More clean sheets than Pope: Newcastle now racing to sign £29m "revelation"

Following an inconsistent campaign, Nick Pope could find himself replaced at Newcastle United with the Magpies reportedly racing to sign a goalkeeper worth £29m this summer.

Newcastle battling to sign Pope upgrade

Since returning from injury, there’s been a number of question marks over whether Pope should still be Newcastle’s No 1. The England international has had several troubles with the ball at his feet for some time, and as those at St James’ Park look to make a swift return to the Champions League, they could seek an instant upgrade this summer.

On that front, the main name mentioned across the last few months has been James Trafford. The Burnley shot-stopper has been excellent in the Championship this season and is undoubtedly a player who should be playing in the Premier League. Having reportedly had personal terms in place for some time with Newcastle, he could finally complete his move to Tyneside this summer.

That said, Burnley’s potential promotion back to the Premier League could yet throw a spanner in the works – potentially forcing the Magpies to turn towards Serie A and another emerging star.

According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle are now racing to sign Mile Svilar from AS Roma, who has recently stalled contract talks at the Italian club amid interest from St James’ Park, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Mile Svilar for AS Roma.

Whilst his current deal doesn’t expire until 2027, Roma have been keen to tie their goalkeeper down to fresh terms in what has proven to be more difficult than perhaps expected. Reportedly valued at €35m (£29m) if he does depart this summer, Newcastle could swoop in and sign the Italians’ contract rebel.

Given that Svilar is just 25 years old, Eddie Howe would be getting a shot-stopper at the peak of his powers and an instant upgrade on current No 1 Pope this summer.

"Revelation" Svilar is one to watch

Although his career hasn’t always taken the linear path towards success, Svilar is the undisputed starter in Rome these days and could yet have the most important decision of his career to make when the summer arrives. It’s then that Newcastle could welcome an upgrade on Pope and their new No 1 for years to come at St James’ Park.

The numbers don’t lie and represent exactly how Svilar could improve Howe’s side, combining his shot-stopping talent with his composed ball-playing ability. Dubbed a “revelation” by analyst Ben Mattinson last season, that verdict remains true even now a year on.

When the summer arrives, Newcastle should make their move as soon as they can in an attempt to beat Manchester City to Svilar’s signature. He ticks every box for what Howe needs. The Roma star is still in his prime, has no troubles on the shot-stopping front and has that key modern-day ability on the ball that Pope arguably lacks.

Whether the Magpies can lure Svilar into a move over the likes of Manchester City remains to be seen, however.

