Leicester City’s 4-1 loss to Crystal Palace proved terminal for Claude Puel’s tenure at the helm as the Frenchman was given the boot just two days later. It was soon apparent who was being lined up to replace the former Southampton manager and Brendan Rodgers quickly quit Celtic in favour of a sensational return to the Premier League.

The Northern Irishman was in attendance for the Foxes’ 2-1 win over Brighton on Wednesday and was no doubt assessing his group of players ahead of his first training session.

While he would have been impressed what he saw from the likes of Jamie Vardy and Demarai Gray, who both scored on the night, there may be a few players he should already be planning to axe.

Who, then, are the three players Rodgers needs to give the boot if he is to take Leicester to the next level?

Shinji Okazaki

Okazaki will go down in Leicester history for the part he played in the Foxes’ 15/16 title-winning campaign, but that was three years ago now and, if the club is to progress, they must offload the Japan international.

The 32-year-old has made 18 appearances this season but has failed to net, instead chalking up just one assist – a poor return for any Premier League forward, let alone one playing for a team that are chasing top half success.

Leicester signed the industrious attacker from Mainz in the summer prior to their wonder-land season but he has hardly set the world alight and is now into his twilight years. Rodgers should sell the fan-favourite in the summer.

Danny Simpson

A similar case to Okazaki, 32-year-old Simpson is far past his best and, despite being a fixture in the Leicester side three years ago, is now a spare part at the King Power Stadium.

The right-back has made just five Premier League appearances this season, instead getting most of his football playing for the development side or in the domestic cup competitions, in which Leicester were poor.

Ricardo Pereira has nailed down the starting spot on the right of the back four and the Portuguese is going nowhere any time soon – he has chalked up seven goal contributions in 25 league appearances for the Foxes and is a serious challenger to James Maddison for the East Midlands outfit’s signing of the summer.

In October, Puel said that former Manchester United man Simpson must be respected for his exploits under Claudio Ranieri but that he couldn’t guarantee the defender game-time. The Frenchman stuck to his word but perhaps it’s time Rodgers finished the job and showed him to the exit door.

Nampalys Mendy

Ranieri surely thought he was getting the perfect N’Golo Kante replacement when Nampalys Mendy arrived at the King Power Stadium in the summer of 2016 – both are of a similar build and mould with fantastic work-rate – but the 26-year-old has struggled to fill the void left by Kante.

The Frenchman was a firm favourite under Puel and has made 24 league appearances this season but his numbers don’t stand up – Mendy is statistically one of the worst players in the squad, averaging a match rating of 6.43. If Rodgers is to take Leicester to new heights, finding a quality defensive partner for Wilfred Ndidi in the middle of the park is a priority.

وسيطالب البلايلي من فيفا في شكوته إجبار أهلي جدة على دفع راتبه، في المقابل، سيلقي النادي السعودي السبب وراء عدم دفع مستحقات اللاعب بسبب عدم انضمام إلى تدريبات الفريق بعد عودة النشاط عقب جائحة فيروس كورونا.

ولكن اللاعب يؤكد على أن تم إبلاغ أهلي جدة في الوقت المناسب بأنه من المستحيل عودته بسبب عينته الإيجابية لفيروس كورونا في 19 أغسطس الماضي، رغم إرسال النادي السعودي طائرة خاصة لاستقلاله، ثم أغلقت المطارات في الجزائر وهو ما منع عودته فيما بعد إلى جدة.

وبحسب صحيفة “Compettition” الجزائرية من المتوقع أن تحكم لجنة فض المنازعات في الفيفا لصالح اللاعب الدولي بعد تقديمه كل الإثباتات اللازمة أمام الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم.

واستبعد أهلي جدة البلايلي من حساباته في الموسم الجديد بناءً على رغبة المدير الفني، فلادان ميلويفيتش، رغم رغبة النادي في عودة الجزائري في فترة سابقة لكن بعد قرار الجهاز الفني لم يعد يتواصل مع اللاعب في الأيام الماضية.

