Wolves’ Premier League problems continued on Sunday afternoon as they again failed to earn their first three points of the season, but it could have been a lot worse.

It’s now six straight domestic matches without a win as now only Watford sit below them in the table – though, just two of those games have been defeats.

And it was very nearly a loss at Selhurst Park.

Starting the game in a 3-4-3 formation, Wolves looked the brighter of the two teams in the first half.

The visitors launched a scathing counter-attack along the right flank with the 23-year-old eventually crossing it to the Portuguese forward to scramble home with seconds left on the clock.

Nuno Santo wasn’t helped by the fact that Romain Saiss was sent off and the Wanderers boss has since come out and said the 29-year-old needs to learn from his mistakes.

But maybe he should take a look at himself before offering out that advice.

Saiss put in a woeful showing at left centre-back, recording the lowest rating of anyone that featured in the match at 6.1.

In his 73 minutes, the Morocco international was dribbled past twice, he lost possession a disastrous eight times and won just 50% of his ground duels, per SofaScore.

Last time he played at centre-back was just last weekend when Wolves were thrashed 5-2 at home by Chelsea – if it wasn’t obvious enough that Saiss isn’t suited to the role after that shambolic showing then it surely must be now.

Before then, Saiss was deployed in midfield playing a crucial role in their six Europa League qualification wins and even played and scored there in the Everton defeat.

That is his best position.

Nuno is just bringing it on himself by continuing to play him in the entirely wrong position.

David Ornstein revealed in the summer that Hodgson planned to use Camarasa – who scored five goals for Cardiff last term – in a wide area, so we’ve gone with the Spaniard out wide and Germany international Meyer in the middle.

The only other significant change that we’ve gone for is the removal of Patrick van Aanholt from the XI – we recently detailed how poor he has been under Hodgson from a defensive aspect.

Due to Meyer and Camarasa coming into midfield, Jeffrey Schlupp should drop deeper into left-back in place of the Dutchman, allowing the two creative players to take the game to Norwich and look to create more chances than has been typical of Palace.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, John Hartson has hailed Sir Alex Ferguson’s ability to rejuvenate his squad and move players on at exactly the right time.

The likes of Manchester United, and even rivals Tottenham, have been presented with a situation where their most high-profile players have expressed a desire to leave.

The Red Devils have already seen the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez depart in the summer, whilst Spurs face the prospect of losing Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld over the course of the next year or so.

And now, Hartson has tipped his hat to Ferguson’s ability to constantly stay on top of things, and to accurately make strong judgement calls on the players who needed to be shipped out.

He said: “There’s always change at football clubs but that’s where managers show their class.

“Sir Alex Ferguson knew when to get rid of great players. He knew when players were fading away. Sir Alex was great at that.”

Make no mistake about it, ensuring you’re making the right decision in moving players on is a true art form.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already seen the perils of trying to refresh his squad, most notably through the current shortage of options they have up front. Would Ferguson have given the green-light to let both Lukaku and Sanchez go in the same window without first having signed a replacement? Probably not.

Solskjaer is still in the infancy of his managerial reign at the highest level, and it is therefore far too ridiculous and premature to expect the Norwegian to have the same sort of nous that United’s greatest ever boss had.

But as the Red Devils continue their rebuild, they have to get things absolutely spot on in regards to the personnel they let go over the coming months and years.