Oliver Price shines with bat and ball to guide Gloucestershire to emphatic win

David Payne chimes in with two wickets as Gloucestershire beat Middlesex

Oliver Price produced a telling performance with both bat and ball to guide Gloucestershire to an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Middlesex in an ultimately one-sided Vitality Blast contest at Bristol’s Seat Unique Stadium. The Oxford-born allrounder top-scored with 46 and shared in crucial partnerships of 60 with Miles Hammond and 52 with Zafar Gohar for the second and third wickets respectively as the home side chased down a target of 140 with 10 balls to spare to register their second win in three days.Middlesex have struggled to post big totals in the short format this season and this match was no exception, the visitors struggling to build meaningful partnerships and coming up short on 139 for 9 after being put into bat. Jack Davies hit a defiant unbeaten 46 and Max Holden contributed a valuable 34, but veteran left-arm seamer David Payne claimed 2 for 21 and off spinner Price 2 for 18 as Gloucestershire took wickets at regular intervals to keep a lid on things.Victorious in three of their last four outings, improving Gloucestershire kept alive their hopes of progressing to the knock-out stages, but Middlesex are already down and out, consigned to the foot of the South Group after losing their opening six games.Just as they did against Surrey on Friday night, Gloucestershire restricted their opponents to a below-par total and then managed the chase in a controlled fashion.Promoted to open the innings on the back of his record-breaking 19-ball 50 against Essex last week, Ben Charlesworth has yet to spark at the top of the order, and he was stumped off the bowling of Josh de Caires for 12 as Gloucestershire lost their first wicket with 24 on the board in the fourth over. Also pushed up the order, Hammond made a better fist of things, twice cover driving Blake Cullen to the boundary and then stepping down the track and hitting Thilan Walallawita straight down the ground as the home side advanced their score to 43 for 1 while the fielding restrictions were in place.Cautious beginnings gave way to adventure on the part of Price, the 21-year-old tucking into spinners de Caires and Walallawita to provide Gloucestershire with crucial momentum. The 21-year-old plundered a brace of fours off de Caires in the sixth over and then repeated the feat against Walallawita in the ninth, Gloucestershire reaching the halfway stage of their innings well-placed at 73 for 1.Requiring a further 67 runs at 6.70 an over with nine wickets in hand, Gloucestershire were well served by their second-wicket pair, who accumulated in a controlled fashion to lay the foundations for a successful chase. By the time Hammond squirted a catch to extra cover off the bowling of Luke Hollman, the partnership was worth 60, the Cheltenham-born left-hander having contributed 34 of those from 38 balls with four fours, and the rate remained at just over a run a ball.Within four runs of a maiden T20 50, Price attempted to reach that landmark and win the game with a single blow in the 18th over, only to over-balance and fall to a sharp stumping by Davies. Left to finish things off, Zafar remained unbeaten on 37 from 22 balls, with a six and three fours, while skipper Jack Taylor hit the winning run.Gloucestershire performed at the top of their game to reduce Surrey to 29 for 4 in the powerplay at Bristol 48 hours earlier, but were unable to emulate that feat on this occasion. They began well enough, Payne having Stephen Eskinazi caught at the wicket in the act of driving recklessly and Joe Cracknell hoisting Danny Lamb to square leg as Middlesex lurched to 20-2 in the third over. But the home side then blotted their copybook when Holden, still to get off the mark, was put down at point by Matt Taylor off the bowling of Zafar with the score on 26. He and Pieter Malan advanced the score to a respectable 45 for 2 at the end of the powerplay as the visitors sought to make the most of their good fortune. But Gloucestershire continued to press hard and Price had Malan caught at long-on for a 19-ball 21 and Zafar bowled former team-mate Ryan Higgins for one as Middlesex, struggling to contend with spin from both ends, were reduced to 52-4 in the eighth over.Fortunate to still be at large and determined to make good his escape, Holden led a Middlesex fightback of sorts, partially rebuilding the innings with a restorative fifth-wicket stand of 24 with de Caires. Gloucestershire were already regretting dropping the left-hander when he hoisted Matt Taylor for the first six of the match, and he went on to add a quartet of fours in a progressive innings that yielded 34 from 22 balls.Veteran slow left armer Tom Smith eventually put paid to Holden’s antics, luring him into a trap that saw him hit straight to Price at deep mid-wicket as Middlesex slipped to 76 for 5 in the eleventh.A good deal of responsibility resting on their shoulders, de Caires and Davies ran hard between the wickets and scored at slightly better than a run-a-ball in adding 29 for the sixth wicket. But Gloucestershire stuck to their task and de Caires, having made 18 from 20 balls, hoisted Price to substitute fielder Zaman Akhter at long-on and perished going for the big hit with the score on 105, while Luke Hollman was run out for one by Smith’s throw from deep backward square as Middlesex slumped to 114 for 7 in the sixteenth.Worse followed for the visitors, Tom Helm falling cheaply to the returning Payne, who applied concerted pressure at the death, keeping things tight to further frustrate Middlesex. In danger of running out of partners and forced to take matters into his own hands, Davies batted with real purpose to finish just four runs short of a half century, his 33-ball innings containing 3 fours and a six. Blake Cullen stayed with him long enough to stage a ninth-wicket alliance of 22 in 20 balls, but there was no escaping the strong suspicion that the Londoners had fallen short.

Son replacement: Tottenham now increasingly likely to move for £42m winger

Tottenham Hotspur have started identifying potential replacements for Son Heung-min, and the idea of moving for an “unbelievable” forward is now gaining traction among the club’s hierarchy, according to a report.

Question marks over Son's future at Tottenham

Tottenham chose to renew Son’s contract until the summer of 2026 back in January, exercising an option for a one-year extension, but there are still question marks over the South Korean’s long-term future in north London.

Spurs have started to identify potential replacements for the winger, who is set to turn 33 in the summer, amid a slight drop-off in performance levels this season, having only scored seven goals in the Premier League.

Mathys Tel, who can be bought permanently for £45m this summer, is seen as an option, however, the Bayern Munich loanee has hardly set the world alight since arriving in the January transfer window, having failed to score a Premier League goal.

As such, according to a report from Spain, Tottenham have now chosen a different player as Son’s successor, with AFC Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo believed to be of interest, having impressed in the Premier League this season.

It is becoming increasingly likely Spurs will choose Semenyo as the heir to Son, who could decide to move on in the near future, with the Bournemouth star’s name often finding itself on the list of potential targets.

AFC Bournemouth's AntoineSemenyolooks on

The idea of signing the Ghanaian is now gaining traction among the hierarchy, with his versatility making him an ideal option for Ange Postecoglou, and there is a feeling he could be available for an affordable fee, when compared to other forwards on the market.

Reports from elsewhere have revealed Bournemouth could hold out for a fee of around £34m – £42m this summer, amid interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.

"Unbelievable" Semenyo could be a fantastic signing

First and foremost, Tottenham need to make sure they secure Son’s long-term future, considering the 32-year-old has still been their best-performing player in the Premier League this season, having managed to pick up 10 assists.

That said, it is clear that Spurs could do with some additional depth, given that injuries have left Postecoglou with limited options at times this season, and Semenyo could still be a fantastic addition to the squad.

In light of his impressive performances for Bournemouth this season, the 25-year-old has been lauded as “unbelievable” by members of the media, picking up seven goals and five assists in the Premier League.