وهناك خلافات في وجهات النظر بين الطرفين، حيث أبلغ أهلي جدة وكيل اللاعب بأنه سيرحل عن الفريق السعودي ولكن بشرط أن يحصل على عرض قيمته 2 مليون يورو أو أن يبقى البلايلي ويوافق على تخفيض راتبه بنسبة 50%، حيث يتقاضى بطل أمم إفريقيا 2019 مبلغ قيمته 300 ألف يورو شهريًا.

ويرى البلايلي أن طلبات أهلي جدة ما هي إلا شكل من أشكال الابتزاز من جانب النادي السعودي، ولذلك سيقدم كل تلك المستندات إلى الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم.

بعض الوكلاء في الفترة الماضية عرضوا على البلايلي إمكانية الانتقال إلى أحد الفرق الإيطالية أو الإسبانية، خاصة وأن هناك اهتمام من قبل أندية نابولي، خيتافي، فالنسيا وفياريال وهناك أيضًا اهتمام من طرف الأهلي بطل الدوري المصري.

There would have been plenty of excitement when Wolverhampton Wanderers signed the highly-rated Leander Dendoncker on a season-long loan deal from Anderlecht during the summer transfer window, and rightly so.

The 23-year-old had proven himself as a key player for Anderlecht and appeared multiple times in the Champions League for them, shone alongside Youri Tielemans in midfield and shown his versatility by playing as a centre-back too, as well as being named in Belgium’s 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup.

However, it was quickly apparent that Nuno Santo and his coaching team weren’t ready to throw him straight into the thick of Premier League action with the newly-promoted club, with The Express & Star reporting at the end of August that he would need and be given time to adapt to the quicker-paced English game.

That was quite confusing at the time given the wealth of experience he had for his age – he had made 171 appearances for Anderlecht – and while he appeared in the EFL Cup for the west Midlands outfit he didn’t make his top-flight debut until the beginning of December against Chelsea.

Having played just a further 68 minutes between then and mid-January, he has since made nine successive starts and only missed 34 minutes of action since Santo switched to a 3-5-2 system.

Ironically it was against the side he made his Premier League debut again where he really came of age – making eight tackles, five interceptions and four clearances – as Wolves came within minutes of a famous win at Stamford Bridge.

The 6 ft 2 midfielder shone as he helped out the likes of Matt Doherty and Romain Saiss from a defensive point of view on day where he saw little of the ball, helping to thwart fellow countryman Eden Hazard – until his late equaliser that is.

The Belgium international looks to be ready-made for the English top flight and that may well be because he was afforded time to get ready for it both physically and mentally – that once confusing Santo decision suddenly looks like a sensible one that has seriously paid off.

وأكمل: “أحيانًا يشعر مدرب كرة القدم بمستقبل غامض وغير متسق، ويجب عليهم السعي وراء فرص جديدة، يمكنهم من خلالها النمو والحصول على أجر أكبر”.

[ad_pod ]Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Liam Palmer has received his first ever call up to the Scotland senior squad for their upcoming EURO 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan and San Marino.

The 6 foot 2 full-back will join Wednesday teammate Barry Bannan in Alex McLeish’s squad, who will be looking to add to the 27 Scotland caps he already has to his name.

27-year-old Palmer, meanwhile, will be hoping to make his first senior appearance at international level. He has only previously represented his country at under-19 and under-21 level, amassing twelve caps for the junior age groups in total.

Palmer has earned the call up with his consistently impressive performances at Hillsborough throughout this campaign.

The defender has been a first team regular for the Owls, having started 25 of his 26 Championship outings this season, as per Transfermarkt’s stats.

Following the announcement, plenty of Wednesday fans took to Twitter to congratulate the full-back and wish him well…

Newcastle have apparently offered Rafa Benitez a written offer to extend his contract at the club, in a sign that Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley want the situation that has dragged on for months — and often in public — resolved as soon as possible.

The Newcastle Chronicle report that Benitez is relaxed about the negotiations, and is clearly in no rush, claiming “we have plenty of time”.

But is that true?

It may be that Rafa is trying the Theresa May Brexit approach — run the clock down, and hope it gives you more chance of getting everything you want in a last-minute frenzy.

But Ashley may prefer the European Union method — make your pitch, refuse to budge and wait for them to blink first.

