Emprestado pelo Botafogo ao América para a disputa do Campeonato Carioca, o zagueiro Matheus Menezes teve boas atuações nas duas últimas rodadas do Estadual – vitória contra o Resende, e derrota para o Macaé, as primeiras dele pelo clube. Deste modo, o defensor, de 24 anos, ganhou a posição no time titular e está confirmado para o jogo desta quinta-feira, contra o Bangu, às 21h, em Edson Passos, em Mesquita, na Baixada Fluminense, pela quinta rodada do Estadual. Satisfeito pelas oportunidades que vem recebendo na equipe, o jogador fala do bom momento e das expectativas dele para a sequência do trabalho.

– Estou muito feliz pelos elogios que recebi, mas é o início de um trabalho e tenho de me manter com foco no trabalho e buscar uma evolução ainda maior. Eu fiz uma pré-temporada intensa, e estava preparado para esta oportunidade. Realizei dois jogos consecutivos como titular e a tendência é crescer com esta sequência de jogos, sequência que não tive nos outros clubes pelos quais passei. O trabalho aqui está sendo muito bem feito e estamos assimilando bem o que o Ricardo Cruz (treinador) nos pede. Vamos fazer um grande campeonato – afirmou Matheus, confiante para a partida contra o Bangu esta noite:

– Nossos jogadores estão muito bem preparados e confiantes. Vamos jogar em casa e, com apoio da nossa torcida, temos que entrar em campo pensando apenas na vitória.

No América, Matheus tem formado a dupla de zaga com Fábio Braz, ex-jogador de clubes como Vasco e Corinthians. Para Matheus, a experiência do companheiro tem acrescentado muito e a tendência é que, com o passar dos jogos, o entrosamento entre eles melhore, consolidando ainda mais a defesa rubra no Estadual.

– O Braz é um jogador muito experiente. O benefício de jogar com alguém que tenha uma vasta experiência é estar sempre ouvindo os conselhos e as orientações dele dentro de campo, na busca de uma evolução tanto individual quanto coletiva. Nós formamos uma uma boa dupla nestas partidas anteriores, as coisas estão dando certo e acredito que irão melhorar com certeza, porque temos trabalho por isso – afirmou.

Revelado pelo Goiás, Matheus chegou ao Botafogo para a equipe sub-20, em 2011, e foi capitão da equipe campeã estadual daquele ano, sendo promovido ao elenco profissional. O jogador acumula ainda passagens por Icasa, Tombense e Aparecidense. Agora, mais amadurecido, o jogador afirma estar preparado para os desafios no América, que retornou à Série A do Estadual neste ano, e, consequentemente, na carreira.

– Estou muito satisfeito aqui, fui muito bem recebido por todos aqui no clube, e estou retribuindo dentro de campo com trabalho e dedicação. A primeira meta e atingir os objetivos do América no Campeonato Carioca, em seguida, veremos qual a posição do Botafogo, clube ao qual ainda tenho contrato – disse o zagueiro, que tem vínculo com o Botafogo até dezembro deste ano.

Southampton have struggled for goals in recent weeks, with Danny Ings’ winner against Liverpool their only goal in the top-flight in their last four fixtures. Part of the problem could be due to Che Adams’ drop in form.

However, with Ings set to return to action against Arsenal this weekend after a brief period out with the current viral outbreak, his partnership with the former Birmingham City man in attack could be the catalyst for an upturn in form.

Adams started the season in an excellent fashion for the Saints, managing four goals and four assists in his opening 14 fixtures which led Ralph Hasenhuttl to suggest that:

“He’s a role model for the time we went through – from zero to hero at the moment,” following his goal in the 2-0 win against Newcastle United earlier this season that sent Southampton to the top of the Premier League.

However, he has struggled in each of his last five appearances for the South Coast club, failing to score or assist and producing disappointing all-round displays.

Whilst this is already an improvement of his goals and assist tally from last season, the young striker will be hoping that he doesn’t slip into his habits from last season, where he struggled to find the back of the net for so long.

Although he only featured as a substitute against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup last time out, his lack of confidence in front of goal was evident when he rounded the ‘keeper late on, before switching the ball to his right foot instead of shooting into the open net, which allowed the Shrews defender to get back and block his shot.

He has looked at his most dangerous when paired with a fully-fit Ings, so with the England international expected to feature against Arsenal on Saturday, Hasenhuttl will be hoping that the 24-year-old can rediscover his best form.

£15m man Adams has already assisted Ings twice in the Premier League this season, so it is clear that the two have a connection when starting together in Hasenhuttl’s attack.

Therefore, whilst the majority of Southampton fans will be excited for Ings’ return to action, it could be the impact he has on Adams’ performances that will be the most crucial improvement in Hasenhuttl’s side.

After some disappointing results in recent weeks, the Austrian manager will be hoping that now he has both of his first-choice strikers back available, the Saints will start to pick up better results, starting with the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Arsenal on Saturday.