It could be savvy business to sign a forward who is proven in the Premier League for as little as £34m, but extending Son’s contract should be viewed as a priority, given that his performances this season indicate he still has a lot left to give.

Thilak Naidu appointed India's junior selection committee chairperson

Thilak Naidu, the former Karnataka wicketkeeper and Ranji Trophy winner, has been named the chairperson of BCCI’s junior selection committee (men). He fills the position left vacant by S Sharath, who was elevated to the senior men’s selection panel in January this year. The rest of the panel, comprising Ranadeb Bose (East Zone), Harvinder Singh Sodhi (North), Pathik Patel (West) and Krishen Mohan (Central) remains the same. The first task for Naidu’s panel will be to identify a pool of players and prepare them in the run-up to the Under-19 World Cup to be held in Sri Lanka early next year.ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sulakhana Naik, Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, formerly a national selector himself, lent weightage to Naidu’s candidature owing to his experience and body of work since his retirement in 2012.Naidu’s first-class career saw 93 matches in which he took 220 catches and effected 18 stumpings. He was also an aggressive lower-order batter, making 4386 run at 34.80, including eight centuries. Naidu chaired Karnataka’s junior selection panel from 2013-16 and was also part of the senior selection committee in 2015-16.The CAC also named Shyama Shaw as part of the women’s senior selection committee. The former allrounder represented India in three Tests and five ODIs in the mid-1990s and has since served in various administrative capacities, most notably as a Bengal selector for two terms. She replaces Mithu Mukherjee in the panel.Shaw joins the panel chaired by former India left-arm spinner Neetu David. Also in the committee are Arati Vaidya, Kalpana Venkatachar and Renu Margarate. Their immediate task will be to pick the India ODI and T20I squads for the limited-overs tour of Bangladesh in July, the team’s first international assignment since the T20 World Cup in South Africa in February. The announcement of the selection panel is likely to be followed by the appointment of a full-time head coach, for which the BCCI had invited applications in May.ESPNcricinfo has learnt the board was keen on appointing Gary Kirsten for the top job. However, Kirsten* confirmed he hadn’t been approached. Among those in contention are Amol Muzumdar, the former Mumbai captain, and Hrishikesh Kanitkar, the former India allrounder and current interim head coach. The search for a “big international name” is believed to be one of the reasons for the delay in appointment. It’s understood Charlotte Edwards hadn’t thrown her hat into the ring until recently; it couldn’t be confirmed if that stand has changed. The World Cup-winning former England captain is currently head coach of Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League. The new coach is likely to be given a two-year term to begin with, especially because there are two ICC events – the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2024 and the 50-over World Cup in India in 2025 – within this period.0900GMT The story has been updated with Gary Kirsten’s response.

India batter Prithvi Shaw is set for his maiden stint in the English county circuit after formalising a deal with Northamptonshire for the upcoming One-Day Cup, which is set to run from August 1 to September 16.Shaw arrived in the UK on Sunday and will feature in his first game this Friday, against Gloucestershire, in Cheltenham. Shaw was earlier in line to play two four-day County Championship fixtures as well, but was forced to miss them due to a delay in securing a visa.”It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m really thankfully to Northamptonshire for giving me this chance to express myself here,” Shaw was quoted as saying in a media release. “It’s going to be amazing I think and I’m really looking forward to it.”Related

Shaw has a formidable record in List A cricket. He averages 52.54 across 53 innings that have brought him 2627 runs. These include eight hundreds and 11 half-centuries, with a highest of 227 not out in February 2021.Shaw is currently out of favour as far as national selection goes, having been ignored for the West Indies T20Is as well as India’s Asian Games squad. He last played for India on the tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021, and was most-recently part of the squad earlier this year for the T20Is at home against New Zealand. That was followed by a disappointing IPL 2023, during which he was dropped midway through the competition. He was most recently in action in India’s season-opening first-class competition, the Duleep Trophy, where he made one half-century in four innings. Shaw was subsequently permitted to miss the Deodhar Trophy, the zonal 50-over competition, to allow him to play in England.”The goal for me wherever I play is about the team,” Shaw said. “So winning games for Northamptonshire is the first goal for this season and then it’s about scoring as many runs as I can, I just want to give 100%.”John Sadler, Northamptonshire’s head coach, hopes a hungry Shaw, who is “coming over with a point to prove”, will lend “high class” to the team.”He’s coming over with a point to prove and to enhance his own game. He’s had some pressure on his shoulders for some time living up to the expectation of his career so far, he’s probably fallen off the radar a little but he’s very, very hungry to come and get himself back to his very best and get back into the India team.”Shaw is the fifth Indian to feature in the county circuit in England this year after Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Ajinkya Rahane (Leicestershire), Arshdeep Singh (Kent) and Navdeep Saini (Worcestershire). There was a possibility of a sixth signing, with India allrounder Vijay Shankar potentially lining up a gig with Kent as a replacement for Arshdeep, who will join the Indian team in the Caribbean for the T20I series. However, the deal is believed to have fallen through due to visa issues. Shankar is currently playing league cricket in Chennai.
