 runs before finally declaring with 6 wickets down and 45 min. play left in the first day. Ryan Driver continued his super form, batting for nearly two sessions for his 93.Tim Roberts made a quick fire 70 and Joe Scuderi was left unbeaten on 77. Their was disapointment for John Crawley for the first time on the tour when he was out out on the second ball after the drinks break when he was going well towards a big score. The Academy had 10 overs to negotiate at the end of the day and did so without losing a wicket but they failed to get their total into double figures.Lancashire’s injury worries continued when John Wood sprained an ankle whilst bowling his second ball of the innings and had to leave for treatment by Lawrie Brown.