After suffering a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Burnley last time out, Aston Villa will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they travel to St Mary’s to take on Southampton.

Dean Smith’s side will want to pick up some momentum as soon as possible as they search for a surprise European place this season, and face a Southampton side who are coming off the back of a timid loss of their own, losing 3-1 to Arsenal.

But whilst the Saints will look to Danny Ings for inspiration – the England international has been in fine form once again this season with seven goals in 14 Premier League games – Villa should be just as wary about Stuart Armstrong.

The Scotland international has looked in impressive form in recent weeks, and capped off a fine individual performance against Arsenal with a well-taken goal after a James Ward-Prowse corner.

His former boss at Celtic, Brendan Rodgers, raved about Armstrong’s abilities when the versatile ace made the move south of the border to join Southampton.

He said: “What sets him apart from a lot of midfield players is he has an instinct to arrive in the box and score. I think with that opportunity, with him being really aggressive, he can go and hopefully take that because we all know he can get goals.”

The £50k-a-week ace will no doubt fancy his chances of causing Matty Cash some problems down the Southampton left, after really making life difficult for Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin, who’s one of the quickest players in the Premier League.

And when you factor in the fact Cash arguably produced his worst performance in a Villa shirt since his summer arrival from Nottingham Forest against Burnley, Smith will surely be worried that the Saints’ in-form winger could cause his full-back yet more problems.

So whilst Ings might be Southampton’s star attraction, Villa must pay close attention to Armstrong on Saturday night.

O atacante Rogério tem recebido mais chances do técnico Edgardo Bauza. Não do modo como gostaria. Acostumado a jogar pelas beiradas do campo, o camisa 17 do São Paulo tem feito as vezes de Ganso nos gramados, mas, fora deles, aproveita para ‘ensinar’ o argentino Ricardo Centurión a render mais na ponta direita.

Centurión teve boa atuação na partida contra o Mogi Mirim, após uma série de baixos rendimentos. Antes de tal jogo, Rogério deu dicas ao argentino sobre jogar na ponta.

– Eu falei para ele, eu explico que é tudo questão de trabalho nos treinos. Se faz o que faz no treino, não tem como dar errado no jogo – disse Rogério, durante evento da Puma nesta quinta-feira, em São Paulo, ao LANCE!.

Mesmo frustrado por fazer a função de meia no São Paulo, já que ainda sofre por receber a bola de costas para o gol e se prende na marcação adversária, Rogério acha válida a insistência de Patón no futebol de Centurión:

– Eu sei separar as coisas. O técnico, quando pega uma formação, tem que manter, até para dar sequência ao jogador. O Bauza é correto nisso, não pode tirar com dois ou três jogos. Acho que ele vai melhorar bastante.

Vale lembrar que a insatisfação de Rogério com o meio-campo foi um dos combustíveis para a conversa de Patón com o elenco na manhã de ontem. O atacante externou sua dificuldade em jogar fora de posição, após a partida contra o Mogi, e teve discurso endossado por Ganso.

– Bauza falou para mim: ‘Vai lá e joga’. Não é muito de papo. Eu sou funcionário do clube, estou ali para jogar onde ele me coloca, mas é claro que é meio complicado me adaptar – completou ontem, durante evento.

Para Rogério, os problemas do Tricolor são todos passageiros, até mesmo a fase ruim de Centurión é coisa do passado para o nordestino.

– Errar é humano. É só a gente começar a vencer que a torcida vai voltar a comparecer em peso e que ele (Centurión) não vai mais ser vaiado por ninguém. Ele sabe disso – finalizou o ‘conselheiro’ de Centurión.

Foi meio de surpresa, eu sou um jogador de beirada, para me adaptar ali é meio complicado porque recebendo a bola de costas é complicado, chega dois ou três marcadores. Contra o Mogi Mirim, tiveram duas ou três bolas que eu perdi por não estar adaptado ali no meio, mas jogando como pediu.

E como foi a conversa com Bauza?
Sempre o Patón passas os vídeos de erros ou jogadas que a gente fez, uma conversa normal. Treinador tem de ser assim, mostrar nossos erros.

Você é o xodó da torcida…
Consegui isso nos treinos, no trabalho, me dedico ao São Paulo, não deixo a desejar. O que acontece nos treinos, acontece no jogo, quando tenho a oportunidade, faço o gol.

E o que falta para ser titular?
Essa pergunta é para o técnico (risos). De qualquer forma, ele sabe a melhor opção. Então, tenho de aproveitar as oportunidades e dar meu melhor.

E no dia a dia do clube, como está a relação com os gringos?
Tranquila a relação. O pouco que ele (Calleri) fala dá para entender. Só não dá para entender quando fala muito rápido (risos). Da mesma forma a gente pode estar jogando fora do país e tem que estar adaptado a situação.

O que esperar do jogo contra o River Plate, pela Libertadores?
Agora estamos pensando no Paulistão, isso também é importante para gente, para mantermos a sequência de vitórias e retomarmos a confiança de vez. Depois disso é que vamos pensar na Libertadores, todo jogo de Libertadores é decisão para nós.