The problem is, of course, unlike the EU negotiations — where May needs the EU deal far more than the EU need the UK to accept it — Newcastle United need Rafa, whereas he does not need them, and all the problems that come with them, as much.

Rafa knows that. Rafa knows that Ashley knows that.

So looking at it from Benitez’s perspective, he is right, there is plenty of time.

But what about the fans? They need to have the situation sorted now. It is season ticket renewal time, and with #IfRafaGoesWeGo campaigns on Twitter, and the prospect of all-out rebellion if that happens, the supporters need answers before they commit sums of money to blindly follow the club amid more broken promises and lack of ambition.

So from their view, the time for progress is now, not the end of the season — by which time it may all be too late.

So does a written offer mean anything has changed? Well, bluntly, not really.

Everyone knows that offers have been suggested and put forward to Rafa. Everyone knows it is not about the salary. Everyone knows what it will take to keep the Spaniard at St James’ Park.

The fact that the latest offer is on paper, changes little. We are not privy to what the written offer contains, of course. But to think it would be to accept lock, stock and barrel everything Rafa has asked for, would be naive in the extreme.

So cynical fans will yet again point to this looking like another Keith Bishop publicity stunt, put out to hoodwink fans into believing Ashley is the proactive voice in negotiations.

To go back to the UK Government Brexit analogy – A deal is on the table, but it is not a great deal and will not be accepted without going back to the table and negotiating a better one for all sides.

يستعد نادي بوروسيا دورتموند الألماني لمنع اللاعب جاون سانشو من الرحيل في العام المقبل، وسط اهتمام أكثر من نادِ بالحصول على خدماته.

وارتبط سانشو بشكل قوي بخطوة الرحيل عن سيجنال إيدونا بارك، هذا الصيف، حيث تنافس أكثر من نادِ على ضمه مثل ليفربول ومانشستر يونايتد وتشيلسي وريال مدريد وبايرن ميونخ.

وكان مانشستر يونايتد أكثر الأندية رغبة في ضم سانشو، وقدم أكثر من عرض لحسم الصفقة ولكن هذه الخطوة لم تتم بسبب عدم التوصل إلى اتفاق مع دورتموند حول الرسوم المالية.

وذكرت تقارير صحفية أن مانشستر يونايتد لن يستسلم وسيحاول العام المقبل ضم سانشو، إلى جانب ليفربول كذلك.

ولكن شبكة “ليفربول إيكو” الإنجليزية، نقلًا عن نظيرتها “90 Minutes”، أكدت أن بوروسيا دورتموند لن يسهل أبدًا عملية رحيل جادون سانشو عن صفوف الفريق.

وأوضحت أن مسؤولي دورتموند ينوون منح سانشو عقدًا جديدًا طويل الأمد، للاحتفاظ بخدماته لأطول فترة ممكنة.

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s chief football writer Phil Hay has put together a Championship squad and manager of the season, and while some Leeds United fans may be surprised that he has snubbed Marcelo Bielsa and opted for Norwich City’s Daniel Farke instead for the latter, he is absolutely spot on.

What’s the word, then?

Well, with the international break in full swing and with just eight fixtures of the league campaign remaining, Hay decided to pick an 18-man squad of the best performing players from this term in England’s second tier, accompanied by the top boss in his opinion.

Given he covers the Yorkshire outfit and generally how easy they have been on the eye throughout the season as they have challenged at the top of the table, it wouldn’t have been any surprise if the Argentine got the nod even if their form has dropped off slightly in recent months.

It was one of those managers who finds himself above the Whites in Farke who was given the accolade though, and it is the right decision.

Why?

Not many people would have chosen Norwich, Sheffield United and Leeds as the clubs fighting for automatic promotion at this stage of the campaign if asked in pre-season, but that is exactly how it has panned out.

While Farke has had longer at Carrow Road than the South American has had at Elland Road having been appointed in 2017, he had to deal with the loss of James Maddison, Josh Murphy and Angus Gunn in the summer.

Despite those exits, the Norfolk-based outfit have been playing some outstanding football and have netted 77 goals so far – 14 more than Bielsa’s men – and the German deserves the recognition from Hay, who obviously still has great respect for the experienced man in charge at LS11.