Speaking exclusively to FootballFanCast, Steve Howey has delivered his verdict on Kalvin Phillips’ injury blow for Leeds United.

The England international was forced off in Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace last time out in the Premier League, with the midfielder initially seeming to go down with a calf problem.

And, ahead of the Whites’ clash against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon, Bielsa confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Phillips is a doubt for the game, but that no decision has been made just yet.

When asked about how big of a blow Phillips’ absence would be for Bielsa, former Newcastle defender Howey admitted: “Huge. Again, this is probably the third time we’ve said that it’s another opportunity for someone else to come in and grab their chance.

“With him, I’ve seen him make his debut and thought ‘decent, but what’s all the fuss about?’. But I hadn’t really watched him so my mind wasn’t made up. I’m hearing people say how good he is, and I had the opportunity to see him at Everton against Leeds.

“He was absolutely superb. Gareth Southgate was there and I spoke to him before the game, and I’ve seen him at another game and said to him afterwards ‘Wow, he was good. I can totally understand where you’re coming from getting him in the England squad’. And he said ‘He was good wasn’t he? He ran the show.’ He was absolutely brilliant and he’s a very, very impressive young man.”

Phillips has been an ever-present for Bielsa in Leeds’ return to the Premier League, missing just four games in the top-flight, and even that was down to injury.

He makes the Whites tick in the engine room, and his ability to be an anchor on defence, and still have the quality to move things forward with his range of passing means he’s the kind of player that Leeds will always struggle to replace.

He features highly when it comes to his influence on this Leeds side, ranking first for tackles made (2.7 per game), fourth for interceptions (1.6), fourth for key passes (1.3), and top for crosses (1.2) – a player who’s involved as much as Phillips is, makes it that much more difficult for his manager to try and replace.

The £18m-rated star would no doubt be a major miss for Bielsa if he were to be ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Gunners.

– É um absurdo. Não vou dizer que surpreende nos dias de hoje, porque nossa sociedade está tão maluca em termos de conceito e comportamento que nada mais nos surpreende. Tottenham Hotspur veteran Moussa Sissoko was perhaps the one negative from Wednesday night’s emphatic Europa League victory over Wolfsberger AC.

But tht merely continues a worrying trend that should see the 31-year-old moved on in the summer.

He’s gone from a regular under Jose Mourinho to a mere bit-part player and certainly looks like a shadow of his former self.

Both Victor Wanyama, 28, and Mousa Dembele, 31, were sold by Spurs when the writing was on the wall, so Daniel Levy and co could repeat that feat here with Sissoko.

On the Chalkboard

The £16m-rated Frenchman had started 11 games in a row in the Premier League for Spurs between October and December this season but now finds himself down the pecking order, having only started two of their last seven outings, via Transfermarkt.

Therefore, it was on Sissoko to deliver when given an opportunity, just like on Wednesday night when Mourinho started him alongside Harry Winks, though in return, the bustling midfielder showed that he was terribly out of form as he graded as Spurs’ worst player (6.6) as per SofaScore ratings.

Usually, the former Newcastle man is solid defensively and very active in terms of work-rate, managing an average of 1.2 tackles on the season but against the Austrian minnows, he failed to manage a single tackle and was instead dribbled past once by the poorer quality team.

Sissoko was also weak and lightweight, winning only two of five duels in the 81 minutes he was on the pitch – this was the worst of any Spurs midfielder who started the match, whilst substitute Marcel Lavinier – a 20-year-old debutant at right-back – won double the number of battles in only 16 minutes of action, via SofaScore.

Though, his disappointing display in what was a routine win for Spurs was merely a microcosm for his overall form for the club – it’s trending downwards, and at 31, he really should have no long-term future at the club especially amid links to RB Leipzig livewire Marcel Sabitzer, and the emergence of Oliver Skipp.

In terms of Europa League starters, Sissoko ranks worst for average WhoScored rating in the whole squad (6.35) – only the young academy hopefuls that have received minutes from the bench have been graded worse.

Similarly, in the Premier League, the French midfielder sits 14th overall (6.59), which is second-bottom for those that have started 12 or more matches – clearly, this shows that Sissoko is regressing at a worrying rate and thus, should be sold in the summer.

This is reinforced by the fact that he is down on his numbers from the 2019/20 campaign, where he averaged a rating of 6.79 in the English top-flight, and managed more tackles (1.3), more dribbles (1.4) and more key passes (0.6) per appearance, via WhoScored.

Sissoko is also among the high earners at the club, raking in a reported £90k-per-week at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which is better earnings than Sergio Reguilon (£80k-p/w), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£65k-p/w), and even Toby Alderweireld (£85k-p/w).

The long-serving Spurs passenger must be axed from the starting XI going forward and when the transfer window reopens, the north London outfit must do all they can to make some money on him.

All in all, he’s simply no longer good enough.
